The interface properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors have been of interest for many years, and play an essential role in Josephson junctions, superconducting cables, and microwave electronics. In particular, the maximum critical current achievable in high-Tc wires and tapes is well known to be limited by the presence of grain boundaries, regions of mismatch between crystallites with misoriented crystalline axes. In studies of single, artificially fabricated grain boundaries the striking observation has been made that the critical current Jc of a grain boundary junction depends exponentially on the misorientation angle. Until now microscopic understanding of this apparently universal behavior has been lacking. We present here the results of a microscopic evaluation based on a construction of fully 3D YBCO grain boundaries by molecular dynamics. With these structures, we calculate an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian for the d-wave superconductor with a grain boundary. The critical current is then shown to follow an exponential suppression with grain boundary angle. We identify the buildup of charge inhomogeneities as the dominant mechanism for the suppression of the supercurrent.
With simple but exactly solvable model, we investigate the supercurrent transferring through the c-axis cuprate superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions with the clean normal metal much thicker than its coherence length. It is shown that the supercurrent as a function of thickness of the normal metal decreases much slower than the exponential decaying expected by the proximity effect. The present result may account for the giant proximity effect observed in the c-axis cuprate SNS junctions.
We systematically explore the exquisiteness of Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer(BCS) theory where the BCS-type electron-phonon interaction is unambiguously reinforced as the only viable superglue in cuprate superconductors because phonon-induced scattering is effectively nil for Cooper pairs (in its original form), and also phonons are never required to Bose-condense. Here, we prove that (i) the Cooper-pair binding energy can be strengthened to obtain high superconductor transition temperature (Tsc) and (ii) the existence of a generalized electron-phonon potential operator that can induce the finite-t…
Pairs fluctuation supercurrents and inverse lifetimes were measured on epitaxial c-axis junctions of the cuprates in the pseudogap regime, with a $PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ barrier sandwiched in between two $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ or doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ electrodes, with or without magnetic fields parallel to the a-b planes. All junctions had a $\rm T_c(high)\approx 85-90$ K and a $\rm T_c(low)\approx 50-55$ K electrodes, allowing us to study pairs fluctuation supercurrents and inverse life times in between these two temperatures. In junctions with a pseudogap electrode under zero field, an excesss curren…
Iron-based superconductors have great potential for high-power applications due to their prominent high-field properties. One of the central issues in enhancing the critical current density of iron-based superconducting wires is to reveal the roles and limitations of grain boundaries in supercurrent transport. Here, we finely tuned the electronic properties of grain boundaries by doping Ba1-xKxFe2As2 superconductors in a wide range (0.25<x<0.598). It is found that the intra-grain Jcintra peaks near x~0.287, while the inter-grain Jcinter has a maximum at about x~0.458. Remarkably, the grain bou…
Strong correlations are known to severely reduce the mobility of charge carriers near half-filling and thus have an important influence on the current carrying properties of grain boundaries in the high-$T_c$ cuprates. In this work we present an extension of the Gutzwiller projection approach to treat electronic correlations below as well as above half-filling consistently. We apply this method to investigate the critical current through grain boundaries with a wide range of misalignment angles for electron- and hole-doped systems. For the latter excellent agreement with experimental data is f…
We argue that nuclear magnetic resonance experiments are a site-sensitive probe for the electronic spectrum in the mixed state of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. Within a spin-fermion model, we show that the Doppler-shifted electronic spectrum arising from the circulating supercurrent changes the low-frequency behavior of the imaginary part of the spin-susceptibility. For a hexagonal vortex lattice, we predict that these changes lead to {\it (a)} a unique dependence of the $^{63}$Cu spin lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1$, on resonance frequency, and {\it (b)} a temperature dependence of $T_1$ which va…
Experimental determination of the magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs can shed light on the pairing symmetry in cuprates. We argue that the intrinsic magnetic moments of the Cooper pairs can be detected in experiments with superconducting thin-film rings. At sufficiently low temperatures the magnetic field generated by the supercurrent, can cause the ordering of these magnetic moments that produces changes in the supercurrent and magnetic induction distributions, the heat capacity and magnetic moment of the ring. It is shown that the intrinsic magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs can be extract…
Low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM) has been used to image the supercurrent distribution in ramp-type Josephson junctions between Nb and either the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-y}$ or the hole-doped cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$. For zigzag-shaped devices in the short junction limit the critical current is strongly suppressed at zero applied magnetic field. The LTSEM images show, that this is due to the Josephson current counterflow in neighboring 0 and $π$ facets, which is induced by the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter in the cuprates. Thus, LTSEM provides imagin…
Superconducting cuprates and pnictides composed of CuO2 or AsFe planes respectively with intercalated insulating layers, are at the crossroads of three families of crystalline solids: metals, doped Mott insulators, and ferroelectrics. In the latter atomic displacements play a key role. Both the metallic and the doped insulator approaches to high temperature superconductivity are essentially electronic ones and do not directly involve the lattice. By contrast, in a recently proposed Bond Contraction Pairing (BCP) model, contraction of in-plane Cu-O (or As-Fe) bonds plays an essential role in th…
We propose and implement a direct experimental test for subdominant superconducting phases with broken time-reversal symmetry in d-wave superconductors. The critical current of 45-degree asymmetric grain boundary junctions are shown to be extremely sensitive to the predicted onset of a complex order parameter at (110)-surfaces and near magnetic impurities. Measurements in YBCO and Ni-doped YBCO junctions indicate that the symmetry at the surface is consistent with pure d-wave at all temperatures, putting limits on the magnitude and chiral domain structure of any subdominant symmetry component.
As nature junction geometry of the d-wave cuprate superconductor/insulator/the mixture of s-wave and d-wave cuprate superconductor, the upmost surface junction of intrinsic Josephson junction stack fabricated on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+d}$ single crystals was measured and discussed. We successfully observed half-integral microwave induced steps as well as integral steps with resistively shunting technology, which shows the evidence of second order supercurrent, consistent with Tanaka's theory.
How does Fermi surface develop in cuprates upon doping of a parent Mott insulator, does it consist of large barrels or small pockets, which of them is responsible for superconductivity and what is a role of the pseudogap? Those are actively debated questions, important for understanding of high temperature superconductivity. Here we analyze doping dependence of interlayer tunneling in cuprates. We observe that with decreasing doping the supercurrent is rapidly decreasing, but the quasiparticle resistance at high bias remains almost unchanged. This indicates that Cooper pair and quasiparticle c…
In recent years, a number of nodal superconductors have been identified; d-wave superconductors in high T_c cuprates, CeCoIn$_5$, and κ-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2, 2D f-wave superconductor in Sr_2RuO_4 and hybrid s+g-wave superconductor in YNi_2B_2C. In this work we conduct a theoretical study of nodal superconductors in the presence of supercurrent. For simplicity, we limit ourselves to d-wave and 2D f-wave superconductors. We compute the quasiparticle density of states and the temperature dependence of the depairing critical current in nodal superconductors, both of which are accessible experimentally.
We present a possible explanation for a recently observed magnetic field induced charge order in cuprate superconductors (Edkins et al.~arXiv:1802.04673 [cond-mat.supr-con]). We argue that it arises from the reorganization of spin-vortex-induced loop current (SVILC) pattern due to supercurrent-flow caused by the magnetic field. The reorganization is from the most stable tiling of $4a times 6a$ spin-vortex quartets ($a$ is the lattice constant in the CuO$_2$ plane, and a spin-vortex quartet is stable of unit of spin-vortices that contains four holes, four spin-vortices, and four SVILCs) to that…
The Fourier transform of the observed magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$ high-temperature superconductors has a prominent low-frequency peak with two smaller neighbouring peaks. The separation and positions of these three peaks are almost independent of doping. This pattern has been explained previously by rather special, exquisitely detailed, Fermi-surface reconstruction. We propose that these MQO have a different origin, and their frequencies are related to the bilayer and inter-bilayer electron hopping rather than directly to the areas of tiny Fermi-surface po…
We investigate in-plane quasiparticle tunneling across thin film grain boundary junctions (GBJs) of the electron-doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ in magnetic fields up to $B=16 $T, perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ layers. The differential conductance in the superconducting state shows a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) due to zero energy surface Andreev bound states. With increasing temperature $T$, the ZBCP vanishes at the critical temperature $T_c\approx29 $K if B=0, and at $T=12 $K for B=16 T. As the ZBCP is related to the macroscopic phase coherence of the superconducting state, we arg…
We investigate several theoretical possibilities for the suppression in a c-axis magnetic field of the magnetic resonance recently observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments on YBCO_{6.6}. We find that neither the Doppler shift of the quasiparticle states caused by supercurrents outside the vortex core, nor an assumed spatially uniform suppression of the coherence factors or spectral gap due to the applied field, can account for the observed effect. In contrast, suppressing the gap or the coherence factors in the vortex core to zero is consistent with the data. We demonstrate that an…
Understanding what makes Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_1$Cu$_2$O$_x$ (Bi-2212) the only high critical current density ($J_c$), high temperature superconductor (HTS) capable of being made as a round wire (RW) is important intellectually because high $J_c$ RW Bi-2212 breaks the paradigm that forces biaxially textured REBCO and uniaxially textured (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ (Bi-2223) into tape geometries that reproduce the strong anisotropy of the native crystal structure and force expensive fabrication routes to ensure the best possible texture with minimum density of high angle grain boundaries. The …
Grain boundary bicrystal Josephson junctions of the electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$CuO$_2$ ($x = 0.15$) were grown by pulsed laser deposition. BaTiO$_3$-buffered $24\,^\circ$ [001]-tilt symmetric SrTiO$_3$ bicrystals were used as substrates. We examined both Cooper pair (CP) and quasiparticle (QP) tunneling by electric transport measurements at temperatures down to 4.2\,K. CP tunneling revealed an extraordinary high critical current density for electron-doped cuprates of $j_c > 10^3\,$A/cm$^2$ at 4.2\,K. Thermally activated phase slippage was observed as dissipati…
We consider the effect of classical phase fluctuations on the quasiparticle spectra of underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors in the pseudogap regime above $T_c$. We show that photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy data are well accounted for by a simple model in which mean field d-wave quasiparticles are semiclasically coupled to supercurrents induced by fluctuating unbound vortex-antivortex pairs. We argue that the data imply that transverse phase fluctuations are important at temperatures above $T_c$, while longitudinal fluctuations are unimportant at all temperatures.
We calculate the s- and d-wave superconductor order parameter in the vicinity of a tilt grain boundary. We do this self-consistently within the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, using a realistic microscopic model of the grain boundary. We present the first self-consistent calculations of supercurrent flows in such boundaries, obtaining the current-phase characteristics of grain boundaries in both s-wave and d-wave superconductors.
Fine grained polycrystalline samples of MgB(2) superconductor were synthesized from the elements to contain < 5 % of impurity phases, according to X-ray powder diffractometry. The superconductive transition was sharp with a midpoint Tc = 38.5 K. The magnetization in the vortex state was studied as a function of applied field H, temperature T, and time t. From the equilibrium magnetization, the London penetration depth was obtained. The supercurrent density J(T,H,t) in the vortex state (derived from the irreversible magnetization) decreases approximately linearly with T, in contrast to the quas…
We calculate the critical current $I_c$ across in-plane (001) tilt grain boundary junctions of high temperature superconductors. We solve for the electronic states corresponding to the electron-doped cuprates, two slightly different hole-doped cuprates, and an extremely underdoped hole-doped cuprate in each half-space, and weakly connect the two half-spaces by either specular or random quasiparticle tunneling. We treat symmetric, straight, and fully asymmetric junctions with s-, extended-s-, or d$_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameters. For symmetric junctions with random grain boundary tunneling, o…
In this work we investigate the effect of each different heat treatment stage in the fabrication of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d superconducting wires on intra-grain and inter-grain superconducting properties. We measure magnetic critical temperature Tc values and transport critical current density Jc at temperatures from 4 K to 40 K and in fields up to 7 T. From an analysis of the temperature dependence of the self-field critical current density Jc(T) that takes into account weak link behavior and proximity effect, we study the grain boundaries (GB) transparency to supercurrents and we establish a relatio…
We report that single crystals of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 with Tc = 32 K have a pinning potential, U0, as high as 10^4 K, with U0 showing very little field depend-ence. In addition, the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals become isotropic at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, resulting in a very rigid vortex lattice, even in fields very close to Hc2. The rigid vortices in the two dimensional (Ba,K)Fe2As2 distinguish this compound from 2D high Tc cuprate superconductors with 2D vortices, and make it being capable of cearrying very high critical current.Flux jumping due to high Jc was also observed in lar…
Tunneling and theoretical studies have suggested that Andreev bound states form at certain surfaces of unconventional superconductors. Through studies of the temperature and field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab at low temperature, we have found strong evidence for the presence of these states in clean single crystal YBCO and BSCCO. Crystals cut to expose a [110] interface show a strong upturn in lambda_ab at around 7K, when the field is oriented so that the supercurrents flow around this surface. In YBCO this upturn is completely suppressed by a field of ~0.1 T…
The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) are an important new class of superconducting materials. As with any new superconductor with a high transition temperature and upper critical field, there is a need to establish what their applications potential might be. Applications require high critical current densities, so the usefulness of any new superconductor is determined both by the capability to develop strong vortex pinning and by the absence or ability to overcome any strong current-limiting mechanisms of which grain boundaries in the cuprates are a cautionary example. In this review we first co…
The lower critical field of the grains, $H_{c1}$, and the intragrain critical current density, $J_{c}$, were determined for the superconducting ruthenate-cuprate RuSr$_{2}$Gd$_{1.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10-δ}$ [Ru-1222(Gd)] through a systematic study of the hysteresis in magnetoresistance loops. A reliable method, based on the effects of the magnetization of the grains on the net local field at the intergranular junctions is provided, circumventing the problem of the strong masking of the superconducting diamagnetic signal by the ferromagnetic background. The temperature dependency of $H_{c1}…
For more than 30 years, the remarkable superconducting properties of REBa$_\textrm{2}$Cu$_\textrm{3}$O$_\textrm{7-x}$ (RE = rare earth) compounds have triggered research studies across the world. Accordingly, significant progresses have been made both from a basic understanding and a fabrication processes perspective. Yet, today, the major technological bottleneck towards the spread of their practical uses remains the exponential decay of their critical current with grain misorientation in polycrystalline samples. In this work, we used an ionic liquid to apply extremely high transverse electri…
The AC susceptibility at zero DC magnetic field of a polycrystalline sample of LaFeAsO_{0.94}F_{0.06} (T_c = 24 K) has been investigated as a function of the temperature, the amplitude of the AC magnetic field (in the range Hac = 0.003 - 4 Oe) and the frequency (in the range f = 10 kHz - 100 kHz). The temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility exhibits the typical two-step transition arising from the combined response of superconduncting grains and intergranular weak-coupled medium. The intergranular part of the susceptibility strongly depends on both the amplitude and the frequency of th…
The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8}$ below approximately 25 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_{c}$ where $j_{c}$ is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter. Similar effects were observed in other cuprates and in an organic superconductor.
In order to clarify the high-$T_c$ mechanism in inhomogeneous cuprate layer superconductors, we deduce and find the correlation strength not revealed before, contributing to the formation of the Cooper pair and the 2-D density of state, and demonstrate the pairing symmetry in the superconductors still controversial. To the open questions, the fitting and analysis of the diverging effective mass with decreasing doping, extracted from the acquired quantum-oscillation data in underdoped YBCOO$_{6+x}$ superconductors, can provide solutions. Here, the results of the fitting using the extended Brink…
Thin films of the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Ba122:P) were fabricated on polycrystalline metal-tape substrates with two kinds of in-plane grain boundary alignments (well aligned (4 deg.) and poorly aligned (8 deg.)) by pulsed laser deposition. The poorly aligned substrate is not applicable to cuprate-coated conductors because the in-plane alignment >4 deg. results in exponential decay of the critical current density (Jc). The Ba122:P film exhibited higher Jc at 4 K when grown on the poorly aligned substrate than on the well-aligned substrate even though the crystallinity was po…
We show that SIS Josephson junctions have a threshold resistance, above which the Josephson coupling and the supercurrents become extremely small, due to the shrinking of the Cooper pair size during the Josephson tunneling. Accordingly, the threshold resistance is smaller for higher Tc superconductors with small Cooper pair size and for the insulating barrier with higher resistance. This understanding agrees with the observations in SIS junctions of low Tc superconductors, such as Sn, Pb, and Nb. For MgB2 it explains why the big gap does not show the supercurrents, unlike the small gap. Furthe…
We report the temperature T and oxygen concentration dependences of the penetration depth of grain-aligned YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} with δ= 0.0, 0.3 and 0.43. The values of the in-plane λ_{ab}(0) and out-of-plane λ_{c}(0) penetration depths, the low temperature linear term in λ_{ab}(T), and the ratio λ_{c}(0) /λ_{ab}(T) were found to increase with increasing $δ$. The systematic changes of the linear term in λ_{ab}(T) with T_c found here and in recent work on HgBa_2Ca_{n-1} Cu_nO_{2n+2+δ} (n = 1 and 3) are discussed.
We have fabricated a series of ex situ copper sheathed powder-in-tube MgB2 wires with 20% by volume Ag, Pb, In, and Ga metal added to the MgB2 powder. We find the transport critical current of these wires increases significantly with the addition of specific metals to the core filament. In particular, the critical current density (Jc) of the MgB2/Ga(20%) wire is in excess of 5x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10K in self field, nearly 50 times that of the MgB2/Ag(20%) wire. The temperature dependent Jc of all wires is well described as an ensemble of clean S/N/S junctions in which the relevant parameters are th…
The appearance of the Fermi arcs or gapless regions at the nodes of the Fermi surface just above the critical temperature is described through self-consistent calculations in an electronic disordered medium. We develop a model for cuprate superconductors based on an array of Josephson junctions formed by grains of inhomogeneous electronic density derived from a phase separation transition. This approach provides physical insights to the most important properties of these materials like the pseudogap phase as forming by the onset of local (intragrain) superconducting amplitudes and the zero res…
Signatures of room-temperature superconductivity emerging in two-dimensional domains within the new Bi/Pb-based ceramic cuprate superconductors at ambient pressure
Even after 25 years of research the pairing mechanism and - at least for electron doped compounds - also the order parameter symmetry of the high transition temperature (high-Tc) cuprate superconductors is still under debate. One of the reasons is the complex crystal structure of most of these materials. An exception are the infinite layer (IL) compounds consisting essentially of CuO2 planes. Unfortunately, these materials are difficult to grow and, thus, there are only few experimental investigations. Recently, we succeeded in depositing high quality films of the electron doped IL compound Sr…
The properties of the grain boundaries (GBs) are of significant importance in high-Tc cuprates. Most large scale applications of cuprate superconductors involve usage of sintered compounds. The critical current density and the ability to trap high magnetic flux inside the sample depend largely on the quality of the GBs. Zn has the ability to pin vortices but it also degrades superconductivity. In this study we have investigated the effect of Zn impurity on the intergrain coupling properties in high-quality La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 sintered samples with different hole concentrations, p (\equiv x), ov…
The current-phase relation (CPR) for asymmetric 45 degree Josephson junctions between two d-wave superconductors has been predicted to exhibit an anomalous periodicity. We have used the single-junction interferometer to investigate the CPR for this kind of junctions in YBCO thin films. Half-fluxon periodicity has been experimentally found, providing a novel source of evidence for the d-wave symmetry of the pairing state of the cuprates.
The interpretation of how superconductivity disappears in cuprates at large hole doping has been controversial. To address this issue, we present an experimental study of single-crystal and thin film samples of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) with $x\ge0.25$. In particular, measurements of bulk susceptibility on LSCO crystals with $x=0.25$ indicate an onset of diamagnetism at $T_{c1}=38.5$ K, with a sharp transition to a phase with full bulk shielding at $T_{c2}=18$ K, independent of field direction. Strikingly, the in-plane resistivity only goes to zero at $T_{c2}$. Inelastic neutron scatterin…
We show that an electronic phase separation (EPS) transition described by the an appropriate theory yields regions of low free energy forming grains of low and high charge densities. These local differences in the potential energy are studied numerically and used here for the first time as the origin of an attractive interaction that gives rise to local pair formation. The resistivity transition $T_c$ occurs due to Josephson coupling among these superconducting regions or grains. Using this approach within the Bogoliubov-deGennes calculations we derive the Gaussian shape of $T_c$ against the e…
We propose a new phase of matter, an electronic phase separation transition that starts near the upper pseudogap and segregates the holes into high and low density domains. The Cahn-Hilliard approach is used to follow quantitatively this second order transition. The resulting grain boundary potential confines the charge in domains and favors the development of intragrain superconducting amplitudes. The zero resistivity transition arises only when the intergrain Josephson coupling $E_J$ is of the order of the thermal energy and phase locking among the superconducting grains takes place. We show…
We show that an electronic phase transition described by the Cahn-Hilliard equation has important applications to cuprate superconductors. The simulations of the local charge density and free energy reveal two main features: i) The segregation process creates tiny isolated regions with potential wells where the holes can be bound in single-particle levels. ii) The clustering process also gives rise to an effective two-body pairing interactions and superconducting amplitudes $Δ_{sc}(\vec r)$ at low temperatures. The resulting system resembles a granular superconductor with the resistivity trans…
Multiple functional ionic and electronic orders are observed in high temperature superconducting cuprates. The charge density wave order is one of them and it is spatially localized in spatial regions of the material. It is also known that the oxygen interstitials introduced by chemical intercalation self-organize in different oxygen rich regions corresponding with hole rich regions in the Cu$O_2$ layers left empty by the charge density wave order domains. However, what happens in between these two order is not known, and neither there is a method to control this spatial separation. Here we de…
We have succeeded in the synthesis of Re-doped $HgBa_{2}Ca_{n-1}Cu_{n}O_{2(n+1)+δ}$ quickly by a sealed tube technique with a bit of CsCl flux. Powder X-ray diffraction measurement revealed that the single phases of Re-doped $HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), $HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6+δ}$ (Hg1212), and $HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ}$ (Hg1223) formed in 4 h. The sample grains exhibited plate-like crystals with the sizes of 20$\times$20$\times$1 $μm^{3}$ and the chemical compositions of Hg1201, Hg1212, and Hg1223. The superconducting transitions were observed at 25 K for Hg1201, 122 for Hg1212, and 133 K f…
The renormalization factor, dubbed ``quasiparticle charge'' Z_e, of the coupling between the supercurrent and quasiparticles was analyzed in the context of high temperature cuprates in a recent paper by Ioffe and Millis. They observed that Z_e in cuprates deviates from the BCS value (Z_e=1), which was interpreted as the proximity effect near a Mott insulator. Here we show that the deviation from Z_e=1 can occur, in general, even in the absence of quasiparticle interactions, when the superconducting order coexists with another order parameter with the same internal symmetry. As an example, we c…
We show that despite the low anisotropy, strong vortex pinning and high irreversibility field Hirr close to the upper critical field Hc2 of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the critical current density Jgb across [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs) of thin film Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals is strongly depressed, similar to high-Tc cuprates. Our results suggest that weak-linked GBs are characteristic of both cuprates and pnictides because of competing orders, low carrier density, and unconventional pairing symmetry.
Andreev reflection is investigated in layered anisotropic normal metal / superconductor (N/S) systems in the case of an energy gap Δin S not negligible with respect to the Fermi energy E_F, as it probably occurs with high critical temperature superconductors (HTS). We find that in these limits retro-reflectivity, which is a fundamental feature of Andreev reflection, is broken modifying sensitively transport across S/N interfaces. We discuss the consequences for supercurrents in HTS Josephson junctions and for the midgap states in S-N contacts
Unique properties of a ballistic DND or grain boundary D-D junction, including doubly degenerate ground state with tunable potential barrier between the "up" and "down" states and non-quantized spontaneous magnetic flux, make it a good candidate for a solid state qubit. The role of quantum "spin" variable is played by the sign of equilibrium superconducting phase difference on the junction, which is revealed in the direction of spontaneous supercurrent flow in equilibrium. Possibilities of design-specific simultaneous operations with several integrated qubits are discussed.
High critical temperature superconductors have zero power consumption and could be used to produce ideal electric power lines. The principal obstacle in fabricating superconducting wires and tapes is grain boundaries-the misalignment of crystalline orientations at grain boundaries, which is unavoidable for polycrystals, largely deteriorates critical current density. Here, we report that High critical temperature iron pnictide superconductors have advantages over cuprates with respect to these grain boundary issues. The transport properties through well-defined bicrystal grain boundary junction…
We propose several tests of the idea that the electron is fractionalized in the underdoped and undoped cuprates. These include the ac Josephson effect, and tunneling into small superconducting grains in the Coulomb blockade regime. In both cases, we argue that the results are qualitatively modified from the conventional ones if the insulating tunnel barrier is fractionalized. These experiments directly detect the possible existence of the chargon - a charge $e$ spinless boson - in the insulator. The effects described in this paper provide a means to probing whether the undoped cuprate (despite…
Transport and thermodynamic properties of a sintered pellet of the newly discovered $MgB_2$ superconductor have been measured to determine the characteristic critical magnetic fields and critical current densities. Both resistive transition and magnetization data give similar values of the upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, with magnetization data giving $dH_{c2}/dT=0.44~T/K$ at the transition temperature of $T_c=40.2 K$. Close to the transition temperature, magnetization curves are thermodynamically reversible, but at low temperatures the trapped flux can be on the order of one Tesla. The value …
We review the recent measurements of the current-phase relation in cuprate Josephson junctions. Special attention is paid to 45 degree grain boundary junctions and to c-axis junctions between YBCO and Nb. It is shown that the anomalous properties of such junctions which have been found experimentally (large second harmonic of the current phase relation, sign change of the first harmonic as a function of temperature) are qualitatively consistent with the d-wave symmetry of pairing in the cuprates. It is argued that in order to describe the data quantitatively, quantum fluctuations of the order …
