This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy range can be estimated and "downfolded" into a low energy theory that would describe the relevant degrees of freedom on the $\sim 0.5$ eV scale and that could be solved to determine superconducting and spin and charge density wave phase boundaries, temperature-dependent resistivities, and dynamical susceptibilities.
We use first-principles calculations to find that in infinite-layer nickelates $R$NiO$_2$, the widely studied tetragonal $P4/mmm$ structure is only dynamically stable for early lanthanide elements $R$ = La-Sm. For late lanthanide elements $R$ = Eu-Lu, an imaginary phonon frequency appears at $A=(π,π,π)$ point. For those infinite-layer nickelates, condensation of this phonon mode into the $P4/mmm$ structure leads to a more energetically favorable $I4/mcm$ structure that is characterized by an out-of-phase rotation of "NiO$_4$ square". Special attention is given to two borderline cases: PmNiO$_2…
Out-of-plane bond-order phase, superconductivity, and their competition in the $t$-$J_\parallel$-$J_\perp$ model: Possible implications for bilayer nickelates
Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a remarkable metal-insulator transition accompanied by a structural transition associated with a lattice `breathing' mode. Using model considerations and first-principles calculations, we present a theory of this phase transition, which reveals the key role of the coupling between the electronic and lattice instabilities. We show that the transition is driven by the proximity to an electronic disproportionation instability which couples to the breathing mode, thus cooperatively driving the system into the insulating state. This allows us to identify two key contro…
To understand the superconductivity recently discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, we carried out LDA+DMFT (local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory) and magnetic force response calculations. The on-site correlation in Ni-$3d$ orbitals causes notable changes in the electronic structure. The calculated temperature-dependent susceptibility exhibits the Curie-Weiss behavior, indicating the localized character of its moment. From the low-frequency behavior of self-energy, we conclude that the undoped phase of this nickelate is Fermi-liquid-like contrary to cuprates. Intere…
We present an $\textit{ab initio}$ study of the excitonic states of a prototypical high-temperature superconductor La$_2$CuO$_4$ and compare them to the isostructural single-layer nickelate La$_2$NiO$_4$. Key difference in the low-energy electronic structure leads to very different excitonic behavior. Excitons in La$_2$CuO$_4$ are delocalized and can freely move in the CuO$_2$ plane without disturbing the antiferromagnetic order. In contrast, in La$_2$NiO$_4$ we find the low-lying excitonic states to be extremely localized, producing a nearly flat dispersion. The theoretically obtained exciton…
The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-δ Sr δ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical view point, this new class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil new physics in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund's coupling in Ni-d orbitals gives ris…

The influence of high electric fields on the charge stripe order in Nd1.67Sr0.33NiO4 was studied by means of simultaneous hard x-ray diffraction and electrical transport experiments. Direct measurements of the charge stripe satellite peaks in zero and high electric fields provide no evidence for a deformation or a sliding of the stripe lattice, which contradicts previous indications from non-linear conductance effects. By using the order parameter of a structural phase transition for instant sample temperature measurements, non-linear transport effects can be attributed to resistive heating. I…
The large antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in the parent high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors is believed to play a crucial role in pairing the superconducting carriers. The recent observation of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite-layer (IL-) NdNiO$_2$ brings to the fore the relevance of magnetic coupling in high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors, particularly because no magnetic ordering is observed in the undoped IL-NdNiO$_2$ unlike in parent copper oxides. Here, we investigate the electronic structure and the nature of magnetic exchange in IL-NdNiO$_2$ using state-of-the-art many-bod…
Modern extensions of density functional theory such as the density functional theory plus U and the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory require choices, including selection of variable (charge vs spin density) for the density functional and specification of the correlated subspace. This paper examines these issues in the context of the "plus U" extensions of density functional theory, in which additional correlations on specified correlated orbitals are treated using a Hartree-Fock approximation. Differences between using charge-only or spin-density-dependent exchange-co…
