We study the supercurrent in a superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor graphene junction. In contrast to its metallic counterpart, the oscillating critical current in our setup decays only weakly upon increasing exchange field and junction width. We find an unusually large residual value of the supercurrent at the oscillatory cusps due to a strong deviation from a sinusoidal current-phase relationship. Our findings suggest a very efficient device for dissipationless supercurrent switching.
In this paper we study the effect of a Zeeman field on the supercurrent of a mesoscopic SNS junction. It is shown that the supercurrent suppression is due to a redistribution of current-carrying states in energy space. A dramatic consequence is that (part of the) the suppressed supercurrent can be recovered with a suitable non-equilibrium distribution of quasiparticles.
We consider theoretically and numerically magnetic field dependencies of the maximum supercurrent across Josephson tunnel junctions with spatially alternating critical current density. We find that two flux-penetration fields and one-splinter-vortex equilibrium state exist in long junctions.
Josephson junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers with non-collinear magnetizations between adjacent layers carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. The signature of the spin-triplet supercurrent is a relatively slow decay of the maximum supercurrent as a function of the thickness of the middle ferromagnetic layer. In this work we focus on junctions where the middle magnetic layer is a [Co/Pd]$_N$ multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), while the outer two layers have in-plane anisotropy. We compare junctions where the middle PMA layer is or is not con…
With simple but exactly solvable model, we investigate the supercurrent transferring through the c-axis cuprate superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions with the clean normal metal much thicker than its coherence length. It is shown that the supercurrent as a function of thickness of the normal metal decreases much slower than the exponential decaying expected by the proximity effect. The present result may account for the giant proximity effect observed in the c-axis cuprate SNS junctions.
Josephson junctions made with conventional s-wave superconductors and containing multiple layers of ferromagnetic materials can carry spin-triplet supercurrent in the presence of certain types of magnetic inhomogeneity. In junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers, the triplet supercurrent is predicted to be maximal when the magnetizations of adjacent layers are orthogonal, and zero when the magnetizations of any two adjacent layers are parallel. Here we demonstrate on-off control of the spin-triplet supercurrent in such junctions, achieved by rotating the magnetization direction of one …
We theoretically calculate the charge-supercurrent through a ballistic graphene junction where superconductivity is induced via the proximity-effect. Both monolayer and bilayer graphene are considered, including the possibility of strain in the systems. We demonstrate that the supercurrent at the charge neutrality point can be tuned efficiently by means of mechanical strain. Remarkably, the supercurrent is enhanced or suppressed relative to the non-strained case depending on the direction of this strain. We also calculate the Fano factor in the normal-state of the system and show how its behav…
We report that spin supercurrents can be induced in diffusive SFS Josephson junctions without any magnetic misalignment or intrinsic spin orbit coupling. Instead, the pathway to spin triplet generation is provided via geometric curvature, and results in a long ranged Josephson effect. In addition, the curvature is shown to induce a dynamically tunable $0-π$ transition in the junction. We provide the analytic framework and discuss potential experimental and innovation implications.
Superconductor/normal conductor/superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions with highly transparent interfaces are predicted to show significant deviations from sinusoidal supercurrent-phase relationships (CPR) at low temperatures. We investigate experimentally the CPR of a ballistic Nb/InAs(2DES)/Nb junction in the temperature range from 1.3 K to 9 K using a modified Rifkin-Deaver method. The CPR is obtained from the inductance of the phase-biased junction. Transport measurements complement the investigation. At low temperatures, substantial deviations of the CPR from conventional tunnel-junctio…

We have measured spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions of the form S/F'/F/F'/S, where S is superconducting Nb, F' is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization, and F is a Ni/[Co/Ni]n multilayer with out-of-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays very slowly with F-layer thickness, and is much larger than in similar junctions not containing the two F' layers. Those two features are the characteristic signatures of spin-triplet supercurrent, which is maximized by the orthogonality of the magnetizations in the F and F' layers. Magnetic measurements confirm the…
Motivated by a recent experiment evidencing triplet superconductivity in a ferromagnetic Josephson junction with a Cu$_2$MnAl-Heusler barrier, we construct a theoretical model accounting for this observation. The key ingredients in our model which generate the triplet supercurrent are \textit{spin-active zones}, characterised by an effective canted interface magnetic moment. Using a numerical solution of the quasiclassical equations of superconductivity with spin-active boundary conditions, we find qualitatively very good agreement with the experimentally observed supercurrent. Further experim…
Nonlocal supercurrent was observed in mesoscopic planar SNS Josephson junction with additional normal metal electrodes when nonequilibrium quasiparticles were injected from the normal metal electrode in one of the superconducting banks of the Josephson junction in the absence of net transport current through the junction. We claim that the effect observed is due to a supercurrent counterflow appearing to compensate the quasiparticle flow in the SNS weak link. We have measured SNS junction response for different distances from the quasiparticle injector to the SNS junction at temperatures far b…
Josephson junctions with s-wave superconductors (S) and multiple ferromagnetic (F) layers carry spin-triplet supercurrents in the presence of magnetically inhomogeneous spin-mixer interfaces. Here, we report magnetic Josephson junctions with exchange-spring and double exchange-spring ("spin-mixer") Co/Py interfaces. At the Co/Py interface, exchange coupling is strong with respect to the magnetic anisotropy of Py and so, depending on the direction and magnitude of an external magnetic field, a non-collinear magnetic structure forms in Py creating the necessary magnetic inhomogeneity for singlet…
The lengthscale over which supercurrent from conventional BCS, $s$-wave, superconductors ($S$) can penetrate an adjacent ferromagnetic ($F$) layer depends on the ability to convert singlet Cooper pairs into triplet Cooper pairs. Spin aligned triplet Cooper pairs are not dephased by the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and can thus penetrate an $F$ layer over much longer distances than singlet Cooper pairs. These triplet Cooper pairs carry a dissipationless spin current and are the fundamental building block for the fledgling field of superspintronics. Singlet-triplet conversion by inhomogen…
Magnetic inhomogeneity at a superconductor (S)/ferromagnet (F) interface converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs into spin-one triplet pairs. These pairs are immune to the pair-breaking exchange field in F and support a long-range proximity effect. Although recent experiments have confirmed the existence of spin-polarised triplet supercurrents in S-F-S Josephson junctions, reversible control of the supercurrent has been impossible because of the robust pre-configured nature of the inhomogeneity. Here we use a barrier comprising three F layers whose relative magnetic orientation, and hence the inter…
Transport is called nonreciprocal when not only the sign, but also the absolute value of the current, depends on the polarity of the applied voltage. It requires simultaneously broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, e.g., by the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field. So far, observation of nonreciprocity was always tied to resistivity, and dissipationless nonreciprocal circuit elements were elusive. Here, we engineer fully superconducting nonreciprocal devices based on highly-transparent Josephson junctions fabricated on InAs quantum wells. We demonstrate supercurrent rec…
Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a supercondu…
Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic barrier can have positive or negative critical current depending on the thickness $d_F$ of the ferromagnetic layer. Accordingly, the Josephson phase in the ground state is equal to 0 (a conventional or 0 junction) or to $π$ ($π$ junction). When 0 and $π$ segments are joined to form a "0-$π$ junction", spontaneous supercurrents around the 0-$π$ boundary can appear. Here we report on the visualization of supercurrents in superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) junctions by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM). We discuss d…
Quasiclassical Green's functions of a short superconductor/normal metal/superconductor (SNS) junction are calculated for multi-mode junction with arbitrary electron transmission properties. They provide the basis for description of all of the junction transport characteristics, and are used to calculate the equilibrium spectral density of supercurrent fluctuations.
We present measurements of Josephson junctions containing three magnetic layers with noncolinear magnetizations. The junctions are of the form $S/F^{\prime}/N/F/N/F^{\prime \prime}/S$, where $S$ is superconducting Nb, $F^\prime$ is either a thin Ni or Permalloy layer with in-plane magnetization, $N$ is the normal metal Cu, $F$ is a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) with magnetization perpendicular to the plane, composed of Pd/Co multilayers on either side of a thin Ru spacer, and $F^{\prime \prime}$ is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays more s…
We present magnetization measurements of mesoscopic superconducting niobium loops containing a ferromagnetic (PdNi) pi-junction. The loops are prepared on top of the active area of a micro Hall-sensor based on high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We observe asymmetric switching of the loop between different magnetization states when reversing the sweep direction of the magnetic field. This provides evidence for a spontaneous current induced by the intrinsic phase shift of the pi-junction. In addition, the presence of the spontaneous current near zero applied field is directly revealed b…
Simultaneous breaking of inversion- and time-reversal symmetry in Josephson junction leads to a possible violation of the $I(φ)=-I(-φ)$ equality for the current-phase relation. This is known as anomalous Josephson effect and it produces a phase shift $φ_0$ in sinusoidal current-phase relations. In ballistic Josephson junctions with non-sinusoidal current phase relation the observed phenomenology is much richer, including the supercurrent diode effect and the magnetochiral anisotropy of Josephson inductance. In this work, we present measurements of both effects on arrays of Josephson junctions …
We study the supercurrent in a superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructure containing a noncollinear magnetic domain in the ferromagnetic region. It is demonstrated that the magnetic domain can lead to a spin-flip process, which can reverse the spin orientations of the singlet Cooper pair propagating through the magnetic domain region. If the ferromagnetic layers on both sides of magnetic domain have the same features, the long-range proximity effect will take place. That is because the singlet Cooper pair will create an exact phase-cancellation effect and gets an additional $π$ …
We study the field dependence of the maximum supercurrent in narrow edge-type thin-film Josephson junctions. It is assumed that the junction extends across thin-film strip of width W that is much less than the Pearl length; the film thickness is much less than the London penetration depth. We calculate the maximum supercurrent within nonlocal Josephson electrodynamics, which takes into account the stray fields affecting tunneling currents. In the case when W is much less than the thin-film Josephson length, the phase difference along the junction depends only on the junction geometry and the a…

We investigate transverse charge and spin dc supercurrents in a ferromagnet coupled to a superconductor where the ferromagnet has inhomogeneous magnetic structure. These transverse supercurrents arise from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the transverse charge supercurrent is essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. Possible candidates of magnetic structure to verify our prediction are also discussed.
The experimental achievements during the past year in demonstrating the existence of long-ranged spin-triplet supercurrents in ferromagnets proximity coupled to singlet superconductors open up the possibility for new interesting physics and applications [for a review, see M. Eschrig, Phys. Today 64(1), 43 (2011)]. Our group reported the injection of triplet supercurrents into a magnetically uniform ferromagnet (Co) by sandwiching it between two helimagnet/superconductor (Ho/Nb) bilayers to form a Nb/Ho/Co/Ho/Nb-type Josephson device. In the function of the Ho layer thicknesses, the supercurren…
We theoretically investigate the mapping of the supercurrent distribution in a planar superconductor-normal-superconductor junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field via the scanning gate microscopy technique. We find that the distribution of counter-propagating supercurrents aligned in Josephson vortices can be mapped by the change of the critical current induced by the tip of the scanning probe, if the flux in the junction is set close to maxima of the Fraunhofer pattern. Instead, when the magnetic field drives the junction to a supercurrent minimum in the Fraunhofer pattern,…
Using tunneling spectroscopy, we have measured the local electron energy distribution function in the normal part of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction containing an extra lead to a normal reservoir. In the presence of simultaneous supercurrent and injected quasiparticle current, the distribution function exhibits a sharp feature at very low energy. The feature is odd in energy, and odd under reversal of either the supercurrent or the quasiparticle current direction. The feature represents an effective temperature gradient across the SNS Josephson junction th…
We demonstrate that perfect conversion between charged supercurrents in superconductors and neutral supercurrents in electron-hole pair condensates is possible via a new Andreev-like scattering mechanism. As a result, when two superconducting circuits are coupled through a bilayer exciton condensate, the superflow in both layers is drastically modified. Depending on the phase biases the supercurrents can be completely blocked or exhibit perfect drag.
Control of the Josephson current by varying a gate current has recently been demonstrated in both 4-terminal and 3-terminal junctions. We show that, when the the gates are weakly coupled to the Josephson junction, the Josephson current versus gate current (or versus gate voltage) relation is the same for both the 4- and 3- terminal geometries. At low temperature, the supercurrent switches abruptly as a function of the gate voltage, but only slowly as a function of the gate current.
We report for the first time enhancement of the supercurrent by means of injection in a mesoscopic three terminal planar SNSNS device made of Al on GaAs. When a current is injected from one of the superconducting Al electrodes at an injection bias $V=Δ(T)/e$, the DC Josephson current between the other two superconducting electrodes has a maximum, giving evidence for an enhancement due to a non-equilibrium injection into bound Andreev states of the underlying semiconductor. The effect persists to temperatures where the equilibrium supercurrent has vanished.
It has been suggested by theoretical works that equal spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated in Josephson junctions containing both a ferromagnet and a source of spin-orbit coupling. Our recent experimental work suggested that spin-triplet Cooper pairs were not generated by a Pt spin-orbit coupling layer when the ferromagnetic weak link had entirely in-plane anisotropy (N. Satchell and N.O. Birge, Phys. Rev. B 97, 214509 (2018)). Here, we revisit the experiment using Pt again as a source for spin-orbit coupling and a [Co(0.4 nm)/Ni(0.4 nm)]$_{\times8}$/Co(0.4 nm) ferromagnetic weak link wi…
We propose a Josephson junction setup based on a topological insulator (TI) thin film to detect Majorana states, which exploits the unique helical and extended nature of the TI surface state. When the magnetic flux through the junction is close to an integer number of flux quanta, Majorana states, present on both surfaces of the film, give rise to a narrow peak-dip structure in the current- phase relation by hybridizing at the edge of the junction. Moreover, the maximal Majorana-state contribution to Josephson current takes a (nearly) universal value, approximately equal to the supercurrent ca…
Pairs fluctuation supercurrents and inverse lifetimes were measured on epitaxial c-axis junctions of the cuprates in the pseudogap regime, with a $PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ barrier sandwiched in between two $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ or doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ electrodes, with or without magnetic fields parallel to the a-b planes. All junctions had a $\rm T_c(high)\approx 85-90$ K and a $\rm T_c(low)\approx 50-55$ K electrodes, allowing us to study pairs fluctuation supercurrents and inverse life times in between these two temperatures. In junctions with a pseudogap electrode under zero field, an excesss curren…
We observe a series of discontinuities in the above gap current/voltage characteristics of highly transmissive Nb/Si superconductor/semiconductor interfaces. The bias at which each switch occurs decreases in quantized steps as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The observed step-size is the same for both dependencies. We propose that the steps correspond to supercurrent quantization through granular Josephson junctions formed near the interface.
We present a study of a graphene-based Josephson junction with dedicated side gates carved from the same sheet of graphene as the junction itself. These side gates are highly efficient, and allow us to modulate carrier density along either edge of the junction in a wide range. In particular, in magnetic fields in the $1-2$ Tesla range, we are able to populate the next Landau level, resulting in Hall plateaus with conductance that differs from the bulk filling factor. When counter-propagating quantum Hall edge states are introduced along either edge, we observe supercurrent localized along that…
We study the dynamics of a magnetic domain wall, inserted in, or juxtaposed to, a conventional superconductor, via the passage of a spin polarized current through a FSF junction. Solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for the magnetic moments we calculate the velocity of the domain wall and compare it with the case of a FNF junction. We find that in several regimes the domain wall velocity is larger when it is driven by a supercurrent.
Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic materials are generating interest for use in superconducting electronics and cryogenic memory. Optimizing the performance of such junctions is an ongoing effort, requiring exploration of a broad range of magnetic systems. Here we study supercurrent transmission through Ni/Ru/Ni synthetic antiferromagnets, with the idea that their magnetic properties may be superior to those of isolated Ni layers. We find that the decay of the supercurrent as a function of Ni thickness is very slow, with a decay length of 7.5 $\pm$ 0.8 nm. We also characterize the ma…
The Josephson effect is a fundamental quantum phenomenon consisting in the appearance of a dissipationless supercurrent in a weak link between two superconducting (S) electrodes. While the mechanism leading to the Josephson effect is quite general, i.e., Andreev reflections at the interface between the S electrodes and the weak link, the precise physical details and topology of the junction drastically modify the properties of the supercurrent. Specifically, a strong enhancement of the critical supercurrent $I_C$ is expected to occur when the topology of the junction allows the emergence of Ma…
We study the Josephson effect in a triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--singlet superconductor junction. We show that the interaction of tunneling Cooper pairs with the interface magnetization can permit a Josephson current at the lowest order of a tunneling Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Two conditions must be satisfied for this to occur: the magnetization of the ferromagnet has a component parallel to the ${\bf d}$-vector of the triplet superconductor, and the gaps of the superconductors have the same parity with respect to the interface momentum. The resulting charge current displays an u…
We study the stochastic nature of switching current in hysteretic current-voltage characteristics of superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) junctions. We find that the dispersion of the switching current distribution scales with temperature as a power law with the power close to 1/3. This observation is in sharp contrast with the known Josephson junction behavior where switching current dispersion is expected to scale with the power 2/3. We propose an explanation using a generalized version of Kurkijarvi's theory for the flux stability in rf-SQUID and attribute this anomalous effect to t…
We demonstrate enhanced robustness of the supercurrent through graphene-based Josephson junctions in which strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) are induced. We compare the persistence of a supercurrent at high magnetic fields between Josephson junctions with graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride and graphene on WS$_2$, where strong SOIs are induced via the proximity effect. We find that in the shortest junctions both systems display signatures of induced superconductivity, characterized by a suppressed differential resistance at a low current, in magnetic fields up to 1 T. In longer junctions h…
Superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) junction provides a unique platform to study relativistic electrodynamics of Dirac fermions combined with proximity-induced superconductivity. We report observation of the Josephson effect in proximity-coupled superconducting junctions of graphene in contact with Pb1-xInx (x=0.07) electrodes for temperatures as high as T = 4.8K, with a large IcRn (~ 255 microV). This demonstrates that Pb1-xInx SGS junction would facilitate the development of the superconducting quantum information devices and superconductor-enhanced phase-coherent transport of graph…
Experimental techniques to verify Majoranas are of current interest. A prominent test is the effect of Majoranas on the Josephson current between two wires linked via a normal junction. Here, we study the case of a quantum dot connecting the two superconductors and the sign of the supercurrent in the trivial and topological regimes under grand-canonical equilibrium conditions, explicitly allowing for parity changes due to, e.g., quasi-particle poisoning. We find that the well-known supercurrent reversal for odd occupancy of the quantum dot (pi-junction) in the trivial case does not occur in th…
We study heterostructures of singlet superconductors (SC) and strongly spin-polarized ferromagnets (sFM) and show that a relative phase arises between the superconducting proximity amplitudes in the two ferromagnetic spin bands. We find a tunable pure spin supercurrent in a sFM contacted with only one SC electrode. We show that Josephson junctions are most effective for a spin polarization $P\sim 0.3$, and that critical currents for positive and negative bias differ for a high transmission Josephson junction, due to a relative phase between single and double pair transmission.
We report the emergence of zero-energy states in the trivial phase of a short nanowire junction with strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field, formed by strong coupling between the nanowire and two superconductors. The zero-energy states appear in the junction when the superconductors induce a large energy shift in the nanowire, such that the junction naturally forms a quantum dot, a process that is highly tunable by the superconductor width. Most importantly, we demonstrate that the zero-energy states produce a $π$-shift in the phase-biased supercurrent, which can be used as a simple too…
We investigate superconducting quantum interference devices consisting of two highly transmissive Josephson junctions coupled by a superconducting loop, all defined in an epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructure. A novel device design allows for independent measurements of the Andreev bound state spectrum within the normal region of a junction and the resulting current-phase relation. We show that knowledge of the Andreev bound state spectrum alone is enough to derive the independently measured phase dependent supercurrent. On the other hand, the opposite relation does not generally hold true as deta…
We study the Josephson effect for a topologically nontrivial superconducting (TS) wire with Majorana fermion end states and tunnel-coupled to s-wave BCS superconducting (S) electrodes. In an S-TS junction, no supercurrent flow is possible under fairly general conditions. For the S-TS-S junction, bulk TS quasiparticles must be accessible to have a Josephson effect. In the noninteracting case, we derive the exact current-phase relation (CPR) and find π-periodic behavior with negative critical current for weak tunnel couplings. Charging effects then cause the anomalous CPR $I(φ)=I_c \cosφ$, where…
