Inspired by the excluded volume model for isospin symmetric quarkyonic matter, we construct an `excluded volume' model for a charge neutral quarkyonic phase whose hadronic sector contains only neutrons. We refer to this model as quarkyonic neutron matter. We compute the equation of state for this model and solve the Tolman-Oppenhermer-Volkoff equations to obtain mass and radius relations relevant for neutron stars. The most straightforward extension of the model for symmetric quarkyonic matter to quarkyonic neutron matter does not satisfy the mass radius constraints from neutron star measurements. However, we show that by incorporating appropriate nuclear interactions in the excluded volume model one can produce mass-radius relations that lie within the constraints obtained from gravitational waves of binary neutron star mergers and maximum mass measurements of neutron stars.
We introduce a theoretical framework to analyze the thermal properties of a recently proposed "excluded volume" model of quarkyonic matter. This entails proposing finite temperature distribution functions and entropy functionals constrained by internal theoretical consistency. We use the formalism developed here to analyze the effect of temperature on the quark onset as a function of baryon density. We find that the baryon density at which the quarkyonic phase emerges decreases only slightly with temperature, an effect produced by large $N_c$. We furthermore find that a finite temperature incr…

The phase space structure of zero temperature Quarkyonic Matter is a Fermi sphere of Quark Matter, surrounded by a shell of Nucleonic Matter. We construct a quasi particle model of Quarkyonic Matter based on the constituent quark model, where the quark and nucleon masses are related by m_Q = m_N/N_c, and N_c is the number of quark colors. The region of occupied states is for quarks k_Q < k_F/N_c, and for nucleons k_F < k_N < k_F + Δ. We first consider the general problem of Quarkyonic Matter with hard core nucleon interactions. We then specialize to a quasi-particle model where the hard core n…
Quark matter may appear due to a hadronic-quark transition in the core of a hybrid star. Quarkyonic matter is an approach in which both quarks and nucleons appear as quasi-particles in a crossover transition, and provides an explicit realization of early ideas concerning quark matter (e.g., the MIT bag model). This description has recently been employed by McLerran and Reddy to model chargeless (pure neutron) matter with an approach that has the virtue that the speed of sound rises quickly at a neutron-quark transition so as to satisfy observational constraints on the neutron star maximum mass…
We discuss theoretical scenarios on crossover between nuclear matter (NM) and quark matter (QM). We classify various possibilities into three major scenarios according to the onset of diquark degrees of freedom that characterizes color-superconducting (CSC) states. In the conventional scenario NM occurs at the liquid-gas (or liquid-vacuum at zero temperature) phase transition and QM occurs next, after which CSC eventually appears. With the effect of strong correlation, the BEC-BCS scenario implies that CSC occurs next to NM and QM comes last in the BCS regime. We adopt the quarkyonic scenario …

In this contribution, we outline a new 2-phase description of the quark-nuclear matter hybrid equation of state that takes into account effects of phase space occupation (excluded volume) in both, the hadronic and the quark matter phases. For the nuclear matter phase, the reduction of the available volume at increasing density leads to a stiffening, while for the quark matter phase a reduction of the effective string tension in the confining density functional is obtained. The deconfinement phase transition in the resulting hybrid equation of state is sensitive to both excluded volume effects.…
A two-phase description of the quark-nuclear matter hybrid equation of state that takes into account the effect of excluded volume in both the hadronic and the quark matter phases is introduced. The nuclear phase manifests a reduction of the available volume as density increases, leading to a stiffening of the matter. The quark matter phase displays a reduction of the effective string tension in the confining density functional from available volume contributions. The nuclear equation of state is based upon the relativistic density functional model DD2 with excluded volume. The quark matter is…

We present a systematic investigation of the possible locations for the special point (SP), a unique feature of hybrid neutron stars in the mass-radius. The study is performed within the two-phase approach where the high-density (quark matter) phase is described by the constant-sound-speed (CSS) equation of state (EoS) and the nuclear matter phase around saturation density is varied from very soft (APR) to stiff (DD2 with excluded nucleon volume. Different construction schemes for the deconfinement transition are applied: Maxwell construction, mixed phase construction and parabolic interpolati…
Aims: We present a new microscopic hadron-quark hybrid equation of state model for astrophysical applications, from which compact hybrid star configurations are constructed. These are composed of a quark core and a hadronic shell with a first-order phase transition at their interface. The resulting mass-radius relations are in accordance with the latest astrophysical constraints. Methods: The quark matter description is based on a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) motivated chiral approach with higher-order quark interactions in the Dirac scalar and vector coupling channels. For hadronic matter we …
We explore the implications of the recent radius determination of PSR J0740+6620 by the NICER experiment combined with the neutron skin measurement by the PREX-II experiment and the associated inference of the slope of symmetry energy, for the structure of hybrid stars with a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to quark matter. We combine a covariant density-functional nucleonic equation of state (EOS) with a constant-speed-of-sound EOS for quark matter. We show that the radius and tidal deformability ranges obtained from GW170817 can be reconciled with the implication of the PR…
Recently, the radius of neutron star (NS) PSR J0740+6620 was measured by Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and an updated measurement of neutron skin thickness of ${}^{208}$Pb ($R_{\rm skin}^{208}$) was reported by the PREX-II experiment. These new measurements can help us better understand the unknown equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. In this work, we adopt a hybrid parameterization method, which incorporates the nuclear empirical parameterization and some widely used phenomenological parameterizations, to analyze the results of nuclear experiments and astrophysical ob…
We study a family of equations of state for hybrid neutron star matter. The hybrid EOS are obtained by a Maxwell construction of the first-order phase transition between a hadronic phase described by the relativistic density-functional EOS of the "DD2" class with excluded volume effects and a deconfined quark matter phase modeled by an instantaneous nonlocal version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in SU(2)$_f$ with vector interactions and color superconductivity. The form factor in the nonlocal quark matter model is fitted to lattice QCD results in the Coulomb gauge. Owing to strong coupling i…
The neutron star spin down imposes a balance between the energy and angular momentum (E/L) losses of a pulsar. This translates into constraints on the region of emission. The E/L balance may be cogent in discriminating among the models of gamma-ray production. Hence, models which require the release of the entire luminosity at the polar caps should be excluded. Also models where the radiative zone is well inside the speed of light radius have some difficulties. It is argued that a local unbalance of E/L should generate a global instability of the magnetosphere, possibly quenching the emission …
We perform a Bayesian analysis in the basis of a recently developed two-parameter class of hybrid equations of state that allow for high-mass compact star twins. While recently a wide range of radii, from 9 - 15 km, has been inferred for different neutron stars using different techniques, we perform our analysis under the supposition that the radii are towards the large end ($13-15$ km). We use this radius constraint together with the undebated statistically independent constraint for high masses ($\sim 2~M_\odot$) as priors in selecting the most probable hybrid equations of state from a famil…
We study the structure of neutron stars in R+β R^{μν} R_{μν} gravity model with perturbative method. We obtain mass--radius relations for six representative equations of state (EoSs). We find that, for |β| ~ 10^11 cm^2, the results differ substantially from the results of general relativity. Some of the soft EoSs that are excluded within the framework of general relativity can be reconciled for certain values of β of this order with the 2 solar mass neutron star recently observed. For values of β greater than a few 10^11 cm^2 we find a new solution branch allowing highly massive neutron stars.…
We present a systematic investigation of the cosmological constant effects in compact stars interiors in the framework of Einstein's gravity. Consideration of a cosmological constant $Λ$ in compact stars is motivated by the mechanism of acceleration of the observable universe, where $Λ$ is usually related to the dark energy. In particular, we consider compact star mass twins, hybrid neutron stars that populate both the second and third branch of the mass-radius diagram. For those models, the need of consideration of excluded volume effects in the equation of state, resulting from the finite si…
We study the structure of neutron stars in perturbative f(R) gravity models with realistic equations of state. We obtain mass-radius relations in a gravity model of the form f(R)=R+αR^2. We find that deviations from the results of general relativity, comparable to the variations due to using different equations of state (EoS'), are induced for |alpha| ~ 10^9 cm^2. Some of the soft EoS' that are excluded within the framework of general relativity can be reconciled with the 2 solar mass neutron star recently observed for certain values of alpha within this range. For some of the EoS' we find tha…
We investigate the possibility that GW170817 has not been the merger of two conventional neutron stars (NS) but involved at least one if not two hybrid stars with a quark matter core which might even belong to a third family of compact stars. To this end, we develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state (EoS) under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now also include the tidal deformability from GW170817 and the first result for the mass and radius determination for PSR J0030+0451 by NICER. We apply this method for the first time to a tw…
Transition of a compact star into the third family for an equation of state (EoS) featuring mass twins is considered. The energy released at a baryon number conserving transition for static compact stars configurations is computed for two sets of models for comparison. The EoS of choice is the density dependent functional DD2 EoS with excluded model correction for hadronic matter which suffers a phase transition into deconfined quark matter described by a constant speed of sound approach. The two sets of EoS models feature different compact star mass onsets that maximize the energy and radius …
Neutrons stars are unique laboratories to discriminate between the various proposed equations of state of matter at and above nuclear density. One sub-class of neutron stars - those inside quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs) - produce a thermal surface emission from which the neutron star radius (R_NS) can be measured, using the widely accepted observational scenario for qLMXBs, assuming unmagnetized H atmospheres. In a combined spectral analysis, this work first reproduces a previously published measurement of the \rns, assumed to be the same for all neutron stars, using a slightly exp…
While a white dwarf is, from a theoretical perspective, the most plausible primary star in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), many other candidates have not been formally ruled out. Shock energy deposited in the envelope of any exploding primary contributes to the early SN brightness and, since this radiation energy is degraded by expansion after the explosion, the diffusive luminosity depends on the initial primary radius. We present a new non-detection limit of the nearby SN Ia 2011fe, obtained what appears to be just 4 hours after explosion, allowing us to directly constrain the initial primary rad…
In this work we investigate the effects of a non-minimally coupled quartic order scalar model on static neutron stars, with the non-minimal coupling in the Jordan frame being of the form $f(ϕ) = 1 + ξϕ^2$. Particularly we derive the Einstein frame Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, and by numerically integrating them for both the interior and the exterior of the neutron star, using a double shooting python 3 based numerical code, we extract the masses and radii of the neutron stars evaluated finally in the Jordan frame, along with several other related physical quantities of interest. With …
