The recent discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$, with a critical temperature of $10-15$ K suggests the possibility of a new family of nickel-based high-temperature superconductors (HTS). NdNiO$_{2}$ is the $n=\infty$ member of a larger series of layered nickelates with chemical formula R$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$ (R $=$ La, Nd, Pr; $n = 2, 3, \dots, \infty$). The $n=3$ member has been experimentally and theoretically shown to be cuprate-like and a promising HTS candidate if electron doping could be achieved. The higher-order $n=4,5,$ and $6$ members of the series fall directly into the cuprate dome area of filling without the need of doping, thus making them promising materials to study, but have not been synthesized yet. Here, we perform first-principles calculations on hypothetical $n=4,5,$ and $6$ structures to study their electronic and magnetic properties and compare them with the known $n=\infty$ and $n=3$ materials. From our calculations, we find that the cuprate-like character of layered nickelates increases from the $n=\infty$ to the $n=3$ members as the charge transfer energy and the self-doping effect due to R-$d$ bands around the Fermi level gradually decrease.
We provide a set of computational experiments based on \textit{ab initio} calculations to elucidate whether a cuprate-like antiferromagnetic insulating state can be present in the phase diagram of the low-valence layered nickelate family (R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$, R= rare-earth, $n=1-\infty$) in proximity to half-filling. It is well established that at $d^9$ filling the infinite-layer ($n=\infty$) nickelate is metallic, in contrast to cuprates wherein an antiferromagnetic insulator is expected. We show that for the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) reduced phases of the series (finite $n$) an antiferrom…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in the Sr-doped layered nickelate NdNiO$_2$, we perform a systematic computational materials design of layered nickelates that are dynamically stable and whose electronic structure better mimics the electronic structure of high-$T_c$ cuprates than NdNiO$_2$. While the Ni $3d$ orbitals are self-doped from the $d^9$ configuration in NdNiO$_2$ and the Nd-layer states form Fermi pockets, we find more than 10 promising compounds for which the self-doping is almost or even completely suppressed. We derive effective single-band models for those m…
We have investigated charge dynamics and electronic structures for single crystals of metallic layered nickelates, R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu), isostructural to La2-xSrxCuO4. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the barely-metallic Eu0.9Sr1.1NiO4 (R=Eu, x=1.1) has revealed a large hole surface of x2-y2 character with a high-energy pseudogap of the same symmetry and comparable magnitude with those of underdoped (x<0.1) cuprates, although the antiferromagnetic interactions are one order of magnitude smaller. This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the …
Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is an overdoped analog of hole-doped layered cuprates. Here we show via ab initio calculations that Ce-doped Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ (Pr$_3$CeNi$_3$O$_8$) has the same electronic structure as the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of parent cuprates. We find that substantial Ce-doping should be thermodynamically stable and that other 4+ cations would yield a similar antiferromagnetic insulating state, arguing this configuration is robust for layered nickelates of low enough valence. The analogies with cuprates at different $d$ fillings suggest that intermediate Ce-doping concentrat…
To describe quasi two-dimensional nickelates we introduce an effective Hamiltonian for $e_g$ electrons which includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions, spin-spin and Jahn-Teller (static) terms. The experimental stripe phases are correctly reproduced by the model. The mechanisms responsible for stripe formation are different than those reported in cuprates and manganites.
The recent observation of superconductivity in an infinite-layer and quintuple-layer nickelate within the same $R_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$ series ($R$ = rare-earth, $n=2-\infty$, with $n$ indicating the number of NiO$_{2}$ layers along the $c$-axis), unlocks their potential to embody a whole family of unconventional superconductors. Here, we systematically investigate the many-body electronic structure of the layered nickelates (with $n=2-6,\infty$) within a density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory framework and contrast it with that of the known superconducting members of th…
Ground-state properties of layered nickelates are investigated based on the orbital-degenerate Hubbard model coupled with lattice distortions, by using umerical techniques. The Néel state composed of spin S=1 ions is confirmed in the undoped limit x=0. At x=1/2, novel antiferromagnetic states, called CE- and E-type phases, are found by increasing the Hund's coupling. (3 x^2 - r^2 / 3 y^2 - r^2)-type orbital ordering is predicted to occur in a checkerboard-type charge-ordered state. At x=1/3, both Coulombic and phononic interactions are found to be important, since the former stabilizes the spi…
We investigate the crystal structure and the electronic properties of the trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ by means of quantum mechanical calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We find that, at low temperature, La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ undergoes a hitherto unreported structural phase transition and transforms to a new monoclinic $P2_1/a$ phase. This phase exhibits electronic properties in agreement with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data reported in H.\ Li \emph{et al}., Nat.\ Commun.\ \textbf{8}, 704 (2017) and should be considered in models focu…
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
We study the temporal stability of stripe-type spin order in a layered nickelate with X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and observe fluctuations on time scales of tens of minutes over a wide temperature range. These fluctuations show an anomalous temperature dependence: they slow down at intermediate temperatures and speed up both upon heating and cooling. This behavior appears to be directly connected with spatial correlations: stripes fluctuate slowly when stripe correlation lengths are large and become faster when spatial correlations decrease. A low-temperature decay of nickelate strip…
The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed…
The electronic structure and magnetism in the sodium nickelate NaNiO_2 in the low-temperature phase is studied from density-functional calculations using the linear muffin-tin orbitals method. An antiferromagnetic solution with a magnetic moment of 0.7 m_B per Ni ion is found. A ferrodistorsive orbital ordering is shown to occur due to the Jahn-Teller distortion around the Ni^{3+} ion in agreement with the orbital ordering inferred from neutron diffraction. While the intralayer exchange is ferromagnetic, the interlayer exchange is weakly antiferromagnetic, mediated by a long Ni-O-Na-O-Ni super…
Three low-valence layered nickelates with general formula La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ ($δ$=0.0, 0.5, 1) are studied by ab initio techniques. Both the insulating and metallic limits are analyzed, together with the compound at the Mott transition ($δ$= 0.5; Ni$^{2+}$), that shows insulating behavior, with all Ni atoms in a S=1 high-spin state. The compound in the $δ$= 1 limit (La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$), with mean formal valence Ni$^{1.5+}$ and hence nominally metallic, nevertheless shows a correlated {\it molecular} insulating state, produced by the quantum confinement of the NiO$_2$ bilayers and the presenc…
This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy ran…
The layered square-planar nickelates, Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$, are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the $n=3$ Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$, and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. We synthesize our highest quality Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$ films under compressive strain on La…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe quasi-two-dimensional layered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ nickelates and study it using correlated wave functions on $8 \times 8 $ and $6 \times 6 $ clusters. The effective Hamiltonian includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons (intraorbital $U$ and Hund's exchange $J_H$) and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller distortions (static modes). The experimental ground state phases with inhomogeneous charge, spin and orbital order at the dopings $x=1/3$ and $x=1/2$ are reproduced very wel…
Charge dynamics and its critical behavior are investigated near the metal-insulator transition of layered-nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu). The polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment clearly shows the multi-orbital nature which enables the x2-y2-orbital-based checkerboard-type charge ordering or correlation to persist up to the critical doping region (x sim 1). In the barely metallic region proximate to the charge-ordered insulating phase, the nominal carrier density estimated from the Hall coefficient markedly decreases in accord with development of the pseudogap structure in the …
Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surface instability are emphasized. A rationalization for the differences in transport properties between the cuprates and nic…
The discovery of infinite-layer nickelate superconductors has spurred enormous interest. While the Ni$^{1+}$ cations possess nominally the same 3$d^9$ configuration as Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates, the electronic structure variances remain elusive. Here, we present a soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy study on parent and doped infinite-layer Pr-nickelate thin films with a doped perovskite reference. By identifying the Ni character with resonant photoemission and comparison to density functional theory + U (on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) calculations, we estimate U ~5 eV, smaller than the charge…
The low-frequency dielectric response of hole-doped insulators La_{2}Cu_{1-x}Li_{x}O_{4} and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4} shows a large dielectric constant ε^{'} at high temperature and a step-like drop by a factor of 100 at a material-dependent low temperature T_{f}. T_{f} increases with frequency and the dielectric response shows universal scaling in a Cole-Cole plot, suggesting that a charge glass state is realized both in the cuprates and in the nickelates.
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in doped NdNiO$_2$, we study the magnetic exchange interaction $J$ in layered $d^9$ nickelates from first principles. The mother compounds of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates belong to the charge-transfer regime in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen diagram and have $J$ larger than 100 meV. While this feature makes the cuprates very different from other transition metal oxides, it is of great interest whether layered $d^9$ nickelates can also have such a large $J$. However, one complexity is that NdNiO$_2$ is not a Mott insulator due to carrier doping…
We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic Raman scattering studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the bulk samples of the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to Nd $3d$ and O $1s$ XPS spectra, we conclude that NdNiO$_2$ has a large transfer energy. From the analysis of the main line of the Ni $2p_{3/2}$ XPS, we confirm the NiO$_2$ planes in NdNiO$_2$ are of Mott-Hubbard type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak positio…
Charge order is a central feature of the physics of cuprate superconductors and is known to arise from a modulation of holes with primarily oxygen character. Low-valence nickelate superconductors also host charge order, but the electronic character of this symmetry breaking is unsettled. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni $L_2$-edge, we identify intertwined involvements of Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$, $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$, and O $2p_σ$ orbitals in the formation of diagonal charge order in an overdoped low-valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. The Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, strong…
Ab initio calculations predict a metal-insulator transition at zero temperature to occur in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ at moderate pressures as a result of a pressure-induced spin-state transition. The spin-state transition that is seen at 105 K at ambient pressure from a low-temperature high-spin state to a high-temperature low-spin state has been observed to be shifted to lower temperatures as pressure is applied. From our calculations we find that a smaller unit cell volume favors the metallic low-spin state, which becomes more stable at 5 GPa. Similar physics should take place in the related compou…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped planar nickelates R1-xSrNiO2 (R=Pr,Nd) raises the foundational question of how the electronic structure and electronic correlations of these Ni1+ compounds compare to those of the Cu2+ cuprate superconductors. Here, we present an Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni3O8, revealing an electronic structure and Fermi surface very similar to that of the hole-doped cuprates but with a few critical differences. Specifically, the main portions of the Fermi surface are extremely similar to that of…
The 2019 discovery of high temperature superconductivity in layered nickelate films, Nd$_{1-x}$SrNiO$_2$, has galvanized a community that has been studying nickelates for more than 30 years both as cuprate analogs and in their own right. On the surface, infinite layer nickelates, and their multilayer analogs, should be promising candidates based on our understanding of cuprates: square planar coordination and a parent d9 configuration that places a single hole in a dx2-y2 planar orbital makes nickelates seem poised for superconductivity. But creating crystals and films of sufficient quality of…
Recently, superconductivity was discovered in the infinite layer of hole-doped nickelates NdNiO$_{2}$. Contrary to this, superconductivity in LaNiO$_{2}$ is still under debate. This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ appro…

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in the pentalayer nickelate Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ [Nature Materials 10.1038], we calculate its electronic structure and superconducting critical temperature. We find that electronic correlations are essential for pushing Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ into the superconducting doping range as they shift the electron pockets above the Fermi energy. As a consequence, Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ can be described with a single $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital per Ni. Instead, for the bilayer nickelate Nd$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ we find correlations to drive the system into a three-…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ (R=La, Pr) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure (pO$_2$) of 20 bar for La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and 140 bar for Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. A combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ (R=La, Pr) crystallizes in the monoclinic $P$2$_1$/$a$ (Z=2) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable ortho…
The discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ [1] introduced a new family of layered nickelate superconductors that has now been extended to include a range of Sr-doping [2, 3], Pr or La in place of Nd [4-6], and the 5-layer Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ [7]. A number of studies indicate that electron correlations are strong in these materials [8-14], and hence a central question is whether or not magnetism is present as a consequence of these interactions. Here we report muon spin rotation/relaxation studies of a series of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates. In all cases we …
General trends of electronic structures, superconducting pairing, and magnetic correlations in the Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate $m$-layered superconductors La$_{m+1}$Ni$_{m}$O$_{3m+1}$
Reduced dimensionality and strong electronic correlations, which are among the most important ingredients for cupratelike high-Tc superconductivity, characterize also the physics of nickelate-based heterostructures. Starting from the local-density approximation we arrive at a simple two-band model for quasi-two-dimensional 2D LaNiO3 /LaAlO3 heterostructures and extend it by introducing an appropriate hopping in the z direction to describe the dimensional crossover to three dimensions 3D. Using dynamical mean-field theory, we study the effects of electronic correlations with increasing interact…
We analyze the electronic structure of the recently synthesized higher-order nickelate Ruddlesden-Popper phases La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n=4-6$) using first-principles calculations. For all materials, our results show large holelike Fermi surfaces with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ character that closely resemble those of optimally hole-doped cuprates. For higher values of $n$, extra non-cuprate-like bands of $d_{z^2}$ orbital character appear. These aspects highlight that this Ruddlesden-Popper series can provide a means to modify the electronic ground states of nickelates by tuning their dimensionality.…
Using first-principles calculations, we analyze the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R= rare-earth) as R changes across the lanthanide series from La to Lu. By correlating these changes with in-plane and out-of-plane lattice parameter reductions, we conclude that the in-plane Ni-O distance is the relevant control parameter in infinite-layer nickelates. An antiferromagnetic ground state is obtained for all RNiO$_2$ (R=La-Lu). This antiferromagnetic state remains metallic across the lanthanide series and is defined by a multiorb…
We study theoretically the fluoro-nickelate series $A$NiF$_2$ ($A=$ Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) in the tetragonal $P4/mmm$ infinite-layer structure. We use density functional theory to determine the structural parameters and the electronic band structure of these unprecedented compounds. Thus, we predict these materials as model $d^9$ systems where the Ni$^{1+}$ oxidation is realized and the low-energy physics is completely determined by the Ni-3$d$ bands only. Fluoro-nickelates of this class thus offer an ideal platform for the study of intriguing physics that emerges out of the special $d^9$ electron…
Low-valence nickelates $-$ including infinite-layer (IL) and trilayer (TL) compounds $-$ are longstanding candidates for mimicking the high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates. A recent breakthrough in the field came with the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped IL nickelates. Yet, the degree of similarity between low-valence nickelates and cuprates is the subject of a profound debate for which soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edge provided critical input. In this review, we will discuss the essential elements of the electronic structure of low-valance…
Recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelates has renewed interest in understanding the nature of high-temperature superconductivity more generally. The low-energy electronic structure of the parent compound NdNiO$_{2}$, the role of electronic correlations in driving superconductivity, and the possible relationship betweeen the cuprates and the nickelates are still open questions. Here, by comparing LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ systematically within a parameter-free density functional framework, all-electron first-principles framework, we reveal the role Nd 4$f$ elect…
