The time domain enclosure method is one of analytical methods for inverse obstacle problems governed by partial differential equations in the time domain. This paper considers the case when the governing equation is given by the Maxwell system and consists of two parts. The first part establishes the base of the time domain enclosure method for the Maxwell system using a single set of the solutions over a finite time interval for a general (isotropic) inhomogeneous medium in the whole space. It is a system of asymptotic inequalities for the indicator function which may enable us to apply the time domain enclosure method to the problem of finding unknown penetrable obstacles embedded in various background media. As a first step of its expected applications, the case when the background medium is homogeneous and isotropic, is considered and the time domain enclosure method is realized. This is the second part.
We develop reconstruction schemes to determine penetrable obstacles in a region of \mathbb{R}^{2} or \mathbb{R}^{3} and we consider anisotropic elliptic equations. This algorithm uses oscillating-decaying solutions to the equation. We apply the oscillating-decaying solutions and the Runge approximation property to the inverse problem of identifying an inclusion in an anisotropic elliptic differential equation.
This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by…
We deal with the problem of the linearized and isotropic elastic inverse scattering by interfaces. We prove that the scattered $P$-parts or $S$-parts of the far field pattern, corresponding to all the incident plane waves of pressure or shear types, uniquely determine the obstacles for both the penetrable and impenetrable obstacles. In addition, we state a reconstruction procedure. In the analysis, we assume only the Lipschitz regularity of the interfaces and, for the penetrable case, the Lam{é} coefficients to be measurable and bounded, inside the obstacles, with the usual jumps across these …
We study a question arising in inverse scattering theory: given a penetrable obstacle, does there exist an incident wave that does not scatter? We show that every penetrable obstacle with real-analytic boundary admits such an incident wave. At zero frequency, we use quadrature domains to show that there are also obstacles with inward cusps having this property. In the converse direction, under a nonvanishing condition for the incident wave, we show that there is a dichotomy for boundary points of any penetrable obstacle having this property: either the boundary is regular, or the complement of…
This work is concerned with an inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in two dimensions. We prove that in the TE polarization case, the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern incited by a single incoming wave is sufficient to uniquely determine the shape of a penetrable scatterer of rectangular type. As a by-product, the uniqueness is also confirmed to inverse transmission problems modelled by scalar Helmholtz equations with discontinuous normal derivatives at the scattering interface. Keywords: Uniqueness, inverse medium scattering, Maxwell equations, one incoming wave, shape identif…
Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle imbedded in an isotropic homogeneous medium. The obstacle is supposed to possess a circular conic point or an edge point on the boundary in three dimensions and a planar corner point in two dimensions. The opening angles of cones and edges are allowed to be any number in $(0,2π)\backslash\{π\}$. We prove that such an obstacle scatters any incoming wave non-trivially (i.e., the far field patterns cannot vanish identically), leading to the absence of real non-scattering wavenumbers. Local and global uniqueness resu…
In this work, we are concerned with the inverse scattering by interfaces for the linearized and isotropic elastic model at a fixed frequency. First, we derive complex geometrical optic solutions with linear or spherical phases having a computable dominant part and an $H^α$-decaying remainder term with $α<3$, where $H^α$ is the classical Sobolev space. Second, based on these properties, we estimate the convex hull as well as non convex parts of the interface using the farfields of only one of the two reflected body waves (pressure waves or shear waves) as measurements. The results are given for…
We consider the scalar Helmholtz equation with variable, discontinuous coefficients, modelling transmission of acoustic waves through an anisotropic penetrable obstacle. We first prove a well-posedness result and a frequency-explicit bound on the solution operator, with both valid for sufficiently-large frequency and for a class of coefficients that satisfy certain monotonicity conditions in one spatial direction, and are only assumed to be bounded (i.e., $L^\infty$) in the other spatial directions. This class of coefficients therefore includes coefficients modelling transmission by penetrable…
A mathematical method for through-wall imaging via wave phenomena in the time domain is introduced. The method makes use of a single reflected wave over a finite time interval and gives us a criterion whether a penetrable obstacle exists or not in a general rough background medium. Moreover, if the obstacle exists, the lower and upper estimates of the distance between the obstacle and the center point of the support of the initial data are given. As an evidence of the potential of the method two applications are also given.
An inverse obstacle problem for the wave equation in a two layered medium is considered. It is assumed that the unknown obstacle is penetrable and embedded in the lower half-space. The wave as a solution of the wave equation is generated by an initial data whose support is in the upper half-space and observed at the same place as the support over a finite time interval. From the observed wave an indicator function in the time domain enclosure method is constructed. It is shown that, one can find some information about the geometry of the obstacle together with the qualitative property in the a…
This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves from an impenetrable obstacle in a piecewise homogeneous medium. The well-posedness of the direct problem is established, employing the integral equation method and then used, in conjunction with the representation in a combination of layer potentials of the solution, to prove a priori estimates of solutions on some part of the interface between the layered media. The inverse problem is also considered in this paper. An uniqueness result is obtained for the first time in determining both the penetrable inter…
This article is concerned with the time-harmonic electromagnetic (EM) scattering from a generic inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that if there is a right corner on the support of the medium, then it scatters every pair of incident EM fields, excluding a possible class of EM fields which are of very particular forms. That is, for every pair of admissible incident EM fields, the corresponding scattered wave fields associated to the medium scatterer cannot be identically vanishing outside the support of the medium. Indeed, we achieve the corner scattering result by establishing a stronger result…
Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset \mathbb R^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be Hölder continuous near the corners. If $D\subset \mathbb R^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of th…
Over the last ten years, results from [Melenk-Sauter, 2010], [Melenk-Sauter, 2011], [Esterhazy-Melenk, 2012], and [Melenk-Parsania-Sauter, 2013] decomposing high-frequency Helmholtz solutions into "low"- and "high"-frequency components have had a large impact in the numerical analysis of the Helmholtz equation. These results have been proved for the constant-coefficient Helmholtz equation in either the exterior of a Dirichlet obstacle or an interior domain with an impedance boundary condition. Using the Helffer-Sjöstrand functional calculus, this paper proves analogous decompositions for scatt…
This paper is devoted to the algorithmic development of inverse elastic scattering problems. We focus on reconstructing the locations and shapes of elastic scatterers with known dictionary data for the nearly incompressible materials. The scatterers include non-penetrable rigid obstacles and penetrable mediums, and we use time-harmonic elastic point signals as the incident input waves. The scattered waves are collected in a relatively small backscattering aperture on a bounded surface. A two-stage algorithm is proposed for the reconstruction and only two incident waves of different wavenumbers…
We present a reconstruction algorithm for recovering both "magnetic-hard" and "magnetic-soft" obstacles in a background domain with known isotropic medium from the boundary impedance map. We use in our algorithm complex geometric optics solutions constructed for Maxwell's equation.
This paper is concerned with reconstruction issue of inverse obstacle problems governed by partial differential equations and consists of two parts. (i) The first part considers the foundation of the probe and enclosure methods for an impenetrable obstacle embedded in a medium governed by the stationary Schrödinger equation. Under a general framework, some natural estimates for a quantity computed from a pair of the Dirichlet and Neumann data on the outer surface of the body occupied by the medium are given. The estimates enables us to derive almost immediately the necessary asymptotic behavio…
This paper is devoted to the uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering problems for the Helmholtz equation with phaseless far-field data. Some novel techniques are developed to overcome the difficulty of translation invariance induced by a single incident plane wave. In this paper, based on adding a reference ball as an extra artificial impenetrable obstacle (resp. penetrable homogeneous medium) to the inverse obstacle (resp. medium) scattering system and then using superpositions of a fixed plane wave and some point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the location and shap…
It is proved that a general polyhedral perfect conducting obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$, possibly consisting of finitely many solid polyhedra, is uniquely determined by the far-field pattern corresponding to a single incident wave. This improves earlier results in the literature to the formally determined case.
An inverse obstacle problem for the wave governed by the wave equation in a two layered medium is considered under the framework of the time domain enclosure method. The wave is generated by an initial data supported on a closed ball in the upper half-space, and observed on the same ball over a finite time interval. The unknown obstacle is penetrable and embedded in the lower half-space. It is assumed that the propagation speed of the wave in the upper half-space is greater than that of the wave in the lower half-space, which is excluded in the previous study: Ikehata and Kawashita (2018) to a…
In this paper we consider the inverse acoustic scattering (in \mathbb{R}^3) or electromagnetic scattering (in \mathbb{R}^2, for the scalar TE-polarization case) problem of reconstructing possibly multiple defective penetrable regions in a known anisotropic material of compact support. We develop the factorization method for a non-absorbing anisotropic background media containing penetrable defects. In particular, under appropriate assumptions on the anisotropic material properties of the media we develop a rigorous characterization for the support of the defective regions from the given far fi…
This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves from an impenetrable obstacle in a piecewise homogeneous medium. The well-posedness of the direct problem is established, employing the integral equation method. Inspired by a novel idea developed by Hahner [11], we prove that the penetrable interface between layers can be uniquely determined from a knowledge of the electric far field pattern for incident plane waves. Then, using the idea developed by Liu and Zhang [21], a new mixed reciprocity relation is obtained and used to show that the impenetrab…
This paper is concerned with a conceptual gesture-based instruction/input technique using electromagnetic wave detection. The gestures are modelled as the shapes of some impenetrable or penetrable scatterers from a certain admissible class, called a dictionary. The gesture-computing device generates time-harmonic electromagnetic point signals for the gesture recognition and detection. It then collects the scattered wave in a relatively small backscattering aperture on a bounded surface containing the point sources. The recognition algorithm consists of two stages and requires only two incident…
We study the enclosure method for the p-Calderón problem, which is a nonlinear generalization of the inverse conductivity problem due to Calderón that involves the p-Laplace equation. The method allows one to reconstruct the convex hull of an inclusion in the nonlinear model by using exponentially growing solutions introduced by Wolff. We justify this method for the penetrable obstacle case, where the inclusion is modelled as a jump in the conductivity. The result is based on a monotonicity inequality and the properties of the Wolff solutions.
We consider the scattering problem on locally perturbed periodic penetrable dielectric layers, which is formulated in terms of the full vector-valued time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. The right-hand side is not assumed to be periodic. At first, we derive a variational formulation for the electromagnetic scattering problem in a suitable Sobolev space on an unbounded domain and reformulate the problem into a family of bounded domain problems using the Bloch-Floquet transform. For this family we can show the unique existence of the solution by applying a carefully designed Helmholtz decompositio…
This paper is concerned with analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering by an obstacle which is embedded in a two-layered lossy medium separated by an unbounded rough surface. Given a dipole point source, the direct problem is to determine the electromagnetic wave field for the given obstacle and unbounded rough surface; the inverse problem is to reconstruct simultaneously the obstacle and unbounded rough surface from the electromagnetic field measured on a plane surface above the obstacle. For the direct problem, a new boundary integral equation is proposed and its well-posedness is establis…
This paper is dedicated to design a direct sampling method of inverse electromagnetic scattering problems, which uses multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data for reconstructing the boundary of perfectly conducting obstacles. We show that a smallest strip containing the unknown object can be approximately determined by the multi-frequency backscattering far field data at two opposite observation directions. The proof is based on the Kirchhoff approximation and Fourier transform. Such a strip is then reconstructed by an indicator, which is the absolute value of an integral of the pr…
We deal with the problem of reconstructing interfaces using complex geometrical optics solutions for the Maxwell system. The contributions are twofold. First, we justify the enclosure method for the impenetrable obstacle case avoiding any assumption on the directions of the phases of the CGO's (or the curvature of obstacle's surface). In addition, we need only a Lipschitz regularity of this surface. The analysis is based on some fine properties of the corresponding layer potentials in appropriate Sobolev spaces. Second, we justify this method also for the penetrable case, where the interface i…
We consider the Helmholtz transmission problem with one penetrable star-shaped Lipschitz obstacle. Under a natural assumption about the ratio of the wavenumbers, we prove bounds on the solution in terms of the data, with these bounds explicit in all parameters. In particular, the (weighted) $H^1$ norm of the solution is bounded by the $L^2$ norm of the source term, independently of the wavenumber. These bounds then imply the existence of a resonance-free strip beneath the real axis. The main novelty is that the only comparable results currently in the literature are for smooth, convex obstacle…
In this paper, we are concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of recovering a complex scatterer by the corresponding electric far-field data. The complex scatterer consists of an inhomogeneous medium and a possibly embedded perfectly electric conducting (PEC) obstacle. The far-field data are collected corresponding to incident plane waves with a fixed incident direction and a fixed polarisation, but frequencies from an open interval. It is shown that the embedded obstacle can be uniquely recovered by the aforementioned far-field data, independent of the surrounding medium…
We consider the electromagnetic scattering from a convex polyhedral PEC or PMC obstacle due to a time-harmonic incident plane wave. It is shown that the modulus of the far-field pattern in the backscattering aperture possesses a certain local maximum behavior. Using the local maximum indicating phenomena, one can determine the exterior unit normal directions, as well as the face areas, of the front faces of the obstacle. Then we propose a recovery scheme of reconstructing the obstacle by phaseless backscattering measurements. This work significantly extends our recent study in [12] from two di…
In this paper, a time domain enclosure method for an inverse obstacle scattering problem of electromagnetic wave is introduced. The wave as a solution of Maxwell's equations is generated by an applied volumetric current having an {\it orientation} and supported outside an unknown obstacle and observed on the same support over a finite time interval. It is assumed that the obstacle is a perfect conductor. Two types of analytical formulae which employ a {\it single} observed wave and explicitly contain information about the geometry of the obstacle are given. In particular, an effect of the orie…
An inverse obstacle scattering problem for the electromagnetic wave governed by the Maxwell system over a finite time interval is considered. It is assumed that the wave satisfies the Leontovich boundary condition on the surface of an unknown obstacle. The condition is described by using an unknown positive function on the surface of the obstacle which is called the surface admittance. The wave is generated at the initial time by a volumetric current source supported on a very small ball placed outside the obstacle and only the electric component of the wave is observed on the same ball over a…
In this paper we consider the electromagnetic scattering problem by an obstacle characterised by a Generalized Impedance Boundary Condition in the harmonic regime. These boundary conditions are well known to provide accurate models for thin layers or imperfectly conducting bodies. We give two different formulations of the scattering problem and we provide some general assumptions on the boundary condition under which the scattering problem has at most one solution. We also prove that it is well-posed for three different boundary conditions which involve second order surface differential operat…
We study the strongly singular volume integral equation that describes the scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves by a penetrable obstacle. We consider the case of a cylindrical obstacle and fields invariant along the axis of the cylinder, which allows the reduction to two-dimensional problems. With this simplification, we can refine the analysis of the essential spectrum of the volume integral operator started in a previous paper (M. Costabel, E. Darrigrand, H. Sakly: The essential spectrum of the volume integral operator in electromagnetic scattering by a homogeneous body, Comptes…
In this paper, we consider the scattering of a time-dependent electromagnetic wave by an elastic body immersed in the lower half-space of a two-layered background medium which is separated by an unbounded rough surface. By proposing two exact transparent boundary conditions (TBCs) on the artificial planes, we reformulate the unbounded scattering problem into an equivalent initial-boundary value problem in a strip domain with the well-posedness and stability proved using the Laplace transform, variational method and energy method. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is then introduced to truncate t…
This paper is concerned with uniqueness in inverse electromagnetic scattering with phaseless far-field pattern at a fixed frequency. In our previous work [{\em SIAM J. Appl. Math.} {\bf 78} (2018), 3024-3039], by adding a known reference ball into the acoustic scattering system, it was proved that the impenetrable obstacle and the index of refraction of an inhomogeneous medium can be uniquely determined by the acoustic phaseless far-field patterns generated by infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves with different directions at a fixed frequency. In this paper, we extend thes…
In this paper, we solve a longstanding open problem for determining the shape of an obstacle from the knowledge of the electric (or magnetic) far field pattern for the scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic field. We show that the electric (or magnetic) far field patten ${\mathbf{E}}^\infty(\boldsymbolβ, {\boldsymbolα}_0, k_0)$ (or ${\mathbf{H}}^\infty (\boldsymbolβ, {\boldsymbolα}_0, k_0)$), known for all $\boldsymbolβ\in {\mathbb S}^2$, where ${\mathbb {S}}^2$ is the unit sphere in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, ${\boldsymbolα}_0\in {\mathbb{S}}^2$ is fixed, $k_0>0$ is fixed, determines the obstacle…

We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the Schrodinger operator with time-dependent electromagnetic potentials in domains with obstacles. We extend the resuls of the author's works [E1], [E2], [E3] to the case of time-dependent potentials. We relate our results to the Aharonov-Bohm effect caused by magnetic and electric fluxes.
