We prove new existence results for a Nonlinear Helmholtz equation with sign-changing nonlinearity of the form
$$ - Δu - k^{2}u = Q(x)|u|^{p-2}u, \quad u \in W^{2,p}(\mathbb{R}^{N}) $$ with $k>0,$ $N \geq 3$, $p \in \left[\left.\frac{2(N+1)}{N-1},\frac{2N}{N-2}\right)\right.$ and $Q \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$. Due to the sign-changes of $Q$, our solutions have infinite Morse-Index in the corresponding dual variational formulation.
In this paper, we study real solutions of the nonlinear Helmholtz equation $$ - Δu - k^2 u = f(x,u),\qquad x\in \R^N $$ satisfying the asymptotic conditions $$ u(x)=O(|x|^{\frac{1-N}{2}}) \quad \text{and} \quad \frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial r^2}(x)+k^2 u(x)) =o(|x|^{\frac{1-N}{2}}) \qquad \text{as $r=|x| \to \infty$.} $$ We develop the variational framework to prove the existence of nontrivial solutions for compactly supported nonlinearities without any symmetry assumptions. In addition, we consider the radial case in which, for a larger class of nonlinearities, infinitely many solutions are sh…
In this paper we study nonlinear Helmholtz equations with sign-changing diffusion coefficients on bounded domains. The existence of an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions is established making use of weak T-coercivity theory. All eigenvalues are proved to be bifurcation points and the bifurcating branches are investigated both theoretically and numerically. In a one-dimensional model example we obtain the existence of infinitely many bifurcating branches that are mutually disjoint, unbounded, and consist of solutions with a fixed nodal pattern.
A result of existence of a nonnegative and a nontrivial solution is proved via critical point theorems for non smooth functionals. The equation considered presents a convex part and a nonlinearity which changes sign.
This article consists of study of anisotropic double phase problems with singular term and sign changing subcritical as well as critical nonlinearity. Seeking the help of well known Nehari manifold technique, we establish existence of at least two opposite sign energy solutions in the subcritical case and one negative energy solution in the critical case. The results in the critical case is even new in the classical $p$-Laplacian case.
In this work, the following fractional Laplacian problem with pure critical nonlinearity is considered \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u=|u|^{\frac{4s}{N-2s}}u, &\mbox{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N, \\ u\in \mathcal{D}^{s,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $s\in (0,1)$, $N$ is a positive integer with $N\geq 3$, $(-Δ)^{s}$ is the fractional Laplacian operator. We will prove that this problem has infinitely many non-radial sign-changing solutions.
In this paper, we investigate the limiting absorption principle associated to and the well-posedness of the Helmholtz equations with sign changing coefficients which are used to model negative index materials. Using the reflecting technique introduced in \cite{Ng-Complementary}, we first derive Cauchy problems from these equations. The limiting absorption principle and the well-posedness are then obtained via various a priori estimates for these Cauchy problems. There approaches are proposed to obtain the a priori estimates. The first one follows from a priori estimates of elliptic systems equ…
We study a $p$-Laplacian equation involving a parameter $λ$ and a concave-convex nonlinearity containing a weight which can change sign. By using the Nehari manifold and the fibering method, we show the existence of two positive solutions on some interval $(0,λ^*+\varepsilon)$, where $λ^*$ can be characterized variationally. We also study the asymptotic behavior of solutions when $λ\downarrow 0$.
In this paper, we study the existence of three solutions for a Kirchhoff equation involving the nonlocal fractional p-Laplacian considering Sobolev and Hardy nonlinearities at subcritical and critical growths. The proof is based on Mountain Pass Theorem, Ekeland's variational principle and constrained minimization in Nehari sets.
In this paper we consider the following Schrödinger-Poisson system in the whole $\mathbb R^{3}$, \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δu+u+ λϕu=f(u) &\text{ in } \mathbb R^3, -Δϕ= u^2 &\text{ in } \mathbb R^3, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $λ>0$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is "asymptotically cubic" at infinity. This implies that the nonlocal term $ϕu$ and the nonlinear term $f(u)$ are, in some sense, in a strict competition. We show that the system admits a least energy sign-changing and radial solution obtained by minimizing the energy functional on the so-called {nodal Nehar…
In this paper we prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a general class of regular changing-sign nonlinearities $f$. The techniques used in the proof of the main result are based on a fine use of comparison and maximum principles and on an adaptation of the celebrated moving plane method to quasilinear elliptic equations in unbounded domains.
Starting from a bound state (positive or sign-changing) solution to $$ -Δω_m =|ω_m|^{p-1} ω_m -ω_m \ \ \mbox{in}\ \R^n, \ ω_m \in H^2 (\R^n)$$ and solutions to the Helmholtz equation $$ Δu_0 + λu_0=0 \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^n, \ λ>0, $$ we build new Dancer's type entire solutions to the nonlinear scalar equation $$ -Δu =|u|^{p-1} u-u \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^{m+n}. $$
In this paper, we consider the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{equation*} where $V$ and $g$ are continuous functions. Without the coercive condition on $V$ or the monotonicity condition on $g$, we show that the problem above has a least energy sign-changing solution and infinitely many sign-changing solutions. Our results especially solve the problem above in the case where $g(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ ($2<p<4$) and complete some recent related works on sign-changing solutions, in the sense that, in the literature only the case $g(u)…
In 2009 Loc and Schmitt established a result on sufficient conditions for multiplicity of solutions of a class of nonlinear eignvalue problems for the p-Laplace operator under Dirichlet boundary conditions, extending an earlier result of 1981 by Peter Hess for the Laplacian. Results on necessary conditions for existence were also established. In the present paper the authors extend the main results by Loc and Schmitt to the $Φ$-Laplacian. To overcome the difficulties with this much more general operator it was necessary to employ regularity results by Lieberman, a strong maximum principle by P…
By employing a novel perturbation approach and the method of invariant sets of descending flow, this manuscript investigates the existence and multiplicity of sign-changing solutions to a class of semilinear Kirchhoff equations in the following form $$ -\left(a+ b\int_{\R^3}|\nabla u|^2\right)\triangle {u}+V(x)u=f(u),\,\,x\in\R^3, $$ where $a,b>0$ are constants, $V\in C(\R^3,\R)$, $f\in C(\R,\R)$. The methodology proposed in the current paper is robust, in the sense that, the monotonicity condition for the nonlinearity $f$ and the coercivity condition of $V$ are not required. Our result improv…

In this paper, we are concerned with the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $N\geq3$, $V$ is radially symmetric and nonnegative, and $g$ is asymptotically 3-linear at infinity. In the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V>0$, we show the existence of a least energy sign-changing solution with exactly one node, and for any integer $k>0$, there are a pair of sign-changing solutions with $k$ nodes. Moreover, in the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V=0$, the problem above admits a least energy sign-changing solution with exac…
We look for a solutions to a nonlinear, fractional Schrödinger equation $$(-Δ)^{α/ 2}u + V(x)u = f(x,u)-Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u\hbox{ on }\mathbb{R}^N,$$ where potential $V$ is coercive or $V=V_{per} + V_{loc}$ is a sum of periodic in $x$ potential $V_{per}$ and localized potential $V_{loc}$, $Γ\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is periodic in $x$, $Γ(x)\geq 0$ for a.e. $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$ and $2<q<2^*_α$. If $f$ has the subcritical growth, but higher than $Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u$, then we find a ground state solution being a minimizer on the Nehari manifold. Moreover we show that if $f$ is odd in $u$ and $V$ is per…
Given $B_1(0)$ the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 3$), we study smooth positive singular solutions $u\in C^2(B_1(0)\setminus \{0\})$ to $-Δu=\frac{u^{2^\star(s)-1}}{|x|^s}-μu^q$. Here $0< s<2$, $2^\star(s):=2(n-s)/(n-2)$ is critical for Sobolev embeddings, $q>1$ and $μ> 0$. When $μ=0$ and $s=0$, the profile at the singularity $0$ was fully described by Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck. We prove that when $μ>0$ and $s>0$, besides this profile, two new profiles might occur. We provide a full description of all the singular profiles. Special attention is accorded to solutions such that $\liminf_{x\to…
In this article, we study the following fractional-Laplacian system with singular nonlinearity \begin{equation*} (P_{λ,μ}) \left\{ \begin{array}{lr} (-Δ)^s u = λf(x) u^{-q}+ \fracα{α+β}b(x) u^{α-1} w^β\; \text{in}\;Ω\\ (-Δ)^s w = μg(x) w^{-q}+ \fracβ{α+β} b(x) u^α w^{β-1}\; \text{in}\;Ω\\ \quad \quad u, w>0\;\text{in}\;Ω, \quad u = w = 0 \; \mbox{in}\; \mathbb{R}^n \setminusΩ, \end{array} \quad \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω$, $n>2s$, $s\in(0,1)$, $0<q<1$, $α>1$, $β>1$ satisfy $2<α+β< 2_{s}^*-1$ with $2_{s}^*=\frac{2n}{n…
We study the nonlinear Helmholtz equation $(Δ- λ^2)u = \pm |u|^{p-1}u$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $λ> 0$, $p \in \mathbb{N}$ odd, and more generally $(Δ_g + V - λ^2)u = N[u]$, where $Δ_g$ is the (positive) Laplace-Beltrami operator on an asymptotically Euclidean or conic manifold, $V$ is a short range potential, and $N[u]$ is a more general polynomial nonlinearity. Under the conditions $(p-1)(n-1) > 4$ and $k > (n-1)/2$, for every $f \in H^k(S^{n-1}_ω)$ of sufficiently small norm, we show there is a nonlinear Helmholtz eigenfunction taking the form \begin{equation*} u(r, ω) = r^{-(n-1)/2} \Big( e^{-iλ…
In this paper, we study the existence of solution to a nonlinear system: \begin{align} \left\{\begin{array}{cl} -Δu_{i} = f_{i}(u) & \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n, u_{i} > 0 & \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n, \, i = 1, 2,\cdots, L % u_{i}(x) \rightarrow 0 & \text{uniformly as } |x| \rightarrow \infty \end{array} \right. \end{align} for sign changing nonlinearities $f_i$'s. Recently, a degree theory approach to shooting method for this broad class of problems is introduced in \cite{LiarXiv13} for nonnegative $f_i$'s. However, many systems of nonlinear Schödinger type involve interaction with undetermined sig…
We establish the existence of an entire solution for a class of stationary Schrödinger systems with subcritical discontinuous nonlinearities and lower bounded potentials that blow-up at infinity. The proof is based on the critical point theory in the sense of Clarke and we apply Chang's version of the Mountain Pass Lemma for locally Lipschitz functionals. Our result generalizes in a nonsmooth framework a result of Rabinowitz \cite{rabi} related to entire solutions of the Schrödinger equation.
This paper is devoted to the study of the behavior of the unique solution $u_δ\in H^{1}_{0}(Ω)$, as $δ\to 0$, to the equation \begin{equation*} \dive(\epss_δA \nabla u_δ) + k^2 \epss_0 Σu_δ = \epss_0 f \mbox{in} Ω, \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth connected bounded open subset of $\mR^d$ with $d=2$ or 3, $f \in L^2(Ω)$, $k$ is a non-negative constant, $A$ is a uniformly elliptic matrix-valued function, $Σ$ is a real function bounded above and below by positive constants, and $\epss_δ$ is a complex function whose {\bf the real part takes the value 1 and -1}, and the imaginary part is posit…
We present a blow-up rate estimate for a solution to the parabolic Gross-Pitaevskii and related systems on entire space with Sobolev subcritical nonlinearity. We extend the results of [Y. Giga, S. Matsui and S. Sasayama, Indiana Univ. Math. J. {53} (2004), 483--514] to the parabolic systems.
In this paper, we consider the following nonlinear Kirchhoff type problem: \[ \left\{\begin{array}{lcl}-\left(a+b\displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|\nabla u|^2\right)Δu+V(x)u=f(u), & \textrm{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^3,\\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3), \end{array}\right. \] where $a,b>0$ are constants, the nonlinearity $f$ is superlinear at infinity with subcritical growth and $V$ is continuous and coercive. For the case when $f$ is odd in $u$ we obtain infinitely many sign-changing solutions for the above problem by using a combination of invariant sets method and the Ljusternik-Schnirelman type minimax metho…
We study the following Kirchhoff equation $$- \left(1 + b \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2 dx \right) Δu + V(x) u = f(x,u), \ x \in \mathbb{R}^3.$$ A special feature of this paper is that the nonlinearity $f$ and the potential $V$ are indefinite, hence sign-changing. Under some appropriate assumptions on $V$ and $f$, we prove the existence of two different solutions of the equation via the Ekeland variational principle and Mountain Pass Theorem.
We investigate the existence of multiple bound state solutions, in particular sign-changing solutions. By using the method of invariant sets of descending flow, we prove that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. In particular, the nonlinear term includes the power-type nonlinearity $f(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ for the well-studied case $p\in(4,6)$, and the less-studied case $p\in(3,4)$, and for the latter case few existence results are available in the literature.
In this article, we investigate the existence and multiplicity of solutions of Kirchhoff equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} -(1+b \int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|\nabla u|^2)Δu= k(x)\frac{|u|^2 u}{|x|} +λh(x)u,~~x\in\mathbb{R}^3\\ u(x)\rightarrow 0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~as ~~~~|x|\rightarrow\infty \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where the potential $k(x)$ allows sign changing. Making use of Nehari manifold method and Concentration-compactness principle, we obtain the existence and multiplicity of solutions for this equation.
We give an upper bound for the least energy of a sign-changing solution to the the nonlinear scalar field equation $$-Δu = f(u), \qquad u\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^{N}),$$ where $N\geq5$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is subcritical at infinity and supercritical near the origin. More precisely, we establish the existence of a nonradial sign-changing solution whose energy is smaller that $12c_0$ if $N=5,6$ and smaller than $10c_0$ if $N\geq 7$, where $c_0$ is the ground state energy.
We establish the existence of a nontrivial weak solution to strongly indefinite asymptotically linear and superlinear Schrödinger equations. The novelty is to identify the essential relation between the spectrum of the operator and the behavior of the nonlinear term, in order to weaken the necessary assumptions to obtain a linking structure to the problem, for instance to allow zero being in the spectrum or the nonlinearity being sign-changing. Our main difficulty is to overcome the lack of monotonicity on the nonlinear term, as well, as the lack of compactness since the domain is unbounded. W…
We use a variant of the fountain Theorem to prove the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for the following fractional p-Laplace equation (-Δ)^{s}_{p}u+V(x)|u|^{p-2}u=f(x,u) in R^N, where $s \in (0,1)$,$ p \geq 2$,$ N \geq 2$, $(-Δ)^{s}_{p}$ is the fractional $p$-Laplace operator, the nonlinearity f is $p$-superlinear at infinity and the potential V(x) is allowed to be sign-changing.
We look for ground state solutions to the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$-Δu + V(x)u = f(x,u)-Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u\hbox{ on }\mathbb{R}^N,$$ where $V=V_{per}+V_{loc}\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is the sum of a periodic potential $V_{per}$ and a localized potential $V_{loc}$, $Γ\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is periodic and $Γ(x)\geq 0$ for a.e. $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$ and $2\leq q<2^*$. We assume that $\infσ(-Δ+V)>0$, where $σ(-Δ+V)$ stands for the spectrum of $-Δ+V$ and $f$ has the subcritical growth but higher than $Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u$, however the nonlinearity $f(x,u)-Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u$ may chang…
We establish the uniqueness of the higher radial bound state solutions of $$ Δu +f(u)=0,\quad x\in \RR^n. \leqno(P) $$ We assume that the nonlinearity $f\in C(-\infty,\infty)$ is an odd function satisfying some convexity and growth conditions, and either has one zero at $b>0$, is non positive and not identically 0 in $(0,b)$, and is differentiable and positive $[b,\infty)$, or is positive and differentiable in $[0,\infty)$.
We are looking for solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger-type equations of the form $$ (-Δ)^{α/ 2} u (x) + V(x) u(x) = h (x,u(x)), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $V : \mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is an external potential (bounded, unbounded or singular) and the nonlinearity $h : \mathbb{R}^N \times \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ may be sign-changing. The aim of this paper is to give an introduction to the problem and the variational approach based on the Nehari manifold technique, and to survey recent results concerning the existence of ground and bound states.
We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem in a smooth bounded domain of the plane. The aim of the paper is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of sign changing solutions as the exponent p of the nonlinearity goes to infinity. Among other results we show, under some symmetry assumptions on the domain, that the positive and negative parts of a family of symmetric solutions concentrate at the same point, as p goes to infinity, and the limit profile looks like a tower of two bubbles given by a superposition of a regular and a singular solution of the Liouville problem in the plane.
In this paper we deal with the multiplicity of positive solutions to the fractional Laplacian equation \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u=λf(x)|u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{2^{*}_α-2}u, \quad\text{in}\,\,Ω, u=0,\text{on}\,\,\partialΩ, \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}(N\geq 2)$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary, $0<α<2$, $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ stands for the fractional Laplacian operator, $f\in C(Ω\times\mathbb{R},\mathbb{R})$ may be sign changing and $λ$ is a positive parameter. We will prove that there exists $λ_{*}>0$ such that the problem has at least two positive solutions for each $λ…
We consider the following Kirchhoff - Choquard equation \[ -M(\|\na u\|_{L^2}^{2})\De u = \la f(x)|u|^{q-2}u+ \left(\int_{\Om}\frac{|u(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}dy\right)|u|^{2^*_μ-2}u \; \text{in}\; \Om,\quad u = 0 \; \text{ on } \pa \Om , \] where $\Om$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N( N\geq 3)$ with $C^2$ boundary, $2^*_μ=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2}$, $1<q\leq 2$, and $f$ is a continuous real valued sign changing function. When $1<q< 2$, using the method of Nehari manifold and Concentration-compactness Lemma, we prove the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the above problem. We also p…
In this note we prove the Payne-type conjecture about the behaviour of the nodal set of least energy sign-changing solutions for the equation $-Δ_p u = f(u)$ in bounded Steiner symmetric domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ under the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. The nonlinearity $f$ is assumed to be either superlinear or resonant. In the latter case, least energy sign-changing solutions are second eigenfunctions of the zero Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian in $Ω$. We show that the nodal set of any least energy sign-changing solution intersects the boundary of $Ω$. The proof is based on a moving polar…
Motivated by the statistical mechanics description of stationary 2D-turbulence, for a sinh-Poisson type equation with asymmetric nonlinearity, we construct a concentrating solution sequence in the form of a tower of singular Liouville bubbles, each of which has a different degeneracy exponent. The asymmetry parameter $γ\in(0,1]$ corresponds to the ratio between the intensity of the negatively rotating vortices and the intensity of the positively rotating vortices. Our solutions correspond to a superposition of highly concentrated vortex configurations of alternating orientation; they extend in…
In the spirit of Berestycki and Lions, we prove the existence of saddle type nodal solutions for the Choquard equation \[ -Δu + u= \big(I_α\ast F(u)\big)F'(u)\qquad \text{ in }\;\mathbb{R}^N \] where $N\geq 2$ and $I_α$ is the Riesz potential of order $α\in (0,N)$. Without any compact setting, we construct saddle solutions in a unified way for the Choquard equation whose nodal domains are of cone shapes demonstrating Coxeter's symmetric configurations in $\mathbb R^N$. Moreover, if $F'$ is odd and has constant sign on $(0,+\infty)$, then the saddle solution maintains signed on the fundamental …
We consider radial solutions of a general elliptic equation involving a weighted $p$-Laplace operator with a subcritical nonlinearity. By a shooting method we prove the existence of solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane, a very general computation of an angular velocity and new estimates for the decay of an energy associated with an asymptotic Hamiltonian problem. Estimating the rate of decay for the energy requires a sub-criticality condition. The method covers the case of solutions which are not compactly supported or w…
