Recently, superconductivity was discovered in the infinite layer of hole-doped nickelates NdNiO$_{2}$. Contrary to this, superconductivity in LaNiO$_{2}$ is still under debate. This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ approach. Increasing Coulomb interaction $U$ tends to shift the $f$ states away from the Fermi level. Surprisingly, independently of the position of $f$ states with respect to the Fermi energy, these states play an important role in the electronic band structure, which can be reflected in the modification of the NdNiO$_{2}$ effective models.
Based on the electronic band structure obtained from first principles DFT calculations, the opticalspectra of yttrium and neodymium nickelates are computed. We show that the results are in fairagreement with available experimental data. We clarify the electronic transitions at the origin of thefirst two peaks, highlighting the important role of transitions from t2g states neglected in previousmodels. We discuss the evolution of the optical spectra from small to large rare-earth cations andrelate the changes to the electronic band structure.
The consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting infinite-layer nickelates have been much debated. Here we show striking differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These 5 distinctions originate from the 4f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: they are absent for La3+, nonmagnetic for the Pr3+ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd3+ Kramer's doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be und…
For most metals, increasing temperature (T) or disorder will quicken electron scattering. This hypothesis informs the Drude model of electronic conductivity. However, for so-called bad metals this predicts scattering times so short as to conflict with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here we introduce the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO_3, R = rare earth) as a class of bad metals. We study SmNiO_3 thin films using infrared spectroscopy while varying T and disorder. We show that the interaction between lattice distortions and Ni-O bond covalence explains both the bad metal conduction and the ins…
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
A combination of density functional and dynamical mean field theory calculations are used to show that the remarkable metal-insulator transition in the rare earth nickelate perovskites arise from a site-selective Mott phase, in which the $d$-electrons on a half of the Ni ions are localized to form a fluctuating moment while the $d$-electrons on other Ni ions form a singlet with holes on the surrounding oxygen ions. The calculation reproduces key features observed in the nickelate materials, including an insulating gap in the paramagnetic state, a strong variation of static magnetic moments amo…
We show that charge ordered rare-earth nickelates of the type RNiO3 (R= Ho, Lu, Pr and Nd) are multiferroic with very large magnetically induced ferroelectric (FE) polarizations. This we determine from first principles electronic structure calculations. The emerging FE polarization is directly tied to the long-standing puzzle of which kind of magnetic ordering is present in this class of materials: its direction and size indicate the type of ground-state spin configuration that is realized. Vice versa, the small energy differences between the different magnetic orderings suggest that a chosen …
We present a theory describing the local electronic properties of the perovskite rare earth nickelates--materials which have negative charge transfer energies, strong O $2p$ -- Ni $3d$ covalence, and breathing mode lattice distortions at the origin of highly studied metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic ordering transitions. Utilizing a full orbital, full correlation double cluster approach, we find strong charge fluctuations in agreement with a bond disproportionation interpretation. The unique double cluster formulation permits the inclusion of necessary orbital degeneracies and Coulomb inte…
A microscopic model for the diluted spin-mixed compounds (R_xY_(1-x))_2BaNiO_5 (R=magnetic rare-earth) is studied using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). The ordering temperature is shown to be a universal function of the impurity concentration x and the intrinsic Ni-chain correlation length. An effective model for the critical modes is derived. The possibility of a quantum critical point driven by the rare earth-concentration and the existence of a Griffiths phase in the high dilution limit is investigated. Several possible experimental approaches to verify the results are put forward.
The prediction of high $T_c$ superconductivity in layers of LaNiO$_3$ through orbital engineering has led to extensive research efforts over the last fifteen years. During this period, a plethora of thin films and heterostructures based rare-earth nickelate family with perovskite structure has been synthesized and explored. In this short perspective, we briefly review the complexity of bulk $RE$NiO$_3$, spotlighting several recent findings of emergent phenomena in heterostructures containing the interface between $RE$NiO$_3$ and another transition metal oxide. Finally, we outline potentially i…
Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a metal-insulator transition accompanied by a structural distortion that breaks the symmetry between formerly equivalent Ni sites. The quantitative theoretical description of this coupled electronic-structural instability is extremely challenging. Here, we address this issue by simultaneously taking into account both structural and electronic degrees of freedom using a charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory, together with screened interaction parameters obtained from the constrained random phase approximatio…
The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hole doped NdNiO2, similar to CaCuO2, has received enormous attention. However, different from CaCuO2, RNiO2 (R = Nd, La) has itinerant electrons in the rare-earth spacer layer. Previous studies show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 and rare-earth-d orbitals is very weak and thus RNiO2 is still a promising analog of CaCuO2. Here, we perform first-principles calculations to show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons in RNiO2 is substantially stronger than previously thought. The dominant hybridizatio…
NiO6 octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are quantified using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction in scanning transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that maintaining oxygen octahedra connectivity across the interface controls the octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3 layers, their lattice parameters and their transport properties. Unlike films and layers that are connected on one side to the substrate, subsequent LaNiO3 layers in the superlattice exhibit a relaxation of octahedral tilts towards bulk values. This relaxation is facilitated by correlated tilts i…
We show that charge ordering (more precisely, two-sublattice bond disproportionation) in the rare earth nickelate perovskites is intimately related to a negative charge transfer energy. By adding an additional potential on the Ni d states we are able to vary the charge tranfer energy and compute relaxed structures within an ab-initio framework. We show that the difference in Ni-O bond lengths and the value of the ordered state magnetic moment correlate with the charge transfer energy and that the transition to the bond-disproportionated state occurs when the effective charge transfer energy be…
A full implementation of the $ab$ $initio$ density functional plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to perform total energy calculations and structural relaxations is proposed and implemented. The method is applied to the structural and metal-insulator transitions of the rare earth nickelate perovskites as a function of rare earth ion, pressure, and temperature. In contrast to previous DFT and DFT+$U$ theories, the present method accounts for the experimentally observed structure of $La$NiO$_3$ and the insulating nature of the other perovskites, and quantitatively reproduces th…
Deterministic control over the periodic geometrical arrangement of the constituent atoms is the backbone of the material properties, that along with the interactions define the electronic and magnetic ground state. Following this notion, a bilayer of a prototypical rare-earth nickelate, NdNiO$_3$, combined with a dielectric spacer, LaAlO$_3$, has been layered along the pseudo cubic [111] direction. The resulting artificial graphene-like Mott crystal with magnetic 3$d$ electrons has antiferromagnetic correlations. In addition, a combination of resonant X-ray linear dichroism measurements and \t…
The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite layer nickelates, RNiO2 (R = Nd, Pr, La) has garnered sustained interest in the field. A definitive picture of low-energy many-body states has not yet emerged. We provide new insights into the low-energy physics, based on our embedded dynamical mean-field theory calculations, and propose a correlation (U)-temperature (T) phase diagram. The key features are a low-T Fermi liquid (FL) phase, a high-T Curie-Weiss regime, and an antiferromagnetic phase in a narrow U-T region. We associate the onset of the FL phase with partial screening of N…
We present a systematic density functional theory (DFT) plus Hubbard $U$ study of structural trends and the stability of different magnetically ordered states across the rare-earth nickelate series, $R$NiO$_3$, with $R$ from Lu to La. In particular, we investigate how the magnetic order, the change of the rare-earth ion, and the Hubbard interaction $U$ are affecting the bond-length disproportionation between the nickel sites. Our results show that structural parameters can be obtained that are in very good agreement with present experimental data, and that DFT+$U$ is in principle able to captu…
Building upon the recent progress on the intriguing underlying physics for the newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates, in this article we review an examination of valence charge and spin excitations via multi-orbital Hubbard models as way to determine the fundamental building blocks for Hamiltonians that can describe the low energy properties of infinite-layer nickelates. We summarize key results from density-functional approaches, and apply them to the study of x-ray absorption to determine the valence ground states of infinite-layer nickelates in their parent form, and show that a fundam…
After decades of fundamental research, unconventional superconductivity has recently been demonstrated in rare-earth infinite-layer nickelates. The current view depicts these systems as a new category of superconducting materials, as they appear to be correlated metals with distinct multiband features in their phase diagram. Here, we provide an overview of the state of the art in this rapidly evolving topic.
The rare earth nickelates RNiO3 are metallic at high temperatures and insulating and magnetically ordered at low temperatures. The low temperature phase has been predicted to be type II multiferroic, i.e. ferroelectric and magnetic order are coupled and occur simultaneously. Confirmation of those ideas has been inhibited by the absence of experimental data on single crystals. Here we report on Raman spectroscopic data of RNiO3 single crystals (R = Y, Er, Ho, Dy, Sm, Nd) for temperatures between 10 K and 1000 K. Entering the magnetically ordered phase we observe the appearance of a large number…
Rare-earth nickelates R$^{3+}$Ni$^{3+}$O$_3$ (R=Lu-Pr, Y) show a striking metal-insulator transition in their bulk phase whose temperature can be tuned by the rare-earth radius. These compounds are also the parent phases of the newly identified infinite layer RNiO2 superconductors. Although intensive theoretical works have been devoted to understand the origin of the metal-insulator transition in the bulk, there have only been a few studies on the role of hole and electron doping by rare-earth substitutions in RNiO$_3$ materials. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional …
We report on the synthesis of ultrathin films of highly distorted EuNiO3 (ENO) grown by interrupted pulse laser epitaxy on YAlO3 (YAO) substrates. Through mapping the phase space of nickelate thin film epitaxy, the optimal growth temperatures were found to scale linearly with the Goldschmidt tolerance factor. Considering the gibbs energy of the expanding film, this empirical trend is discussed in terms of epitaxial stabilization and the escalation of the lattice energy due to lattice distortions and decreasing symmetry. These findings are fundamental to other complex oxide perovskites, and pro…
The electronic structure of transition metal oxides featuring correlated electrons can be rationalized within the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen framework. Following a brief description of the present paradigms of electronic behavior, we focus on the physics of rare earth nickelates as an archetype of complexity emerging within the charge transfer regime. The intriguing prospect of realizing the physics of high $T_c$ cuprates through heterostructuring resulted in a massive endeavor to epitaxially stabilize these materials in ultra-thin form. A plethora of new phenomena unfolded in such artificial struc…
The metal-insulator transitions and the intriguing physical properties of rare-earth perovskite nickelates have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of these materials remains elusive. Here, taking a NdNiO3 thin film as a representative example, we utilize a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies to resolve important aspects of the complex electronic structure of the rare-earth nickelates. The unusual coexistence of bound and continuum excitations observed in the RIXS spectra provides stro…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…

Resistances that exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, known as bad metal behavior, and non-Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of many strongly correlated materials. Here we establish the conditions that lead to bad metal and non-Fermi liquid phases in NdNiO3, which exhibits a prototype, bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. We show that resistance saturation is determined by the magnitude of the Ni eg orbital splitting, which can be tuned by strain in epitaxial films, causing the appearance of bad metal behavior under certain conditions. The results shed…
We analyze the electronic structure of different surface terminations for infinite-layer nickelates. Surface NiO$_2$ layers are found to be buckled, in contrast to planar bulk layers. While the rare-earth terminated surface fermiology is similar to the bulk limit of the nickelates, the NiO$_2$ terminated surface band structure is significantly altered, originating from the effect of absence of rare-earth atoms on the crystal field splitting. Contrary to the bulk Fermi surfaces, there are two Ni-$3d$ Fermi pockets, giving rise to enhanced spectral weight around the $\bar{\text{M}}$ point in the…
The rare-earth nickelates are a rich playground for transport properties, known to host non-Fermi liquid character, resistance saturation and metal-insulator transitions. We report a study of transport in LaNiO3 in the presence of tunable disorder induced by irradiation. While pristine LaNiO3 samples are metallic, highly irradiated samples show insulating behaviour at all temperatures. Using irradiation fluence as a tuning handle, we uncover an intermediate region hosting a metal-insulator transition. This transition falls within the Mott-Ioffe-Regel regime wherein the mean free path is compar…
We propose a simple theoretical description of the metal-insulator transition of rare-earth nickelates. The theory involves only two orbitals per nickel site, corresponding to the low-energy anti-bonding $e_g$ states. In the monoclinic insulating state, bond-length disproportionation splits the manifold of $e_g$ bands, corresponding to a modulation of the effective on-site energy. We show that, when subject to a local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and Hund's coupling $J$, the resulting bond-disproportionated state is a paramagnetic insulator for a wide range of interaction parameters. Furthermore, we …
We study the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of rare-earth nickelate films of varying composition and strain close to the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, TN. Two prominent peaks at 0.6 and 1.3 eV, which are characteristic of the insulating phase, display a small but significant increase in intensity when the material passes from para- to antiferromagnetic. This observation indicates the presence of a positive feedback between antiferromagnetic (AF) and bond disproportionation (BD) order. By analyzing the temperature dependence near TN, and using a Landau-type free-en…
Heterostructure engineering provides an efficient way to obtain several unconventional phases of LaNiO3, which is otherwise paramagnetic, metallic in bulk form. In this work, a new class of short periodic superlattices, consisting of LaNiO3 and EuNiO3 have been grown by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of structural symmetry mismatch on the electronic and magnetic behaviors. Synchrotron based soft and hard X-ray resonant scattering experiments have found that these heterostructures undergo simultaneous electronic and magnetic transitions. Most importantly, LaNiO3 with…
We report on tunneling measurements that reveal for the first time the evolution of the quasi-particle state density across the bandwidth controlled Mott metal to insulator transition in the rare earth perovskite nickelates. In this, a canonical class of transition metal oxides, we study in particular two materials close to the T=0 metal-insulator transition: NdNiO3 , an antiferromagnetic insulator, and LaNiO3, a correlated metal. We measure a sharp gap in NdNiO3, which has an insulating ground state, of ~ 30 meV. Remarkably, metallic LaNiO3 exhibits a pseudogap of the same order that presages…

We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of bulk rare-earth nickelates is accompanied by a simultaneous charge ordering (CO) transition. We have investigated low-frequency resistance fluctuations (noise) across the MIT and magnetic transition of [EuNiO$_3$/LaNiO$_3$] superlattices, where selective suppression of charge ordering has been achieved by mismatching the superlattice periodicity with the periodicity of charge ordering. We have observed that irrespective of the presence/absence of long-range CO, the noise magnitude is enhanced by several orders with strong non-1/$f$ ($f$ = frequency) comp…
We investigate the impact of electron-lattice coupling on the stability of various magnetic orders in rare-earth nickelates. We use the Hartree-Fock approximation, at zero temperature, to study an effective, two-band model with correlations characterized by a Hubbard $U$ and a Hund's $J$. This is coupled to breathing-mode distortions of the octahedral oxygen cages, described semi-classically, with a Holstein term. We analyze the effect of the various parameters on the resulting phase diagram, in particular on the charge disproportionation and on the magnetic order. We confirm that the coupling…
We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study a thin film of NdNiO$_3$, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and compressed NiO$_6$ octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both …
Using a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and DC transport measurements, we determine the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of NdNiO$_3$ and SmNiO$_{3}$ films. The optical spectra show the appearance of a characteristic two-peak structure in the near-infrared when the material passes from the metal to the insulator phase. Dynamical mean-field theory calculations confirm this two-peak structure, and allow to identify these spectral changes and the associated changes in the electronic structure. We demonstrate that the insulating phase in these compounds and the associat…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) remains among the most thoroughly studied phenomena in solid state physics, but the complexity of the phenomena, which usually involves cooperation of many degrees of freedom including orbitals, fluctuating local moments, magnetism, and the crystal structure, have resisted predictive ab-initio treatment. Here we develop ab-initio theoretical method for correlated electron materials, based on Dynamical Mean Field Theory, which can predict the change of the crystal structure across the MIT at finite temperature. This allows us to study the coupling between el…
This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy ran…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxide materials, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials. One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and indeed superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$. Undoped NdNiO$_2$ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ and is known as the 'infinite-layer' ($n = \infty$) nickelate. Here, we report the s…
Superconducting nickelates appear to be difficult to synthesize. Since the chemical reduction of ABO3 (A: rare earth; B transition metal) with CaH2 may result in both, ABO2 and ABO2H, we calculate the topotactic H binding energy by density functional theory (DFT). We find intercalating H is energetically favorable for LaNiO2 but not for Sr-doped NdNiO2. This has dramatic consequences for the electronic structure as determined by DFT+dynamical mean field theory: that of 3d9 LaNiO2 is similar to (doped) cuprates, 3d8 LaNiO2H is a two-orbital Mott insulator. Topotactical H might hence explain why…
We study a model for the metal-insulator (MI) transition in the rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_3$, based upon a negative charge transfer energy and coupling to a rock-salt like lattice distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Using exact diagonalization and the Hartree-Fock approximation we demonstrate that electrons couple strongly to these distortions. For small distortions the system is metallic, with ground state of predominantly $d^8\ligand$ character, where $\ligand$ denotes a ligand hole. For sufficiently large distortions ($δd_{\rm Ni-O} \sim 0.05 - 0.10Å$), however, a gap opens at the Fermi …
Motivated by the potential for cuprate-like superconductivity in monolayer rare-earth nickelate superlattices, we study the effects of crystal field splitting, lattice distortions and strain on the charge, magnetic, and orbital order in undoped two-dimensional (2D) nickelate monolayers $R$NiO$_3$. We use a two-band Hubbard model to describe the low-energy electron states, with correlations controlled by a effective Hubbard $U$ and Hund's $J$. The electrons are coupled to the octahedral breathing-mode lattice distortions. Treating the lattice semiclassically, we apply the Hartree-Fock approxima…
Coupled transitions between distinct ordered phases are important aspects behind the rich phase complexity of correlated oxides that hinders our understanding of the underlying phenomena. For this reason, fundamental control over complex transitions has become a leading motivation of the designer approach to materials. We have devised a series of new superlattices by combining a Mott insulator and a correlated metal to form ultra-short period superlattices, which allow one to disentangle the simultaneous orderings in $RE$NiO$_3$. Tailoring an incommensurate heterostructure period relative to t…
Interaction between the lattice and the orbital degrees of freedom not only makes rare-earth nickelates unusually "bad metal", but also introduces a temperature driven insulator-metal phase transition. Here we investigate this insulator-metal phase transition in thin films of $\mathrm{SmNiO_3}$ using the slow time dependent fluctuations (noise) in resistivity. The normalized magnitude of noise is found to be extremely large, being nearly eight orders of magnitude higher than thin films of common disordered metallic systems, and indicates electrical conduction via classical percolation in a spa…
The perovskite nickelates RNiO$_3$ (R: rare-earth) have been studied as potential multiferroic compounds. A certain degree of charge disproportionation in the Ni ions has been confirmed by high resolution synchrotron power diffraction: instead of the nominal Ni$^{3+}$ valence, they can have the mixed-valence state Ni$^{(3-δ)+}$ and Ni$^{(3+δ)+}$, though agreement has not been reached on the precise value of $δ$ (e.g. for NdNiO$_3$, $δ=0.0$ and $δ=0.29$ were reported). Also, the magnetic ground state is not yet clear: collinear and non-collinear Ni-O magnetic structures have been proposed to ex…
