Using first-principles calculations, we analyze the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R= rare-earth) as R changes across the lanthanide series from La to Lu. By correlating these changes with in-plane and out-of-plane lattice parameter reductions, we conclude that the in-plane Ni-O distance is the relevant control parameter in infinite-layer nickelates. An antiferromagnetic ground state is obtained for all RNiO$_2$ (R=La-Lu). This antiferromagnetic state remains metallic across the lanthanide series and is defined by a multiorbital picture with low-energy relevance of a flat Ni-d$_{z^2}$ band pinned at the Fermi level, in contrast to cuprates. Other non-cuprate-like properties such as the involvement of R-$d$ bands at the Fermi level, a large charge transfer energy, and a suppressed superexchange are robust for all RNiO$_2$ materials.
The perovskite nickelates RNiO$_3$ (R: rare-earth) have been studied as potential multiferroic compounds. A certain degree of charge disproportionation in the Ni ions has been confirmed by high resolution synchrotron power diffraction: instead of the nominal Ni$^{3+}$ valence, they can have the mixed-valence state Ni$^{(3-δ)+}$ and Ni$^{(3+δ)+}$, though agreement has not been reached on the precise value of $δ$ (e.g. for NdNiO$_3$, $δ=0.0$ and $δ=0.29$ were reported). Also, the magnetic ground state is not yet clear: collinear and non-collinear Ni-O magnetic structures have been proposed to ex…
The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hole doped NdNiO2, similar to CaCuO2, has received enormous attention. However, different from CaCuO2, RNiO2 (R = Nd, La) has itinerant electrons in the rare-earth spacer layer. Previous studies show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 and rare-earth-d orbitals is very weak and thus RNiO2 is still a promising analog of CaCuO2. Here, we perform first-principles calculations to show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons in RNiO2 is substantially stronger than previously thought. The dominant hybridizatio…
The RNiO$_3$ perovskites are known to order antiferromagnetically below a material-dependent Néel temperature $T_\text{N}$. We report experimental evidence indicating the existence of a second magnetically-ordered phase in TlNiO$_3$ above $T_\text{N} = 104$ K, obtained using nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation spectroscopy. The new phase, which persists up to a temperature $T_\text{N}^* = 202$ K, is suppressed by the application of an external magnetic field of approximately 1 T. It is not yet known if such a phase also exists in other perovskite nickelates.
The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite layer nickelates, RNiO2 (R = Nd, Pr, La) has garnered sustained interest in the field. A definitive picture of low-energy many-body states has not yet emerged. We provide new insights into the low-energy physics, based on our embedded dynamical mean-field theory calculations, and propose a correlation (U)-temperature (T) phase diagram. The key features are a low-T Fermi liquid (FL) phase, a high-T Curie-Weiss regime, and an antiferromagnetic phase in a narrow U-T region. We associate the onset of the FL phase with partial screening of N…
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
The perovksite rare-earth nickelates, RNiO$_3$ (R=La ... Lu), are a class of materials displaying a rich phase-diagram of metallic and insulating phases associated with charge and magnetic order. Being in the charge transfer regime, Ni$^{3+}$ in octahedral coordination displays a strong hybridization with oxygen to form $3d$ - $2p$ mixed states, which results in a strong admixture of $3d^8\underline{L}$ into $3d^7$, where $\underline{L}$ denotes a hole on the oxygen. To understand the nature of this strongly hybridized ground state, we present a detailed study of the Ni and O electronic struct…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
Motivated by recent Fermi surface and transport measurements on LaNiO3, we study the Mott Metal-Insulator transitions of perovskite nickelates, with the chemical formula RNiO3, where R is a rare-earth ion. We introduce and study a minimal two-band model, which takes into account only the eg bands. In the weak to intermediate correlation limit, a Hartree-Fock analysis predicts charge and spin order consistent with experiments on R=Pr, Nd, driven by Fermi surface nesting. It also produces an interesting semi-metallic electronic state in the model when an ideal cubic structure is assumed. We also…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) remains among the most thoroughly studied phenomena in solid state physics, but the complexity of the phenomena, which usually involves cooperation of many degrees of freedom including orbitals, fluctuating local moments, magnetism, and the crystal structure, have resisted predictive ab-initio treatment. Here we develop ab-initio theoretical method for correlated electron materials, based on Dynamical Mean Field Theory, which can predict the change of the crystal structure across the MIT at finite temperature. This allows us to study the coupling between el…
Rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_2$ adopting an infinite-layer phase show superconductivity once La, Pr or Nd are substituted by a divalent cation. Either in the pristine or doped form, these materials are reported to adopt a high symmetry, perfectly symmetric, P4/mmm tetragonal cell. Nevertheless, bulk compounds are scarce, hindering a full understanding of the role of chemical pressure or strain on lattice distortions that in turn could alter magnetic and electronic properties of the 2D nickelates. Here, by performing a full analysis of the prototypical YNiO$_2$ compound with first-principles sim…
Since the discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R=La, Pr, Nd), great research efforts have been paid to unveil its underlying superconducting mechanism. However, the physical origin of the intriguing hole-doped superconductivity phase diagram, characterized by a superconductivity dome sandwiched between two weak insulators, is still unclear. Here, we present a microscopic theory for electronic structure of nickelates from a fundamental model-based perspective. We found that the appearance of weak insulator phase in lightly and heavily hole-doped regime is domina…
The discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ [1] introduced a new family of layered nickelate superconductors that has now been extended to include a range of Sr-doping [2, 3], Pr or La in place of Nd [4-6], and the 5-layer Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ [7]. A number of studies indicate that electron correlations are strong in these materials [8-14], and hence a central question is whether or not magnetism is present as a consequence of these interactions. Here we report muon spin rotation/relaxation studies of a series of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates. In all cases we …

The recent observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has brought intense debate on the established knowledge of unconventional superconductivity based on the cuprates. Despite many similarities, the nickelates differ from the cuprates in many characteristics, the most notable one among which is the magnetism. Instead of a canonical antiferromagnetic Mott insulator as the undoped cuprates, from which the superconductivity is generally believed to arise upon doping, the undoped nickelates show no sign of magnetic ordering in experiments. Through a combined density functional …
Formation of charge-density-waves in ordered electronic phases (such as charge-order) is an emergent phenomenon in the perovskite class of correlated oxides. This scenario is visualized to prevail in exotic RNiO3 (R=rare-earth) nickelates in which the structure controls the incipient charge-order to form in weak localization limit. However, any consequent effect demonstrating these nickelates in rare category of charge-density-waves conductors with controlled charge-lattice interactions has been a fundamental challenge so-far. Here, we present first evidence of the charge-density-waves in a pr…

Magnetic ordering phenomena have a profound influence on the macroscopic properties of correlated-electron materials, but their realistic prediction remains a formidable challenge. An archetypical example is the ternary nickel oxide system RNiO3 (R = rare earth), where the period-four magnetic order with proposals of collinear and non-collinear structures and the amplitude of magnetic moments on different Ni sublattices have been subjects of debate for decades. Here we introduce an elementary model system - NdNiO3 slabs embedded in a non-magnetic NdGaO3 matrix - and use polarized resonant x-ra…
The recently discovered superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ provides a new opportunity for studying strongly correlated unconventional superconductivity. The single-hole Ni$^+$ ($3d^9$) configuration in the parent compound NdNiO$_2$ is similar to that of Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates. We suggest that after doping, the intra-orbital spin-singlet and inter-orbital spin-triplet double-hole (doublon) configurations of Ni$^{2+}$ are competing, and we construct a two-band Hubbard model by including both the $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $3d_{xy}$-orbitals. The effective spin-orbital super-exchange model in th…
Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the control of the electronic, magnetic, ionic, and transport properties of functional oxide perovskites. Rare earth nickelates (RENiO$_{3-x}$) have emerged over the years as a rich platform to study the interplay between the lattice, the electronic structure, and ordered magnetism. In this study, we investigate the evolution of the electronic and magnetic structure in thin films of RENiO$_{3-x}$, using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and imaging, resonant X-ray scattering, and extended multiplet ligand field theory modeling. We find that …
We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study a thin film of NdNiO$_3$, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and compressed NiO$_6$ octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both …
The electronic structure and magnetism in the sodium nickelate NaNiO_2 in the low-temperature phase is studied from density-functional calculations using the linear muffin-tin orbitals method. An antiferromagnetic solution with a magnetic moment of 0.7 m_B per Ni ion is found. A ferrodistorsive orbital ordering is shown to occur due to the Jahn-Teller distortion around the Ni^{3+} ion in agreement with the orbital ordering inferred from neutron diffraction. While the intralayer exchange is ferromagnetic, the interlayer exchange is weakly antiferromagnetic, mediated by a long Ni-O-Na-O-Ni super…
Strongly correlated electron systems such as the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO3, R = rare-earth element) can exhibit synapse-like continuous long term potentiation and depression when gated with ionic liquids; exploiting the extreme sensitivity of coupled charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom to stoichiometry. We present experimental real-time, device-level classical conditioning and unlearning using nickelate-based synaptic devices in an electronic circuit compatible with both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. We establish a physical model for the device behavior based on elect…
We discuss the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a competing high-spin/low-spin two-orbital two-electron model on a square-lattice possibly relevant to the nickelates such as Ba$_2$NiO$_2$(AgSe)$_2$ (BNOAS). We focus on parameter regimes where a high-spin ($S=1$) and a low-spin ($S=0$) state are energetically close to each other and discuss various exchange processes in such a system. The model we study is a variant of, but different from the Kondo-necklace model proposed for the system by Jin et al (H. S. Jin, W. E. Pickett and K. W. Lee, Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033197 (2020)). Although…

The recent discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$ films grown on SrTiO$_3$ started a novel field within unconventional superconductivity. To understand the similarities and differences between nickelate and cuprate layers on the same SrTiO$_3$ substrate, here based on the density functional theory we have systematically investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of NdNiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ and CaCuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ systems. Our results revealed a strong lattice reconstruction in the case of NdNiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$, resulting in a polar film, with the surface and interf…

The novel nickelate superconductors of infinite-layer type feature challenging electronic pecularities in the normal-state phase diagram with doping. Distinct many-body behavior and different dispersion regimes of the entangled $\{$Ni-$d_{z^2}$, Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$$\}$ orbital sector give rise to highly rich physics, which is here studied for the case of the NdNiO$_2$ system. An analysis based on advanced realistic dynamical mean-field theory unveils that the superconducting hole-doped region is the meeting place of a (self-)doped Mott insulator from the underdoped side, and a bad Hund metal from…
We study the normal state electronic structure of the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductor, Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. Using SrNiO$_2$ as a reference, we find that Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ is a multi-orbital electronic system with characteristic Hund's metal behaviors, such as metallicity, the importance of high-spin configurations, tendency towards orbital differentiation, and the absence of magnetism in regimes which are ordered according to static mean-field theories. In addition, our DFT+DMFT calculations with exact double counting scheme show that despite large charge …
Structural stability, electronic structure, and magnetism of the $d^9$ double infinite-layer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_5$F under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain
We have synthesized a series of the Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate solid solution Ln4-xLn'xNi3O10 (Ln and Ln' = La, Pr and Nd; x = 0, 1, 2 and 3) via the citrate precursor method at different reacting atmospheres. Both the electronic-transport and magnetization measurements on these samples show well-defined phase transitions at temperatures between 135 K and 165 K. These transition temperatures, the room-temperature resistivities, as well as the changes of the Pauli-paramagnetic susceptibilities at the respective phase transitions, strongly correlate with the Goldschmidt tolerance factor t, irre…
The combination of charge and spin degrees of freedom with electronic correlations in condensed matter systems leads to a rich array of phenomena, such as magnetism, superconductivity, and novel conduction mechanisms. While such phenomena are observed in bulk materials, a richer array of behaviors becomes possible when these degrees of freedom are controlled in atomically layered heterostructures, where one can constrain dimensionality and impose interfacial boundary conditions. Here, we unlock a host of unique, hidden electronic and magnetic phase transitions in NdNiO$_3$ while approaching th…
