In this work we investigate the effects of a non-minimally coupled quartic order scalar model on static neutron stars, with the non-minimal coupling in the Jordan frame being of the form $f(ϕ) = 1 + ξϕ^2$. Particularly we derive the Einstein frame Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, and by numerically integrating them for both the interior and the exterior of the neutron star, using a double shooting python 3 based numerical code, we extract the masses and radii of the neutron stars evaluated finally in the Jordan frame, along with several other related physical quantities of interest. With regard to the equation of state for the neutron star, we use a piecewise polytropic equation of state with the central part being Skyrme-Lyon (SLy), Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall (APR) or the Wiringa-Fiks-Fabrocini (WFF1) equations of state. The resulting $M-R$ graphs are compatible with the observational bounds imposed by the GW170817 event which require the radius of a static $M\sim 1.6 M_{\odot}$ neutron star to be larger than $R=10.68^{+15}_{-0.04}$km and the radius of a static neutron star corresponding to the maximum mass of the star to be larger than $R=9.6^{+0.14}_{-0.03}$km. Moreover, the WFF1 EoS, which was excluded for static neutron stars in the context of general relativity, for the a quartic order scalar model neutron star model provides realistic results compatible with the GW170817 event.
A general expression is given for the quartic Lovelock tensor in terms of the Riemann-Christoffel and Ricci curvature tensors and the Riemann curvature scalar for n-dimensional differentiable manifolds having a general linear connection. In addition, expressions are given (in the appendix) for the coefficient of the quartic Lovelock Lagrangian as well as for lower-order Lovelock tensors and Lovelock Lagrangian coefficients.
One-loop effective potential of scalar-tensor gravity with a quartic scalar field self-interaction is evaluated up to first post-Minkowskian order. The potential develops an instability in the strong field regime which is expected from an effective theory. Depending on model parameters the instability region can be exponentially far in a strong field region. Possible applications of the model for inflationary scenarios are highlighted. It is shown that the model can enter the slow-roll regime with a certain set of parameters.
In this paper we consider the complete momentum-independent quartic order truncation for the effective average action of a real Abelian rank 3 tensorial group field theory. This complete truncation includes non-melonic as well as double-trace interactions. In the usual functional renormalization group perspective, the inclusion of more operators that belong to the underlying theory space corresponds to an improvement of the truncation of the effective average action. We show that the inclusion of non-melonic and double-trace operators in the truncation brings subtleties. In particular, we disc…
Amplitudes of ordinary tensor models are dominated at large $N$ by the so-called melonic graph amplitudes. Enhanced tensor models extend tensor models with special scalings of their interactions which allow, in the same limit, that the sub-dominant amplitudes to be "enhanced", that is to be as dominant as the melonic ones. These models were introduced to explore new large $N$ limits and to probe different phases for tensor models. Tensor field theory is the quantum field theoretic counterpart of tensor models and enhanced tensor field theory enlarges this theory space to accommodate enhanced t…
Random tensor models are generalizations of random matrix models which admit $1/N$ expansions. In this article we show that the topological recursion, a modern approach to matrix models which solves the loop equations at all orders, is also satisfied in some tensor models. While it is obvious in some tensor models which are matrix models in disguise, it is far from clear that it can be applied to others. Here we focus on melonic interactions for which the models are best understood, and further restrict to the quartic case. Then Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation maps the tensor model to a mu…
Warm inflationary universe models in the context of generalized chaplygin gas, modified chaplygin gas, generalized cosmic chaplygin gas are being studied. The dissipative coefficient of the form $Γ\propto T$, weak and strong dissipative regimes are being considered. We use quartic potential $\frac{λ_{*}ϕ^{4}}{4}$, which is ruled out by current data in cold inflation but in our models it is analyzed that it is in agreement with the WMAP$9$ and latest Planck data. In these scenarios, the power spectrum, spectral index, and tensor to scalar ratio are being examined under the slow roll approximati…

Within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity, we investigate inflation with the quartic potential, $λφ^4/4$, in the presence of generalized Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_{\rm GBD}(φ)$. We obtain the inflationary observables containing the scalar spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, the running of the scalar spectral index and the equilateral non-Gaussianity parameter in terms of general form of the potential $U(φ)$ and $ω_{\rm GBD}(φ)$. For the quartic potential, our results show that the predictions of the model are in well agreement with the Planck 2015 data for the generalized Brans-Dicke …
We consider the sector of Horndeski's gravity characterized by the coupling between the kinetic scalar field term and the Einstein tensor. We numerically construct neutron star configurations where the external geometry is identical to the Schwarzschild metric but the interior structure is considerably different from standard general relativity. We constrain the only parameter of this model from the requirement that compact configurations exist, and we argue that solutions less compact than neutron stars, such as white dwarfs, are also supported. Therefore, our model provides an explicit modif…
We study structure of solutions of the recently constructed minimal extensions of Einstein's gravity in four dimensions at the quartic curvature level. The extended higher derivative theory, just like Einstein's gravity, has only a massless spin-two graviton about its unique maximally symmetric vacuum. The extended theory does not admit the Schwarzschild or Kerr metrics as exact solutions, hence there is no issue of Schwarzschild type singularity but, approximately, outside a source, spherically symmetric metric with the correct Newtonian limit is recovered. We also show that for all Einstein …
In the present paper we demonstrate that there exists a new type of neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity. We call this new type of neutron stars topological neutron stars. In addition to the standard characteristics of the usual neutron stars the topological neutron stars are also characterized by a topological charge. We numerical construct explicit examples of topological neutron stars in tensor-multi-scalar theories whose target space is $\mathbb{S}^3$. Besides the topological charge the topological neutron stars also exhibit other attractive features which can place…
We consider all degenerate scalar-tensor theories that depend quadratically on second order derivatives of a scalar field, which we have identified in a previous work. These theories, whose degeneracy in general ensures the absence of Ostrogradski instability, include the quartic Horndenski Lagrangian as well as its quartic extension beyond Horndeski, but also other families of Lagrangians. We study how all these theories transform under general conformal-disformal transformations and find that they can be separated into three main classes that are stable under these transformations. This lead…
In the present paper we study models of neutron stars in a class of extended scalar-tensor Gauss-Bonnet (ESTGB) theories for which the scalar degree of freedom is exited only in the strong curvature regime. We show that in the framework of the ESTGB theories under consideration there exist new neutron star solutions which are formed via spontaneous scalarization of the general relativistic neutron stars. In contrast to the spontaneous scalarization in the standard scalar-tensor theories which is induced by the presence of matter, in our case the scalarization is induced by the spacetime curvat…
Astrophysical charge-free black holes are known to satisfy no-hair relations through which all multipole moments can be specified in terms of just their mass and spin angular momentum. We here investigate the possible existence of no-hair-like relations among multipole moments for neutron stars and quark stars that are independent of their equation of state. We calculate the multipole moments of these stars up to hexadecapole order by constructing uniformly-rotating and unmagnetized stellar solutions to the Einstein equations. For slowly-rotating stars, we construct stellar solutions to quarti…
We construct models of slowly rotating, perfect-fluid neutron stars by extending the classical Hartle-Thorne formalism to generic scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Working at second order in the dimensionless angular momentum, we compute the mass M, radius R, scalar charge q, moment of inertia I and spin-induced quadrupole moment Q, as well as the tidal and rotational Love numbers. Our formalism applies to generic scalar-tensor theories, but we focus in particular on theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization. It was recently discovered that the moment of inertia, quadrupole moment and…
General relativity probably is not the definitive theory of gravity, due a number or issues, both from the theoretical and from the observational point of view. Alternative theories of gravity were conceived to extend general relativity and account for such issues. Among the most promising ones are scalar-tensor theories, which predict an enrichment of the phenomenology of compact objects, like neutron stars. We updated the well-tested XNS code to numerically solve the Einstein-Maxwell equations for a stationary, magnetised neutron star in a class of scalar-tensor theories containing the spont…
The maximum mass limits of neutron stars in scalar-tensor gravity is discussed and compared with the limits set by general relativity. The limit is parametrized with respect to the combination of the nuclear saturation parameters and the maximum sound velocity in the core. It is shown that, for smaller values of the sound velocity in the core, the maximum mass limit of the scalarized neutron stars is larger than that of in general relativity. However, for stiff equations of state with sound velocity higher than $79\%$ of the velocity of light, the maximum mass limit in general relativity is la…
In the present paper we consider special classes of massive tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity whose target space metric admits Killing field(s) with a periodic flow. For such tensor-multi-scalar theories we show that there exist mixed configurations of tenor-multi-scalar solitons and relativistic (neutron) stars. The influence of the curvature of the target space on the structure of the mixed configurations is studied for two explicit scalar-tensor theories. The stability of the obtained compact objects is examined and it turns out that the stability region spans to larger central energy…
In the scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field the coupling constants, and the coupling functions in general, which are observationally allowed, can differ significantly from those in the massless case. This fact naturally implies that the scalar-tensor neutron stars with a massive scalar field can have rather different structure and properties in comparison with their counterparts in the massless case and in general relativity. In the present paper we study slowly rotating neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories with a massive gravitational scalar. Two examples of scalar-tensor the…
We investigate inflationary dynamics in the framework of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the model under consideration, the inflaton field is non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant, so that the latter appears to be dynamically important. We consider a quartic potential for the inflaton field, in particular the one asymptotically connected to the Higgs inflation, and a wider class of coupling functions not considered in the earlier work. Keeping in mind the observational bounds on the parameters - the amplitude of scalar perturbations $A_s$, spectral index $n_s$ and…
A generic feature of scalar extensions of general relativity is the coupling of the scalar degrees of freedom to the trace $T$ of the energy-momentum tensor of matter fields. Interesting phenomenology arises when the trace becomes positive---when pressure exceeds one third of the energy density---a condition that may be satisfied in the core of neutron stars. In this work, we study how the positiveness of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor correlates with macroscopic properties of neutron stars. We first show that the compactness for which $T=0$ at the stellar center is approximately equa…
We review the status of the fourth-order (quartic in the spacetime curvature) terms induced by superstrings/M-theory (compactified on a warped torus) in the leading order with respect to the Regge slope parameter, and study their (non-perturbative) impact on the evolution of the Hubble scale in the context of the four-dimensional FRW cosmology. After taking into account the quantum ambiguities in the definition of the off-shell superstring effective action, we propose the generalized Friedmann equations, find the existence of their (de Sitter) exact inflationary solutions without a spacetime s…
We present the field equations governing the equilibrium of rapidly rotating neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories of gravity, as well as representative numerical solutions. The conditions for the presence of a nontrivial scalar field and the deviations from the general relativistic solutions are studied. Two examples of scalar-tensor theories are examined - one case that is equivalent to the Brans-Dicke theory and a second case, that is perturbatively equivalent to Einstein's General Relativity in the weak field regime, but can differ significantly for strong fields. Our numerical results s…
We carry out numerical-relativity simulations of coalescing binary neutron stars in a scalar-tensor theory that admits spontaneous scalarization. We model neutron stars with realistic equations of state. We choose the free parameters of the theory taking into account the constraints imposed by the latest observations of neutron-star-- white-dwarf binaries with pulsar timing. We show that even within those severe constraints, scalarization can still affect the evolution of the binary neutron stars not only during the late inspiral, but also during the merger stage. We also confirm that even whe…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity are natural phenomenological alternatives to General Relativity, where the gravitational interaction is mediated by a scalar degree of freedom, besides the usual tensor gravitons. In regions of the parameter space of these theories where constraints from both solar system experiments and binary-pulsar observations are satisfied, we show that binaries of neutron stars present marked differences from General Relativity in both the late-inspiral and merger phases. In particular, phenomena related to the spontaneous scalarization of isolated neutron stars take pla…
Binary systems containing boson stars---self-gravitating configurations of a complex scalar field--- can potentially mimic black holes or neutron stars as gravitational-wave sources. We investigate the extent to which tidal effects in the gravitational-wave signal can be used to discriminate between these standard sources and boson stars. We consider spherically symmetric boson stars within two classes of scalar self-interactions: an effective-field-theoretically motivated quartic potential and a solitonic potential constructed to produce very compact stars. We compute the tidal deformability …
Binary pulsar observations and gravitational wave detections seriously constrained scalar-tensor theories with massless scalar field allowing only small deviations from general relativity. If we consider a nonzero mass of the scalar field, though, significant deviations from general relativity are allowed for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. In the present paper we extend this idea and we study scalar-tensor theory with massive field with self-interaction term in the potential. The additional term suppresses the scalar field in the neutron star models in ad…
The observation of the x-ray pulse profile emitted by hotspots on the surface of neutron stars offers a unique tool to measure the bulk properties of these objects, including their masses and radii. The x-ray emission takes place at the star's surface, where the gravitational field is strong, making these observations an incise probe to examine the curvature of spacetime generated by these stars. Motivated by this and the upcoming data releases by x-ray missions, such as NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer), we present a complete toolkit to model pulse profiles of rotating neutro…
We compute families of spherically symmetric neutron-star models in two-derivative scalar-tensor theories of gravity with a massive scalar field. The numerical approach we present allows us to compute the resulting spacetimes out to infinite radius using a relaxation algorithm on a compactified grid. We discuss the structure of the weakly and strongly scalarized branches of neutron-star models thus obtained and their dependence on the linear and quadratic coupling parameters $α_0$, $β_0$ between the scalar and tensor sectors of the theory, as well as the scalar mass $μ$. For highly negative va…
Some models (such as the Skyrme model, a low-energy effective field theory for QCD) suggest that the high-density matter prevailing in neutron star interiors may be significantly anisotropic. Anisotropy is known to affect the bulk properties of nonrotating neutron stars in General Relativity. In this paper we study the effects of anisotropy on slowly rotating stars in General Relativity. We also consider one of the most popular extensions of Einstein's theory, namely scalar-tensor theories allowing for spontaneous scalarization (a phase transition similar to spontaneous magnetization in ferrom…
We investigate inflationary cosmology by solving the effective action of the M-theory, which consists of the 11 dimensional supergravity and quartic terms of the Weyl tensor. The metric is simply expressed by two scale factors, one for the spatial directions and the other for the internal directions. Since the effective action of the M-theory is constructed perturbatively, we also solve the equations of motion perturbatively. We will show that the classical solution of the 11 dimensional supergravity does not represent the inflationary expansion, but if we include the quantum corrections, the …
The masses and radii of neutron stars are discussed in general relativity and scalar-tensor theory of gravity and the differences are compared with the current uncertainties stemming from the nuclear equation of state in the relativistic mean-field framework. It is shown that astrophysical and gravitational waves observations of radii of neutron stars with masses $M \lesssim 1.4 M_{\odot}$ constrain only the nuclear equation of state, and in particular the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Future observations of massive neutron stars may constrain the coupling parameters of th…
Ferromagnetic spin ordering can take place in neutron stars. This phase transition alters the neutron star equation of state. Here, applying the scalar-tensor theories of gravity, we investigate the structure of neutron stars which are in the ferromagnetic phase. Considering the equation of state of ferromagnetic neutron matter with Skyrme-type interactions at zero temperature and using the scalar-tensor theories of gravity with sufficiently negative coupling constant, we explore the spontaneous scalarization in ferromagnetic neutron stars. In this regard, the mass versus the central density, …
We show that if the inflaton has a non-minimal coupling to gravity and the Planck scale is dynamically generated, the results of Coleman-Weinberg inflation are confined in between two attractor solutions: quadratic inflation, which is ruled out by the recent measurements, and linear inflation which, instead, is in the experimental allowed region. The minimal scenario has only one free parameter -- the inflaton's non-minimal coupling to gravity -- that determines all physical parameters such as the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the reheating temperature of the Universe. Should the more precise fut…
We consider configurations consisting of a neutron star with a wormhole at the core. The wormhole is held open by a ghost scalar field with a quartic coupling. The neutron matter is described by a perfect fluid with a polytropic equation of state. We obtain static regular solutions for these systems. A stability analysis, however, shows that they are unstable with respect to linear perturbations.
The spectrum of frequencies and characteristic times that compose the ringdown phase of gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars carries information about the matter content (the equation of state) and the underlying theory of gravity. Typically, modified theories of gravity introduce additional degrees of freedom/fields, such as scalars, which result in new families of modes composing the ringdown spectrum. Simple but physically promising candidates are scalar-tensor theories, which effectively introduce an additional massive scalar field (i.e. an ultra-light boson) that couples non-minim…
As we showed in previous work, the dynamics and gravitational emission of binary neutron star systems in certain scalar-tensor theories can differ significantly from that expected from General Relativity in the coalescing stage. In this work we examine whether the characteristics of the electromagnetic counterparts to these binaries -- driven by magnetosphere interactions prior to the merger event -- can provide an independent way to test gravity in the most strongly dynamical stages of binary mergers. We find that the electromagnetic flux emitted by binaries in these scalar-tensor theories ca…
The pulse profile from a neutron star in scalar-tensor theory of gravity is examined for several stellar models, where we assume the existence of the antipodal hot spots on the neutron star based on the polar cap model. Then, we find that the pulse profile from the scalarized neutron star in scalar-tensor gravity is almost the same as that in general relativity, i.e., without a scalar field, if the stellar compactness of the both stars is very similar. That is, the existence of the scalar field does not directly change the pulse profile from the neutron star, while the stellar compactness is c…
We study neutron star configurations in a simple shift-symmetric subfamily of degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories, whose deviations from General Relativity (GR) are characterized by a single parameter. We compute the radial profiles of neutron stars in these theories of modified gravity, using several realistic equations of state for the neutron star matter. We find neutron stars with masses and radii significantly larger than their GR counterparts. We then consider slowly-rotating solutions and determine the relation between the dimensionless moment of inertia and the compa…
Scalar-tensor theories are among the most promising alternatives to general relativity that have been developed to account for some long standing issues in our understanding of gravity. Some of these theories predict the existence of a non-linear phenomenon, spontaneous scalarisation, which can lead to the appearance of sizeable modifications to general relativity in the presence of compact matter distributions, namely neutron stars. On the one hand, one of the effects of the scalar field is to modify the emission of gravitational waves, both due to variations in the quadrupolar deformation of…
Neutron stars are ideal astrophysical sources to probe general relativity due to their large compactnesses and strong gravitational fields. For example, binary pulsar and gravitational wave observations have placed stringent bounds on certain scalar-tensor theories in which a massless scalar field is coupled to the metric through matter. A remarkable phenomenon of neutron stars in such scalar-tensor theories is spontaneous scalarization, where a normalized scalar charge remains order unity even if the matter-scalar coupling vanishes asymptotically far from the neutron star. While most works on…
Among the possible extensions of General Relativity that have been put forward in order to address some long standing issues in our understanding of the Universe, Scalar-Tensor Theories have received a lot of attention for their simplicity. Interestingly, some of these predict a potentially observable non-linear phenomenon, known as \textit{spontaneous scalarisation}, in the presence of highly compact matter distributions, like the case of neutron stars. Neutron stars are ideal laboratories to investigate the properties of matter under extreme conditions, and in particular they are known to ha…
We investigate the equilibrium and radial stability of spherically symmetric relativistic stars, considering a polytropic equation of state (EoS), within the framework of $f(R,T)$ gravity with a conservative energy-momentum tensor. Both modified stellar structure equations and Chandrasekhar's pulsation equations are derived for the $f(R,T)= R+ h(T)$ gravity model, where the function $h(T)$ assumes a specific form in order to safeguard the conservation equation for the energy-momentum tensor. The neutron star properties, such as radius, mass, binding energy and oscillation spectrum are studied …
In $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we study the properties of black holes (BH) on a static and spherically symmetric background. In shift-symmetric theories invariant under the shift of scalar $ϕ\to ϕ+c$, we show the existence of new hairy BH solutions where a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction gives rise to a scalar hair manifesting itself around the event horizon. In the presence of a quartic-order interaction besides the cubic coupling, there are also regular BH solutions endowed with scalar and vector hairs.
We are investigating universal relations between different normalisations of the moment of inertia and the compactness of neutron stars in slow rotation approximation. We study the relations in particular class of massive scalar-sensor theories with self-interaction, for which significant deviations from General Relativity are allowed for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. Moment of inertia-compactness relations are examined for different normalisation of the moment of inertia. It is shown that for all studied cases the deviations from EOS universality are sm…
We consider the evolution of cosmological gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theory and $F(R)$ gravity theory as typical models of the modified gravity. Although the propagation speed is not changed from the speed of light, the propagation phase changes when we compare the propagation in these modified gravity theories with the propagation in the $Λ$CDM model. The phase change might be detected in future observations.
We use neutron star mass and radius measurements to constrain the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in scalar-tensor theories using Bayesian analysis. Neutron star structures in this scenario can be significantly different from the case of general relativity, which can be used to constrain the theory parameters. We utilize this idea to obtain lower bounds on the coupling parameter $β$ for the case of massless scalars. These constraints are currently weaker than the ones coming from binary observations, and they have relatively low precision due to the approximations in our method. Neverthel…
We systematically examine the compactness of neutron stars as Tolman VII solutions in scalar-tensor theory of gravity. As a result, when the coupling constant is confined to values provided by astronomical observations we show that the maximum compactness of neutron stars in general relativity is higher than that in scalar-tensor gravity. In addition, we show that although ultra-compact stars, with radius smaller than the Regge-Wheeler potential peak, can exist in general relativity (e.g., Tolman VII solution), their scalarized counterparts cannot {be constructed} even in the limiting case of …
We study torsional oscillations of neutron stars in the scalar-tensor theory of gravity using the relativistic Cowling approximation. We compute unperturbed neutron star models adopting realistic equations of state for the neutron star's core and crust. For scalar-tensor theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization, the crust thickness can be significantly smaller than in general relativity. We derive the perturbation equation describing torsional oscillations in scalar-tensor theory, and we solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem to find the oscillation frequencies. The fundamental mo…
