Based on the electronic band structure obtained from first principles DFT calculations, the opticalspectra of yttrium and neodymium nickelates are computed. We show that the results are in fairagreement with available experimental data. We clarify the electronic transitions at the origin of thefirst two peaks, highlighting the important role of transitions from t2g states neglected in previousmodels. We discuss the evolution of the optical spectra from small to large rare-earth cations andrelate the changes to the electronic band structure.
For most metals, increasing temperature (T) or disorder will quicken electron scattering. This hypothesis informs the Drude model of electronic conductivity. However, for so-called bad metals this predicts scattering times so short as to conflict with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here we introduce the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO_3, R = rare earth) as a class of bad metals. We study SmNiO_3 thin films using infrared spectroscopy while varying T and disorder. We show that the interaction between lattice distortions and Ni-O bond covalence explains both the bad metal conduction and the ins…
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
A combination of density functional and dynamical mean field theory calculations are used to show that the remarkable metal-insulator transition in the rare earth nickelate perovskites arise from a site-selective Mott phase, in which the $d$-electrons on a half of the Ni ions are localized to form a fluctuating moment while the $d$-electrons on other Ni ions form a singlet with holes on the surrounding oxygen ions. The calculation reproduces key features observed in the nickelate materials, including an insulating gap in the paramagnetic state, a strong variation of static magnetic moments amo…
We show that charge ordered rare-earth nickelates of the type RNiO3 (R= Ho, Lu, Pr and Nd) are multiferroic with very large magnetically induced ferroelectric (FE) polarizations. This we determine from first principles electronic structure calculations. The emerging FE polarization is directly tied to the long-standing puzzle of which kind of magnetic ordering is present in this class of materials: its direction and size indicate the type of ground-state spin configuration that is realized. Vice versa, the small energy differences between the different magnetic orderings suggest that a chosen …
We present a theory describing the local electronic properties of the perovskite rare earth nickelates--materials which have negative charge transfer energies, strong O $2p$ -- Ni $3d$ covalence, and breathing mode lattice distortions at the origin of highly studied metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic ordering transitions. Utilizing a full orbital, full correlation double cluster approach, we find strong charge fluctuations in agreement with a bond disproportionation interpretation. The unique double cluster formulation permits the inclusion of necessary orbital degeneracies and Coulomb inte…
The prediction of high $T_c$ superconductivity in layers of LaNiO$_3$ through orbital engineering has led to extensive research efforts over the last fifteen years. During this period, a plethora of thin films and heterostructures based rare-earth nickelate family with perovskite structure has been synthesized and explored. In this short perspective, we briefly review the complexity of bulk $RE$NiO$_3$, spotlighting several recent findings of emergent phenomena in heterostructures containing the interface between $RE$NiO$_3$ and another transition metal oxide. Finally, we outline potentially i…
Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a metal-insulator transition accompanied by a structural distortion that breaks the symmetry between formerly equivalent Ni sites. The quantitative theoretical description of this coupled electronic-structural instability is extremely challenging. Here, we address this issue by simultaneously taking into account both structural and electronic degrees of freedom using a charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory, together with screened interaction parameters obtained from the constrained random phase approximatio…
NiO6 octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are quantified using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction in scanning transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that maintaining oxygen octahedra connectivity across the interface controls the octahedral tilts in the LaNiO3 layers, their lattice parameters and their transport properties. Unlike films and layers that are connected on one side to the substrate, subsequent LaNiO3 layers in the superlattice exhibit a relaxation of octahedral tilts towards bulk values. This relaxation is facilitated by correlated tilts i…
The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite layer nickelates, RNiO2 (R = Nd, Pr, La) has garnered sustained interest in the field. A definitive picture of low-energy many-body states has not yet emerged. We provide new insights into the low-energy physics, based on our embedded dynamical mean-field theory calculations, and propose a correlation (U)-temperature (T) phase diagram. The key features are a low-T Fermi liquid (FL) phase, a high-T Curie-Weiss regime, and an antiferromagnetic phase in a narrow U-T region. We associate the onset of the FL phase with partial screening of N…
We present a systematic density functional theory (DFT) plus Hubbard $U$ study of structural trends and the stability of different magnetically ordered states across the rare-earth nickelate series, $R$NiO$_3$, with $R$ from Lu to La. In particular, we investigate how the magnetic order, the change of the rare-earth ion, and the Hubbard interaction $U$ are affecting the bond-length disproportionation between the nickel sites. Our results show that structural parameters can be obtained that are in very good agreement with present experimental data, and that DFT+$U$ is in principle able to captu…
Rare-earth nickelates R$^{3+}$Ni$^{3+}$O$_3$ (R=Lu-Pr, Y) show a striking metal-insulator transition in their bulk phase whose temperature can be tuned by the rare-earth radius. These compounds are also the parent phases of the newly identified infinite layer RNiO2 superconductors. Although intensive theoretical works have been devoted to understand the origin of the metal-insulator transition in the bulk, there have only been a few studies on the role of hole and electron doping by rare-earth substitutions in RNiO$_3$ materials. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional …
The properties of AMO3 perovskite oxides, where M is a 3d transition metal, depend strongly on the level of covalency between the metal d and oxygen p orbitals. With their complex spin orders and metal-insulator transition, rare-earth nickelates verge between dominantly ionic and covalent characters. Accordingly, the nature of their ground state is highly debated. Here, we reconcile the ionic and covalent visions of the insulating state of nickelates. Through first-principles calculations, we show that it is reminiscent of the ionic charge disproportionation picture (with strictly low-spin 4+ …
Recently, superconductivity was discovered in the infinite layer of hole-doped nickelates NdNiO$_{2}$. Contrary to this, superconductivity in LaNiO$_{2}$ is still under debate. This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ appro…
Rare-earth nickelates form an intriguing series of correlated perovskite oxides. Apart from LaNiO3, they exhibit on cooling a sharp metal-insulator electronic phase transition, a concurrent structural phase transition and a magnetic phase transition toward an unusual antiferromagnetic spin order. Appealing for various applications, full exploitation of these compounds is still hampered by the lack of global understanding of the interplay between their electronic, structural and magnetic properties. Here, we show from first-principles calculations that the metal-insulator transition of nickelat…
Resistances that exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, known as bad metal behavior, and non-Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of many strongly correlated materials. Here we establish the conditions that lead to bad metal and non-Fermi liquid phases in NdNiO3, which exhibits a prototype, bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. We show that resistance saturation is determined by the magnitude of the Ni eg orbital splitting, which can be tuned by strain in epitaxial films, causing the appearance of bad metal behavior under certain conditions. The results shed…
The rare-earth nickelates are a rich playground for transport properties, known to host non-Fermi liquid character, resistance saturation and metal-insulator transitions. We report a study of transport in LaNiO3 in the presence of tunable disorder induced by irradiation. While pristine LaNiO3 samples are metallic, highly irradiated samples show insulating behaviour at all temperatures. Using irradiation fluence as a tuning handle, we uncover an intermediate region hosting a metal-insulator transition. This transition falls within the Mott-Ioffe-Regel regime wherein the mean free path is compar…

We analyze the charge- and spin response functions of rare-earth nickelates RNiO3 and their heterostructures using random-phase approximation in a two-band Hubbard model. The inter-orbital charge fluctuation is found to be the driving mechanism for the rock-salt type bond order in bulk RNiO3, and good agreement of the ordering temperature with experimental values is achieved for all RNiO3 using realistic crystal structures and interaction parameters. We further show that magnetic ordering in bulk is not driven by the spin fluctuation and should be instead explained as ordering of localized mom…
We use density-functional theory calculations to explore the magnetic properties of perovskite rare-earth nickelates, $\mathcal{R}$NiO$_3$, by constructing microscopic magnetic models containing all relevant exchange interactions via Wannierization and Green's function techniques. These models elucidate the mechanism behind the formation of antiferromagnetic order with the experimentally observed propagation vector, and explain the reason previous DFT plus Hubbard $U$ calculations favored ferromagnetic order. We perform calculations of magnetic moments and exchange-coupling parameters for diff…
Although discovery in hydrogen induced electronic transition within perovskite family of rare-earth nickelate (ReNiO3) opens up a new paradigm in exploring both the new materials functionality and device applications, the existing research stays at ReNiO3 with light rare-earth compositions. To further extend the cognition towards heavier rare-earth, herein we demonstrate the hydrogen induced electronic transitions for quasi-single crystalline ReNiO3/LaAlO3 (001) heterostructures, covering a large variety of the rare-earth composition from Nd to Er. The hydrogen induced elevations in the resist…
The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hole doped NdNiO2, similar to CaCuO2, has received enormous attention. However, different from CaCuO2, RNiO2 (R = Nd, La) has itinerant electrons in the rare-earth spacer layer. Previous studies show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 and rare-earth-d orbitals is very weak and thus RNiO2 is still a promising analog of CaCuO2. Here, we perform first-principles calculations to show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons in RNiO2 is substantially stronger than previously thought. The dominant hybridizatio…
Whilst electron correlations were previously recognized to trigger beyond conventional direct current (DC) electronic transportations (e.g. metal-to-insulator transitions, bad metal, thermistors), their respective influences to the alternation current (AC) transport are largely overlooked. Herein, we demonstrate active regulations in the electronic functionalities of d-band correlated rare-earth nickelate (ReNiO3) thin films, by simply utilizing their electronic responses to AC-frequencies (fAC). Assisted by temperature dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, we discovere…
Although rare earth nickelates (ReNiO3) exhibit abundant electronic phases and widely adjustable metal to insulator electronic transition properties, their practical electronic applications are largely impeded by their intrinsic meta stability. Apart from elevating oxygen reaction pressures, heterogeneous nucleation is expected as an alternative strategy that enables the crystallization of ReNiO3 at low meta stability. In this work, the respective roles of high oxygen pressure and heterogeneous interface in triggering ReNiO3 thin films growth at metastable state are revealed. The ReNiO3 (Re:Nd…
The observation of superconductivity in infinite layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ thin films has led to rapid theoretical and experimental investigations of these copper-oxide-analogue systems [1-15]. Superconductivity has also been found in (Pr,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [16,17], but not previously in (La,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [2], raising a fundamental question whether superconductivity is associated with the presence of rare-earth moments [18,19]. Here we show that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low-te…
Rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_2$ adopting an infinite-layer phase show superconductivity once La, Pr or Nd are substituted by a divalent cation. Either in the pristine or doped form, these materials are reported to adopt a high symmetry, perfectly symmetric, P4/mmm tetragonal cell. Nevertheless, bulk compounds are scarce, hindering a full understanding of the role of chemical pressure or strain on lattice distortions that in turn could alter magnetic and electronic properties of the 2D nickelates. Here, by performing a full analysis of the prototypical YNiO$_2$ compound with first-principles sim…
Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a remarkable metal-insulator transition accompanied by a structural transition associated with a lattice `breathing' mode. Using model considerations and first-principles calculations, we present a theory of this phase transition, which reveals the key role of the coupling between the electronic and lattice instabilities. We show that the transition is driven by the proximity to an electronic disproportionation instability which couples to the breathing mode, thus cooperatively driving the system into the insulating state. This allows us to identify two key contro…
Anisotropies in electronic transportations conventionally originate from the nature of low symmetries in crystal structures, and were not anticipated for perovskite oxides, the crystal asymmetricity of which is far below, e.g. van der Waals or topological crystal. Beyond conventional expectations, herein we demonstrate pronounced anisotropies in the inter-band coulomb repulsion dominated electronic transportation behaviors under low-dimensional confinement for the perovskite family of rare-earth nickelates (ReNiO3). From one aspect, imparting bi-axial interfacial strains upon various lattice p…
Rare earth nickelates RENiO3 which attract interest due to their sharp metal-insulator phase transition, are instable in bulk form due to the necessity of an important oxygen pressure to stabilize Ni in its 3+ state of oxidation. Here, we report the stabilization of rare earth nickelates in [(SmNiO3)t/(NdNiO3)t]n thin film multilayers, t being the thickness of layers alternated n times. Both bilayers and multilayers have been deposited by Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition. The multilayer structure and the presence of the metastable phases SmNiO3 and NdNiO3 are evidenced from by X-ray an…
While CaFeO$_3$ exhibits upon cooling a metal-insulator transition linked to charge ordering, SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ keep metallic behaviors down to very low temperatures. Moreover, alkaline-earth ferrites do not seem prone to orbital ordering in spite of the d$^4$ formal occupancy of Fe$^{4+}$. Here, from first-principles simulations, we show that the metal-insulator transition of CaFeO$_3$ is structurally triggered by oxygen rotation motions as in rare-earth nickelates. This not only further clarifies why SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ remain metallic but allows us to predict that an insulating ch…

After the reward of more than two decades of pursuit on the high-Tc cuprate analog with the hope to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity, the discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate brings more mystery to the picture than expected. Tops in the list of questions are perhaps (1) absence of superconductivity in the bulk nickelate and limited thickness of the infinite-layer phase in thin film, (2) absence of superconductivity in the La-nickelate despite it being the earliest studied rare-earth nickelate, and the role of 4f orbital in th…
The rare-earth nickelates possess a diverse set of collective phenomena including metal-to-insulator transitions, magnetic phase transitions, and, upon chemical reduction, superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate epitaxial stabilization of layered nickelates in the Ruddlesden-Popper form, Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$, using molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the stoichiometry of the parent perovskite NdNiO$_3$, we can reproducibly synthesize the $n = 1 - 5$ member compounds. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O $K$ and Ni $L$ edges indicate systematic changes in both the nickel-oxygen hybrid…
Rare-earth nickelates are strongly correlated oxides displaying a metal-to-insulator transition at a temperature tunable by the rare-earth ionic radius. In PrNiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$, the transition is very sharp and shows an hysteretic behavior akin to a first-order transition. Both the temperature at which the transition occurs and the associated resistivity change are extremely sensitive to doping and therefore to off-stoichiometry issues that may arise during thin film growth. Here we report that strong deviations in the transport properties of NdNiO$_3$ films can arise in films grown consecu…
In this work we present a model system built out of artificially layered materials, allowing us to understand the interrelation of magnetic phases with that of the metallic-insulating phase at long length-scales, and enabling new strategies for the design and control of materials in devices. The artificial model system consists of superlattices made of SmNiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$ layers -- two members of the fascinating rare earth nickelate family, having different metal-to-insulator and magnetic transition temperatures. By combining two complementary techniques -- resonant elastic x-ray scatterin…
This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy ran…
The fundamental properties of infinite-layer rare-earth nickelates (RNiO2) are carefully revisited and compared with those of CaCuO2 and RNiO3 perovskites. Combining first-principles and finite-temperature second-principles calculations, we highlight that bulk NdNiO2 compound are far from equivalent to CaCuO2, together at the structural, electronic, and magnetic levels. Structurally, it is shown to be prone to spin-phonon coupling induced oxygen square rotation motion, which might be responsible for the intriguing upturn of the resistivity. At the electronic and magnetic levels, we point out o…

We study the mechanism of orbital-order melting observed at temperature T_OO in the series of rare-earth manganites. We find that many-body super-exchange yields a transition-temperature T_KK that decreases with decreasing rare-earth radius, and increases with pressure, opposite to the experimental T_OO. We show that the tetragonal crystal-field splitting reduces T_KK further increasing the discrepancies with experiments. This proves that super-exchange effects, although very efficient, in the light of the experimentally observed trends, play a minor role for the melting of orbital ordering in…
Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the control of the electronic, magnetic, ionic, and transport properties of functional oxide perovskites. Rare earth nickelates (RENiO$_{3-x}$) have emerged over the years as a rich platform to study the interplay between the lattice, the electronic structure, and ordered magnetism. In this study, we investigate the evolution of the electronic and magnetic structure in thin films of RENiO$_{3-x}$, using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and imaging, resonant X-ray scattering, and extended multiplet ligand field theory modeling. We find that …
Recent experiments have shown that the reduced multilayer rare-earth (RE) nickel oxides of form RE$_{p+1}$Ni$_p$O$_{2p+2}$ may belong to the novel family of superconducting lanthanide nickelates. Here, the correlated electronic structure of Pr$_{4}$Ni$_3$O$_{8}$ and Nd$_{6}$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ is studied by means of an advanced realistic many-body framework. It is revealed that the low-energy physics of both systems is dominated by an interplay of Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and Ni-$d_{z^2}$ degrees of freedom. Whilst the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals are always highly correlated near an (orbital-selective) Mott-…

Fundamental understanding and control of the electronic structure evolution in rare-earth nickelates is a fascinating and meaningful issue, as well as being helpful to understand the mechanism of recently discovered superconductivity. Here we systematically study the dimensionality effect on the ground electronic state in high-quality (NdNiO3)m/(SrTiO3)1 superlattices through transport and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The metal-to-insulator transition temperature decreases with the thickness of the NdNiO3 slab decreasing from bulk to 7 unit cells, then increases gradually as m further r…
