It is proved that a general polyhedral perfect conducting obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$, possibly consisting of finitely many solid polyhedra, is uniquely determined by the far-field pattern corresponding to a single incident wave. This improves earlier results in the literature to the formally determined case.
We consider an inverse acoustic scattering problem in simultaneously recovering an embedded obstacle and its surrounding inhomogeneous medium by formally determined far-field data. It is shown that the knowledge of the scattering amplitude with a fixed incident direction and all observation angles along with frequencies from an open interval can be used to uniquely identify the embedded obstacle, sound-soft or sound-hard disregarding the surrounding medium. Furthermore, if the surrounding inhomogeneous medium is from an admissible class (still general), then the medium can be recovered as well…
We answer a question left open in [Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 230 (1) (2018), 125-184] and [Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 230 (2) (2018), 783-784], by proving that the blow-up limit of minimizers $u$ of the lower dimensional obstacle problem is unique at generic point of the free-boundary.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for the obstacle problem for linear equations involving the fractional Laplacian with zero Dirichlet exterior condition. The problem under consideration arises as the limit of some logistic-type equations. Our result extends (and slightly strengthens) the known corresponding results for the classical Laplace operator with zero boundary condition. Our proof, as compared with the known proof for the classical Laplace operator, is entirely new, and is based on the probabilistic potential theory. Its advantage is that it may be applied to a wide class of integro-diffe…
We show short time existence and uniqueness of $\C^{1,1}$ solutions to the mean curvature flow with obstacles, when the obstacles are of class $\C^{1,1}$. If the initial interface is a periodic graph we show long time existence of the evolution and convergence to a minimal constrained hypersurface.
This paper is concerned with an inverse obstacle scattering problem of an acoustic wave for a single incident plane wave and a wave number. The Colton-Sleeman theorem states the unique recovery of sound-soft obstacles with a smooth boundary from the far-field pattern of the scattered wave for a single incident plane wave at a fixed wave number. The wave number has a bound given by the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the negative Laplacian in an open ball that contains the obstacles. In this paper, another proof of the Colton-Sleeman theorem that works also for the case when we have a known {\it …
We study viscosity solutions to a system of nonlinear degenerate parabolic partial integro-differential equations with interconnected obstacles. This type of problem occurs in the context of optimal switching problems when the dynamics of the underlying state variable is described by an $n$-dimensional Levy process. We first establish a continuous dependence estimate for viscosity sub- and supersolutions to the system under mild regularity, growth and structural assumptions on the partial integro-differential operator and on the obstacles and terminal conditions. Using the continuous dependenc…
We present two uniqueness results for the inverse problem of determining an index of refraction by the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement encoded into the scattering amplitude. The first one is a local uniqueness in determining a variable index of refraction by the fixed incident-direction scattering amplitude. The inverse problem is formally posed with such measurement data. The second one is a global uniqueness in determining a constant refractive index by a single far-field measurement. The arguments are based on the study of certain nonlinear and non-selfadjoint interior transmis…
We determine the uniqueness on starlike obstacles by using the cross section data. We see cross section data as spectral measure in polar coordinate at far field. Cross section scattering data suffice to give the local behavior of the wave trace. These local trace formulas contain the geometric information on the obstacle. Local wave trace behavior is connected to the cross section scattering data by Lax-Phillips' formula. Once the scattering data are identical from two different obstacles, the short time behavior of the localized wave trace is expected to give identical heat/wave invariants.
This paper is devoted to the uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering problems for the Helmholtz equation with phaseless far-field data. Some novel techniques are developed to overcome the difficulty of translation invariance induced by a single incident plane wave. In this paper, based on adding a reference ball as an extra artificial impenetrable obstacle (resp. penetrable homogeneous medium) to the inverse obstacle (resp. medium) scattering system and then using superpositions of a fixed plane wave and some point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the location and shap…
An inverse problem of finding an obstacle and the boundary condition on its surface from the fixed-energy scattering data is studied. A new method is developed for a proof of the uniqueness results. The method does not use the discreteness of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian in a bounded domain. Proof of the uniqueness results is based on the fact that the Hilbert space of square integrable functions is separable.
This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by…
The first part of this paper is concerned with the uniqueness to inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering from bounded rigid obstacles in two dimensions. It is proved that a connected polygonal obstacle can be uniquely identified by the far-field pattern over all observation directions corresponding to a single incident plane wave. Our approach is based on a new reflection principle for the first boundary value problem of the Navier equation. In the second part, we propose a revisited factorization method to recover a rigid elastic body with a single far-field pattern.
It is proved that a connected polygonal obstacle coated by thin layers together with its surface impedance function can be determined uniquely from the far field pattern of a single incident plane wave. Our proof is based on the Schwarz reflection principle for the Helmholtz equation satisfying the impedance boundary condition on a flat boundary.
This paper is concerned with uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering with phaseless far-field data at a fixed frequency. In our previous work ({\em SIAM J. Appl. Math. \bf78} (2018), 1737-1753), by utilizing spectral properties of the far-field operator we proved for the first time that the obstacle and the index of refraction of an inhomogeneous medium can be uniquely determined by the phaseless far-field patterns generated by infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves with different directions at a fixed frequency under the a priori assumption that the obstacle is known to b…
In this note, we prove the uniqueness of blowups at singular points of the no-sign obstacle problem $Δu=χ_{_{B_1\backslash \{u=|Du|=0\}}}\ \text{in}\ B_1,$ thus give a positive answer to a problem raised in \cite[Notes of Chaper 7, page 149]{PSU12}.
In this paper, we give a positive answer to a challenging open problem for recovering unknown obstacle (which is usually referred to as a scatterer) by acoustic wave probe associated to the Helmholtz equation. We show that the acoustic scattering amplitude $A(β, α_0, k_0)$, known for all $β\in {\mathbb S}^2$, where ${\mathbb {S}}^2$ is the unit sphere in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, ${α}_0\in {\mathbb{S}}^2$ is fixed, $k_0>0$ is fixed, determines the obstacle $D$ and the boundary condition on $\partial D$ uniquely (The boundary condition on $\partial D$ is either the Dirichlet, or Neumann, or the impedan…
In this paper, we consider the analogous of the obtacle problem in $H_0^1(Ω)$, on the space $W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$. We prove an existence and uniqueness of the result. In a second time, we define the optimal control problem associated. The results, here enclosed, generalize the one obtained by D.R. Adams, S. Lenhard
The Heston stochastic volatility process, which is widely used as an asset price model in mathematical finance, is a paradigm for a degenerate diffusion process where the degeneracy in the diffusion coefficient is proportional to the square root of the distance to the boundary of the half-plane. The generator of this process with killing, called the elliptic Heston operator, is a second-order degenerate elliptic partial differential operator whose coefficients have linear growth in the spatial variables and where the degeneracy in the operator symbol is proportional to the distance to the boun…
The aim of this paper is twofold: to prove, for L^1-data, the existence and uniqueness of an entropy solution to the obstacle problem for nonlinear elliptic equations with variable growth, and to show some convergence and stability properties of the corresponding coincidence set. The latter follow from extending the Lewy--Stampacchia inequalities to the general framework of L^1.
In this paper, we consider the thin obstacle problem in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with data at infinity. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of it. Then we show that its symmetric solutions are actually half-space solutions. Our results are needed when classifying the half-space $(2k-\frac{1}{2})$-homogeneous solutions to the thin obstacle problems in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It is a generalization of one part of Savin-Yu's work \cite{savin2021halfspace} on classifying the half-space $\frac{7}{2}$-homogeneous solutions.
We study existence, structure, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of the obstacle problem \begin{equation*} \inf_{u\in BV_f(Ω)}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}ϕ(x,Du), \end{equation*} where $BV_f(Ω)=\{u\in BV(Ω): u\geq ψ\text{ in }Ω\text{ and } u|_{\partial Ω}=f|_{\partial Ω}\}$, $f \in W^{1,1}_0(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $ψ$ is the obstacle, and $ϕ(x,ξ)$ is a convex, continuous and homogeneous function of degree one with respect to the $ξ$ variable. We show that every minimizer of this problem is also a minimizer of the least gradient problem \[\inf_{u\in \mathcal{A}_f(Ω)}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}ϕ(x,Du),\] where $\m…
We give background which shows the connection between the mean value theorem and the obstacle problem, and then we prove that a set is a mean value set for an elliptic operator of the form $Lu := \partial_i (a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u(x))$ if and only if it arises as the noncontact set of an obstacle problem involving the Green's function of the operator.
This paper is concerned with the uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering problems with the modulus of the far-field patterns co-produced by the obstacle (resp. medium) and the point sources. Based on the superposition of point sources as the incident waves, we overcome the difficulty of translation invariance induced by a single incident plane wave, and rigorously prove that the location and shape of the obstacle as well as its boundary condition or the refractive index can be uniquely determined by the modulus of far-field patterns. This work is different from our previous work on phaseless…
In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect terms in an exterior domain with Navier-slip boundary condition and with far-field vacuum. This problem is related to the motion of the compressible viscous flow past a rotating obstacle. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, provided that the initial mass is small. The initial data and the angular velocity of the obstacle are allowed to have large oscillations.
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of an entropy solution to the A-obstacle problem, for L^1 data. We also extend the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities to the general framework of L^1 data, and show convergence and stability results. We then prove that the free boundary has finite N-1 Hausdorff measure, which completes previous works on this subject by Caffarelli for the Laplace operator and by Lee and Shahgholian for the p-Laplace operator when p>2.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of non-negative entropy solutions of the obstacle problem for stochastic porous media equations. The core of the method is to combine the entropy formulation with the penalization method.
We analyse the obstacle problem for the nonlocal parabolic operator \[\partial_t u + (-Δ)^{s} u - b \cdot \nabla u - \mathcal{I}u - ru,\] where $b\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $r\in\mathbb{R}$, and $\mathcal{I}$ is a nonlocal lower order diffusion operator with respect to the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$. This model appears in the study of American options pricing when the stochastic process governing the stock price is assumed to be a purely jump process. We study the existence and the uniqueness of solutions to the obstacle problem, and we prove optimal regularity of solutions in space, and al…
Existence and uniqueness of the scattering solutions is proved for a class of bounded rough obstacles which is much larger than the class of Lipschitz obstacles. Integral equations method is not used. The approach is based on the representation theorem for selfadjoint operators via closed symmetric quadratic forms and on the limiting absorption principles. For the Dirichlet boundary condition no assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed, for the Neumann boundary condition and the Robin boundary condition some assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed.
This paper is devoted to the uniqueness of inverse acoustic scattering problems with the modulus of near-field data. By utilizing the superpositions of point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the phaseless near-fields collected on an admissible surface can uniquely determine the location and shape of the obstacle as well as its boundary condition and the refractive index of a medium inclusion, respectively. We also establish the uniqueness in determining a locally rough surface from the phaseless near-field data due to superpositions of point sources. These are novel uniq…
This paper is concerned with analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering by an obstacle which is embedded in a two-layered lossy medium separated by an unbounded rough surface. Given a dipole point source, the direct problem is to determine the electromagnetic wave field for the given obstacle and unbounded rough surface; the inverse problem is to reconstruct simultaneously the obstacle and unbounded rough surface from the electromagnetic field measured on a plane surface above the obstacle. For the direct problem, a new boundary integral equation is proposed and its well-posedness is establis…
In this paper, we give a positive answer to a longstanding open problem for determining the shape of an obstacle from the knowledge of the far field pattern for the scattering of time-harmonic elastic wave. We show that the elastic far field pattern by an incoming plane wave with a fixed frequency, a fixed incident direction and a fixed polarization determines the obstacle $D$ and the boundary condition on $\partial D$ uniquely. The boundary condition on $\partial D$ is either the Dirichlet, or the Neumann, or the Robin one.
This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves from an impenetrable obstacle in a piecewise homogeneous medium. The well-posedness of the direct problem is established, employing the integral equation method and then used, in conjunction with the representation in a combination of layer potentials of the solution, to prove a priori estimates of solutions on some part of the interface between the layered media. The inverse problem is also considered in this paper. An uniqueness result is obtained for the first time in determining both the penetrable inter…
This paper is concerned with an inverse obstacle problem which employs the dynamical scattering data of acoustic wave over a finite time interval. The unknown obstacle is assumed to be sound-soft one. The governing equation of the wave is given by the classical wave equation. The wave is generated by the initial data localized outside the obstacle and observed over a finite time interval at a place which is not necessary the same as the support of the initial data. The observed data are the so-called bistatic data. In this paper, an enclosure method which employs the bistatic data and is based…
In this work, we investigate the shape identification and coefficient determination associated with two time-dependent partial differential equations in two dimensions. We consider the inverse problems of determining a convex polygonal obstacle and the coefficient appearing in the wave and Schrödinger equations from a single dynamical data along with the time. With the far field data, we first prove that the sound speed of the wave equation together with its contrast support of convex-polygon type can be uniquely determined, then establish a uniqueness result for recovering an electric potenti…
The purpose of this expository note is to revisit Morawetz's method for obtaining a lower bound on the rate of exponential decay of waves for the Dirichlet problem outside star-shaped obstacles, and to discuss the uniqueness of the sphere as the extremizer of the sharp lower bound proved by Ralston.
In this paper, we solve a longstanding open problem for determining the shape of an obstacle from the knowledge of the electric (or magnetic) far field pattern for the scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic field. We show that the electric (or magnetic) far field patten ${\mathbf{E}}^\infty(\boldsymbolβ, {\boldsymbolα}_0, k_0)$ (or ${\mathbf{H}}^\infty (\boldsymbolβ, {\boldsymbolα}_0, k_0)$), known for all $\boldsymbolβ\in {\mathbb S}^2$, where ${\mathbb {S}}^2$ is the unit sphere in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, ${\boldsymbolα}_0\in {\mathbb{S}}^2$ is fixed, $k_0>0$ is fixed, determines the obstacle…
This paper is concerned with uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering with phaseless far-field data at a fixed frequency. The main difficulty of this problem is the so-called translation invariance property of the modulus of the far-field pattern generated by one plane wave as the incident field. Based on our previous work (J. Comput. Phys. 345 (2017), 58-73), the translation invariance property of the phaseless far-field pattern can be broken by using infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves as the incident fields at a fixed frequency. In this paper, we prove that the obstac…
We consider the time-harmonic acoustic wave scattering by a bounded {\it anisotropic inhomogeneity} embedded in an unbounded {\it anisotropic} homogeneous medium. The material parameters may have discontinuities across the interface between the inhomogeneous interior and homogeneous exterior regions. The corresponding mathematical problem is formulated as a transmission problems for a second order elliptic partial differential equation of Helmholtz type with discontinuous variable coefficients. Using a localised quasi-parametrix based on the harmonic fundamental solution, the transmission prob…
Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle imbedded in an isotropic homogeneous medium. The obstacle is supposed to possess a circular conic point or an edge point on the boundary in three dimensions and a planar corner point in two dimensions. The opening angles of cones and edges are allowed to be any number in $(0,2π)\backslash\{π\}$. We prove that such an obstacle scatters any incoming wave non-trivially (i.e., the far field patterns cannot vanish identically), leading to the absence of real non-scattering wavenumbers. Local and global uniqueness resu…
This paper is concerned with uniqueness in inverse electromagnetic scattering with phaseless far-field pattern at a fixed frequency. In our previous work [{\em SIAM J. Appl. Math.} {\bf 78} (2018), 3024-3039], by adding a known reference ball into the acoustic scattering system, it was proved that the impenetrable obstacle and the index of refraction of an inhomogeneous medium can be uniquely determined by the acoustic phaseless far-field patterns generated by infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves with different directions at a fixed frequency. In this paper, we extend thes…
Similar to the obstacle or medium scattering problems, an important property of the phaseless far field patterns for source scattering problems is the translation invariance. Thus it is impossible to reconstruct the location of the underlying sources. Furthermore, the phaseless far field pattern is also invariant if the source is multiplied by any complex number with modulus one. Therefore, the source can not be uniquely determined, even the multifrequency phaseless far field patterns are considered. By adding a reference point source into the model, we propose a simple and stable phase retrie…
This paper is concerned with reconstructing an acoustic obstacle and its excitation sources from the phaseless near-field measurements. By supplementing some artificial sources to the inverse scattering system, this co-inversion problem can be decoupled into two inverse problems: an inverse obstacle scattering problem and an inverse source problem, and the corresponding uniqueness can be established. This novel decoupling technique requires some extra data but brings in several salient benefits. First, our method is fast and easy to implement. Second, the boundary condition of the obstacle is …
This paper is concerned with uniqueness results in inverse acoustic and electromagnetic scattering problems with phaseless total-field data at a fixed frequency. Motivated by our previous work ({\em SIAM J. Appl. Math. \bf78} (2018), 1737-1753), where uniqueness results were proved for inverse acoustic scattering with phaseless far-field data generated by superpositions of two plane waves as the incident waves at a fixed frequency, in this paper, we use superpositions of two point sources as the incident fields at a fixed frequency and measure the modulus of the acoustic total-field (called ph…
We study an inverse scattering problem at fixed energy for radial magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators on R^2 \ B(0, r\_0), where r\_0 is a positive and arbitrarily small radius. We assume that the magnetic potential A satisfies a gauge condition and we consider the class C of smooth, radial and compactly supported electric potentials and magnetic fields denoted by V and B respectively. If (V, B) and (\tilde{V} , \tilde{B}) are two couples belonging to C, we then show that if the corresponding phase shifts $δ$\_l and \tilde{$δ$}\_l (i.e. the scattering data at fixed energy) coincide for all l $\in…
