We have succeeded in the synthesis of Re-doped $HgBa_{2}Ca_{n-1}Cu_{n}O_{2(n+1)+δ}$ quickly by a sealed tube technique with a bit of CsCl flux. Powder X-ray diffraction measurement revealed that the single phases of Re-doped $HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), $HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6+δ}$ (Hg1212), and $HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ}$ (Hg1223) formed in 4 h. The sample grains exhibited plate-like crystals with the sizes of 20$\times$20$\times$1 $μm^{3}$ and the chemical compositions of Hg1201, Hg1212, and Hg1223. The superconducting transitions were observed at 25 K for Hg1201, 122 for Hg1212, and 133 K for Hg1223 in the magnetic susceptibility. These results indicate that the developed method is useful for the fabrication of Hg-based superconducting wires.
A first-order phase transition is found in the multilayer cuprate superconductor, HgBa$_2$Ca$_4$Cu$_5$O$_y$ (Hg-1245), with a superconducting transition temperature of 108 K, under zero magnetic field. We observed a hysteretic specific heat jump around 41 K. We conclude that the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairs have a residual entropy due to fluctuations in the phase difference between the five CuO$_2$ planes in a unit cell of Hg-1245, and that this fluctuation freezes below the first-order phase transition temperature.
It is well established that the hole density in the prototypical superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is very inhomogeneous due to Sr-dopant induced disorder. On the other hand, until recently it is widely believed that the hole distribution in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ doped by interstitial oxygen is much more uniform. Recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate, however, that the charge inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is close to that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. Calculations performed in the present paper confirm this observation. We also show t…
Electronic Raman scattering with in and out of (ab) plane polarizations have been performed on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d in a slightly underdoped single crystal with a critical temperature Tc=122 K. We find that the d-wave pairing gap at the antinodes is higher in energy (14 kBTc) than in other cuprates and that it varies very slowly up to Tc. This hints at a strong coupling nature of the pairing mechanism. Interestingly, we reveal that the pairing-gap feature in the Raman response displays a complex peak-dip-hump structure, in a fashion reminiscent of what observed by angle resolved photo-emission spec…
The lamellar cuprate superconductors exhibit the highest ambient-pressure superconducting transition temperatures (T$_C$) and, after more than three decades of extraordinary research activity, continue to pose formidable scientific challenges. A major experimental obstacle has been to distinguish universal phenomena from materials- or technique-dependent ones. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measures momentum-dependent single-particle electronic excitations and has been invaluable in the endeavor to determine the anisotropic momentum-space properties of the cuprates. HgBa$_2$…
Various forms of spin and charge ordering have been identified in a wide range of cuprate superconducting materials, but whether these behaviors are ubiquitous phenomena is not established. In this work we focus on one of the simplest compounds, HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), a superconductor with a high transition temperature, 97 K, having only a single layer and tetragonal structure, in contrast to one of the most extensively studied materials, YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+y}$ (Y123). Using nuclear magnetic resonance we have discovered a coherent spatial modulation of both spin and charge that is…
We present the first angle-resolved photoemission measurement on the single-layer Hg-based cuprate, HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201). A quasi-particle peak in the spectrum and a kink in the band dispersion around the diagonal of the Brillouin zone are observed, whereas no structure is detected near the Brillouin zone boundary. To search for a material-dependent trend among hole-doped cuprates, including Hg1201, we use a tight-binding model to fit their Fermi surfaces. We find a positive correlation between the $T_{c,\mathrm{max}}$ and $t'/t$, consistent with theoretical predictions.
Antiferromagnetic correlations have been argued to be the cause of the d-wave superconductivity and the pseudogap phenomena exhibited by the cuprates. Although the antiferromagnetic response in the pseudogap state has been reported for a number of compounds, there exists no information for structurally simple HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Here we report neutron scattering results for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ $\sim$ 71 K, pseudogap temperature T* $\sim$ 305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of t…
The ab-plane optical spectra of one underdoped and one nearly optimally doped single crystal of HgBa_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{8+delta} were investigated in the frequency range from 40 to 40,000 cm^-1. The frequency dependent scattering rate was obtained by Kramers Kronig analysis of the reflectance. Both crystals have a scattering rate gap of about 1000 cm^-1 which is much larger than the 700 cm^-1 gap seen in optical studies of several cuprates with maximum Tc around 93 K. There appears to be a universal scaling between scattering rate gap and maximum Tc for the cuprate superconductors.
We present an inelastic neutron scattering study of the structurally simple single-layer compound HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ close to optimal doping ($T_c \approx 96$ K). A well-defined antiferromagnetic resonance with energy $ω_r = 56$ meV ($\approx 6.8 k_BT_c$) is observed below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. The resonance mode is energy-resolution limited and exhibits an intrinsic momentum width of about $0.2 \mathrm{\mathring{A}^{-1}}$, consistent with prior work on several other cuprates. However, the unusually large value of the mode energy implies a non-universal relationshi…
We use neutron scattering to study magnetic excitations near the antiferromagnetic wave vector in the underdoped single-layer cuprate HgBa2CuO4+δ (superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 88 K, pseudogap temperature T* ~ 220 K). The response is distinctly enhanced below T* and exhibits a Y-shaped dispersion in the pseudogap state, whereas the superconducting state features an X-shaped (hourglass) dispersion and a further resonance-like enhancement. A large spin gap of about 40 meV is observed in both states. This phenomenology is reminiscent of that exhibited by bilayer cuprates. The resona…
Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO$_2$ planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ and we report the first quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. Th…
The model for the cuprates based on the modified electron-phonon pairing mechanism has been tested. For this purpose, the superconductors with high value of the critical temperature have been taken into consideration. In particular: ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y}}$, ${\rm HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+y}}$, ${\rm HgBa_{2}Cu_{1-x}Zn_{x}O_{4+y}}$, and ${\rm HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+y}}$. It has been shown that the dependence of the ratio $R_{1}\equiv 2Δ_{tot}^{(0)}/k_{B}T_{C}$ on the doping ($p$) can be properly predicted in the framework of the presented theory; the symbol $Δ_{tot}^{(0)}$ denotes the energy gap a…
The specific heat $C$ of the single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ was measured in an underdoped crystal with $T_{\rm c} = 72$ K at temperatures down to $2$ K in magnetic fields up to $35$ T, a field large enough to suppress superconductivity at that doping ($p \simeq 0.09$). In the normal state at $H = 35$ T, a residual linear term of magnitude $γ= 12 \pm 2$ mJ/K$^2$mol is observed in $C/T$ as $T \to 0$, a direct measure of the electronic density of states. This high value of $γ$ has two major implications. First, it is significantly larger than the value measured in overd…
Thermal Hall conductivity in the strongest cuprate superconductor: Estimate of the mean free path in the trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8 + δ}$
Charge density-wave order has been observed in cuprate superconductors whose crystal structure breaks the square symmetry of the CuO2 planes, such as orthorhombic YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO), but not so far in cuprates that preserve that symmetry, such as tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201). We have measured the Hall (R_H), Seebeck (S), and Nernst coefficients of underdoped Hg1201 in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The high-field R_H(T) and S(T) are found to drop with decreasing temperature and become negative, as also observed in YBCO at comparable doping. In YBCO, the negative R…

We report the successful synthesis of single-crystalline cuprate superconductors HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{8+δ}$. These compounds are well-known for their high optimal superconducting critical temperatures of $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 128 K and 134 K at ambient pressure, respectively, and for their challenging synthesis. Using a conventional quartz-tube encapsulation method and a two-layer encapsulation method that utilizes custom-built high-pressure furnaces, we are able to grow single crystals with linear dimensions up to several millimeters parallel to the CuO$_…
Using resonant X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we study charge correlations and lattice dynamics in two model cuprates, HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+δ}$. We observe a maximum of the characteristic charge order temperature around the same hole concentration ($p \approx 0.09$) in both compounds, and concomitant pronounced anomalies in the lattice dynamics that involve the motion of atoms in and/or adjacent to the CuO$_2$ layers. These anomalies are already present at room temperature, and therefore precede the formation of the static charge correlations, and we a…
Generally strong charge and magnetic inhomogeneities are observed in NQR/NMR experiments on underdoped cuprates. It is not the case for the underdoped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$, the most symmetric and highest T$_c$ single layer cuprate, whose magnetic inhomogeneity is strongly suppressed. Also neutron scattering experiments reveal a unique pair of weakly dispersive magnetic modes in this material. We propose that these special properties stem from the symmetric positioning of the O-dopants between adjacent CuO$_2$ layers that lead to a strong superexchange interaction between a pair of hole spins. I…
A brief review of microscopic studies of high-Tc superconductors HgBa2CuO4+d and HgBa2CaCu2O6+d is presented. The topics concerned are the pseudo spin-gap, the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point, and the mechanism of the high Tc via NMR. The crystal structure with the flat CuO2 plane, two-dimensional electrical resistivity, Cu NQR, NMR experimental results are discussed.
The strain derivatives of $T_c$ along the $a$ and $c$ axes have been determined for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), the simplest monolayer cuprate with the highest $T_c$ of all monolayer cuprates ($T_c$ = 97 K at optimal doping). The underdoped compound with the initial $T_c$ of 65 K has been studied as a function of pressure up to 20 GPa by magnetic susceptibility and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The observed linear increase in $T_c$ with pressure is the same as previously been found for the optimally-doped compound. The above results have enabled the investigation of the origins of the significant…
We report an original procedure for the elaboration of very high quality single crystals of superconducting HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ mercury cuprates. These single crystals are unique with very high quality surface paving the way for spectroscopic, transport and thermodynamic probes in order to understand the hole-doped cuprate phase diagram. The superconductivity transition width of about 2 K indicates they are homogeneous. Annealing allows to optimize Tc up to Tc$^{max}$ = 133 K. We show for the first time that with adequate heat treatment, Hg-1223 can be largely under-doped and its doping level cont…
HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) has been shown to be a model cuprate for scattering, optical, and transport experiments, but angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data are still lacking owing to the absence of a charge-neutral cleavage plane. We report on progress in achieving the experimental conditions for which quasiparticles can be observed in the near-nodal region of the Fermi surface. The d-wave superconducting gap is measured and found to have a maximum of 39 meV. At low temperature, a kink is detected in the nodal dispersion at approximately 51 meV below the Fermi level, an …
The charge-density-wave (CDW) instability in the underdoped, pseudogap part of the cuprate phase diagram has been a major recent research focus, yet measurements of dynamic, energy-resolved CDW correlations are still in their infancy. We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the underdoped cuprate superconductor HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c = 70$ K). At $T=250$ K, above the CDW order temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW} \approx 200$ K, we observe significant dynamic CDW correlations at about 40 meV. This energy scale is comparable to both the superconducting gap an…
Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.

We have investigated the doping dependencies of the basal areas in single-layer high-T_c cuprates La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and HgBa_2CuO_x, as well as in two-layer Y_{1-y}Ca_yBa_2Cu_3O_x and HgBa_2CaCu_2O_x. The basal areas not only tend to shrink on hole doping, as expected from single electron quantum chemistry, but exhibit also a "bulge'' around optimum doping. We attribute the "bulge'' to the effects of the strongly correlated quantum liquid on the CuO_2 lattice, rendering it nearly incompressible around optimum doping, but highly compressible in the weakly overdoped regime. Inhomogenous doping c…
The simple structure of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) is ideal among cuprates for study of the pseudogap phase as a broken symmetry state. We have performed $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on an underdoped Hg1201 crystal with transition temperature of 74 K to look for circulating orbital currents proposed theoretically and inferred from neutron scattering. The narrow spectra preclude static local fields in the pseudogap phase at the apical site, suggesting that the moments observed with neutrons are fluctuating. The NMR frequency shifts are consistent with a dipolar field from the Cu$…
In order to explore the reason why the single-layered cuprates, La$_{2-x}$(Sr/Ba)$_x$CuO$_4$ ($T_c\simeq$ 40K) and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c\simeq$ 90K), have such a significant difference in $T_c$, we study a two-orbital model that incorporates the $d_{z^2}$ orbital on top of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital. It is found, with the fluctuation exchange approximation, that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital contribution to the Fermi surface, which is stronger in the La system, works against d-wave superconductivity, thereby dominating over the effect of the Fermi surface shape. The result resolves the long-standin…
In type-II superconductors exposed to magnetic fields between upper and lower critical values, $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$, penetrating magnetic flux forms a lattice of vortices whose motion can induce dissipation. Consequently, the magnetization $M$ of superconductors is typically progressively weakened with increasing magnetic field $B \propto n_v$ (for vortex density $n_v$). However, some materials exhibit a non-monotonic $M(B)$, presenting a maximum in $M$ at what is known as the second magnetization peak. This phenomenon appears in most classes of superconductors, including low $T_c$ materials,…
We introduce a mechanism in which coupling between fluctuating spin magnetic dipole moments and polar optical phonons leads to a non-zero ferroic ordering of quasi-static magnetoelectric multipoles. Using first-principles calculations within the LSDA$+U$ method of density functional theory, we calculate the magnitude of the effect for the prototypical cuprate superconductor, HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$. We show that our proposed mechanism is consistent, to our knowledge, with all experimental data for the onset of the pseudo-gap phase and therefore propose the quasi-static magnetoelectric multipole as a p…
We report pure zero field nuclear magnetic resonance (NQR) measurements on the optimally doped three layer high-$ T_{c} $-compounds HgBaCaCuO and HgBaCaCuO(F) with $T_c$ 134 K. Above $ T_{c}$ two Cu NQR line pairs are observed in the spectra corresponding to the two inequivalent Cu lattice sites. Below $ T_{c}$ the Cu NQR spectra show additional lines leading to the extreme broadened Cu NQR spectra at 4.2 K well known for the HgBaCaCuO compounds. The spin-lattice relaxation curves follow a triple exponential function with coefficients depend onto the saturation time (number of saturation pulse…

Measurements of thermal conductivity versus temperature over a broad range of doping in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and HgBa$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+2+δ}$ ($n$=1,2,3) suggest that small domains of localized holes develop for hole concentrations near $p$=1/8. The data imply a mechanism for localization that is intrinsic to the CuO$_2$-planes and is enhanced via pinning associated with oxygen-vacancy clusters.
We have studied the doping dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density, ρ^s(0), of two monolayer high-Tc superconductors, HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ} and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, using the low frequency ac-susceptibility and the muon spin relaxation techniques. For both superconductors, ρ^s(0) increases rapidly with doping in the under- and optimally doped regime and becomes nearly doping independent above a critical doping, p_c = 0.20.
Recently a phonon exchange d - wave pairing mechanism in cuprates was proposed. The phonons are the lateral apical oxygen atoms vibrations. They generate the attractive pairing potential peaked at X point of the Brillouin zone, V (k) = exp [-2kda], where da is distance from the CuO planes. The model explains a rather paradoxical well known negative correlation of the optimal doping critical temperature Tcmax with da and increase of Tcmax with pressure. However the large disparities in Tcmax, especially in one - layer cuprate superconductors, from 39K for La2-xSrxCuO4, to 95K for HgBa2CuO4+x, c…
The superconducting phase of the $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{Ca}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) cuprates has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy under hydrostatic pressure. Our analysis reveals that the increase of $T_c$ with pressure is slower in Hg-1223 cuprate compared to the Hg-1201 due to a charge carrier concentration imbalance (accentuated by pressure) between the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers of Hg-1223. We find that the energy variation under pressure of the apical oxygen mode from which the charge carriers are transferred to the …
The compound HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+Δ}$ (Hg1201) exhibits a simple tetragonal crystal structure and the highest superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) among all single Cu-O layer cuprates, with T$_c$ = 97 K (onset) at optimal doping. Due to a lack of sizable single crystals, experimental work on this very attractive system has been significantly limited. Thanks to a recent breakthrough in crystal growth, such crystals have now become available. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to identify suitable heat treatment conditions to systematically and uniformly tune the hole concentration of…
To explore material dependence of cuprate superconductors, we evaluate effective Coulomb interactions for Hg1201 and Tl1201, where Tl1201 having a nearly half value of T_c of Hg1201 even at the optimal oxygen concentration. Although structures are similar for these superconductors, there is an apparent difference in the occupied levels below EF. The characteristic difference in the band structure is correlated with oxygen contents in the buffer layer. By using constrained Random Phase Approximation, effective screened Coulomb interactions are estimated for HgBa_2CuO_4 and TlBa_2CuO_5. The resu…
Ab initio low-energy effective Hamiltonians of two typical high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, whose mother compounds are La$_2$CuO$_4$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$, are derived by utilizing the multi-scale ab initio scheme for correlated electrons (MACE). The effective Hamiltonians obtained in the present study serve as platforms of future studies to accurately solve the low-energy effective Hamiltonians beyond the density functional theory. It allows further study on the superconducting mechanism from the first principles and quantitative basis without adjustable parameters not only for th…
We studied local magnetic properties of triple-CuO$_2$-layer superconductors HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ with rich $^{63}$Cu isotope (underdoped $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 124 K and optimally doped $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 134 K) by $^{63}$Cu NMR spin-echo techniques. The temperature dependences of the $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{63}$(1/$T_1$) and the spin Knight shift $^{63}K_\mathrm{spin}$ of the inner plane Cu(1) site were nearly the same as those of the outer plane Cu(2) site in the normal states. The pseudogap temperature $T^*$ defined as the maximum temperature of $^{63}$(1/$T_1T$)…
We studied the hole concentration dependences of 63Cu Knight shifts in single-CuO2-layer high-Tc cuprate superconductors HgBa2CuO4+d and double-layer HgBa2CaCu2O6+d. We found that the spin Knight shift at room temperature as a function of the hole concentration in the single-layer superconductor is different from that in the double-layer superconductor. Two type relations between the spin Knight shift and the hole doping level serve to estimate the individual hole concentrations of the non-equivalent CuO2 planes in a unit cell.
Despite immense efforts, the cuprate Fermi surface (FS) has been unambiguously determined in only two distinct, low-temperature regions of the phase diagram: a large hole-like FS at high doping, and a small electron-like pocket associated with charge-density-wave driven FS reconstruction at moderate doping. Moreover, there exists incomplete understanding of the reconstructed state, which is stabilized by high magnetic fields, and its connection with the normal state that consists of arc-like remnants of the large underlying FS. Part of the problem is that compound-specific idiosyncrasies, such…
We present an investigation of the planar direct-current (dc) paraconductivity of the model cuprate material HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ in the underdoped part of the phase diagram. The simple quadratic temperature-dependence of the Fermi-liquid normal-state resistivity enables us to extract the paraconductivity above the macroscopic $T_c$ with great accuracy. The paraconductivity exhibits unusual exponential temperature dependence, with a characteristic temperature scale that is distinct from $T_c$. In the entire temperature range where it is discernable, the paraconductivity is quantitatively explai…
In- and out-of-plane optical spectra and specific heat measurements for the single layer cuprate superconductor Hg-1201 at optimal doping (Tc = 97 K) are presented. Both the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density agree well with a recently proposed scaling relation rho_{s}=sigma_{dc}T_{c}. It is shown that there is a superconductivity induced increase of the in-plane low frequency spectral weight which follows the trend found in underdoped and optimally doped Bi-2212 and optimally doped Bi-2223. We observe an increase of optical spectral weight which corresponds to a change in kinetic en…
We present results for magnetic excitations in doped copper oxides using the random phase approximation and itinerant electrons. In the [1,0] direction the observed excitations resemble dispersive quasi-particles both in the normal and superconducting state similar as in recent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments. In the [1,1] direction the excitations form, except for the critical region near the antiferromagnetic wave vector ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$, only very broad continua. Using the obtained spin propagators we calculate electron self-energies and their effects on electronic Ram…
The metallic state of the underdoped high-Tc cuprates has remained an enigma: How may seemingly disconnected Fermi surface segments, observed in zero magnetic field as a result of the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap), possess conventional quasiparticle properties? How do the small Fermi-surface pockets evidenced by the observation of quantum oscillations (QO) emerge as superconductivity is suppressed in high magnetic fields? Such QO, discovered in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Y123) and YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124), signify the existence of a conventional Fermi surface (FS). However, due to the complexi…
We report in-plane resistivity ($ρ$) and transverse magnetoresistance (MR) measurements in underdoped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201). Contrary to the longstanding view that Kohler's rule is strongly violated in underdoped cuprates, we find that it is in fact satisfied in the pseudogap phase of Hg1201. The transverse MR shows a quadratic field dependence, $δρ/ρ_o=a H^{2}$, with $a(T)\propto T^{-4}$. In combination with the observed $ρ\propto T^2$ dependence, this is consistent with a single Fermi-liquid quasiparticle scattering rate. We show that this behavior is universal, yet typically masked i…
Conventional superconductors are characterized by a single energy scale, the superconducting gap, which is proportional to the critical temperature Tc . In hole-doped high-Tc copper oxide superconductors, previous experiments have established the existence of two distinct energy scales for doping levels below the optimal one. The origin and significance of these two scales are largely unexplained, although they have often been viewed as evidence for two gaps, possibly of distinct physical origins. By measuring the temperature dependence of the electronic Raman response of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2…

We report resonant electronic Raman scattering in optimally doped single layer HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and trilayer HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) single crystals. Analysis of the $B_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels in the superconducting state of Hg-1201 advocates for a gap having d-wave symmetry. In addition a resonant study $B_{1g}$ pair-breaking peak and the $A_{1g}$ peak suggests that the $A_{1g}$ peak is not directly related to the d-wave superconducting gap amplitude. Comparison with trilayer Hg-1223 demonstrates the universal behavior of this two energy scales in optimally do…
There exists increasing evidence that the phase diagram of the high-transition temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors is controlled by a quantum critical point. One distinct theoretical proposal is that, with decreasing hole-carrier concentration, a transition occurs to an ordered state with two circulating orbital currents per CuO2 square. Below the 'pseudogap' temperature T* (T* > Tc), the theory predicts a discrete order parameter and two weakly-dispersive magnetic excitations in structurally simple compounds that should be measurable by neutron scattering. Indeed, novel magnetic order an…
Upon introducing charge carriers into the copper-oxygen sheets of the enigmatic lamellar cuprates the ground state evolves from an insulator into a superconductor, and eventually into a seemingly conventional metal (a Fermi liquid). Much has remained elusive about the nature of this evolution and about the peculiar metallic state at intermediate hole-carrier concentrations (p). The planar resistivity of this unconventional metal exhibits a linear temperature dependence (ρ$\propto$ T) that is disrupted upon cooling toward the superconducting state by the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap)…
The observation of a reconstructed Fermi surface via quantum oscillations in hole-doped cuprates opened a path towards identifying broken symmetry states in the pseudogap regime. However, such an identification has remained inconclusive due to the multi-frequency quantum oscillation spectra and complications accounting for bilayer effects in most studies. We overcome these impediments with high resolution measurements on the structurally simpler cuprate HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201), which features one CuO2 plane per unit cell. We find only a single oscillatory component with no signatures of magnetic …
Three-types (three-band, two-band and one-band) of effective Hamiltonians for the HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$ and three-band effective Hamiltonian for La$_2$CuO$_4$ are derived beyond the level of the constrained-GW approximation combined with the self-interaction correction (cGW-SIC) derived in Hirayama et al. Phys. Rev. B 98, 134501 (2018) by improving the treatment of the interband Hartree energy. The charge gap and antiferromagnetic ordered moment show good agreement with the experimental results when the present effective Hamiltonian is solved, indicating the importance of the present refinement. The…
Superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from an enigmatic metallic state. There remain profound open questions regarding the universality of observed phenomena and the character of precursor fluctuations above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature (T_c). For single-CuO_2-layer La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) and Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CuO_{6+δ} (Bi2201), some experiments seem to indicate an onset of SC fluctuations at very high temperatures (2-3 times T_c^{max}, the T_c value at optimal hole concentration p), whereas other measurements suggest that fluctuations are confined to the immediate vicinit…
