The phase space structure of zero temperature Quarkyonic Matter is a Fermi sphere of Quark Matter, surrounded by a shell of Nucleonic Matter. We construct a quasi particle model of Quarkyonic Matter based on the constituent quark model, where the quark and nucleon masses are related by m_Q = m_N/N_c, and N_c is the number of quark colors. The region of occupied states is for quarks k_Q < k_F/N_c, and for nucleons k_F < k_N < k_F + Δ. We first consider the general problem of Quarkyonic Matter with hard core nucleon interactions. We then specialize to a quasi-particle model where the hard core nucleon interactions are accounted for by an excluded volume. In this model, we show that the nucleonic shell forms past some critical density related to the hard core size, and for large densities becomes a thin shell. We explore the basic features of such a model, and argue this model has the semi-quantitative behaviour needed to describe neutron stars.
We extend the excluded-volume model of isospin symmetric two-flavor dense quarkyonic matter [Phys. Rev. C 101, 035201 (2020)] including strange particles and address its implications for neutron stars. The effective sizes of baryons are defined from the diverging hard-core potentials in the short interdistance regime. Around the hard-core density, the repulsive core between baryons at short distances leads to a saturation in the number density of baryons and generates perturbative quarks from the lower phase space, which leads to the shell-like distribution of baryons by the Pauli exclusion pr…
We suggest an extension to isospin asymmetric matter of the quarkyonic model from McLerran and Reddy. This extension allows us to construct the $β$-equilibrium between quarks, nucleons and leptons. The concept of the quarkyonic matter originates from the large number of color limit for which nucleons are the correct degrees of freedom near the Fermi surface -- reflecting the confining forces -- while deep inside the Fermi sea quarks naturally appear. In isospin asymmetric matter, we suggest that this new concept can be implemented within a global isoscalar relation between the shell gaps diffe…

We present a field theoretical description of quarkyonic matter consisting of quark, nucleon and ghost fields coupling to mesonic degrees of freedom. The ghosts are present to cancel over-counting of nucleon states that are Pauli blocked by the quark Fermi sea. Such a theory becomes an effective field theory of nucleons at low baryon density, and as such will reproduce nucleonic matter phenomenology. This theory can accommodate chiral symmetry restoration and the dynamical generation of a shell of nucleons at the Fermi surface. It is valid for finite temperature and density. In such a theory, …
We develop a method for constructing the Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory Lagrangian (L_{HBChPT}), to a given chiral order, within HBChPT. We work within SU(2) theory, with only the pion field interacting with the nucleon. The main difficulties, which are solved, are to develop techniques for implementing charge conjugation invariance, and for taking the nucleon on shell, both within the nonrelativistic formalism. We obtain complete lists of independent terms in L_{HBChPT} through O(q^3) for off- shell nucleons. Then, eliminating equation-of-motion (eom) terms at the relativistic and no…
We show that the on-shell effective theory (OSEFT) is the quantum field theory counterpart of a Foldy-Wouthuysen diagonalization of relativistic quantum mechanics for massless fermions. Thus, it is free of the Zitterbewegung oscillations that would yield an ill-defined meaning to the semiclassical transport approach at short distances if derived from the pure Dirac picture. We present a detailed derivation of the collision terms in the chiral kinetic theory using the OSEFT. Collision integrals are derived up to order 1/E, where E is the energy of an on-shell fermion. At this order, the collisi…
We construct a complete list of O(q^4) terms directly within Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory (HBChPT) in the absence of external fields and assuming isospin symmetry. In addition to a phase rule recently developed (NPA646, 343, '99), a variety of algebraic identities and reparameterization invariance, are used to ensure linear independence of the terms and their low energy coupling constants. We first construct O(q^4) terms terms for off-shell nucleons, and then perform the on-shell reduction, again within HBChPT. We discuss an application of the O(q^4) terms to the evaluation of the O…
We reexamine the derivation of relativistic transport equations for fermions when conserving the most general spinor structure of the interaction and Green function. Such an extension of the formalism is needed when dealing with {\it e.g.} spin-polarized nuclear matter or non-parity conserving interactions. It is shown that some earlier derivations can lead to an incomplete description of the evolution of the system even in the case of parity-conserving, spin-saturated systems. The concepts of kinetic equation and mass shell condition have to be extended, in particular both of them acquire a n…
We present a nonperturbative derivation of effective valence-shell Hamiltonians in the framework of the recently developed in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG). As a first application, we calculate the spectra of $p$- and $sd$-shell nuclei, $^6$Li and $^{18}$O, based on evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions. For $^6$Li, the spectrum is in very good agreement with ab-initio results. For $^{18}$O, the IM-SRG provides a new method for the shell model to systematically go beyond effective interaction techniques based on diagrammatic expansions.
The aim of this work is to present an overview of the derivation of the effective shell-model Hamiltonian and decay operators within many-body perturbation theory, and to show the results of selected shell-model studies based on their utilisation. More precisely, we report some technical details that are needed by non-experts to approach the derivation of shell-model Hamiltonians and operators starting from realistic nuclear potentials, in order to provide some guidance to shell-model calculations where the single-particle energies, two-body matrix elements of the residual interaction, effecti…
In this paper we present an evolution of our derivation of the shell-model effective Hamiltonian, namely introducing effects of three-body contributions. More precisely, we consider a three-body potential at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, and the induced three-body forces that arise from many-body correlations among valence nucleons. The first one is included, in the derivation of the effective Hamiltonian for one- and two-valence nucleon-systems, at first order in the many-body perturbation theory. Namely, we include only the three-body interaction between one or…
We have studied p-shell nuclei using a two-frequency shell-model approach with an effective interaction derived from the Bonn-A nucleon-nucleon potential by means of a G-matrix folded-diagram method. First, we briefly describe our derivation of the effective interaction in a model space composed of harmonic hoscillator wave functions with two different length parameters, b_in and b_out, for the core and the valence orbits, respectively. Then we present some selected results of our calculations. We show that a good agreement with experiment is obtained, which is definitely better than that prov…
This paper is an homage to the seminal work of Gerry Brown and Tom Kuo, where shell model calculations were performed for 18O and 18F using an effective interaction derived from the Hamada-Johnston nucleon-nucleon potential. That work has been the first successful attempt to provide a description of nuclear structure properties starting from the free nucleon-nucleon potential. We shall compare the approach employed in the 1966 paper with the derivation of a modern realistic shell-model interaction for sd-shell nuclei, evidencing the progress that has been achieved during the last decades.
The no-core shell model and the effective interaction $V_{{\rm low} k}$ can both be derived using the Lee-Suzuki projection operator formalism. The main difference between the two is the choice of basis states that define the model space. The effective interaction $V_{{\rm low} k}$ can also be derived using the renormalization group. That renormalization group derivation can be extended in a straight forward manner to also include the no-core shell model. In the nuclear matter limit the no-core shell model effective interaction in the two-body approximation reduces identically to $V_{{\rm low}…
We discuss the use of the low-momentum nucleon-nucleon NN interaction V-low-k in the derivation of the shell-model effective interaction and emphasize its practical value as an alternative to the Brueckner G-matrix method. We present some selected results of our current study of exotic nuclei around closed shells, which have been obtained starting from the CD-Bonn potential. We also show some results of calculations performed with different phase-shift equivalent NN potentials, and discuss the effect of changes in the cutoff momentum which defines the V-low-k potential.
We study deep-inelastic scattering from polarized nuclei within a covariant framework. A clear connection is established between relativistic and non-relativistic limits, which enables a rigorous derivation of convolution formulae for the spin-dependent nuclear structure functions g_1^A and g_2^A in terms of off-mass-shell extrapolations of polarized nucleon structure functions, g_1^N and g_2^N. Approximate expressions for g_{1,2}^A are obtained by expanding the off-shell g_{1,2}^N about their on-shell limits. As an application of the formalism we consider nuclear effects in the deuteron, know…
We present a unified description of nuclear deep inelastic scattering (DIS) over the whole region $0<x<1$ of the Bjorken variable. Our approach is based on a relativistically covariant formalism which uses analytical properties of quark correlators. In the laboratory frame it naturally incorporates two mechanisms of DIS: (I) scattering from quarks and antiquarks in the target and (II) production of quark-antiquark pairs followed by interactions with the target. We first calculate structure functions of the free nucleon and develop a model for the quark spectral functions. We show that mechanis…
This paper discusses the derivation of an effective shell-model hamiltonian starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential by way of perturbation theory. More precisely, we present the state of the art of this approach when the starting point is the perturbative expansion of the Q-box vertex function. Questions arising from diagrammatics, intermediate-states and order-by-order convergences, and their dependence on the chosen nucleon-nucleon potential, are discussed in detail, and the results of numerical applications for the p-shell model space starting from chiral next-to-next-to-next-to…
We construct valence-space Hamiltonians for use in shell-model calculations, where the residual two-body interaction is based on symmetry principles and the low-momentum expansion from chiral effective field theory. In addition to the usual free-space contact interactions, we also include novel center-of-mass--dependent operators that arise due to the Galilean invariance breaking by in-medium effects. We fitted the low-energy constants to 441 ground- and excited-state energies in the sd shell and obtained a root-mean-square derivation of 1.8 MeV at leading order and of 0.5 MeV at next-to-leadi…
In this paper, we first give a brief review of the theoretical framework for microscopic shell-model calculations starting from the free nucleon-nucleon potential. In this context, we discuss the use of the low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction V-low-k in the derivation of the shell-model effective interaction and emphasize its practical value as an alternative to the Brueckner G-matrix method. Then, we present some results of our current study of exotic nuclei around doubly magic 132Sn, which have been obtained starting from the CD-Bonn potential renormalized by use of the V-low-k approach…
Background: Effective interactions, either derived from microscopic theories or based on fitting selected properties of nuclei in specific mass regions, are widely used inputs to shell-model studies of nuclei. Until recently, most shell-model calculations have been confined to a single oscillator shell. Recent interest in nuclei away from the stability line, requires however larger shell-model spaces. Since the derivation of microscopic effective interactions has been limited to degenerate model spaces, there are both conceptual and practical limits to present shell-model calculations that uti…
In the shell-model framework, valence-space Hamiltonians connecting multiple major-oscillator shells are of key interest for investigating the physics of neutron-rich nuclei, which have been the subject of intense experimental activity for decades. Here we present an extension of the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group which allows the derivation of such Hamiltonians nonperturbatively. Starting from initial two- and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory, we then calculate properties of nuclei in the important island-of-inversion region above oxy…
We study the infrared limit of the similarity renormalization group (SRG) using a simple toy model for the nuclear force aiming to investigate the fixed points of the SRG evolution with both the Wilson and the Wegner generators. We show how a fully diagonal interaction at the similarity cutoff $λ\rightarrow 0$ may be obtained from the eigenvalues of the hamiltonian and quantify the diagonalness by means of operator norms. While the fixed points for both generators are equivalent when no bound-states are allowed by the interaction, the differences arising from the presence of the Deuteron bound…
Within the $σ-ω$ model of coupled nucleon-meson systems, a generalized relativistic Lenard--Balescu--equation is presented resulting from a relativistic random phase approximation (RRPA). This provides a systematic derivation of relativistic transport equations in the frame of nonequilibrium Green's function technique including medium effects as well as fluctuation effects. It contains all possible processes due to one meson exchange and special attention is kept to the off--shell character of the particles. As a new feature of many particle effects, processes are possible which can be interpr…
The Kerman-Klein formulation of the equations of motion for a nuclear shell model and its associated variational principle are reviewed briefly. It is then applied to the derivation of the self-consistent particle-rotor model and of the self-consistent cranking model, for both axially symmetric and triaxial nuclei. Two derivations of the particle-rotor model are given. One of these is of a form that lends itself to an expansion of the result in powers of the ratio of single-particle angular momentum to collective angular momentum, that is essentual to reach the cranking limit. The derivation a…
Most nuclear structure calculations, even for full configuration interaction approaches, are performed within truncated model spaces. These require consistent transformations of the Hamiltonian and operators to account for the missing physics beyond the active space, so that several recent efforts have been devoted to find compatible derivations of the effective operators. The effective charges employed in the shell-model calculations, and fitted to reproduce experimental data, can be seen as the phenomenological counterpart of such renormalization for electromagnetic operators. Here, we make …
