Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].
Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surface instability are emphasized. A rationalization for the differences in transport properties between the cuprates and nic…
We discuss heat transport in hole-doped manganites, nickelates and cuprates for which real-space charge ordering has been observed. We survey the thermal transport response to charge order in the various materials and the associated structural modifications, particularly distortions of the metal-oxygen polyhedra associated with localized charge, that may be a principal source of phonon damping.
Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K, starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and underdoped cuprates.
New dielectric transitions are observed at common temperatures 32K and 245K, in isostructural $La_{2}CuO_{4+x}$ and $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4},$ that are signatures of local lattice (octahedral) instabilities. The present dielectric transitions reveal new aspects of the phase diagram of the perovskite cuprates and nickelates. They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism. These results also indicate that inhomogeneous electronic states, such as charge stripes and oxygen orde…
The low-frequency dielectric response of hole-doped insulators La_{2}Cu_{1-x}Li_{x}O_{4} and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4} shows a large dielectric constant ε^{'} at high temperature and a step-like drop by a factor of 100 at a material-dependent low temperature T_{f}. T_{f} increases with frequency and the dielectric response shows universal scaling in a Cole-Cole plot, suggesting that a charge glass state is realized both in the cuprates and in the nickelates.
The 2019 discovery of high temperature superconductivity in layered nickelate films, Nd$_{1-x}$SrNiO$_2$, has galvanized a community that has been studying nickelates for more than 30 years both as cuprate analogs and in their own right. On the surface, infinite layer nickelates, and their multilayer analogs, should be promising candidates based on our understanding of cuprates: square planar coordination and a parent d9 configuration that places a single hole in a dx2-y2 planar orbital makes nickelates seem poised for superconductivity. But creating crystals and films of sufficient quality of…
The recently discovered infinite-layer nickelates show great promise in helping to disentangle the various cooperative mechanisms responsible for high-temperature superconductivity. However, lack of antiferromagnetic order in the pristine nickelates presents a challenge for connecting the physics of the cuprates and nickelates. Here, by using a quantum many-body Green's function-based approach to treat the electronic and magnetic structures, we unveil the presence of many two- and three-dimensional magnetic stripe instabilities that are shown to persist across the phase diagram of LaNiO$_2$. O…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in doped NdNiO$_2$, we study the magnetic exchange interaction $J$ in layered $d^9$ nickelates from first principles. The mother compounds of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates belong to the charge-transfer regime in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen diagram and have $J$ larger than 100 meV. While this feature makes the cuprates very different from other transition metal oxides, it is of great interest whether layered $d^9$ nickelates can also have such a large $J$. However, one complexity is that NdNiO$_2$ is not a Mott insulator due to carrier doping…
Recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelates has renewed interest in understanding the nature of high-temperature superconductivity more generally. The low-energy electronic structure of the parent compound NdNiO$_{2}$, the role of electronic correlations in driving superconductivity, and the possible relationship betweeen the cuprates and the nickelates are still open questions. Here, by comparing LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ systematically within a parameter-free density functional framework, all-electron first-principles framework, we reveal the role Nd 4$f$ elect…
Low-valence nickelates $-$ including infinite-layer (IL) and trilayer (TL) compounds $-$ are longstanding candidates for mimicking the high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates. A recent breakthrough in the field came with the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped IL nickelates. Yet, the degree of similarity between low-valence nickelates and cuprates is the subject of a profound debate for which soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edge provided critical input. In this review, we will discuss the essential elements of the electronic structure of low-valance…
The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates is presently an important topic in condensed-matter physics, and potential similarities to and differences from cuprates are under intense debate. We determine general features of the charge excitation spectrum in nickelates from two opposite viewpoints: (i) Nickelates are regarded as strongly correlated electron systems like cuprate superconductors and thus can be described by the $t$-$J$ model, and (ii) electron correlation effects are not as strong as in cuprates, and thus, random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations may capt…
Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.
Effective models are constructed for a newly discovered superconductor (Nd,Sr)NiO2, which has been considered as a possible nickelate analogue of the cuprates owing to the d9 electron configuration. Estimation of the effective interaction, which turns out to require a multiorbital model that takes account of all the orbitals involved on the Fermi surface, shows that the effective interactions are significantly larger than in the cuprates. A fluctuation exchange study for the model indicates that dx2-y2-wave superconductivity is likely to occur as in the cuprates, where the transition temperatu…
In materials science, much effort has been devoted to reproduce superconductivity in chemical compositions analogous to cuprate superconductors since their discovery over thirty years ago. This approach was recently successful in realising superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates. Although differing from cuprates in electronic and magnetic properties, strong Coulomb interactions suggest infinite-layer nickelates have a propensity to various symmetry-breaking orders that populate the cuprates. Here we report the observation of charge density waves (CDWs) in infinite-layer NdNiO$_2$ films …
Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is an overdoped analog of hole-doped layered cuprates. Here we show via ab initio calculations that Ce-doped Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ (Pr$_3$CeNi$_3$O$_8$) has the same electronic structure as the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of parent cuprates. We find that substantial Ce-doping should be thermodynamically stable and that other 4+ cations would yield a similar antiferromagnetic insulating state, arguing this configuration is robust for layered nickelates of low enough valence. The analogies with cuprates at different $d$ fillings suggest that intermediate Ce-doping concentrat…
Layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy has been used to synthesize cuprate-nickelate multilayer structures of composition (La$_2$CuO$_4$)$_m$/LaO/(LaNiO$_3$)$_n$. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that these structures allow a clean separation of dopant and doped layers. Specifically, the LaO layer separating cuprate and nickelate blocks provides an additional charge that, according to density functional theory calculations, is predominantly accommodated in the interfacial nickelate layers. This is reflected in an elongation of bond distances and changes in valence…

We consider a Landau theory of coupled charge and spin-density wave order parameters as a simple model for the ordering that has been observed experimentally in the La_2NiO_4 and La_2CuO_4 families of doped antiferromagnets. The period of the charge-density wave is generically half that of the spin-density wave, or equivalently the charges form antiphase domain walls in the antiferromagnetic order. A sharp distinction exists between the case in which the ordering is primarily charge driven (which produces a sequence of transitions in qualitative agreement with experiment) or spin driven (which…
The discovery of infinite-layer nickelate superconductors has spurred enormous interest. While the Ni$^{1+}$ cations possess nominally the same 3$d^9$ configuration as Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates, the electronic structure variances remain elusive. Here, we present a soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy study on parent and doped infinite-layer Pr-nickelate thin films with a doped perovskite reference. By identifying the Ni character with resonant photoemission and comparison to density functional theory + U (on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) calculations, we estimate U ~5 eV, smaller than the charge…
The correlated electronic structure of the infinite-layer compounds NdNiO$_2$ and SrCuO$_2$ at stoichiometry and with finite hole doping is compared. Key differences are elucidated from an advanced first-principles many-body perspective. Contrary to the charge-transfer insulating cuprate, the self-doped nickelate remains non-insulating even for large interaction strength, though the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ spectral weight is also gapped in that limit. Hybridization between Ni$(3d)$ and Nd$(5d)$ is crucial for the appearance of the self-doping band. Upon realistic hole doping, Sr$_{1-y}$CuO$_2$ shows …
The recent discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped planar nickelates R1-xSrNiO2 (R=Pr,Nd) raises the foundational question of how the electronic structure and electronic correlations of these Ni1+ compounds compare to those of the Cu2+ cuprate superconductors. Here, we present an Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni3O8, revealing an electronic structure and Fermi surface very similar to that of the hole-doped cuprates but with a few critical differences. Specifically, the main portions of the Fermi surface are extremely similar to that of…
Using the local density approximation and its combination with dynamical mean-field theory, we show that electronic correlations induce a single-sheet, cuprate-like Fermi surface for hole-doped 1/1 LaNiO3 /LaAlO3 heterostructures, even though both eg orbitals contribute to it. The Ni 3d 3z^2-1 orbital plays the role of the axial Cu 4s-like orbital in the cuprates. These two results indicate that "orbital engineering" by means of heterostructuring should be possible. As we also find strong antiferromagnetic correlations, the low-energy electronic and spin excitations in nickelate heterostructur…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has attracted much attention due to their association to the high-$T_c$ cuprates. Cuprate superconductivity was first demonstrated in bulk samples and subsequently in thin films. In the nickelates, however, the situation has been reversed: although surging as a bulk phenomenon, nickelate superconductivity has only been reported in thin films so far. At the same time, the specifics of infinite-layer nickelates yield distinct interface and surface effects that determine their bulk vs thin-film behavior. In this paper, we provide an …
The discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelates has opened new perspectives in the context of quantum materials. We analyze, via first-principles calculations, the electronic properties of La$_2$NiO$_3$F -- the first single-layer T'-type nickelate -- and compare these properties with those of related nickelates and isostructural cuprates. We find that La$_2$NiO$_3$F is essentially a single-band system with a Fermi surface dominated by the Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ states with an exceptional 2D character. In addition, the hopping ratio is similar to that of the highest $T_c$ cuprate…
We report nuclear magnetic resonance data in the bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O6. This material belongs to a family of low valence nickel oxides with square planar coordination of the Ni ions and is isoelectronic to the high temperature superconducting cuprates. Although the three layer nickelate compound exhibits a spin-state transition accompanied by antiferromagnetic order, the bilayer material shows no phase transition. The NMR data in the bilayer La3Ni2O6 reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations down to 5K that are surprisingly similar to those present in the magnetically ord…
The discovery of superconducting nickelates reignited hope for elucidating the high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ superconductivity mechanism in the isostructural cuprates. While in the cuprates, the superconducting gap opens up on a single-band of the quasi-2D Fermi surface, the nickelates are known to have 3D nature of electronic structure with multi-band. This raises a serious question about the role of 2D nature for the high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ superconductivity. Here, employing dynamical mean field theory combined with GW method, we found the Kondo effect driven by the strong correlation of Nd-4$f$ and N…
The recent observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has brought intense debate on the established knowledge of unconventional superconductivity based on the cuprates. Despite many similarities, the nickelates differ from the cuprates in many characteristics, the most notable one among which is the magnetism. Instead of a canonical antiferromagnetic Mott insulator as the undoped cuprates, from which the superconductivity is generally believed to arise upon doping, the undoped nickelates show no sign of magnetic ordering in experiments. Through a combined density functional …
The discovery of superconductivity in square-planar low valence nickelates has ignited a vigorous debate regarding their essential electronic properties: Do these materials have appreciable oxygen charge-transfer character akin to the cuprates, or are they in a distinct Mott-Hubbard regime where oxygen plays a minimal role? Here, we resolve this question using O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the low valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and a prototypical cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.35$). As expected, the cuprate lies deep in the charge-t…
The discovery of superconductivity in a $d^{9-δ}$ nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced trilayer nickelate $d^{9-1/3}$ La4Ni3O8 and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ~80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of $J = 69(4)4$ meV is obs…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$, with a critical temperature of $10-15$ K suggests the possibility of a new family of nickel-based high-temperature superconductors (HTS). NdNiO$_{2}$ is the $n=\infty$ member of a larger series of layered nickelates with chemical formula R$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$ (R $=$ La, Nd, Pr; $n = 2, 3, \dots, \infty$). The $n=3$ member has been experimentally and theoretically shown to be cuprate-like and a promising HTS candidate if electron doping could be achieved. The higher-order $n=4,5,$ and $6$ members of the series fall directly …
We provide a set of computational experiments based on \textit{ab initio} calculations to elucidate whether a cuprate-like antiferromagnetic insulating state can be present in the phase diagram of the low-valence layered nickelate family (R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$, R= rare-earth, $n=1-\infty$) in proximity to half-filling. It is well established that at $d^9$ filling the infinite-layer ($n=\infty$) nickelate is metallic, in contrast to cuprates wherein an antiferromagnetic insulator is expected. We show that for the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) reduced phases of the series (finite $n$) an antiferrom…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxide materials, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials. One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and indeed superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$. Undoped NdNiO$_2$ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ and is known as the 'infinite-layer' ($n = \infty$) nickelate. Here, we report the s…
Following the discovery of superconductivity in the cuprates and the seminal work by Anderson, the theoretical efforts to understand high-temperature superconductivity have been focusing to a large extent on a simple model: the one-band Hubbard model. However, superconducting cuprates need to be doped, and the doped holes go into the oxygen orbitals. This requires a more elaborate multi-band model such as the three-orbital Emery model. The recently discovered nickelate superconductors appear, at first glance, to be even more complicated multi-orbital systems. Here, we analyse this multi-orbita…
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
Charge order is a central feature of the physics of cuprate superconductors and is known to arise from a modulation of holes with primarily oxygen character. Low-valence nickelate superconductors also host charge order, but the electronic character of this symmetry breaking is unsettled. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni $L_2$-edge, we identify intertwined involvements of Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$, $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$, and O $2p_σ$ orbitals in the formation of diagonal charge order in an overdoped low-valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. The Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, strong…
We analyze the electronic structure of the recently synthesized higher-order nickelate Ruddlesden-Popper phases La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n=4-6$) using first-principles calculations. For all materials, our results show large holelike Fermi surfaces with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ character that closely resemble those of optimally hole-doped cuprates. For higher values of $n$, extra non-cuprate-like bands of $d_{z^2}$ orbital character appear. These aspects highlight that this Ruddlesden-Popper series can provide a means to modify the electronic ground states of nickelates by tuning their dimensionality.…
High temperature cuprate superconductivity remains a defining problem in condensed matter physics. Among myriad approaches to addressing this problem has been the study of alternative transition metal oxides with similar structures and 3d electron count that are suggested as proxies for cuprate physics. None of these analogs has been superconducting, and few are even metallic. Here, we report that the low-valent, quasi-two-dimensional trilayer compound, Pr4Ni3O8 avoids a charge-stripe ordered phase previously reported for La4Ni3O8, leading to a metallic ground state. By combining x-ray absorpt…

Understanding similarities and differences between the cuprate and nickelate superconductors is drawing intense current interest. Competing charge orders have been observed recently in the $undoped$ infinite-layer nickelates in sharp contrast to the $undoped$ cuprates which exhibit robust antiferromagnetic insulating ground states. The microscopic mechanisms driving these differences remain unclear. Here, using in-depth first-principles and many-body theory based modeling, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO$_2$, hosts a charge density wave (CDW) ground state with t…
The discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_{2}$ is a crucial breakthrough in the long pursuit for nickel oxide materials with electronic and magnetic properties similar to those of the cuprates. NdNiO$_2$ is the infinite-layer member of a family of square-planar nickelates with general chemical formula R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ (R = La, Pr, Nd, $n= 2, 3, ... \infty$). In this letter, we investigate superconductivity in the trilayer member of this series (R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$) using a combination of first-principles and $t-J$ model calculations. R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ compounds resemble cuprat…
Superconducting nickelates appear to be difficult to synthesize. Since the chemical reduction of ABO3 (A: rare earth; B transition metal) with CaH2 may result in both, ABO2 and ABO2H, we calculate the topotactic H binding energy by density functional theory (DFT). We find intercalating H is energetically favorable for LaNiO2 but not for Sr-doped NdNiO2. This has dramatic consequences for the electronic structure as determined by DFT+dynamical mean field theory: that of 3d9 LaNiO2 is similar to (doped) cuprates, 3d8 LaNiO2H is a two-orbital Mott insulator. Topotactical H might hence explain why…
Ruddlesden-Popper and reduced Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates are intriguing candidates for mimicking the properties of high-temperature superconducting cuprates. The degree of similarity between these nickelates and cuprates has been the subject of considerable debate. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has played an important role in exploring their electronic and magnetic excitations, but these efforts have been stymied by inconsistencies between different samples and the lack of publicly available data for detailed comparison. To address this issue, we present open RIXS data on La4Ni3…
In strongly correlated materials, lattice, charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom interact with each other, leading to emergent physical properties such as superconductivity, colossal magnetic resistance and metal-insulator transition. Quasi-2D square planar nickelates, Rn+1NinO2n+2 (R=rare earth, n=2, 3...), are of significant interest and long sought for cuprate analogue due to the 3d9 electronic configuration of Ni+, the same as the active ion Cu2+ in the high-Tc superconducting cuprates. The field has attracted intense attention since 2019 due to the discovery of superconductivity in …
We present an $\textit{ab initio}$ study of the excitonic states of a prototypical high-temperature superconductor La$_2$CuO$_4$ and compare them to the isostructural single-layer nickelate La$_2$NiO$_4$. Key difference in the low-energy electronic structure leads to very different excitonic behavior. Excitons in La$_2$CuO$_4$ are delocalized and can freely move in the CuO$_2$ plane without disturbing the antiferromagnetic order. In contrast, in La$_2$NiO$_4$ we find the low-lying excitonic states to be extremely localized, producing a nearly flat dispersion. The theoretically obtained exciton…
