We report superconducting kinetic inductance memory (SKIM) element, which can be controlled exclusively by the bias supercurrent, without involving magnetic fields and heating elements. The SKIM is non-volatile memory. The device is made of Nb and it can operate reliable up to 2.8 K. The achieved error rate is as low as one in 100000 operations.
We present exact numerical calculations of supercurrent density, inductance, and impurity-induced flux noise of cylindrical superconducting wires in the nonlocal Pippard regime, which occurs when the Pippard coherence length is larger than the London penetration depth. In this regime the supercurrent density displays a peak away from the surface, and changes sign inside the superconductor, signalling a breakdown of the usual approximation of local London electrodynamics with a renormalized penetration depth. Our calculations show that the internal inductance and the bulk flux noise power is en…
A simple method has been developed for manufacturing a thin film superconducting quantum interferometer (SQI) with ultralow inductance (~10^-13 H). Current-voltage and voltage-field characteristics of the SQI are presented. The basic design equations are obtained and confirmed experimentally. The SQI has been used for the first time to determine the penetration depth of a magnetic field into a film of 50% In-50% Sn alloy.
The patterns of reversible changes in the critical current and discrete current states of a structure in the form of a superconducting quantum interferometer shunted by superconducting inductance, as a result of passing an alternating transport current through the structure and applying an external alternating magnetic field simultaneously with a direct transport current, was established. A new type of discrete stationary state was discovered during the transition of the interferometer to the resistive state caused by the combined action of direct and alternating transport currents.
Comment on "Vortices induced in a superconducting loop by asymmetric kinetic inductance and their detection in transport measurements"
G. R. Berdiyorov,M. V. Milosevic和F. M. Peeters [Phys.
We investigate thin films of conducting aluminium-oxide, also known as granular aluminium, as a material for superconducting high quality, high kinetic inductance circuits. The films are deposited by an optimised reactive DC magnetron sputter process and characterised using microwave measurement techniques at milli-Kelvin temperatures. We show that, by precise control of the reactive sputter conditions, a high room temperature sheet resistance and therefore high kinetic inductance at low temperatures can be obtained. For a coplanar waveguide resonator with 1.5\,k$Ω$ sheet resistance and a kine…
The demand for low-dissipation nanoscale memory devices is as strong as ever. As Moore's Law is staggering, and the demand for a low-power-consuming supercomputer is high, the goal of making information processing circuits out of superconductors is one of the central goals of modern technology and physics. So far, digital superconducting circuits could not demonstrate their immense potential. One important reason for this is that a dense superconducting memory technology is not yet available. Miniaturization of traditional superconducting quantum interference devices is difficult below a few m…
We present a single-electron device for the manipulation of charge states via quantum interference in nanostructured electrodes. Via self-inductance effects, we induce two independent magnetic fluxes in the electrodes and we demonstrate sensitivity to single charge states and magnetic field at variable temperature. Moreover, our approach allows us to demonstrate local and independent control of the single-particle conductance between nano-engineered tunnel junctions in a fully-Superconducting Quantum Interference Single-Electron Transistor (SQUISET), thereby increasing the flexibility of our s…
In this work, we study the current phase relation ($CΦR$) of lithographically fabricated molybdenum germanium (MoGe) nanobridges, which is intimately linked to the nanobridge kinetic inductance. We do this by imbedding the nanobridges in a SQUID. We observe that for temperatures far below $T_c$, the $CΦR$ is linear as long as the condensate is not weakened by the presence of supercurrent. We demonstrate lithographic control over the nanobridge kinetic inductance, which scales with the nanobridge aspect ratio. This allows to tune the SQUID $I_c(B)$ characteristic. The SQUID properties that can …
Transport Properties of Vortex Matter Governed by the Edge Inductance of Superconducting Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ Single Crystals

Investigations into the microwave surface impedance of superconducting resonators have led to the development of single photon counters that rely on kinetic inductance for their operation. While concurrent progress in additive manufacturing, `3D printing', opens up a previously inaccessible design space for waveguide resonators. In this manuscript, we present results from the first synthesis of these two technologies in a titanium, aluminum, vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) superconducting radio frequency resonator which exploits a design unattainable through conventional fabrication means. We find that T…
Microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) are thin film, cryogenic, superconducting resonators. Incident Cooper pair-breaking radiation increases their kinetic inductance, thereby measurably lowering their resonant frequency. For a given resonant frequency, the highest MKID responsivity is obtained by maximizing the kinetic inductance fraction $α$. However, in circuits with $α$ close to unity, the low supercurrent density reduces the maximum number of readout photons before bifurcation due to self-Kerr non-linearity, therefore setting a bound for the maximum $α$ before the noise equivalen…
We have solved numerically the diffusive Usadel equations that describe the spatially-varying superconducting proximity effect in Ti-Al thin-film bi- and trilayers with thickness values that are suitable for Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) to operate as photon detectors with detection thresholds in the frequency range of 50-90 GHz. Using Nam's extension of the Mattis-Bardeen calculation of the superconductor complex conductivity, we show how to calculate the surface impedance for the spatially varying case, and hence the surface impedance quality factor. In addition, we calculate energy-an…
Higgs mode in superconductors, i.e. the collective amplitude mode of the order parameter does not associate with charge nor spin fluctuations, therefore it does not couple to the electromagnetic field in the linear response regime. On the contrary to this common understanding, here, we demonstrate that, if the dc supercurrent is introduced into the superconductor, the Higgs mode becomes infrared active and is directly observed in the linear optical conductivity measurement. We observed a sharp resonant peak at $ω=2Δ$ in the optical conductivity spectrum of a thin-film NbN in the presence of dc…
We address, using concepts of the microscopic theory of superconductivity, parametric amplifiers and kinetic inductance detectors focusing on the interaction of microwave radiation with the superconducting condensate. This interaction was identified recently as the source of the apparent dissipation in microwave superconducting micro-resonators at low temperatures. Since the evaluation of the performance of practical devices based only on the microwave-response is not sufficiently informative about the underlying physical processes, we propose an experimental system to measure the microscopica…

Boron-doped diamond granular thin films are known to exhibit superconductivity with an optimal critical temperature of Tc = 7.2K. Here we report the measured complex surface impedance of Boron-doped diamond films in the microwave frequency range using a resonant technique. Experimentally measured inductance values are in good agreement with estimates obtained from the normal state sheet resistance of the material. The magnetic penetration depth temperature dependence is consistent with that of a fully-gapped s-wave superconductor. Boron-doped diamond films should find application where high ki…
Giant second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is observed in a thin film of an s-wave superconductor NbN, where the time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$-) and space-inversion ($\mathcal{P}$-) symmetries are simultaneously broken by supercurrent injection. We demonstrate that the phase of the second-harmonic (SH) signal flips when the direction of supercurrent is inverted, i.e., the signal is ascribed to the nonreciprocal response that occurs under broken $\mathcal{P}$- and $\mathcal{T}$-symmetries. The temperature dependence of the SH signal exhibits a sharp resonance, …
We investigate superconducting phase transition in superconductor(S)/ferromagnet(F) bilayer with Rasba spin-orbit interaction at S/F interface. This spin-orbit coupling produces spontaneous supercurrents flowing inside the atomic-thickness region near the interface, which are compensated by the screening Meissner currents [S. Mironov and A. Buzdin, Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{118}, 077001 (2017)]. In the case of thin superconducting film the emergence of the spontaneous surface currents causes the increase of the superconducting critical temperature and we calculate the actual value of the critica…
Properties of superconducting nanowires set the performance level for Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors (SNSPD). Reset time in commonly employed large area SNSPDs,5-10ns,is known to be limited by the nanowires kinetic inductance. On the other hand, reduction of the kinetic inductance in small area (waveguide integrated) SNSPDs prevents biasing them close to the critical current due to latching into a permanent resistive state. In order to reduce the reset time in SNSPDs, superconducting nanowires with both low kinetic inductance and fast electron energy relaxation are required. In…

We predict that long-range triplet correlations (LRTC) in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids with extrinsic impurity spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be generated and manipulated by supercurrent flowing in the superconducting leads along the S/F interfaces. The LRTC appear via two basic mechanisms. The essence of the first one is the generation of triplets by the superconducting spin Hall effect. These pairs are long-range in the ferromagnet under the appropriate mutual orientation of the condensate momentum and the ferromagnet magnetization. The second mechanism is based on the singlet-tri…

A magnetic adatom chain, proximity coupled to a conventional superconductor with spin-orbit coupling, exhibits locally an odd-parity, spin-triplet pairing amplitude. We show that the singlet-triplet junction, thus formed, leads to a net spin accumulation in the near vicinity of the chain. The accumulated spins are polarized along the direction of the local $\mathbf{d}$-vector for triplet pairing and generate an enhanced persistent current flowing around the chain. The spin polarization and the "supercurrent" reverse their directions beyond a critical exchange coupling strength at which the sin…
Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy has been used to image electric currents in superconducting films at temperatures down to 20 K. The magnetic stray field of supercurrents in a thin YBaCuO film is mapped into a soft-magnetic coating of permalloy. The so created local magnetization of the ferromagnetic film can be detected by dichroic absorption of polarized x-rays. To enable high-quality measurements in transmission geometry the whole heterostructure of ferromagnet, superconductor and single-crystalline substrate has been thinned to an overall thickness of less than 1 micron. With this no…
We estimate the depairing current of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) by studying the dependence of the nanowires kinetic inductance on their bias current. The kinetic inductance is determined by measuring the resonance frequency of resonator style nanowire coplanar waveguides both in transmission and reflection configurations. Bias current dependent shifts in the measured resonant frequency correspond to the change in the kinetic inductance, which can be compared with theoretical predictions. We demonstrate that the fast relaxation model described in the literature ac…
Ginzburg-Landau (GL) parameters formed the basis for Abrikosov discovery of the quantum vortex of a supercurrent in type-II superconductor with a normal core of size $ξ$, the superconductor coherence length and circulating supercurrent induced magnetic field diverging as $log(1/r)$ from the core with a decay length of the London penetration depth, $λ_L.$ In 1964, J. Pearl predicted the slowly decaying $(1/r^2)$ field around a vortex spreading out to Pearl length, $P_L=2λ_L^2/t$, in a superconductor film of thickness $t < λ_L$. However, his quintessential theory failed to predict the existence …
We report on the fabrication and measurement results of the electrical transport properties of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) weak links, made of PbIn superconductor and Au metal. The maximum supercurrent reaches up to ~ 6 μA at T = 2.3 K and the supercurrent persists even at higher temperature of T = 4.7 K. Magnetic field dependence of the critical current is consistent with a theoretical fit using the narrow junction model. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) was also fabricated using two PbIn-Au-PbIn junctions connected in parallel. Under perpendicular …
We investigate superconducting quantum interference devices consisting of two highly transmissive Josephson junctions coupled by a superconducting loop, all defined in an epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructure. A novel device design allows for independent measurements of the Andreev bound state spectrum within the normal region of a junction and the resulting current-phase relation. We show that knowledge of the Andreev bound state spectrum alone is enough to derive the independently measured phase dependent supercurrent. On the other hand, the opposite relation does not generally hold true as deta…
