The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of bulk rare-earth nickelates is accompanied by a simultaneous charge ordering (CO) transition. We have investigated low-frequency resistance fluctuations (noise) across the MIT and magnetic transition of [EuNiO$_3$/LaNiO$_3$] superlattices, where selective suppression of charge ordering has been achieved by mismatching the superlattice periodicity with the periodicity of charge ordering. We have observed that irrespective of the presence/absence of long-range CO, the noise magnitude is enhanced by several orders with strong non-1/$f$ ($f$ = frequency) component when the system undergoes MIT and magnetic transition. The higher order statistics of resistance fluctuations reveal the presence of strong non-Gaussian components in both cases, further indicating inhomogeneous electrical transport arising from the electronic phase separation. Specifically, we find almost three orders of magnitude smaller noise in the insulating phase of the sample without long-range CO compared to the sample with CO. These findings suggest that digital synthesis can be a potential route to implement electronic transitions of complex oxides for device application.
Reduced dimensionality and strong electronic correlations, which are among the most important ingredients for cupratelike high-Tc superconductivity, characterize also the physics of nickelate-based heterostructures. Starting from the local-density approximation we arrive at a simple two-band model for quasi-two-dimensional 2D LaNiO3 /LaAlO3 heterostructures and extend it by introducing an appropriate hopping in the z direction to describe the dimensional crossover to three dimensions 3D. Using dynamical mean-field theory, we study the effects of electronic correlations with increasing interact…
Layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy has been used to synthesize cuprate-nickelate multilayer structures of composition (La$_2$CuO$_4$)$_m$/LaO/(LaNiO$_3$)$_n$. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that these structures allow a clean separation of dopant and doped layers. Specifically, the LaO layer separating cuprate and nickelate blocks provides an additional charge that, according to density functional theory calculations, is predominantly accommodated in the interfacial nickelate layers. This is reflected in an elongation of bond distances and changes in valence…
We study the optical conductivity in doped nickelates, and find the dramatic difference of the spectrum in the gap ($ω$$\alt$4 eV) between one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nickelates. The difference is shown to be caused by the dependence of hopping integral on dimensionality. The theoretical results explain consistently the experimental data in 1D and 2D nickelates, Y$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$BaNiO$_5$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$, respectively. The relation between the spectrum in the X-ray aborption experiments and the optical conductivity in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ is discussed.
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate the electronic origin of orbital polarization in nickelate heterostructures taking $\mathrm{LaTiO_3-LaNiO_3-3x(LaAlO_3)}$, a system with exceptionally large polarization, as a model system. We find that heterostructuring generates only minor changes in the Ni $3d$ orbital energy levels, contradicting the often-invoked picture in which changes in orbital energy levels generate orbital polarization. Instead, O $K$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that orbital polarization is caused by an anisotropic reconstruction of the o…
The electronic structure of transition metal oxides featuring correlated electrons can be rationalized within the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen framework. Following a brief description of the present paradigms of electronic behavior, we focus on the physics of rare earth nickelates as an archetype of complexity emerging within the charge transfer regime. The intriguing prospect of realizing the physics of high $T_c$ cuprates through heterostructuring resulted in a massive endeavor to epitaxially stabilize these materials in ultra-thin form. A plethora of new phenomena unfolded in such artificial struc…
We investigate THz conductivity dynamics in NdNiO$_3$ and EuNiO$_3$ thin films following a photoinduced thermal quench into the metallic state and reveal a clear contrast between first- and second-order dynamics. While in EuNiO$_3$ the conductivity recovers exponentially, in NdNiO$_3$ the recovery is non-exponential and slower than a simple thermal model. Crucially, it is consistent with first-order dynamics and well-described by a 2d Avrami model, with supercooling leading to metastable phase coexistence. The large transients seen in our films are promising for fast electronic (and magnetic) …
The prediction of high $T_c$ superconductivity in layers of LaNiO$_3$ through orbital engineering has led to extensive research efforts over the last fifteen years. During this period, a plethora of thin films and heterostructures based rare-earth nickelate family with perovskite structure has been synthesized and explored. In this short perspective, we briefly review the complexity of bulk $RE$NiO$_3$, spotlighting several recent findings of emergent phenomena in heterostructures containing the interface between $RE$NiO$_3$ and another transition metal oxide. Finally, we outline potentially i…
Interaction between the lattice and the orbital degrees of freedom not only makes rare-earth nickelates unusually "bad metal", but also introduces a temperature driven insulator-metal phase transition. Here we investigate this insulator-metal phase transition in thin films of $\mathrm{SmNiO_3}$ using the slow time dependent fluctuations (noise) in resistivity. The normalized magnitude of noise is found to be extremely large, being nearly eight orders of magnitude higher than thin films of common disordered metallic systems, and indicates electrical conduction via classical percolation in a spa…
Heterostructure engineering provides an efficient way to obtain several unconventional phases of LaNiO3, which is otherwise paramagnetic, metallic in bulk form. In this work, a new class of short periodic superlattices, consisting of LaNiO3 and EuNiO3 have been grown by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of structural symmetry mismatch on the electronic and magnetic behaviors. Synchrotron based soft and hard X-ray resonant scattering experiments have found that these heterostructures undergo simultaneous electronic and magnetic transitions. Most importantly, LaNiO3 with…
We have used resonant x-ray diffraction to develop a detailed description of antiferromagnetic ordering in epitaxial superlattices based on two-unit-cell thick layers of the strongly correlated metal LaNiO3. We also report reference experiments on thin films of PrNiO3 and NdNiO3. The resulting data indicate a spiral state whose polarization plane can be controlled by adjusting the Ni d-orbital occupation via two independent mechanisms: epitaxial strain and quantum confinement of the valence electrons. The data are discussed in the light of recent theoretical predictions.
For most metals, increasing temperature (T) or disorder will quicken electron scattering. This hypothesis informs the Drude model of electronic conductivity. However, for so-called bad metals this predicts scattering times so short as to conflict with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here we introduce the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO_3, R = rare earth) as a class of bad metals. We study SmNiO_3 thin films using infrared spectroscopy while varying T and disorder. We show that the interaction between lattice distortions and Ni-O bond covalence explains both the bad metal conduction and the ins…
We present a combined study of Ni $K$-edge resonant x-ray scattering and density functional calculations to probe and distinguish electronically driven ordering and lattice distortions in nickelate heterostructures. We demonstrate that due to the low crystal symmetry, contributions from structural distortions can contribute significantly to the energy-dependent Bragg peak intensities of a bond-ordered NdNiO$_3$ reference film. For a LaNiO$_3$-LaAlO$_3$ superlattice that exhibits magnetic order, we establish a rigorous upper bound on the bond-order parameter. We thus conclusively confirm predic…
Using the local density approximation and its combination with dynamical mean-field theory, we show that electronic correlations induce a single-sheet, cuprate-like Fermi surface for hole-doped 1/1 LaNiO3 /LaAlO3 heterostructures, even though both eg orbitals contribute to it. The Ni 3d 3z^2-1 orbital plays the role of the axial Cu 4s-like orbital in the cuprates. These two results indicate that "orbital engineering" by means of heterostructuring should be possible. As we also find strong antiferromagnetic correlations, the low-energy electronic and spin excitations in nickelate heterostructur…
Deterministic control over the periodic geometrical arrangement of the constituent atoms is the backbone of the material properties, that along with the interactions define the electronic and magnetic ground state. Following this notion, a bilayer of a prototypical rare-earth nickelate, NdNiO$_3$, combined with a dielectric spacer, LaAlO$_3$, has been layered along the pseudo cubic [111] direction. The resulting artificial graphene-like Mott crystal with magnetic 3$d$ electrons has antiferromagnetic correlations. In addition, a combination of resonant X-ray linear dichroism measurements and \t…
Transition metal based oxide heterostructures exhibit diverse emergent phenomena e.g. two dimensional electron gas, superconductivity, non-collinear magnetic phase, ferroelectricity, polar vortices, topological Hall effect etc., which are absent in the constituent bulk oxides. The microscopic understandings of these properties in such nanometer thick materials are extremely challenging. Synchrotron x-ray based techniques such as x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant x-ray scattering (RXS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, …
Perovskite nickelate heterostructure consisting of single unit cell of EuNiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ have been grown on a set of single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on electronic and magnetic properties at the extreme interface limit. Despite the variation of substrate in-plane lattice constants and lattice symmetry, the structural response to heterostructuring is primarily controlled by the presence of EuNiO$_3$ layer. In sharp contrast to bulk LaNiO$_3$ or EuNiO$_3$, the superlattices grown under tensile strains exhibit me…
We present a general methodology that enables the disentanglement of the electronic and lattice contributions to the metal-insulator transition by building an energy landscape from numerical solutions of the equation of state. The methodology works with any electronic structure method that provides electronic expectation values at given atomic positions. Applying the theory to rare-earth perovskite nickelates ($R$NiO$_3$) and Ruddlesden-Popper calcium ruthenates (Ca$_2$RuO$_4$) in bulk, heterostructure and epitaxially strained thin film forms using equation of state results from density functi…
We study the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of rare-earth nickelate films of varying composition and strain close to the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, TN. Two prominent peaks at 0.6 and 1.3 eV, which are characteristic of the insulating phase, display a small but significant increase in intensity when the material passes from para- to antiferromagnetic. This observation indicates the presence of a positive feedback between antiferromagnetic (AF) and bond disproportionation (BD) order. By analyzing the temperature dependence near TN, and using a Landau-type free-en…
Coupled transitions between distinct ordered phases are important aspects behind the rich phase complexity of correlated oxides that hinders our understanding of the underlying phenomena. For this reason, fundamental control over complex transitions has become a leading motivation of the designer approach to materials. We have devised a series of new superlattices by combining a Mott insulator and a correlated metal to form ultra-short period superlattices, which allow one to disentangle the simultaneous orderings in $RE$NiO$_3$. Tailoring an incommensurate heterostructure period relative to t…
Using a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and DC transport measurements, we determine the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of NdNiO$_3$ and SmNiO$_{3}$ films. The optical spectra show the appearance of a characteristic two-peak structure in the near-infrared when the material passes from the metal to the insulator phase. Dynamical mean-field theory calculations confirm this two-peak structure, and allow to identify these spectral changes and the associated changes in the electronic structure. We demonstrate that the insulating phase in these compounds and the associat…
We report a density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of an oxide heterostructure of LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) bilayers in [111] direction interleaved with four atomic monolayers of LaAlO$_3$. DFT+$U$ optimizations yield two stable solutions: a uniform structure with equivalent NiO$_6$ octahedra, as well as a bond-disproportionated (BD) structure featuring a breathing distortion. For both structures, we construct the low-energy models describing the Ni $e_g$ states by means of Wannier projections supplemented by the Kanamori interaction, and solve them by DMFT. Using th…
We used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$ edge to simultaneously investigate high-energy interband transitions characteristic of Ni-O bond ordering and low-energy collective excitations of the Ni spins in the rare-earth nickelates $R$NiO$_3$ ($R$ = Nd, Pr, La) with pseudocubic perovskite structure. With the support of calculations based on a double-cluster model we quantify bond order (BO) amplitudes for different thin films and heterostructures and discriminate short-range BO fluctuations from long-range static order. Moreover we investigate magnetic o…
NiO6 octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are quantified using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction in scanning transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that maintaining oxygen octahedra connectivity across the interface controls the octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3 layers, their lattice parameters and their transport properties. Unlike films and layers that are connected on one side to the substrate, subsequent LaNiO3 layers in the superlattice exhibit a relaxation of octahedral tilts towards bulk values. This relaxation is facilitated by correlated tilts i…
Formation of charge-density-waves in ordered electronic phases (such as charge-order) is an emergent phenomenon in the perovskite class of correlated oxides. This scenario is visualized to prevail in exotic RNiO3 (R=rare-earth) nickelates in which the structure controls the incipient charge-order to form in weak localization limit. However, any consequent effect demonstrating these nickelates in rare category of charge-density-waves conductors with controlled charge-lattice interactions has been a fundamental challenge so-far. Here, we present first evidence of the charge-density-waves in a pr…
Charge dynamics and its critical behavior are investigated near the metal-insulator transition of layered-nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu). The polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment clearly shows the multi-orbital nature which enables the x2-y2-orbital-based checkerboard-type charge ordering or correlation to persist up to the critical doping region (x sim 1). In the barely metallic region proximate to the charge-ordered insulating phase, the nominal carrier density estimated from the Hall coefficient markedly decreases in accord with development of the pseudogap structure in the …
We investigate the low temperature structural and physical properties of the trilayer nickelates R4Ni3O10 (R = La, Pr and Nd) using resistivity, thermopower, thermal conductivity, specific heat, high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and thermal expansion experiments. We show that all three compounds crystallize with a monoclinic symmetry, and undergo a metal-to-metal (MMT) transition at 135 K (La), 156 K (Pr) and 160 K (Nd). At MMT, the lattice parameters show distinct anomalies; however, without any lowering of the lattice symmetry. Unambiguous signatures of MMT are also seen i…
The origin of simultaneous electronic, structural and magnetic transitions in bulk rare-earth nickelates ($RE$NiO$_3$) remains puzzling with multiple conflicting reports on the nature of these entangled phase transitions. Heterostructure engineering of these materials offers unique opportunity to decouple metal-insulator transition (MIT) from the magnetic transition. However, the evolution of underlying electronic properties across these decoupled transitions remains largely unexplored. In order to address this, we have measured Hall effect on a series of epitaxial NdNiO$_3$ films, spanning a …

We report on the results of investigation the conductivity and magnetoresistance (MR) temperature dependencies for the two strained multilayer p-type Ge/Ge_{1-x}Si_x heterostructures. The usual logarithmic temperature dependencies for zero magnetic field conductivity due to the weak localization (WL) and electron- electron interaction (EEI) effects take place in both samples. For one of the samples the negative MR is observed in a whole range of magnetic fields up to ~1T at T <=12K, but for the other sample the MR transforms from the negative to positive at B >= 0.2T and T >=1.3K. We attribute…

Nickel-based complex oxides have served as a playground for decades in the quest for a copper-oxide analog of the high-temperature superconductivity. They may provide clues towards understanding the mechanism and an alternative route for high-temperature superconductors. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate thin films has fulfilled this pursuit. However, material synthesis remains challenging, direct demonstration of perfect diamagnetism is still missing, and understanding of the role of the interface and bulk to the superconducting properties is still lack…
We report a double-layer electronic system made of two closely-spaced but electrically isolated graphene monolayers sandwiched in boron nitride. For large carrier densities in one of the layers, the adjacent layer no longer exhibits a minimum metallic conductivity at the neutrality point, and its resistivity diverges at low temperatures. This divergence can be suppressed by magnetic field or by reducing the carrier density in the adjacent layer. We believe that the observed localization is intrinsic for neutral graphene with generic disorder if metallic electron-hole puddles are screened out.
