We present excited states density functional theory (DFT) to calculate band gap for semiconductors and insulators. For the excited states exchange-correlation functional, we use a simple local density approximation (LDA) like functional and it gives the result which is very closed to experimental results. The linear muffin-tin potential is used to solve the self consistent Kohn-Sham equation
An exchange energy functional is proposed and tested for obtaining a class of excited-state energies using density functional formalism. The functional is the excited-state counterpart of the local-density approximation functional for the ground state. It takes care of the state dependence of the energy functional and leads to highly accurate excitation energies.
The performance of several common approximations for the exchange-correlation kernel within time-dependent density-functional theory is tested for elementary excitations in the homogeneous electron gas. Although the adiabatic local-density approximation gives a reasonably good account of the plasmon dispersion, systematic errors are pointed out and traced to the neglect of the wavevector dependence. Kernels optimized for atoms are found to perform poorly in extended systems due to an incorrect behavior in the long-wavelength limit, leading to quantitative deviations that significantly exceed t…
Based on the work of Gorling and that of Levy and Nagy, density-functional formalism for many Fermionic excited-states is explored through a careful and rigorous analysis of the excited-state density to external potential mapping. It is shown that the knowledge of the ground-state density is a must to fix the mapping from an excited-state density to the external potential. This is the excited-state counterpart of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, where instead of the ground-state density the density of the excited-state gives the true many-body wavefunctions of the system. Further, the excited-state…
We present a novel joint time-dependent density-functional theory for the description of solute-solvent systems in time-dependent external potentials. Starting with the exact quantum-mechanical action functional for both electrons and nuclei, we systematically eliminate solvent degrees of freedom and thus arrive at coarse-grained action functionals which retain the highly accurate \emph{ab initio} description for the solute and are, in principle, exact. This procedure allows us to examine approximations underlying popular embedding theories for excited states. Finally, we introduce a novel app…
In light of the recent work by Sahni et al., Harbola, and Gaudoin and Burke, the question of mapping from an excited-state density of a many-electron interacting system to the potential of the related non-interacting system is analyzed. To do so, we investigate the Levy-Nagy criterion quantitatively for several excited-states. Our work indicates that Levy-Nagy criterion may fix the density to potential map uniquely.
It is shown that the DFT exchange and correlation functionals satisfy an expression that couples exchange and correlation functionals and functional derivatives evaluated at three different densities and for two particle numbers. This equation can be used as a stringent test to check the internal self-consistency of approximations to the exchange and correlation functionals.
Excited configurations of hydrogen in the oxyhydride BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ ($x=0.1-0.5$), which are considered to be involved in its hydrogen transport and exchange processes, were investigated by positive muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectroscopy using muonium (Mu) as a pseudoisotope of hydrogen. Muons implanted into the BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ perovskite lattice were mainly found in two qualitatively different metastable states. One was assigned to a highly mobile interstitial protonic state, which is commonly observed in perovskite oxides. The other was found to form an entangled two spin-$\frac{…
It is shown that the integral of the product of the charge density difference of the N- and (N-1)-electron densities of the same Hamiltonian and the second functional derivative of the Hartree plus exchange-correlation functional of the N-electron density is equal to a constant.
A new functional form for the exchange enhancement in the generalized gradient approximation within density functional theory is given. The functional form satisfies the constraints used to construct the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional but can be systematically varied using one parameter. This gives the possibility to estimate the reliability of a computational result or to fit the parameter for a certain problem. Compared to other semi-empirical functionals, the present has the advantage that only one physically transparent parameter is used and that the fitted functional will obey th…
The construction of meta generalized gradient approximations based on the density matrix expansion (DME) is considered as one of the most accurate technique to design semilocal exchange energy functionals in two-dimensional density functional formalism. The exchange holes modeled using DME possess unique features that make it a superior entity. Parameterized semilocal exchange energy functionals based on the DME are proposed. The use of different forms of the momentum and flexible parameters is to subsume the non-uniform effects of the density in the newly constructed semilocal functionals. In…
Semi-local density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy of electrons are extensively used as it produce realistic and accurate results for finite and extended systems. The choice of techniques play crucial role in constructing such functionals of improved accuracy and efficiency. An accurate and efficient semi-local exchange energy functional in two dimensions is constructed by making use of the corresponding hole based on the density matrix expansion. The exchange hole involved is localized under the generalized coordinate transformation and satisfies all the relevant constraints. …
A review of the approximations in any time-dependent density functional calculation of excitation energies is given. The single-pole approximation for the susceptibility is used to understand errors in popular approximations for the exchange-correlation kernel. A new hybrid of exact exchange and adiabatic local density approximation is proposed and tested on the He and Be atoms.
Despite the great success of density functional theory in describing materials, there are still a few examples where current exchange-correlation functionals fail. We add another example to this list that drives further development of functionals. We show that the interaction of O$_2$ with Ag(110) cannot be properly described by some of the most popular GGA, meta GGA, and hybrid functionals. We identify problems and provide clues for a functional that should be able to describe this and similar systems properly.
It is shown that the Hartree-plus-exchange-correlation density functional potential for an integer N-electron system differs by a constant form the corresponding potential for an (N-1)-electron system if the densities are determined from the same external potential.
Range separated hybrid density functionals are very successful in describing a wide range of molecular and solid state properties accurately. Range separated hybrid functionals are designed from spherically averaged or system averaged reversed engineered exchange hole. In the present attempt, we employ screened range separated hybrid functional scheme to the meta-GGA rung by using Tao-Mo semilocal exchange hole (or functional). The hybrid functional proposed here utilizes the spherically averaged density matrix expansion based exchange hole in range separation scheme. For slowly varying densit…
Most experimental data on the single-molecule magnet Mn$_{12}$ acetate have been successfully explained by the assumption that the Mn$_{12}$ acetate has an effective ground-state spin of S=10. However, the effect of the low-lying excited manifolds caused by interactions between Mn spins has not been well understood. To investigate the features of the low-lying excited manifolds, the intramolecular exchange interactions are calculated using density-functional theory (DFT). With the calculated exchange parameters, the energy gap between the S=10 ground-state and the first excited-state manifold …
The relative merits of current-spin-density- and spin-density-functional theory are investigated for solids treated within the exact-exchange-only approximation. Spin-orbit splittings and orbital magnetic moments are determined at zero external magnetic field. We find that for magnetic (Fe, Co and Ni) and non-magnetic (Si and Ge) solids, the exact-exchange current-spin-density functional approach does not significantly improve the accuracy of the corresponding spin-density functional results.
We implement a Becke fuzzy cells type space partitioning scheme for the purposes of exchange-correlation within the GPAW projector augmented-wave method based density functional theory code. Space partitioning is needed in the situation where one needs to treat different parts of a combined system with different exchange-correlation functionals. For example, bulk and surface regions of a system could be treated with functionals that are specifically designed to capture the distinct physics of those regions. Here we use the space partitioning scheme to implement the quasi-nonuniform exchange-co…
A functional $E_{xc}[ρ(\r,ε)]$ is presented, in which the exchange and correlation energy of an electron gas depends on the local density of occupied states. A simple local parametrization scheme is proposed, entirely from first principles, based on the decomposition of the exchange-correlation hole in scattering states of different relative energies. In its practical Kohn-Sham-like form, the single-electron orbitals become the independent variables, and an explicit formula for the functional derivative is obtained.
Specific matrix elements of exchange and correlation kernels in time-dependent density-functional theory are computed. The knowledge of these matrix elements not only constraints approximate time-dependent functionals, but also allows to link different practical approaches to excited states, either based on density-functional theory, or on many-body perturbation theory, despite the approximations that have been performed to derive them.
The description of interacting many-electron systems in external magnetic fields is considered in the framework of the optimized effective potential method extended to current-spin-density functional theory. As a case study, a two-dimensional quantum dot in external magnetic fields is investigated. Excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results is obtained when self-interaction corrected correlation energies from the standard local spin-density approximation are added to exact-exchange results. Full self-consistency within the complete current-spin-density-functional framework is found t…
In recent work, generalized gradient approximations (GGA's) have been constructed from the energy density of the Airy gas for exchange but not for correlation. We report the random phase approximation (RPA) conventional correlation energy density of the Airy gas, the simplest edge electron gas, in which the auxiliary noninteracting electrons experience a linear potential. By fitting the Airy-gas RPA exchange-correlation energy density and making an accurate short-range correction to RPA, we propose a simple beyond-RPA GGA density functional ("ARPA+") for the exchange-correlation energy. Our fu…
Many recent applications of time-dependent density functional theory begin in an initially excited state, and propagate it using an adiabatic approximation for the exchange-correlation potential. This however inserts the excited-state density into a ground-state approximation. By studying a series of model calculations, we highlight the relevance of initial-state dependence of the exact functional when starting in an excited state, and explore the errors inherent in the adiabatic approximation that neglect this dependence.
A spin-current density-functional theory (SCDFT) is introduced, which takes into account currents of the spin-density and thus currents of the magnetization in addition to the electron density, the non-collinear spin-density, and the density current, which are considered in standard current spin-density-functional theory. An exact exchange Kohn-Sham formalism based on SCDFT is presented, which represents a general framework for the treatment of magnetic and spin properties. As illustration an oxygen atom in a magnetic field is treated with the new approach.
Semilocal exchange-correlation functionals are the most accurate, realistic and widely used ones to describe the complex many-electron effects of two-dimensional quantum systems. Beyond local density approximation, the generalized gradient approximations(GGAs) are designed using reduced density gradient as main ingredient. An enhancement factor is constructed using the inhomogeneity parameter of GGAs by taking care of the low and high density behaviors of it. Thus, the exchange energy functional proposed by making use of the aforementioned enhancement factor, significantly reduces the error co…
Density-functional theory simplifies many-electron calculations by approximating the exchange and correlation interactions with a one-electron operator that is a functional of the density. Hybrid functionals incorporate some amount of exact exchange, improving agreement with measured electronic and structural properties. However, calculations with hybrid functionals require substantial computational resources, limiting their use. By calculating the exchange interaction of periodic systems with single-precision arithmetic, the computation time is cut nearly in half with a negligible loss in acc…
The role of the exchange-correlation potential and the exchange-correlation kernel in the calculation of excitation energues from time-dependent density functional theory is studied. Excitation energies of the He and Be atoms are calculated, both from the exact ground-state Kohn-Sham potential, and from two orbital-dependent approximations. These are exact exchange and self-interaction corrected local density approximation (SIC-LDA), both calculated using the Krieger-Li-Iafrate (KLI) approximation. For the exchange-correlation kernela, three adiabatic approximations were tested: The local dens…
The magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound FeAl are investigated using exact exchange density functional theory. This is implemented within a state of the art all-electron full potential method. We find that FeAl is magnetic with a moment of 0.70 $μ_B$, close to the LSDA result of 0.69 $μ_B$. A comparison with the non-magnetic density of states with experimental negative binding energy result shows a much better agreement than any previous calculations. We attribute this to the fine details of the exchange field, in particular its asymmetry, which is captured very well with the orbi…
Intra-atomic exchange couplings (IEC) between $5d6s$ and $4f$ electrons are ubiquitous in rare-earth metals and play a critical role in spin dynamics. However, detecting them in real time domain has been difficult. Here we show the direct evidence of IEC between $5d6s$ and $4f$ electrons in gadolinium. Upon femtosecond laser excitation, $5d6s$ electrons are directly excited, their majority bands shift toward the Fermi level while their minority bands do the opposite. For the first time, our first-principles minority shift now agrees with the experiment quantitatively. Excited $5d6s$ electrons …
This work presents the formalism and implementation of excited state nuclear forces within density functional linear response theory (TDDFT) using a plane wave basis set. An implicit differentiation technique is developed for computing nonadiabatic coupling between Kohn-Sham molecular orbital wavefunctions as well as gradients of orbital energies which are then used to calculate excited state nuclear forces. The algorithm has been implemented in a plane wave/pseudopotential code taking into account only a reduced active subspace of molecular orbitals. It is demonstrated for the H$_2$ and N$_2$…
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is presently enjoying enormous popularity in quantum chemistry, as a useful tool for extracting electronic excited state energies. This article explains what TDDFT is, and how it differs from ground-state DFT. We show the basic formalism, and illustrate with simple examples. We discuss its implementation and possible sources of error. We discuss many of the major successes and challenges of the theory, including weak fields, strong fields, continuum states, double excitations, charge transfer, high harmonic generation, multiphoton ionization, el…
The generalized constrained search formalism is used to address the issues concerning density-to-potential mapping for excited states in time-independent density-functional theory. The multiplicity of potentials for any given density and the uniqueness in density-to-potential mapping are explained within the framework of unified constrained search formalism for excited-states due to Görling, Levy-Nagy, Samal-Harbola and Ayers-Levy. The extensions of Samal-Harbola criteria and it's link to the generalized constrained search formalism are revealed in the context of existence and unique construct…
Exchange hole is the principle constituent in density functional theory, which can be used to accurately design exchange energy functional and range separated hybrid functionals coupled with some appropriate correlation. Recently, density matrix expansion (DME) based semi-local exchange hole proposed by Tao-Mo gained attention due to its fulfillment of some exact constraints. We propose a new long-range corrected (LC) scheme that combines meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) exchange functionals designed from DME exchange hole coupled with the ab-initio Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange…
Two of the most popular quantum mechanical models of interacting fermions are compared to each other and to potentially exact solutions for a pair of contact-interacting fermions trapped in a 1D double-well potential, a model of atoms in a quasi-1D optical lattice or electrons of a Hydrogen molecule in a strong magnetic field. An exact few-body Hamiltonian is solved numerically in momentum space yielding a highly-correlated eigenspectrum. Additionally, approximate ground-state energies are obtained using both density functional theory (DFT) functional and 2-site Hubbard models. A 1D adiabatic …
The central quantity of density functional theory is the so-called exchange-correlation functional. This quantity encompasses all non-trivial many-body effects of the ground-state and has to be approximated in any practical application of the theory. For the past 50 years, hundreds of such approximations have appeared, with many successfully persisting in the electronic structure community and literature. Here, we present a library that contains routines to evaluate many of these functionals (around 180) and their derivatives.
We investigate how the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo energy of solids depends on single-particle orbitals used in Slater--Jastrow wave functions. We demonstrate that the dependence can be significant, in particular in the case of 3d transition-metal compounds, which we adopt as examples. We illustrate how exchange-correlation functionals with variable exact-exchange component can be exploited to reduce the fixed-node errors. On the basis of these results we argue that the fixed-node quantum Monte Carlo provides a variational approach for optimization of effective hamiltonians with parameter…
Exchange-correlation hole is a central concept in density functional theory. It not only provides justification for an exchange-correlation energy functional, but also serves as a local ingredient in nonlocal range-separation density functional. However, due to the nonlocal nature, modelig the conventional exact exchange hole presents a great challenge to density functional theory. In this work, we propose a semilocal exchange hole underlying the Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-GGA functional. The present model is distinct from previous models at small separation between an electron…
The B88 exchange energy density functional (created by Becke in 1988) is a crucial part of the most popular density functional in use today, B3LYP. B88 contains one empirical parameter which was fitted to Hartree-Fock exchange energies for the noble gas atoms. We show how local approximations to exchange become relatively exact under a very specific approach to the limit of large numbers, but that the usual gradient expansion does not. The leading corrections can be captured by generalized gradient approximations, producing a non-empirical derivation of the parameter in B88.
Accurate and efficient simulation of excited state properties is an important and much aspired cornerstone in the study of adsorbate dynamics on metal surfaces. To this end, the recently proposed linear expansion ΔSelf-Consistent Field (leΔSCF) method by Gavnholt et al. [Phys. Rev. B 78, 075441 (2008)] presents an efficient alternative to time consuming quasi-particle calculations. In this method the standard Kohn-Sham equations of Density-Functional Theory are solved with the constraint of a non-equilibrium occupation in a region of Hilbert-space resembling gas-phase orbitals of the adsorbate…
Reliable predictions of surface chemical reaction energetics require an accurate description of both chemisorption and physisorption. Here, we present an empirical approach to simultaneously optimize semi-local exchange and non-local correlation of a density functional approximation to improve these energetics. A combination of reference data for solid bulk, surface, and gas-phase chemistry and physical exchange-correlation model constraints leads to the VCML-rVV10 exchange-correlation functional. Owing to the variety of training data, the applicability of VCML-rVV10 extends beyond surface che…
Exchange interactions are a manifestation of the quantum mechanical nature of the electrons and play a key role in predicting the properties of materials from first principles. In density functional theory (DFT), a widely used approximation to the exchange energy combines fractions of density-based and Hartree-Fock (exact) exchange. This so-called hybrid DFT scheme is accurate in many materials, for reasons that are not fully understood. Here we show that a 1/4 fraction of exact exchange plus a 3/4 fraction of density-based exchange is compatible with a correct quantum mechanical treatment of …
In comparison with the accurate data on the on-top electron density n(0) in the proton-embedded electron gas with the density parameter r_s in the range 1-12 obtained by diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations, we have successfully constructed an alternative form of the exchange-correlation energy functional in the density functional theory by imposing the constraint due to the cusp theorem on the well-known Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. Although PBE does not, our functional, referred to as the cusp-corrected PBE (ccPBE), reproduces the DMC data on n(0) in the entire range of r_s.
An alternative type of approximation for the exchange and correlation functional in density functional theory is proposed. This approximation depends on a variable $u$ that is able to detect inhomogeneities in the electron density $ρ$ without using derivatives of $ρ$. Instead, $u$ depends on the orbital energies which can also be used to measure how a system differs from the homogeneous electron gas. Starting from the functional of Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3865 (1996)], a functional depending on $u$ is constructed. Tests on the lattice constant, bulk modulus, an…
A new class of orbital-dependent exchange-correlation (xc) potentials for applications in noncollinear spin-density-functional theory is developed. Starting from the optimized effective potential (OEP) formalism for the exact exchange potential - generalized to the noncollinear case - correlation effects are added via a self-consistent procedure inspired by the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander (STLS) method. The orbital-dependent xc potentials are applied to the Hubbard dimer in uniform and noncollinear magnetic fields and compared to exact diagonalization and to the Bethe-ansatz local spin-density …
Density functional theory (DFT) is one of the primary approaches to get a solution to the many-body Schrodinger equation. The essential part of the DFT theory is the exchange-correlation (XC) functional, which can not be obtained in analytical form. Accordingly, the accuracy improvement of the DFT is mainly based on the development of XC functional approximations. Commonly, they are built upon analytic solutions in low- and high-density limits and result from quantum Monte Carlo or post-Hartree-Fock numerical calculations. However, there is no universal functional form to incorporate these dat…
Is the plasmon description within the non-local correlation of the van der Waals density functional by Dion and coworkers (vdW-DF1) robust enough to describe all exchange-correlation components? To address this question, we design an exchange functional, termed LV-PW86r based on this plasmon description as well as recent analysis on exchange in the large $s$-regime. In the regime with reduced gradients $s=|\nabla n|/2n k_{\rm F}(n)$ smaller than $\approx 2.5$, dominating the non-local correlation part of the binding energy, the enhancement factor $F_x(s)$ closely resembles the Langreth-Vosko s…
The excited-state properties in a series of coumarin solar cell dyes are investigated with a long-range-corrected (LC) functional which asymptotically incorporates Hartree-Fock exchange. Using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we calculate excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and excited-state dipole moments in each of the dyes as a function of the range-separation paramenter, mu. To investigate the acceptable range of mu and assess the quality of the LC-TDDFT formalism, an extensive comparison is made between LC-BLYP excitation energies and approximate coupled cluster si…
Gross--Oliveira--Kohn (GOK) ensemble density-functional theory (GOK-DFT) is a time-\textit{independent} extension of density-functional theory (DFT) which allows to compute excited-state energies via the derivatives of the ensemble energy with respect to the ensemble weights. Contrary to the time-dependent version of DFT (TD-DFT), double excitations can be easily computed within GOK-DFT. However, to take full advantage of this formalism, one must have access to a \textit{weight-dependent} exchange-correlation functional in order to model the infamous ensemble derivative contribution to the exc…
