We study the nonlinear Helmholtz equation $(Δ- λ^2)u = \pm |u|^{p-1}u$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $λ> 0$, $p \in \mathbb{N}$ odd, and more generally $(Δ_g + V - λ^2)u = N[u]$, where $Δ_g$ is the (positive) Laplace-Beltrami operator on an asymptotically Euclidean or conic manifold, $V$ is a short range potential, and $N[u]$ is a more general polynomial nonlinearity. Under the conditions $(p-1)(n-1) > 4$ and $k > (n-1)/2$, for every $f \in H^k(S^{n-1}_ω)$ of sufficiently small norm, we show there is a nonlinear Helmholtz eigenfunction taking the form \begin{equation*} u(r, ω) = r^{-(n-1)/2} \Big( e^{-iλr} f(ω) + e^{+iλr} b(ω) + O(r^{-ε}) \Big), \qquad \text{as } r \to \infty, \end{equation*} for some $b \in H^k(S_ω^{n-1})$ and $ε> 0$. That is, the scattering matrix $f \mapsto b$ preserves Sobolev regularity, which is an improvement over the authors' previous work with Zhang, that proved a similar result with a loss of four derivatives.
We prove the existence and asymptotic expansion of a large class of solutions to nonlinear Helmholtz equations of the form \begin{equation*} (Δ- λ^2) u = N[u], \end{equation*} where $Δ= -\sum_j \partial^2_j$ is the Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with sign convention that it is positive as an operator, $λ$ is a positive real number, and $N[u]$ is a nonlinear operator that is a sum of monomials of degree $\geq p$ in $u$, $\overline{u}$ and their derivatives of order up to two, for some $p \geq 2$. Nonlinear Helmholtz eigenfunctions with $N[u]= \pm |u|^{p-1} u$ were first considered by Gutiérrez. Su…
In this article we prove that solutions of singular fully nonlinear partial differential equations are $C^{1,β}$. We also prove the simplicity of the principal eigenvalues for the Dirichlet Problem associated to these operators using that regularity, a strict comparison principle and Sard's theorem.
In this paper, we will prove a new, scale critical regularity criterion for solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation that are sufficiently close to being eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. This estimate improves previous regularity criteria requiring control on the $\dot{H}^α$ norm of $u,$ with $2\leq α<\frac{5}{2},$ to a regularity criterion requiring control on the $\dot{H}^α$ norm multiplied by the deficit in the interpolation inequality for the embedding of $\dot{H}^{α-2}\cap\dot{H}^α \hookrightarrow \dot{H}^{α-1}.$ This regularity criterion suggests, at least heuristically, the possibility …
In this paper we study nonlinear Helmholtz equations with sign-changing diffusion coefficients on bounded domains. The existence of an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions is established making use of weak T-coercivity theory. All eigenvalues are proved to be bifurcation points and the bifurcating branches are investigated both theoretically and numerically. In a one-dimensional model example we obtain the existence of infinitely many bifurcating branches that are mutually disjoint, unbounded, and consist of solutions with a fixed nodal pattern.
We study the optimal sets $Ω^\ast\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ for spectral functionals $F\big(λ_1(Ω),\dots,λ_p(Ω)\big)$, which are bi-Lipschitz with respect to each of the eigenvalues $λ_1(Ω),\dots,λ_p(Ω)$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian on $Ω$, a prototype being the problem $$ \min{\big\{λ_1(Ω)+\dots+ λ_p(Ω)\;:\;Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d,\ |Ω|=1\big\}}. $$ We prove the Lipschitz regularity of the eigenfunctions $u_1,\dots,u_p$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the optimal set $Ω^*$ and, as a corollary, we deduce that $Ω^*$ is open. For functionals depending only on a generic subset of the spectrum, as for example …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the barotropic Euler system coupled to Helmholtz or Poisson equations, in the whole space. We assume that the initial density is small enough, and that the initial velocity is close to some reference vector field u0 such that the spectrum of Du0 is bounded away from zero. We prove the existence of a global unique solution with (fractional) Sobolev regularity, and algebraic time decay estimates. Our work extends the papers by D. Serre and M. Grassin [20, 21, 43] dedicated to the compressible Euler system without coupling and integer regularity exponents.
Stability results for the Helmholtz equations in both deterministic and random periodic structures are proved in this paper. Under the assumption of excluding resonances, by a variational method and Fourier analysis in the energy space, the stability estimate for the Helmholtz equation in a deterministic periodic structure is established. For the stochastic case, by introducing a variable transform, the variational formulation of the scattering problem in a random domain is reduced to that in a definite domain with random medium. Combining the stability result for the deteministic case with re…
Duality analysis of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods under minimal regularity and application to the a priori and a posteriori error analysis of Helmholtz problems
We consider the time-harmonic scalar wave scattering problems with Dirichlet, Neumann, impedance and transmission boundary conditions. Under this setting, we analyze how sensitive diffracted fields and Cauchy data are to small perturbations of a given nominal shape. To this end, we follow [K. Eppler, Int.~J.~Appl. Math. Comput. Sci. 10(3) (2000), pp. 487-516], referred to as explicit shape calculus, and which places great emphasis on the characterization of the domain derivatives as boundary value problems. It consists in combining elliptic regularity theorems, shape calculus and functional an…
We show that the bounded solutions to the fractional Helmholtz equation, $(-Δ)^s u= u$ for $0<s<1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, are given by the bounded solutions to the classical Helmholtz equation $(-Δ)u= u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \ge 2$ when $u$ is additionally assumed to be vanishing at $\infty$. When $n=1$, we show that the bounded fractional Helmholtz solutions are again given by the classical solutions $A\cos{x} + B\sin{x}$. We show that this classification of fractional Helmholtz solutions extends for $1<s \le 2$ and $s\in \mathbb{N}$ when $u \in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Finally, we prove that…
In this paper, we study an inverse problem of determining the cross section of an infinitely long cylindrical-like material structure from the transverse electromagnetic scattering measurement. We establish a sharp logarithmic stability result in determining a polygonal scatterer by a single far-field measurement. The argument in establishing the stability result is localized around a corner and can be as well used to produce two highly intriguing implications for invisibility and transmission resonance in the wave scattering theory. In fact, we show that if a generic medium scatterer possesse…
We prove new, sharp, wavenumber-explicit bounds on the norms of the Helmholtz single- and double-layer boundary-integral operators as mappings from $L^2(\partial Ω)\rightarrow H^1(\partial Ω)$ (where $\partialΩ$ is the boundary of the obstacle). The new bounds are obtained using estimates on the restriction to the boundary of quasimodes of the Laplacian, building on recent work by the first author and collaborators. Our main motivation for considering these operators is that they appear in the standard second-kind boundary-integral formulations, posed in $L^2(\partial Ω)$, of the exterior Diri…
Consider the nonlinear and completely continuous scattering map \[ \mathcal{S}\big((Ω; λ, μ, V), \mathbf{u}^i\big)=\mathbf{u}_t^\infty(\hat{\mathbf{x}}), \quad \hat{\mathbf{x}}\in\mathbb{S}^{n-1}, \] which sends an inhomogeneous elastic scatterer $(Ω; λ, μ, V)$ to its far-field pattern $\mathbf{u}_t^\infty$ due to an incident wave field $\mathbf{u}^i$ via the Lamé system. Here, $(λ, μ, V)$ signifies the medium configuration of an elastic scatterer that is compactly supported in $Ω$. In this paper, we are concerned with the intrinsic geometric structure of the kernel space of $\mathcal{S}$, whi…
We prove that the electronic density of atomic and molecular eigenfunctions is smooth away from the nuclei. The result is proved without decay assumptions on the eigenfunctions.
In this paper, we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem associated with a general conductive transmission condition and study the geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions. We prove that under a mild regularity condition in terms of the Herglotz approximations of one of the pair of the transmission eigenfunctions, the eigenfunctions must be vanishing around a corner on the boundary. The Herglotz approximation can be regarded as the Fourier transform of the transmission eigenfunction in terms of the plane waves, and the growth rate of the transformed function can be used to…
The transmission eigenvalue problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions for a system without complementing conditions, i.e., the two equations of the system have the same coefficients for the second order terms, and thus being degenerate. These coefficients are allowed to be anisotropic and are assumed to be of class $C^2$. One of the keys of the analysis is to establish the well-posedness and the regula…
We present here a survey of recent results concerning the mathematical analysis of instabilities of the interface between two incompressible, non viscous, fluids of constant density and vorticity concentrated on the interface. This configuration includes the so-called Kelvin-Helmholtz (the two densities are equal), Rayleigh-Taylor (two different, nonzero, densities) and the water waves (one of the densities is zero) problems. After a brief review of results concerning strong and weak solutions of the Euler equation, we derive interface equations (such as the Birkhoff-Rott equation) that descri…
We consider the question of whether the high-energy eigenfunctions of certain Schrödinger operators on the $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant curvature $-κ^2$ are flexible enough to approximate an arbitrary solution of the Helmholtz equation $Δh+h=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, over the natural length scale $O(λ^{-1/2})$ determined by the eigenvalue $λ\gg 1$. This problem is motivated by the fact that, by the asymptotics of the local Weyl law, approximate Laplace eigenfunctions do have this approximation property on any compact Riemannian manifold. In this paper we are specifically interested…
We describe the long time behavior of small non-smooth solutions to the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations on the sphere S^2. More precisely, we prove that the low harmonic energies (also called super-actions) are almost preserved for times of order $ε$^--r , where r >> 1 is an arbitrarily large number and $ε$ << 1 is the norm of the initial datum in the energy space H^1 x L^2. Roughly speaking, it means that, in order to exchange energy, modes have to oscillate at the same frequency. The proof relies on new multilinear estimates on Hamiltonian vector fields to put the system in Birkhoff normal …
We prove smoothing estimates in Morrey-Campanato spaces for a Helmholtz equation $$ -Lu+zu=f, \qquad -Lu:=\nabla^{b}(a(x)\nabla^{b}u)-c(x)u, \qquad \nabla^{b}:=\nabla+ib(x) $$ with fully variable coefficients, of limited regularity, defined on the exterior of a starshaped compact obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\ge3$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The principal part of the operator is a long range perturbation of a constant coefficient operator, while the lower order terms have an almost critical decay. We give explicit conditions on the size of the perturbation which prevent trapping. A…
We study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions to the $n$-dimensional ($n=2,3$) Camassa-Holm equations with fractional Laplacian viscosity with smooth initial data. It is a coupled system between the Navier-Stokes equations with nonlocal viscosity and a Helmholtz equation. The main difficulty lies in establishing some a priori estimates for the fractional Laplacian viscosity. To achieve this, we need to explore suitable fractional-power Sobolev-type estimates, and bilinear estimates for fractional derivatives. Especially, for the critical case $\displaystyle s=\frac{n}{4}$ with…
We investigate regularity properties of molecular one-electron densities rho near the nuclei. In particular we derive a representation rho(x)=mu(x)*(e^F(x)) with an explicit function F, only depending on the nuclear charges and the positions of the nuclei, such that mu belongs to C^{1,1}(R^3), i.e., mu has locally essentially bounded second derivatives. An example constructed using Hydrogenic eigenfunctions shows that this regularity result is sharp. For atomic eigenfunctions which are either even or odd with respect to inversion in the origin, we prove that mu is even C^{2,α}(R^3) for all alp…
We study existence of principal eigenvalues of fully nonlinear integro-differential elliptic equations with a drift term via the Krein-Rutman theorem which based on regularity up to boundary of viscosity solutions. We also show the simplicity of the eigenfunctions in viscosity sense by a nonlocal version of ABP estimate.
This paper is dedicated to the spectral optimization problem $$ \mathrm{min}\left\{λ_1^s(Ω)+\cdots+λ_m^s(Ω) + Λ\mathcal{L}_n(Ω)\colon Ω\subset D \mbox{ s-quasi-open}\right\} $$ where $Λ>0, D\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded open set and $λ_i^s(Ω)$ is the $i$-th eigenvalues of the fractional Laplacian on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary condition on $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω$. We first prove that the first $m$ eigenfunctions on an optimal set are locally Hölder continuous in the class $C^{0,s}$ and, as a consequence, that the optimal sets are open sets. Then, via a blow-up analysis based on a Weiss …
Assigning boundary conditions, such as acoustic impedance, to the frequency domain thermoviscous wave equations (TWE), derived from the linearized Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE) poses a Helmholtz problem, solution to which yields a discrete set of complex eigenfunctions and eigenvalue pairs. The proposed method -- the inverse Helmholtz solver (iHS) -- reverses such procedure by returning the value of acoustic impedance at one or more unknown impedance boundaries (IBs) of a given domain, via spatial integration of the TWE for a given real-valued frequency with assigned conditions on other bound…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ be an open bounded domain and $m\in \mathbb{N}$. Given $k_1,\ldots,k_m\in \mathbb{N}$, we consider a wide class of optimal partition problems involving Dirichlet eigenvalues of elliptic operators, of the following form \[ \inf\left\{F(λ_{k_1}(ω_1),\ldots, λ_{k_m}(ω_m)):\ (ω_1,\ldots, ω_m)\in \mathcal{P}_m(Ω)\right\}, \] where $λ_{k_i}(ω_i)$ denotes the $k_i$--th eigenvalue of $(-Δ,H^1_0(ω_i))$ counting multiplicities, and $\mathcal{P}_m(Ω)$ is the set of all open partitions of $Ω$, namely \[ \mathcal{P}_m(Ω)=\left\{(ω_1,\ldots,ω_m):\ ω_i\subset Ω\text{ open},\ ω_i\c…
We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity results for mixed boundary value problems associated with fully nonlinear, possibly singular or degenerate elliptic equations. Our main result is a global Hölder estimate for solutions, obtained by means of the comparison principle and the construction of ad hoc barriers. The global Hölder estimate immediately yields a compactness result in the space of solutions, which could be applied in the study of principal eigenvalues and principal eigenfunctions of mixed boundary value problems.
The paper makes use of recent results in the theory of Banach lattices and positive operators to deal with abstract semilinear equations. The aim is to work with minimal or no regularity conditions on the boundary of the domains, where the usual arguments based on maximum principles do not apply. A key result is an application of Kato's inequality to prove a comparison theorem for eigenfunctions that only requires interior regularity and avoids the use of the Hopf boundary maximum principle. We demonstrate the theory on an abstract degenerate logistic equation by proving the existence, uniquen…
We study a class of nonlinear eigenvalue problems of Schrödinger type, where the potential is singular on a set of points. Such problems are widely present in physics and chemistry, and their analysis is of both theoretical and practical interest. In particular, we study the regularity of the eigenfunctions of the operators considered, and we propose and analyze the approximation of the solution via an isotropically refined $hp$ discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method. We show that, for weighted analytic potentials and for up-to-quartic polynomial nonlinearities, the eigenfunctions belong to analyt…
We prove a microlocal lower bound on the mass of high energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on compact surfaces of negative curvature, and more generally on surfaces with Anosov geodesic flows. This implies controllability for the Schrödinger equation by any nonempty open set, and shows that every semiclassical measure has full support. We also prove exponential energy decay for solutions to the damped wave equation on such surfaces, for any nontrivial damping coefficient. These results extend previous works [arXiv:1705.05019], [arXiv:1712.02692], which considered the setting of surfaces of c…

In this paper we study Lipschitz regularity of elliptic PDEs on geometric graphs, constructed from random data points. The data points are sampled from a distribution supported on a smooth manifold. The family of equations that we study arises in data analysis in the context of graph-based learning and contains, as important examples, the equations satisfied by graph Laplacian eigenvectors. In particular, we prove high probability interior and global Lipschitz estimates for solutions of graph Poisson equations. Our results can be used to show that graph Laplacian eigenvectors are, with high pr…
This paper treats the time-harmonic electro-magnetic scattering or radiation problem governed by Maxwell's equations in an exterior weak Lipschitz domain divided into two disjoint weak Lipschitz parts We will present a solution theory using the framework of polynomially weighted Sobolev spaces for the rotation and divergence. We will show a Fredholm alternative type result to hold using the principle of limiting absorption introduced by Eidus in the 1960's. The necessary a-priori-estimate and polynomial decay of eigenfunctions for the Maxwell equations will be obtained by transferring well kno…
