Superconducting thin-films are central to the operation of many kinds of quantum sensors and quantum computing devices: Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs), Travelling-Wave Parametric Amplifiers (TWPAs), Qubits, and Spin-based Quantum Memory elements. In all cases, the nonlinearity resulting from the supercurrent is a critical aspect of behaviour, either because it is central to the operation of the device (TWPA), or because it results in non-ideal second-order effects (KID).
Here we present an analysis of supercurrent carrying superconducting thin-films that is based on the generalized Usadel equations. Our analysis framework is suitable for both homogeneous and multilayer thin-films, and can be used to calculate the resulting density of states, superconducting transition temperature, superconducting critical current, complex conductivities, complex surface impedances, transmission line propagation constants, and nonlinear kinetic inductances in the presence of supercurrent. Our analysis gives the scale of kinetic inductance nonlinearity (I*) for a given material combination and geometry, and is important in optimizing the design of detectors and amplifiers in terms of materials, geometries, and dimensions.
To investigate the validity of our analysis across a wide range of supercurrent, we have measured the transition temperatures of superconducting thin-films as a function of DC supercurrent. These measurements show good agreement with our theoretical predictions in the experimentally relevant range of current values.
Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a supercondu…
We demonstrate that spin supercurrents are conserved upon transmission through a conventional superconductor, even in the presence of spin-dependent scattering by impurities with magnetic moments or spin-orbit coupling. This is fundamentally different from conventional spin currents, which decay in the presence of such scattering, and this has important implications for the usage of superconducting materials in spintronic hybrid structures.
We study spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in a mesoscopic superconductor with a spin- splitting field in the presence of co-flowing supercurrent. In such a system, the nonequilibrium state is characterized by charge, spin, energy and spin energy modes. Here we show that in the presence of both spin splitting and supercurrent, all these modes are mutually coupled. As a result, the supercurrent can convert charge imbalance, that in the presence of spin splitting decays on a relatively short scale, to a long-range spin accumulation decaying only via inelastic scattering. This effect enables…
By now it is known that in an s-wave superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor ($SFS$) structure the supercurrent induced by spin singlet pairs can only transmit a short distance of the order of magnetic coherence length. The long-range supercurrent, taking place on the length scale of the normal metal coherence length, will be maintained by equal-spin triplet pairs, which can be generated by magnetic inhomogeneities in the system. In this paper, we show an unusual long-range supercurrent, which can take place in clean $SF_1F_2S$ junction with non-parallel orientation of magnetic moments. The …
Spin current is a central theme in spintronics, and its generation is a keen issue. The spin-polarized current injection from the ferromagnet, spin battery, and spin Hall effect have been used to generate spin current, but Ohmic currents in the normal state are involved in all of these methods. On the other hand, the spin and spin current manipulation by the supercurrent in superconductors is a promising route for dissipationless spintronics. Here we show theoretically that, in two-dimensional superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the generation of dissipationless bulk spin curre…
Iron-based superconductors have great potential for high-power applications due to their prominent high-field properties. One of the central issues in enhancing the critical current density of iron-based superconducting wires is to reveal the roles and limitations of grain boundaries in supercurrent transport. Here, we finely tuned the electronic properties of grain boundaries by doping Ba1-xKxFe2As2 superconductors in a wide range (0.25<x<0.598). It is found that the intra-grain Jcintra peaks near x~0.287, while the inter-grain Jcinter has a maximum at about x~0.458. Remarkably, the grain bou…
We calculate the non-reciprocal critical current and quantify the supercurrent diode effect in Rashba superconductors with arbitrary disorder, using the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation. The non-reciprocity is caused by the helical superconducting state, which appears when both inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. In the absence of disorder, we find a very strong diode effect, with the non-reciprocity exceeding 40% at optimal temperatures, magnetic fields and spin-orbit coupling. We establish that the effect persists even in the presence of strong disorder. We show that the si…
We theoretically demonstrate that the vortex supercurrent can be reversed by odd-frequency Cooper pairs accompanied by surface Andreev bound states. The surface of a three-dimensional superconductor pierced by a flux quantum is considered. We compare the vortex supercurrents near the surface of the spin-singlet $s$-wave and spin-triplet $p_z$-wave superconductors using quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, where the surface is perpendicular to the $z$ direction. We demonstrate that the vortex supercurrent near the surface of a $p_z$-wave superconductor is reversed compared to those far from the s…
A superconductor in a magnetic field has surface currents that prevent the magnetic field from penetrating its interior. These currents carry kinetic energy and mechanical momentum. When the temperature is raised and the system becomes normal the currents disappear. Where do the kinetic energy and mechanical momentum of the currents go, and how? Here we propose that the answer to this question reveals a key necessary condition for materials to be superconductors, that is not part of conventional BCS-London theory: superconducting materials need to have hole carriers.
Within the conventional theory of superconductivity superfluid carriers respond to an applied magnetic field and acquire a speed according to their effective (band) mass. On the other hand it can be shown theoretically and is confirmed experimentally that the mechanical momentum of the supercurrent carriers is given by the product of the supercurrent speed and the $bare$ electron mass. By combining these two well-established facts we show that the conventional BCS-London theory of superconductivity applied to Bloch electrons is $internally$ $inconsistent$. Furthermore, we argue that BCS-London…
A nonmonotonic dependence of the critical Josephson supercurrent on the injection current through a normal metal/ferromagnet weak link from a single domain ferromagnetic strip has been observed experimentally in nanofabricated planar crosslike S-N/F-S Josephson structures. This behavior is explained by 0-pi and pi-0 transitions, which can be caused by the suppression and Zeeman splitting of the induced superconductivity due to interaction between N and F layers, and the injection of spin-polarized current into the weak link. A model considering both effects has been developed. It shows the qua…
We predict that long-range triplet correlations (LRTC) in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids with extrinsic impurity spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be generated and manipulated by supercurrent flowing in the superconducting leads along the S/F interfaces. The LRTC appear via two basic mechanisms. The essence of the first one is the generation of triplets by the superconducting spin Hall effect. These pairs are long-range in the ferromagnet under the appropriate mutual orientation of the condensate momentum and the ferromagnet magnetization. The second mechanism is based on the singlet-tri…
We investigate transverse charge and spin dc supercurrents in a ferromagnet coupled to a superconductor where the ferromagnet has inhomogeneous magnetic structure. These transverse supercurrents arise from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the transverse charge supercurrent is essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. Possible candidates of magnetic structure to verify our prediction are also discussed.
We investigate superconducting phase transition in superconductor(S)/ferromagnet(F) bilayer with Rasba spin-orbit interaction at S/F interface. This spin-orbit coupling produces spontaneous supercurrents flowing inside the atomic-thickness region near the interface, which are compensated by the screening Meissner currents [S. Mironov and A. Buzdin, Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{118}, 077001 (2017)]. In the case of thin superconducting film the emergence of the spontaneous surface currents causes the increase of the superconducting critical temperature and we calculate the actual value of the critica…
In the standard theory of superconductivity, the origin of superconductivity is the electron-pairing. The induced current by a magnetic field is calculated by the linear response to the vector potential, and the supercurrent is identified as the dissipationless flow of the paired-electrons, while single electrons flow with dissipation. This supercurrent description suffers from the following serious problems: 1) it contradicts the reversible superconducting-normal phase transition in a magnetic field observed in type I superconductors; 2) the gauge invariance of the supercurrent induced by a m…
We show that the two-band nature of noncentrosymmetric superconductors leads naturally to an anomalous Josephson current appearing at zero phase difference in a clean noncentrosymmetric superconductor/ferromagnet/noncentrosymmetric superconductor junction. The two-band nature provides two sets of Andreev bound states which carry two supercurrents with different amplitudes. When the magnetization direction of the ferromagnet is suitably chosen, two supercurrents experience opposite phase shifts from the conventional sinusoidal current-phase relation. Then the total Josephson current results in …
Recently, a theoretical study [Li {\it et al.},~npj Quantum Materials 6, 36 (2021)] investigated a model of a disordered $d$-wave superconductor, and reported local time-reversal symmetry breaking current loops for sufficiently high disorder levels. Since the pure $d$-wave superconducting state does not break time-reversal symmetry, it is surprising that such persistent currents arise purely from nonmagnetic disorder. Here we perform a detailed theoretical investigation of such disorder-induced orbital currents, and show that the occurrence of the currents can be traced to local extended $s$-w…
Edge supercurrents in superconductors have long been an elusive target. Interest in them has reappeared in the context of topological superconductivity. We report the observation of a robust edge supercurrent in the Weyl superconductor MoTe2. In a magnetic field B, fluxoid quantization generates a periodic modulation of the edge condensate observable as a "fast-mode" oscillation of the critical current Ic versus B. Remarkably, the fast-mode frequency is distinct from the conventional Fraunhofer oscillation displayed by the bulk supercurrent. We confirm that the fast mode frequency increases wi…
By converting conventional spin-singlet Cooper pairs to polarized spin-triplet pairs, it is possible to sustain long-ranged spin-polarized supercurrents flowing through strongly polarized ferromagnets. Obtaining such a conversion via spin-orbit interactions, rather than magnetic inhomogeneities, has recently been explored in the literature. A challenging aspect with regard to experimental detection has been that in order for Rashba spin-orbit interactions, present e.g. at interfaces due to inversion symmetry breaking, to generate such long-ranged supercurrents, an out-of-plane component of the…
Higgs mode in superconductors, i.e. the collective amplitude mode of the order parameter does not associate with charge nor spin fluctuations, therefore it does not couple to the electromagnetic field in the linear response regime. On the contrary to this common understanding, here, we demonstrate that, if the dc supercurrent is introduced into the superconductor, the Higgs mode becomes infrared active and is directly observed in the linear optical conductivity measurement. We observed a sharp resonant peak at $ω=2Δ$ in the optical conductivity spectrum of a thin-film NbN in the presence of dc…
Since the discovery of the Meissner effect the superconductor to normal (S-N) phase transition in the presence of a magnetic field is understood to be a first order phase transformation that is reversible under ideal conditions and obeys the laws of thermodynamics. The reverse (N-S) transition is the Meissner effect. This implies in particular that the kinetic energy of the supercurrent is not dissipated as Joule heat in the process where the superconductor becomes normal and the supercurrent stops. In this paper we analyze the entropy generation and the momentum transfer between the supercurr…
We report on an experimental investigation of the combined effect of nonequilibrium quasiparticle injection and supercurrent in superconducting aluminum wires. At low temperature, we observe the supercurrent-induced coupling of energy and charge imbalance with spectral resolution. At high magnetic fields, in the presence of a Zeeman splitting of the density of states, we find evidence for an additional spin-dependent coupling which has been recently predicted theoretically.
We discuss a new mechanism of microwave absorption in s- and d-wave superconductors, which arises in the presence of a dc supercurrent in the system. It produces a contribution to the ac conductivity that is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time. This contribution also determines the supercurrent dependence of the conductivity. It may significantly exceed the conventional contribution because in typical superconductors the inelastic relaxation time is several orders of magnitude longer than the elastic one. We show that the aforementioned contribution to the conductivity …

In most superconductors, optical excitations require impurity scattering or the presence of multiple bands. This is because in clean single-band superconductors, the combination of particle-hole and inversion symmetries prevents momentum-conserving transitions. In this work we show how the flow of supercurrent can lead to new contributions to optical conductivity. As supercurrent breaks inversion symmetry, transitions across the superconducting gap become allowed even in clean superconductors and dominate over impurity-induced contributions for energies comparable to the gap width. The respons…
We investigate Josephson junctions among conventional superconducting wires, in the presence of externally applied Zeeman fields and supercurrents. We demonstrate that the critical Josephson current and the current-phase relation of the junction depends on the relative orientation of the applied Zeeman fields and supercurrents. The controllability of the Josephson current relies on the stabilization of conventional superconductivity in high magnetic fields, due to the restoration of the opposite momentum opposite spin projection resonance at the Fermi level. We assert that our results can lead…
We introduce the general formalism to describe spin torques induced by the supercurrents injected from the adjacent superconducting electrodes into the spin-textured ferromagnets. By considering the adiabatic limit for the equal-spin superconducting correlations in the ferromagnet we show that the supercurrent can generate both the field-like spin transfer torque and the spin-orbital torque. These dissipationless spin torques are expressed through the current-induced corrections to the effective field derived from the system energy. The general formalism is applied to show that the supercurren…
