The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-δ Sr δ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical view point, this new class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil new physics in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund's coupling in Ni-d orbitals gives rise to multiple signatures of Hund's metallic phase in Ni-eg orbitals. The proposed picture of the nickelates as an eg (two orbital) Hund's metal differs from the picture of the Fe-based superconductors as a five orbital Hund's metal as well as the picture of the cuprates as doped charge transfer insulators. Our finding unveils a new class of the Hunds metals and has potential implications for the broad range of correlated two orbital systems away from half-filling.
The status of nickelate superconductors in relation to cuprate high temperature superconductors is one of the concepts being discussed in high temperature superconductivity in correlated transition metal oxides. New additions to the class of infinite layer nickelates can provide essential input relating to connections or distinctions. A recently synthesized compound \bnoas, which contains isolated `infinite layer' NiO$_2$ planes, may lead to new insights. Our investigations have discovered that, at density functional theory mean field level, the ground state consists of an unusual $e_g$ single…
Interaction between the lattice and the orbital degrees of freedom not only makes rare-earth nickelates unusually "bad metal", but also introduces a temperature driven insulator-metal phase transition. Here we investigate this insulator-metal phase transition in thin films of $\mathrm{SmNiO_3}$ using the slow time dependent fluctuations (noise) in resistivity. The normalized magnitude of noise is found to be extremely large, being nearly eight orders of magnitude higher than thin films of common disordered metallic systems, and indicates electrical conduction via classical percolation in a spa…
We theoretically investigate the unconventional superconductivity in the newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ based on a two-band model. By analyzing the transport experiments, we propose that the doped holes dominantly enter the Ni $d_{xy}$ or/and $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ orbitals as charged carriers, and form a conducting band. Via the onsite Hund coupling, the doped holes are coupled to the Ni localized holes in the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbital band. We demonstrate that this two-band model could be further reduced to a Hund-Heisenberg model. Using the reduced model,…
We propose a simple theoretical description of the metal-insulator transition of rare-earth nickelates. The theory involves only two orbitals per nickel site, corresponding to the low-energy anti-bonding $e_g$ states. In the monoclinic insulating state, bond-length disproportionation splits the manifold of $e_g$ bands, corresponding to a modulation of the effective on-site energy. We show that, when subject to a local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and Hund's coupling $J$, the resulting bond-disproportionated state is a paramagnetic insulator for a wide range of interaction parameters. Furthermore, we …
Oxygen vacancy is intrinsically coupled with magnetic, electronic and transport properties of transition-metal oxide materials and directly determines their multifunctionality. Here, we demonstrate reversible control of oxygen content by post-annealing at temperature lower than 300 degree centigrade and realize the reversible metal-insulator transition in epitaxial NdNiO3 films. Importantly, over six orders of magnitude in the resistance modulation and a large change in optical band gap are demonstrated at room temperature without destroying the parent framework and changing the p-type conduct…

Three low-valence layered nickelates with general formula La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ ($δ$=0.0, 0.5, 1) are studied by ab initio techniques. Both the insulating and metallic limits are analyzed, together with the compound at the Mott transition ($δ$= 0.5; Ni$^{2+}$), that shows insulating behavior, with all Ni atoms in a S=1 high-spin state. The compound in the $δ$= 1 limit (La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$), with mean formal valence Ni$^{1.5+}$ and hence nominally metallic, nevertheless shows a correlated {\it molecular} insulating state, produced by the quantum confinement of the NiO$_2$ bilayers and the presenc…
We report on tunneling measurements that reveal for the first time the evolution of the quasi-particle state density across the bandwidth controlled Mott metal to insulator transition in the rare earth perovskite nickelates. In this, a canonical class of transition metal oxides, we study in particular two materials close to the T=0 metal-insulator transition: NdNiO3 , an antiferromagnetic insulator, and LaNiO3, a correlated metal. We measure a sharp gap in NdNiO3, which has an insulating ground state, of ~ 30 meV. Remarkably, metallic LaNiO3 exhibits a pseudogap of the same order that presages…
The metal-insulator transitions and the intriguing physical properties of rare-earth perovskite nickelates have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of these materials remains elusive. Here, taking a NdNiO3 thin film as a representative example, we utilize a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies to resolve important aspects of the complex electronic structure of the rare-earth nickelates. The unusual coexistence of bound and continuum excitations observed in the RIXS spectra provides stro…
The control of materials properties with light is a promising approach towards the realization of faster and smaller electronic devices. With phases that can be controlled via strain, pressure, chemical composition or dimensionality, nickelates are good candidates for the development of a new generation of high performance and low consumption devices. Here we analyze the photoinduced dynamics in a single crystalline NdNiO$_3$ film upon excitation across the electronic gap. Using time-resolved reflectivity and resonant x-ray diffraction, we show that the pump pulse induces an insulator-to-metal…
Since the discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R=La, Pr, Nd), great research efforts have been paid to unveil its underlying superconducting mechanism. However, the physical origin of the intriguing hole-doped superconductivity phase diagram, characterized by a superconductivity dome sandwiched between two weak insulators, is still unclear. Here, we present a microscopic theory for electronic structure of nickelates from a fundamental model-based perspective. We found that the appearance of weak insulator phase in lightly and heavily hole-doped regime is domina…
Heavily oxygen deficient NdNiO$_3$ (NNO) films, which are insulating due to electron localization, contain pristine regions that undergo a hidden metal-insulator transition. Increasing oxygen content increases the connectivity of the metallic regions and the metal-insulator transition is first revealed, upon reaching the percolation threshold, by the presence of hysteresis. Only upon further oxygenation is the global metallic state (with a change in the resistivity slope) eventually achieved. It is shown that sufficient oxygenation leads to linear temperature dependence of resistivity in the m…
Motivated by recent Fermi surface and transport measurements on LaNiO3, we study the Mott Metal-Insulator transitions of perovskite nickelates, with the chemical formula RNiO3, where R is a rare-earth ion. We introduce and study a minimal two-band model, which takes into account only the eg bands. In the weak to intermediate correlation limit, a Hartree-Fock analysis predicts charge and spin order consistent with experiments on R=Pr, Nd, driven by Fermi surface nesting. It also produces an interesting semi-metallic electronic state in the model when an ideal cubic structure is assumed. We also…
For most metals, increasing temperature (T) or disorder will quicken electron scattering. This hypothesis informs the Drude model of electronic conductivity. However, for so-called bad metals this predicts scattering times so short as to conflict with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here we introduce the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO_3, R = rare earth) as a class of bad metals. We study SmNiO_3 thin films using infrared spectroscopy while varying T and disorder. We show that the interaction between lattice distortions and Ni-O bond covalence explains both the bad metal conduction and the ins…
Ground-state properties of layered nickelates are investigated based on the orbital-degenerate Hubbard model coupled with lattice distortions, by using umerical techniques. The Néel state composed of spin S=1 ions is confirmed in the undoped limit x=0. At x=1/2, novel antiferromagnetic states, called CE- and E-type phases, are found by increasing the Hund's coupling. (3 x^2 - r^2 / 3 y^2 - r^2)-type orbital ordering is predicted to occur in a checkerboard-type charge-ordered state. At x=1/3, both Coulombic and phononic interactions are found to be important, since the former stabilizes the spi…
We investigate the crystal structure and the electronic properties of the trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ by means of quantum mechanical calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We find that, at low temperature, La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ undergoes a hitherto unreported structural phase transition and transforms to a new monoclinic $P2_1/a$ phase. This phase exhibits electronic properties in agreement with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data reported in H.\ Li \emph{et al}., Nat.\ Commun.\ \textbf{8}, 704 (2017) and should be considered in models focu…
Layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy has been used to synthesize cuprate-nickelate multilayer structures of composition (La$_2$CuO$_4$)$_m$/LaO/(LaNiO$_3$)$_n$. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that these structures allow a clean separation of dopant and doped layers. Specifically, the LaO layer separating cuprate and nickelate blocks provides an additional charge that, according to density functional theory calculations, is predominantly accommodated in the interfacial nickelate layers. This is reflected in an elongation of bond distances and changes in valence…
We study a model for the metal-insulator (MI) transition in the rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_3$, based upon a negative charge transfer energy and coupling to a rock-salt like lattice distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Using exact diagonalization and the Hartree-Fock approximation we demonstrate that electrons couple strongly to these distortions. For small distortions the system is metallic, with ground state of predominantly $d^8\ligand$ character, where $\ligand$ denotes a ligand hole. For sufficiently large distortions ($δd_{\rm Ni-O} \sim 0.05 - 0.10Å$), however, a gap opens at the Fermi …

Nickelates are a rich class of materials, ranging from insulating magnets to superconductors. But for stoichiometric materials, insulating behavior is the norm, as for most late transition metal oxides. Notable exceptions are the 3D perovskite LaNiO$_3$, an unconventional paramagnetic metal, and the layered Ruddlesden-Popper phases R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, (R=La, Pr, Nd). The latter are particularly intriguing because they exhibit an unusual metal-to-metal transition. Here, we demonstrate that this transition results from an incommensurate density wave with both charge and magnetic character that …
A full implementation of the $ab$ $initio$ density functional plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to perform total energy calculations and structural relaxations is proposed and implemented. The method is applied to the structural and metal-insulator transitions of the rare earth nickelate perovskites as a function of rare earth ion, pressure, and temperature. In contrast to previous DFT and DFT+$U$ theories, the present method accounts for the experimentally observed structure of $La$NiO$_3$ and the insulating nature of the other perovskites, and quantitatively reproduces th…
Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a remarkable metal-insulator transition accompanied by a structural transition associated with a lattice `breathing' mode. Using model considerations and first-principles calculations, we present a theory of this phase transition, which reveals the key role of the coupling between the electronic and lattice instabilities. We show that the transition is driven by the proximity to an electronic disproportionation instability which couples to the breathing mode, thus cooperatively driving the system into the insulating state. This allows us to identify two key contro…
Superconductivity with a remarkably high $T_c$ has recently been found in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$ thin films. While this system bears strong similarities to the cuprates, some differences, such as a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and possible high-spin moments on the doped Ni sites have been pointed out. Here, we investigate the effect of Hund coupling and crystal field splitting in a simple model system and argue that a multiorbital description of nickelate superconductors is warranted, especially in the strongly hole-doped regime. We then look at this system from the viewpoint of the …
The material class of rare earth nickelates with high Ni$^{3+}$ oxidation state is generating continued interest due to the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition with charge order and the appearance of non-collinear magnetic phases within this insulating regime. The recent theoretical prediction for superconductivity in LaNiO$_3$ thin films has also triggered intensive research efforts. LaNiO$_3$ seems to be the only rare earth nickelate that stays metallic and paramagnetic down to lowest temperatures. So far, centimetre-sized impurity-free single crystal growth has not been reported for …
The electronic structure of transition metal oxides featuring correlated electrons can be rationalized within the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen framework. Following a brief description of the present paradigms of electronic behavior, we focus on the physics of rare earth nickelates as an archetype of complexity emerging within the charge transfer regime. The intriguing prospect of realizing the physics of high $T_c$ cuprates through heterostructuring resulted in a massive endeavor to epitaxially stabilize these materials in ultra-thin form. A plethora of new phenomena unfolded in such artificial struc…
Coupled transitions between distinct ordered phases are important aspects behind the rich phase complexity of correlated oxides that hinders our understanding of the underlying phenomena. For this reason, fundamental control over complex transitions has become a leading motivation of the designer approach to materials. We have devised a series of new superlattices by combining a Mott insulator and a correlated metal to form ultra-short period superlattices, which allow one to disentangle the simultaneous orderings in $RE$NiO$_3$. Tailoring an incommensurate heterostructure period relative to t…
Dynamical mean field methods are used to calculate the phase diagram, many-body density of states, relative orbital occupancy and Fermi surface shape for a realistic model of $LaNiO_3$-based superlattices. The model is derived from density functional band calculations and includes oxygen orbitals. The combination of the on-site Hunds interaction and charge-transfer between the transition metal and the oxygen orbitals is found to reduce the orbital polarization far below the levels predicted either by band structure calculations or by many-body analyses of Hubbard-type models which do not expli…
Ab initio calculations predict a metal-insulator transition at zero temperature to occur in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ at moderate pressures as a result of a pressure-induced spin-state transition. The spin-state transition that is seen at 105 K at ambient pressure from a low-temperature high-spin state to a high-temperature low-spin state has been observed to be shifted to lower temperatures as pressure is applied. From our calculations we find that a smaller unit cell volume favors the metallic low-spin state, which becomes more stable at 5 GPa. Similar physics should take place in the related compou…
Resistances that exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, known as bad metal behavior, and non-Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of many strongly correlated materials. Here we establish the conditions that lead to bad metal and non-Fermi liquid phases in NdNiO3, which exhibits a prototype, bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. We show that resistance saturation is determined by the magnitude of the Ni eg orbital splitting, which can be tuned by strain in epitaxial films, causing the appearance of bad metal behavior under certain conditions. The results shed…
We study low temperature properties of the Hubbard model for the bismuth nickelate, where degenerate orbitals in the nickel ions and a single orbital in the bismuth ions are taken into account, combining dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We discuss the effect of the attractive interactions to mimic the valence skipping phenomenon in the bismuth ions. We demonstrate how the charge and magnetically ordered states are stable against thermal fluctuations. It is furthermore clarified that the ferromagnetically ordered and orbital ordered states are sta…
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
Low-valent nickelates R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ (R = rare earth) containing Ni$^{1+}$ (d$^{9}$) with a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) square planar coordination geometry possess structural and electronic properties that are similar to those of high-Tc cuprates, including superconductivity itself in the doped infinite layer ($n = \infty$) RNiO$_2$ system. Within this R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ nickelate family, the crystallographic isomorphs Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ exhibit singularly different ground states: Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is metallic and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is a charge- and s…
We report a density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of an oxide heterostructure of LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) bilayers in [111] direction interleaved with four atomic monolayers of LaAlO$_3$. DFT+$U$ optimizations yield two stable solutions: a uniform structure with equivalent NiO$_6$ octahedra, as well as a bond-disproportionated (BD) structure featuring a breathing distortion. For both structures, we construct the low-energy models describing the Ni $e_g$ states by means of Wannier projections supplemented by the Kanamori interaction, and solve them by DMFT. Using th…
High temperature cuprate superconductivity remains a defining problem in condensed matter physics. Among myriad approaches to addressing this problem has been the study of alternative transition metal oxides with similar structures and 3d electron count that are suggested as proxies for cuprate physics. None of these analogs has been superconducting, and few are even metallic. Here, we report that the low-valent, quasi-two-dimensional trilayer compound, Pr4Ni3O8 avoids a charge-stripe ordered phase previously reported for La4Ni3O8, leading to a metallic ground state. By combining x-ray absorpt…
Using first-principles calculations, we analyze the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R= rare-earth) as R changes across the lanthanide series from La to Lu. By correlating these changes with in-plane and out-of-plane lattice parameter reductions, we conclude that the in-plane Ni-O distance is the relevant control parameter in infinite-layer nickelates. An antiferromagnetic ground state is obtained for all RNiO$_2$ (R=La-Lu). This antiferromagnetic state remains metallic across the lanthanide series and is defined by a multiorb…
We present a theory describing the local electronic properties of the perovskite rare earth nickelates--materials which have negative charge transfer energies, strong O $2p$ -- Ni $3d$ covalence, and breathing mode lattice distortions at the origin of highly studied metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic ordering transitions. Utilizing a full orbital, full correlation double cluster approach, we find strong charge fluctuations in agreement with a bond disproportionation interpretation. The unique double cluster formulation permits the inclusion of necessary orbital degeneracies and Coulomb inte…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RE$_{1-δ}$Sr$_δ$NiO$_2$ (RE$=$Nd, Pr), we study the role of Hund's coupling $J$ in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model which has been on the periphery of the attention. A region of negative effective Coulomb interaction of this model is revealed to be differentiated from three- and five-orbital models in their typical Hund's metal active fillings. We identify distinctive regimes including four different correlated metals, one of which stems from the proximity to a Mott insulator while the other three, wh…
The correlated electronic structure of the infinite-layer compounds NdNiO$_2$ and SrCuO$_2$ at stoichiometry and with finite hole doping is compared. Key differences are elucidated from an advanced first-principles many-body perspective. Contrary to the charge-transfer insulating cuprate, the self-doped nickelate remains non-insulating even for large interaction strength, though the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ spectral weight is also gapped in that limit. Hybridization between Ni$(3d)$ and Nd$(5d)$ is crucial for the appearance of the self-doping band. Upon realistic hole doping, Sr$_{1-y}$CuO$_2$ shows …
Charge dynamics and its critical behavior are investigated near the metal-insulator transition of layered-nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu). The polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment clearly shows the multi-orbital nature which enables the x2-y2-orbital-based checkerboard-type charge ordering or correlation to persist up to the critical doping region (x sim 1). In the barely metallic region proximate to the charge-ordered insulating phase, the nominal carrier density estimated from the Hall coefficient markedly decreases in accord with development of the pseudogap structure in the …
Nucleation processes of mixed-phase states are an intrinsic characteristic of first-order phase transitions, typically related to local symmetry breaking. Direct observation of emerging mixed-phase regions in materials showing a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) offers unique opportunities to uncover their driving mechanism. Using photoemission electron microscopy, we image the nanoscale formation and growth of insulating domains across the temperature-driven MIT in NdNiO3 epitaxial thin films. Heteroepitaxy is found to strongly determine the nanoscale nature of the phase transition…
We discuss heat transport in hole-doped manganites, nickelates and cuprates for which real-space charge ordering has been observed. We survey the thermal transport response to charge order in the various materials and the associated structural modifications, particularly distortions of the metal-oxygen polyhedra associated with localized charge, that may be a principal source of phonon damping.
The rare-earth nickelates are a rich playground for transport properties, known to host non-Fermi liquid character, resistance saturation and metal-insulator transitions. We report a study of transport in LaNiO3 in the presence of tunable disorder induced by irradiation. While pristine LaNiO3 samples are metallic, highly irradiated samples show insulating behaviour at all temperatures. Using irradiation fluence as a tuning handle, we uncover an intermediate region hosting a metal-insulator transition. This transition falls within the Mott-Ioffe-Regel regime wherein the mean free path is compar…
We investigate the ground state properties of electronic models for doped manganites and nickelates. An effective t - J like Hamiltonian is derived from the case of strong Hund coupling between the conduction electrons and localized spins by means of the projection technique. An attractive interaction for conduction electrons and an anti-ferromagnetic coupling of the localized spin are obtained. A large ratio of the attraction to effective electron hopping, which is modulated by the spin background, will lead to the phase separation. The anti-ferromagnetic phase and the phase separation appear…
Motivated by the potential for cuprate-like superconductivity in monolayer rare-earth nickelate superlattices, we study the effects of crystal field splitting, lattice distortions and strain on the charge, magnetic, and orbital order in undoped two-dimensional (2D) nickelate monolayers $R$NiO$_3$. We use a two-band Hubbard model to describe the low-energy electron states, with correlations controlled by a effective Hubbard $U$ and Hund's $J$. The electrons are coupled to the octahedral breathing-mode lattice distortions. Treating the lattice semiclassically, we apply the Hartree-Fock approxima…
The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
