Recently a phonon exchange d - wave pairing mechanism in cuprates was proposed. The phonons are the lateral apical oxygen atoms vibrations. They generate the attractive pairing potential peaked at X point of the Brillouin zone, V (k) = exp [-2kda], where da is distance from the CuO planes. The model explains a rather paradoxical well known negative correlation of the optimal doping critical temperature Tcmax with da and increase of Tcmax with pressure. However the large disparities in Tcmax, especially in one - layer cuprate superconductors, from 39K for La2-xSrxCuO4, to 95K for HgBa2CuO4+x, cannot be attributed by differencies in da. Other important material parameters include the hopping amplitudes t; t0 and the on site Coulomb repulsion U. It is shown (within weak coupling)that Tcmax is highest for materials close to the topological (Lifshitz) transition from an open to a close Fermi surface. The transition occurss for t0 = -0.19t and rather small values of effective value of U = 2t at optimal doping. Analytic expressions for Tcmax are derived both near criticality and away from it.
A long-standing puzzle is why there is a difference between the optimal doping δ_{optimal}=0.15 for the maximal superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc and the critical doping δ_{critical}=0.19 for the highest superfluid density ρ_s in cuprate superconductors? This puzzle is calling for an explanation. Within the kinetic energy driven SC mechanism, it is shown that except the quasiparticle coherence, ρ_s is dominated by the bare pair gap, while Tc is set by the effective pair gap. By calculation of the ratio of the effective and the bare pair gaps, it is shown that the coupling strength…
The doping and temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By considering the interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap, the some main features of the doping and temperature dependence of the specific-heat, the condensation energy, and the upper critical field are well reproduced. In particular, it is shown that in analogy to the domelike shape of the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, the maximal upper critical field occurs aro…
Almost a decade has passed since the serendipitous discovery of the iron-based high temperature superconductors (FeSCs) in 2008. The question of how much similarity the FeSCs have with the copper oxide high temperature superconductors emerged since the initial discovery of long-range antiferromagnetism in the FeSCs in proximity to superconductivity. Despite the great resemblance in their phase diagrams, there exist important disparities between FeSCs and cuprates that need to be considered in order to paint a full picture of these two families of high temperature superconductors. One of the ke…
Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. To gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, here we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using res…
The large variations of T$_c$ across the cuprate families is one of the major unsolved puzzles in condensed matter physics, and is poorly understood. Although there appears to be a great deal of universality in the cuprates, several orders of magnitude changes in T$_c$ can be achieved through changes in the chemical composition and structure of the unit cell. In this paper we formulate a systematic examination of the variations in electron-phonon coupling to oxygen phonons in the cuprates, incorporating a number of effects arising from several aspects of chemical composition and doping across …
In our recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 137001 (2002)], we proposed that the apical oxygen vacancies act as anisotropic scattering impurities. Within the Born approximation, this leads to a quasi-particle scattering rate that is maximal (zero) in the antinodal (nodal) direction. This unique angular dependence provides a straightforward mechanism for some puzzling experimental results in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) films regarding the superfluid density $ρ_s$ and optical conductivity $σ_1$. In a recent comment by H. U. Ozdemir et al. [arXiv:2206.01301], the importance of the natu…
Superconductivity in cuprate superconductors occurs upon charge-carrier doping Mott insulators, where a central question is what mechanism causes the loss of electrical resistance below the superconducting (SC) transition temperature? In this review, we attempt to summarize the basic idea of the kinetic-energy driven SC mechanism in the description of superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. The mechanism of the kinetic-energy driven superconductivity is purely electronic without phonons, where the charge-carrier pairing interaction arises directly from the kinetic energy by the exchange …
Within the t-t'-J model, the doping dependence of the Meissner effect in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. Following the linear response theory, it is shown that the electromagnetic response consists of two parts, the diamagnetic current and the paramagnetic current, which exactly cancels the diamagnetic term in the normal state, and then the Meissner effect is obtained for all the temperature $T\leq T_{c}$ throughout the superconducting dome. By considering the two-dimensional geometry of cuprate superconductors within the specula…
The study of the electromagnetic response in cuprate superconductors plays a crucial role in the understanding of the essential physics of these materials. Here the doping dependence of the electromagnetic response in cuprate superconductors is studied within the kinetic-energy driven superconducting mechanism. The kernel of the response function is evaluated based on the linear response approximation for a purely transverse vector potential, and can be broken up into its diamagnetic and paramagnetic parts. In particular, this paramagnetic part exactly cancels the corresponding diamagnetic par…
We investigate the properties of cuprate superconductors subject to applied current, using modified Gutzwiller projected d-wave BCS states. The parent states include quasiparticle and quasihole pockets, of variationally determined size, generated by the current. We identify two different mechanisms for the destruction of superconductivity at the critical current: at high hole doping (x>0.15) the pockets grow and completely destroy the gap, in a BCS-like mechanism; in the underdoped regime, the superfluid stiffness vanishes at a maximal phase twist with pairing still intact. This result is indi…
Many issues concerning the origin of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) are still under debate. For example, how the magnetic ordering varies with doping and its relationship with the superconducting temperature; and why the maximal Tc always occurs near the quantum critical point. In this paper, taking hole-doped La2CuO4 as a classical example, we employ the first-principles band structure and total energy calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to explore how the symmetry-breaking magnetic ground state evolves with hole doping and the origin of a dome-shaped superconductivity region i…
When investigating low-frequency (0.1 Hz) oscillations of miltiphase high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTSC) Bi1,7Pb0,3Sr2Ca(n-1)CunOy (n=2-30), a wide attenuation peak with a maximal at T=200K detected. This peak was particularly pronounced in field cooling (FC) experiments, i.e. after abrupt cooling of the sample in the external magnetic field at the temperature T less Tc with subsequent slow warming up to room temperature with invariance of applied field. The attenuation peak height depended on the preliminary orientation (before cooling) of the samples in the measured permanent mag…
We use a renormalized mean field theory to investigate the superconducting properties of underdoped cuprates embedded with overdoped or metallic regions that carry excess dopants. The overdoped regions are considered, within two different models, first as stripes of mesoscopic size larger than the coherence length and then as point impurities. In the former case we compute the temperature dependent superfluid stiffness by solving Bogoliubov de Gennes equations within the slave boson mean field theory. We average over stripes of different orientations to obtain an isotropic result. To compute t…
From analysis of the in-plane resistivity $ρ_{ab}(T)$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, we show that normal state transport in overdoped cuprates can be delineated into two regimes in which the electrical resistivity varies approximately linearly with temperature. In the low temperature limit, the $T$-linear resistivity extends over a very wide doping range, in marked contrast to expectations from conventional quantum critical scenarios. The coefficient of this $T$-linear resistivity scales with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, implying that the interaction causing this anomalous sc…
The $d$-$wave$ superconductivity is analyzed within the three-band $d$-$p$ model with the use of the diagrammatic expansion of the Guztwiller wave function method (DE-GWF). The determined stability regime of the superconducting state appears in the range of hole doping $δ\lesssim 0.35$, with the optimal doping close to $δ\approx 0.19$. The pairing amplitudes between the $d$-orbitals due to copper and $p_x/p_y$ orbitals due to oxygen are analyzed together with the hybrid $d$-$p$ pairing. The $d$-$d$ pairing between the nearest neighboring atomic sites leads to the dominant contribution to the S…
We present here a microscopic two-band model based on the structure of energetic levels of holes in $\mathrm{CuO}_{2}$ conducting layers of cuprates. We prove that two energetically near-lying interacting bands can explain the electron-hole asymmetry. Indeed, we rigorously analyze the phase diagram of the model and show that the critical temperatures for fermion densities below half-filling can manifest a very different behavior as compared to the case of densities above half-filling. This fact results from the inter-band interaction and intra-band Coulomb repulsion in interplay with thermal f…

The cuprates and iron-based high-temperature superconductors share many common features: layered strongly anisotropic crystal structure, strong electronic correlations, interplay between different types of electronic ordering, the intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity due to doping. The understanding of complex interplay between these factors is crucial for a directed search of new high-temperature superconductors. Here we show the appearance of inhomogeneous gossamer superconductivity in bulk FeSe compound at ambient pressure and at temperature 5 times higher than its zero-resistance $T_c$. This di…
Both FeSe and cuprate superconductors are quasi 2D materials with high transition temperatures and local fermion pairs. Motivated by such systems, we investigate real space pairing of fermions in an anisotropic lattice model with intersite attraction, V, and strong local Coulomb repulsion, U, leading to a determination of the optimal conditions for superconductivity from Bose-Einstein condensation. Our aim is to gain insight as to why high temperature superconductors tend to be quasi 2D. We make both analytically and numerically exact solutions for two body local pairing applicable to intermed…
