A brief review of microscopic studies of high-Tc superconductors HgBa2CuO4+d and HgBa2CaCu2O6+d is presented. The topics concerned are the pseudo spin-gap, the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point, and the mechanism of the high Tc via NMR. The crystal structure with the flat CuO2 plane, two-dimensional electrical resistivity, Cu NQR, NMR experimental results are discussed.
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, we study the interplay between superconductivity and the nodal and antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherences in cuprate superconductors, and find the s-wave superconducting transition temperature is heavily suppressed by the antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherence, while the d-wave superconducting transition temperature is enhanced, therefore the antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherence plays a more crucial role in superconductivity of cuprate superconductors.
We report neutron scattering studies on single crystals of the electron-doped (n-type) superconducting cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) with Tc = 18 K and 25 K. Unlike the hole-doped (p-type) superconducting cuprates where incommensurate magnetic fluctuations commonly exist, the n-type cuprate shows commensurate magnetic fluctuations at the tetragonal (1/2 1/2 0) reciprocal points both in the superconducting and in the normal state. A spin gap opens up when the n-type cuprate becomes superconducting, as in the optimally doped p-type La2-xSrxCuO4. The gap energy, however, increases gradually up to…
The tunneling spectra of the electron-doped cuprate Pr_2-xCe_xCuO4 as a function of doping and temperature is reported. We find that the superconducting gap, delta, shows a BCS-like temperature dependence even for extremely low carrier concentrations (studied here for the first time). Moreover, delta follows the doping dependence of Tc, in strong contrast with tunneling studies of hole-doped cuprates. From our results we conclude that there is a single superconducting energy scale in the electron-doped cuprates.
The nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap is a hallmark of the cuprate high T$_c$ superconductors. Surprisingly recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of deeply underdoped cuprates revealed a nodeless energy gap which is adhered to the Fermi surface. Importantly this phenomenon is observed for compounds across several different cuprate families. In this letter we propose an exciting possibility, namely the fully gapped state is a topological superconductor.
A new electron-doped superconductor Li_x_Sr_2_CuO_2_Br_2_ with x = 0.15 has successfully been synthesized by an electrochemical Li-intercalation technique. The magnetic susceptibility shows superconductivity of bulk with the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 8 K. This compound is the first electron-doped superconducting cuprate with the K_2_NiF_4_ structure.

Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the interplay between the single particle coherence and superconducting instability in doped cuprates is studied. The superconducting transition temperature increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal doping, then decreases in the overdoped regime, however, the values of this superconducting transition temperature in the whole superconducting range are suppressed to low temperature due to the single particle coherence. Within this superconducting mechanism, we calculate the dynamical…
The electronic structure of cuprate superconductors is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism in the presence of the out-of-plane impurities. With increasing the impurity concentration, although both superconducting coherence peaks around nodal and antinodal regions are suppressed, the position of the leading-edge mid-point of the electron spectrum around the nodal region remains at the same position, while it is shifted towards higher binding energies around the antinodal region, this leads to a strong deviation from the monotonic d-wave superconducting gap in the …
We calculate the quasiparticle scattering rate in the superconducting state of the overdoped cuprates, in the context of the Eliashberg formalism for a Fermi liquid with strong van Hove singularities close to the chemical potential. For a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap, we demonstrate analytically that the scattering rate is linear in the maximum of temperature or energy, but with different intercepts and momentum dependence. We discuss our results in view of angle-resolved photoemission experiments. We also discuss the case of a s-wave gap.
Phenomenological models for the antiferromagnetic (AF) vs. d-wave superconductivity competition in cuprates are studied using conventional Monte Carlo techniques. The analysis suggests that cuprates may show a variety of different behaviors in the very underdoped regime: local coexistence or first-order transitions among the competing orders, stripes, or glassy states with nanoscale superconducting (SC) puddles. The transition from AF to SC does not seem universal. In particular, the glassy state leads to the possibility of "colossal'' effects in some cuprates, analog of those in manganites. U…
In the framework of the effective low-energy model for High-$T_c$ cuprates with account for three-centers interaction terms and spin fluctuations the properties of normal and superconducting phases of p- and n-type cuprates are investigated. Microscopic model parameters were obtained from ARPES data on undoped compounds. Obtained evolution of the chemical potential with doping, Fermi Surface at optimal doping, and $T_c(x)$ phase diagram for n-type cuprates are in remarkably good agreement with the experiment. It is shown that the spin-exciton mechanism due to singlet-triplet hybridization take…
One of the key issues in unraveling the mystery of high Tc superconductivity in the cuprates is to understand the normal state outside the superconducting dome. Here we perform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a heavily overdoped, non-superconducting (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6+x cuprate. Spectroscopic imaging reveals dispersive quasiparticle interferences and the Fourier transforms uncover the evolution of momentum space topology. More interestingly, we observe nanoscale patches of static charge order with sqrt(2)*sqrt(2) periodicity. Both the dispersive quasiparticle interf…
The strong electron correlation in the cuprates can lead to an enhanced effective mass for both bosonic and fermionic quasiparticles. Where this correlation is characterized by a length that is inversely proportional to the effective temperature, the thermal wavelength for the bosonic quasiparticles becomes essentially independent of temperature. Applying this concept to a preformed pair model, such as the (Cu)13 cluster model, gives Tc vs dopant curves and superconducting gaps in good agreement with experiment. In addition, a correlation-enhanced effective mass provides a natural explanation …
Irrespective of the class they belong to, all the hole doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors show an anti-correlation between the superconducting transition temperature and the characteristic pseudogap energy in the underdoped region. The doping dependent pseudogap in the quasiparticle spectral density is believed to remove low-energy electronic states and thereby reduce the superconducting condensate. Impurities within the CuO2 plane, on the other hand, break Cooper pairs in the unitarity limit and diminish superfluid density. Both pseudogap in pure cuprates and impurity scattering in disorde…
Within the t-t'-J model, the physical properties of doped cuprates in the superconducting-state are discussed based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. We show that the superconducting-state in cuprate superconductors is controlled by both superconducting gap parameter and single particle coherence, and then quantitatively reproduce some main features found in the experiments on cuprate superconductors, including the doping dependence of the superconducting gap parameter and superconducting transition temperature, the electron spectral function at [π,0] point, the charge as…
We develop a theory of normal-metal - superconductor (NS) and superconductor - superconductor (SS) tunnelling in bosonic superconductors with strong attractive correlations taking into account coherence effects in single-particle excitation spectrum and disorder. The theory accounts for the existence of two energy scales, their temperature and doping dependencies, asymmetry and inhomogeneity of tunnelling spectra of underdoped cuprate superconductors.
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
A strategy to enhance d-wave superconducting correlations is proposed based on our numerical study for correlated electron models for high-Tc cuprates. We observe that the pairing is enhanced when the single-electron level around (pi,0) is close to the Fermi level E_F, while the d-wave pairing interaction itself contains elements to disfavor the pairing due to shift of the (pi,0)-level. Angle-resolved photoemission results in the cuprates are consistently explained in the presence of the d-wave pairing interaction. Our proposal is the tuning of the (pi,0)-level under the many-body effects to E…
The one-particle spectral function of a state formed by superconducting (SC) clusters is studied via Monte Carlo techniques. The clusters have similar SC amplitudes but randomly distributed phases. This state is stabilized by the competition with anti-ferromagnetism, after quenched disorder is introduced. Fermi arcs between the critical temperature Tc and the cluster formation temperature scale T* are observed, similarly as in the pseudo-gap state of the cuprates. The arcs originate at metallic regions in between the neighboring clusters that present large SC phase differences.
We suggest a model for electronic structure of cuprate superconductors that makes it possible to describe evolution of this structure with the doping and provides a new explanation for a number of typical features of cuprates, including the pseudogap and the Fermi arcs. According to this model, the unique electronic structure of cuprates is favorable for the formation of two-atomic negative-U centers (NUCs) and realization of a peculiar mechanism of the electron-electron interaction.
Raman and ARPES experiments have demonstrated that in superconducting underdoped cuprates nodal and antinodal regions are characterized by two energy scales instead of the one expected in BCS. The nodal scale decreases with underdoping while the antinodal one increases. Contrary to the behavior expected for an increasing energy scale, the antinodal Raman intensity decreases with decreasing doping. Using the Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) model, we show that these features are a consequence of the non-conventional nature of the superconducting state in which superconductivity and pseudogap correlat…
Motivated by recent neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on cuprate superconductors, we discuss charge-ordered states, in particular with two-dimensional charge modulation patterns, co-existing with superconductivity. We extend previous studies of a large-N mean-field formulation of the t-J model. In addition to bond-centered superconducting stripe states at low doping, we find checkerboard-modulated superconducting states which are favorable in an intermediate doping interval. We also analyze the energy dependence of the Fourier component of the local density…
We report characterization results by energy dispersive x-ray analysis and AC-susceptibility for a statistically relevant number of single layer Bi-cuprate single crystals. We show that the two structurally quite different modifications of the single-layered Bi-cuprate, namely (La,Pb=0.4)-Bi2201 and La-Bi2201, exhibit anomalies in the superconducting transition temperature at certain hole doping, e.g. at 1/8 holes per Cu. These doping values agree well with the 'magic doping fractions' found in the temperature dependent resistance of LSCO by Komiya et al. This new set of findings suggests that…
Within the t-J ladder model, superconductivity with a modified d-wave symmetry in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is investigated based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the spin-liquid ground-state at the half-filling evolves into the superconducting ground-state upon doping. In analogy to the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in the planar cuprate superconductors, the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprates increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the …
Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surface instability are emphasized. A rationalization for the differences in transport properties between the cuprates and nic…
We present in-plane infrared reflectance measurement on two superconducting cuprates with relatively low T$_c$: a nearly optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with T$_c$=33 K and an underdoped La$_{1.89}$Sr$_{0.11}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=30 K. The measurement clearly reveals that the superconducting energy gap is distinct from the pseudogap. They have different energy scales and appear at different temperatures. The results suggest that the pseudogap is not a precursor to the superconducting state. The data also challenge the longstanding viewpoint that the superconductivity within…
Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].
We investigate the effect of isotope substitution on the electronic spectral functions within a model where the charge carriers are coupled to bosonic charge-order (CO) fluctuations centered around some mean frequency ω_0 and with enhanced scattering at wave-vector q_c. It is shown that a mass dependence of ω_0 is not sufficient in order to account, especially at high energies, for the dispersion shifts experimentally observed in an optimally doped superconducting cuprate. We argue that isotope substitution induces a change of the spatial CO correlations which gives good account of the experim…
There is increasing experimental evidence that the superconducting energy gap $Δ_0$ in the underdoped cuprates is independent of doping concentration $x$ while the superfluid density is linear in $x$. We show that under these conditions, thermal excitation of the quasiparticles is very effective in destroying the superconducting state, so that $T_c$ is proportional to $xΔ_0$ and part of the gap structure remains in the normal state. We then estimate $H_{c2}$ and predict it to be proportional to $x^2$. We also discuss to what extent the assumptions that go into the quasiparticle description can…
A model of superconductivity in layered high-temperature superconducting cuprates is proposed, based on the extended saddle point singularities in the electron spectrum, weak screening of the Coulomb interaction and phonon-mediated interaction between electrons plus a small short -range repulsion of Hund's, or spin-fluctuation, origin. This permits to explain the large values of $Tc$, features of the isotope effect on oxygen and copper, the existence of two types of the order parameter, the peak in the inelastic neutron scattering, the positive curvature of the upper critical field, as functio…
We propose a mechanism for high critical temperature (T_c) in the coexistent phase of superconducting- (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) CuO_2 planes in multilayered cuprates. The Josephson coupling between the SC planes separated by an AF insulator (Mott insulator) is calculated perturbatively up to the fourth order in terms of the hopping integral between adjacent CuO_2 planes. It is shown that the AF exchange splitting in the AF plane suppresses the so-called pi-Josephson coupling, and the long-ranged 0-Josephson coupling leads to coexistence with a rather high value of T_c.
We present fermi liquid expressions for the low temperature behavior of the superfluid stiffness, explain why they differ from those suggested recently by Lee and Wen, and discuss their applicability to data on high-$T_c$ superconductors. We find that a consistent description requires a strong, doping dependent anisotropy, which affects states near the zone corners much more strongly than those near the zone diagonals.
A method is proposed to test for the nature of the pseudogap phase in cuprates using the recently developed technique of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We show that the observed quasiparticle interference patterns depend critically on the quasiparticle coherence factors, making it possible to distinguish between the pseudogap dominated by superconducting fluctuations and by various particle-hole condensates.
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the pressure on superconductivity in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is studied. It is shown that the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprate superconductors increases with increasing pressure in the underpressure regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal pressure, then decreases in the overpressure regime. This domed shape of the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature is similar to that of the pressure dependence of the longitudinal part of the superconducting g…
During the last decade, translational and rotational symmetry-breaking phases -- density wave order and electronic nematicity -- have been established as generic and distinct features of many correlated electron systems, including pnictide and cuprate superconductors. However, in cuprates, the relationship between these electronic symmetry-breaking phases and the enigmatic pseudogap phase remains unclear. Here, we employ resonant x-ray scattering in a cuprate high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (Nd-LSCO) to navigate the cuprate phase diagram, probing the rel…
The magnetic excitations in the superconducting electron-doped cuprates are studied in the framework of spin-density-wave description. The superconducting resonance is a natural product of the superconductivity due to the opening of d-wave gap. Its resonance energy exhibits well linear scaling with superconducting gap as $E_{res}/2Δ\sim 0.6$, quantitatively consisting with the experimental discovery. This ratio is insensitive to the selected parameters, manifesting its universality. Another lower-energy peak below resonance energy is predicted when the hole pocket emerges due to suppression of…
We use neutron scattering to study magnetic excitations near the antiferromagnetic wave vector in the underdoped single-layer cuprate HgBa2CuO4+δ (superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 88 K, pseudogap temperature T* ~ 220 K). The response is distinctly enhanced below T* and exhibits a Y-shaped dispersion in the pseudogap state, whereas the superconducting state features an X-shaped (hourglass) dispersion and a further resonance-like enhancement. A large spin gap of about 40 meV is observed in both states. This phenomenology is reminiscent of that exhibited by bilayer cuprates. The resona…
For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, sugges…
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study is reported on a high quality optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta high Tc superconductor. In the antinodal region with maximal d-wave gap, the symbolic superconducting coherence peak, which has been widely observed in multi-CuO2-layer cuprate superconductors, is unambiguously observed in a single layer system. The associated peak-dip separation is just about 19 meV, which is much smaller than its counterparts in multi-layered compounds, but correlates with the energy scales of spin excitations in single layer cuprates.
The letter deals with the spin-freezing process observed by means of NMR-NQR relaxation or by muon spin rotation in underdoped cuprate superconductors. This phenomenon, sometimes referred as coexistence of antiferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters, is generally thought to result from randomly distributed magnetic moments related to charge inhomogeneities (possibly stripes) which exhibit slowing down of their fluctuations on cooling below T$_c$ . Instead, we describe the experimental findings as due to fluctuating, vortex-antivortex, orbital currents state coexisting with d-wave su…
One of the most intriguing aspects of cuprates is a large pseudogap coexisting with a high superconducting transition temperature. Here, we study pairing in the cuprates from electron-electron interactions by constructing the pair vertex using spectral functions derived from angle resolved photoemission data for a near optimal doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ sample that has a pronounced pseudogap. Assuming that that the pseudogap is {\it not} due to pairing, we find that the superconducting instability is strongly suppressed, in stark contrast to what is actually observed. Using an analyti…
We study the pseudogap present in cuprate and organic superconductors. We use the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA), treating a cluster embedded in a bath. As the Coulomb interaction is increased, cluster-bath Kondo states are destroyed and bound cluster states formed. We show that this leads to a pseudogap. Due to weaker coupling to the bath for the anti-nodal point, this happens first for this point, explaining the k-dependence of the pseudogap. The pseudogap can be understood in terms of preformed d-wave pairs, but it does not prove the existence of such pairs.
The opening of the pseudogap in underdoped cuprates breaks up the Fermi surface, which may lead to a breakup of the d-wave order parameter into two subband amplitudes and a low energy Leggett mode due to phase fluctuations between them. This causes a large increase in the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations with an overdamped Leggett mode. Almost resonant scattering of inter-subband phonons to a state with a pair of Leggett modes causes anomalously strong damping. In the ordered state, the Leggett mode develops a finite energy, suppressing the anomalous phonon damping but leading…
The nature of the effective interaction responsible for pairing in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates remains unsettled. This question has been studied extensively using the simplified single-band Hubbard model, which does not explicitly consider the orbital degrees of freedom of the relevant CuO$_2$ planes. Here, we use a dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation to study the orbital structure of the pairing interaction in the three-band Hubbard model, which treats the orbital degrees of freedom explicitly. We find that the interaction predominately acts between neighboring…
In the course of seeking the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity in cuprate high temperature superconductors, the pseudogap phase\textemdash the very abnormal 'normal' state on the hole-doped side\textemdash has proven to be as big of a quandary as superconductivity itself. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool for assessing the momentum-dependent phenomenology of the pseudogap, and recent technological developments have permitted a more detailed understanding. This report reviews recent progress in understanding the relationship between superconductivity …
Electron-boson spectral density functions (EBSDFs) can be obtained from measured spectra using various spectroscopic techniques, including optical spectroscopy. EBSDFs, known as glue functions, have a magnetic origin. Here, we investigated EBSDFs obtained from the measured optical spectra of hole-doped cuprates with wide doping levels, from underdoped to overdoped cuprates. The average frequency of an EBSDF provides the timescale for the spin fluctuations to form Cooper pairs. This timescale is directly associated with retarded interactions between electrons. Using this timescale and Fermi vel…
Recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on cuprate superconductors have revealed remarkable spatial inhomogeneities in the single-particle energy gap. Using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, we study the zero temperature superconducting properties of a single-band Hubbard model with a spatial modulation of the electron density. We find that the inhomogeneity in the electronic structure results in a substantial spatial variation in the superconducting order parameter and single-particle energy gap, reminiscent of the experimental results. In particular, we find that the order para…
We calculate the Raman response contribution due to collective modes, finding a strong dependence on the photon polarizations and on the characteristic wavevectors of the modes. We compare our results with recent Raman spectroscopy experiments in underdoped cuprates, $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ and $(Y_{1.97}Ca_{0.3})Ba_2CuO_{6.05}$, where anomalous low-energy peaks are observed, which soften upon lowering the temperature. We show that the specific dependence on doping and on photon polarizations of these peaks is only compatible with charge collective excitations at finite wavelength.
We measure the magnetic susceptibility nearby Li spinless impurities in the superconducting phase of the high Tc cuprate YBaCuO. The induced moment which was found to exist above Tc persists below Tc. In the underdoped regime, it retains its Curie law below Tc. In contrast, near optimal doping, the large Kondo screening observed above Tc (T_K=135 K) is strongly reduced below Tc as expected theoretically when the superconducting gap develops. This moment still extends essentially on its 4 near neighbour Cu, showing the persistence of AF correlations in the superconducting state. A direct compar…
We present a phenomenological Green's function to characterize the superconducting and pseudogap phases of the cuprates based on a microscopic theory of doped Mott insulators. In this framework, the "Fermi arc" and "kink" phenomena observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in the pseudogap phase can be systematically explained as a function of doping, which is further connected to the two-gap feature in the superconducting phase with dichotomy between the nodal and antinodal physics. We demonstrate that a phase-string-induced fractionalization plays the key role…
The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: noda…
The metal-insulator crossover of the in-plane resistivity upon temperature decrease, recently observed in several classes of cuprate superconductors, when a strong magnetic field suppresses the superconductivity, is explained using the $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge field theory. The origin of this crossover is the same as that for a similar phenomenon observed in heavily underdoped cuprates without magnetic field. It is due to the interplay between the diffusive motion of the charge carriers and the ``peculiar'' localization effect due to short-range antiferromagnetic order. We also ca…
We calculate scattering interference patterns for various electronic states proposed for the pseudogap regime of the cuprate superconductors. The scattering interference models all produce patterns whose wavelength changes as a function of energy, in contradiction to the energy-independent wavelength seen by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in the pseudogap state. This suggests that the patterns seen in STM local density of states measurements are not due to scattering interference, but are rather the result of some form of ordering.
I review some of the experimental evidence and theoretical arguments that suggest that pseudogap matter is a new form of matter that coexists with coherent electron matter in the normal state and with superconducting matter below the superconducting transition temperature. I describe work in progress on a phenomenological two-fluid description of the evolution of pseudogap behavior that offers an explanation for the unexpectedly simple scaling behavior for the uniform magnetic susceptibility found in the underdoped cuprates and use this to propose a physical picture of the underdoped cuprates …
Within the t-t'-J model, the charge asymmetry in superconductivity of hole- and electron-doped cuprates is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that superconductivity appears over a narrow range of doping in electron-doped cuprates, and the superconducting transition temperature displays the same kind of the doping controlled behavior that is observed in the hole-doped case. However, the maximum achievable superconducting transition temperature in the optimal doping in electron-doped cuprates is much lower than that of the hole-doped case due to the…
We establish the quasi-one-dimensional Li purple bronze as a photoemission paradigm of Luttinger liquid behavior. We also show that generalized signatures of electron fractionalization are present in the angle resolved photoemission spectra for quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes and certain cuprates. An important component of our analysis for the quasi-two-dimensional systems is the proposal of a ``melted holon'' scenario for the k-independent background that accompanies but does not interact with the peaks that disperse to define the Fermi surface.
Metals interacting via short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are unstable to sign-changing superconductivity at low temperatures. For the cuprates, this leading instability leads to the well known $d-$wave superconducting state. However, there is also a secondary instability to an incommensurate charge density wave, with a predominantly $d-$wave form factor, arising from the same antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Recent experiments in the pseudogap regime of the hole-doped cuprates have found strong evidence for such a charge density wave order and, in particular, the predicted $d-$wave for…
Recently, Kaminski et al. have reported that time reversal symmetry is broken in the pseudogap phase in the high temperature superconducting material Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{2+δ} (Bi-2212). Here we examine the role of translationally invariant broken time reversal states on d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. In particular, we determine the change in the superconducting order parameter structure. We find that the broken time reversal pseudogap state that is consistent with the experiment of Kaminski et al., gives rise to a novel mixed singlet-triplet pairing d+ip phase. This d+ip state is shown to give rise…
Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.
We review the recent measurements of the current-phase relation in cuprate Josephson junctions. Special attention is paid to 45 degree grain boundary junctions and to c-axis junctions between YBCO and Nb. It is shown that the anomalous properties of such junctions which have been found experimentally (large second harmonic of the current phase relation, sign change of the first harmonic as a function of temperature) are qualitatively consistent with the d-wave symmetry of pairing in the cuprates. It is argued that in order to describe the data quantitatively, quantum fluctuations of the order …
