Among the possible extensions of General Relativity that have been put forward in order to address some long standing issues in our understanding of the Universe, Scalar-Tensor Theories have received a lot of attention for their simplicity. Interestingly, some of these predict a potentially observable non-linear phenomenon, known as \textit{spontaneous scalarisation}, in the presence of highly compact matter distributions, like the case of neutron stars. Neutron stars are ideal laboratories to investigate the properties of matter under extreme conditions, and in particular they are known to harbour the strongest magnetic fields in the Universe. Here, for the first time, we present a detailed study of magnetised neutron stars in Scalar-Tensor Theories. First, we show that the formalism developed for the study of magnetised neutron stars in General Relativity, based on the \textit{eXtended Conformally Flat Condition}, can easily be extended in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field, retaining many of its numerical advantages. We then carry out a study of the parameter space considering the two extreme geometries of purely toroidal and purely poloidal magnetic fields, varying both the strength of the magnetic field and the intensity of scalarisation. We compare our results with magnetised general-relativistic solutions and un-magnetised scalarised solutions, showing how the mutual interplay between magnetic and scalar fields affect the magnetic and the scalarisation properties of neutron stars. In particular, we focus our discussion on magnetic deformability, maximum mass and range of scalarisation.
General relativity probably is not the definitive theory of gravity, due a number or issues, both from the theoretical and from the observational point of view. Alternative theories of gravity were conceived to extend general relativity and account for such issues. Among the most promising ones are scalar-tensor theories, which predict an enrichment of the phenomenology of compact objects, like neutron stars. We updated the well-tested XNS code to numerically solve the Einstein-Maxwell equations for a stationary, magnetised neutron star in a class of scalar-tensor theories containing the spont…
In this review we discuss self-consistent methods to calculate the global structure of strongly magnetised neutron stars within the general-relativistic framework. We outline why solutions in spherical symmetry cannot be applied to strongly magnetised compact stars, and elaborate on a consistent formalism to compute rotating magnetised neutron star models. We also discuss an application of the above full numerical solution for studying the influence of strong magnetic fields on the radius and crust thickness of magnetars. The above technique is also applied to construct a "universal" magnetic …

The origin of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) is still mysterious. All FRBs to date show extremely high brightness temperatures, requiring a coherent emission mechanism. Using constraints derived from the physics of one of these mechanisms, the synchrotron maser, as well as observations, we show that accretion induced explosions of neutron stars with surface magnetic fields of $B_*\lesssim10^{11}$ G are favoured as FRB progenitors.
We perform three-dimensional (3D) general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations to model the jet break-out from the ejecta expected to be produced in a binary neutron-star merger. The structure of the relativistic outflow from the 3D simulation confirms our previous results from 2D simulations, namely, that a relativistic magnetized outflow breaking out from the merger ejecta exhibits a hollow core of $θ_{\rm core}\approx4^{\circ}$, an opening angle of $θ_{\rm jet}\gtrsim10^{\circ}$, and is accompanied by a wind of ejected matter that will contribute to the kilonova emission. We also co…
The observations of GW170817/GRB170817A have confirmed that the coalescence of a neutron-star binary is the progenitor of a short gamma-ray burst. In the standard picture of a short gamma-ray burst, a collimated highly relativistic outflow is launched after merger and it successfully breaks out from the surrounding ejected matter. Using initial conditions inspired from numerical-relativity binary neutron-star merger simulations, we have performed general-relativistic hydrodynamic (HD) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in which the jet is launched and propagates self-consistently. The c…
We investigate the impact of using high-order numerical methods to study the merger of magnetised neutron stars with finite-temperature microphysics and neutrino cooling in full general relativity. By implementing a fourth-order accurate conservative finite-difference scheme we model the inspiral together with the early post-merger and highlight the differences to traditional second-order approaches at the various stages of the simulation. We find that even for finite-temperature equations of state, convergence orders higher than second order can be achieved in the inspiral and post-merger for…
A model of population of ultraluminous X-ray sources with magnetised neutron stars (NULX) in a spiral galaxy with the star formation history similar to that in the thin disc of Milky Way is computed using a hybrid approach. First, applying analytical approximations (code BSE) we construct the ensemble of close binaries (CBS) which can be potential precursors of NULX. Next, evolution with accretion onto magnetised neutron stars (NS) is computed by the evolutionary code MESA. Accretion rate onto NS and X-ray luminosity are calculated for the models of sub- and supercritical discs and for the dis…
Relativistic jets are observed throughout the Universe, strongly impacting their surrounding environments on all physical scales, from Galactic binary systems to galaxies and galaxy clusters. An important avenue to understand the formation of these jets is by characterising the systems and circumstances from which they are launched. Whenever a black hole or neutron star accretes matter, it appears to inevitably result in the launching of a jet, the only exception being the most common type of accreting neutron stars: those with strong ($B \geq 10^{12}$ G) magnetic fields. This exception has cr…
Merging neutron stars are expected to produce hot, metastable remnants in rapid differential rotation, which subsequently cool and evolve into rigidly rotating neutron stars or collapse to black holes. Studying this metastable phase and its further evolution is essential for the prediction and interpretation of the electromagnetic, neutrino, and gravitational signals from such a merger. In this work, we model binary neutron star merger remnants and propose new rotation and thermal laws that describe post-merger remnants. Our framework is capable to reproduce quasi-equilibrium configurations fo…
We present solutions of force-free pulsar magnetospheres coupled with a uniform external magnetic field aligned with the dipole magnetic moment of the pulsar. The inclusion of the uniform magnetic field has the following consequences: The equatorial current sheet is truncated to a finite length, the fraction of field lines that are open increases, and the open field lines are confined within a cylindrical surface instead of becoming radial. A strong external magnetic field antiparallel to the dipole allows for solutions where the pulsar magnetic field is fully enclosed within an ellipsoidal su…

Magnetar magnetospheres gradually become twisted due to shearing by footpoint motion. The axisymmetric solutions for the force-free field with a power-law current model are calculated by taking into account general relativistic effects. Here we show how the magnetic energy and helicity are accumulated along a sequence of equilibria. In a strongly twisted case, a magnetic flux rope, in which a large amount of toroidal field is confined, detaches in the vicinity of the star. It is found this kind of magnetic field line structure is easily produced due to strong relativistic effects compared with…
Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that the only stationary configuration of an isolated black hole is the Kerr spacetime, which has a unique multipolar structure and a spherical shape when non-spinning. This is in striking contrast to the case of other self-gravitating objects, which instead can in principle have arbitrary deformations even in the static case. Here we develop a general perturbative framework to construct stationary stars with small axisymmetric deformations, and study explicitly compact stars with an intrinsic quadrupole moment. The latter can be sustained, for …
Isolated Neutron Stars are known to be endowed with extreme magnetic fields, whose maximum intensity ranges from 10^12 to 10^15 G, which permeates their magnetospheres. Their surrounding environment is also strongly magnetised, especially in the compact nebulae powered by the relativistic wind from young neutron stars. The radiation from isolated neutron stars and their surrounding nebulae is, thus, supposed to bring a strong polarisation signature. Measuring the neutron star polarisation brings important information on the properties of their magnetosphere and of their highly magnetised envir…
Pulsating ultra-luminous X-ray sources (PULXs) are characterised by an extremely large luminosity ($ > 10^{40} \text{erg s}^{-1}$). While there is a general consensus that they host an accreting, magnetized neutron star (NS), the problem of how to produce luminosities $> 100$ times the Eddington limit, $L_E$, of a solar mass object is still debated. A promising explanation relies on the reduction of the opacities in the presence of a strong magnetic field, which allows for the local flux to be much larger than the Eddington flux. However, avoiding the onset of the propeller effect may be a ser…

We investigate the nature of the ULX M81 X-6, which has been suggested to harbour a neutron star (NS), by studying its long-term X-ray spectral and temporal evolution, using the rich set of available archival data from XMM-Newton, Chandra, NuSTAR, and Swift/XRT. We tracked the evolution of the source on the hardness-intensity diagram and find that the source oscillates between two main states: one characterised by a hard and luminous spectrum and the other at low hardness and luminosity. The properties of the soft component remain constant between the two states, suggesting that changes in the…
We present the first systematic study of the gravitational collapse of rotating and magnetised neutron stars to charged and rotating (Kerr-Newman) black holes. In particular, we consider the collapse of magnetised and rotating neutron stars assuming that no pair-creation takes place and that the charge density in the magnetosphere is so low that the stellar exterior can be described as an electrovacuum. Under these assumptions, which are rather reasonable for a pulsar that has crossed the 'death line', we show that when the star is rotating, it acquires a net initial electrical charge, which i…
In this work we study the structure of neutron stars under the effect of a poloidal magnetic field and determine the limiting highest magnetic field intensity which still allows a satisfactory description of magnetic neutron stars in the spherical symmetry regime. We describe different compositions of stars (nucleonic, hyperonic, and hybrid), using three state-of-the-art relativistic mean field models for the microscopic description of matter, which are in agreement with experimental and observational data. The structure of stars is described by the general relativistic solution of both Einste…
Even though the crystallize nature of the neutron star crust plays a pivotal role in describing various fascinating astrophysical observations, its microscopic structure is not fully understood in the presence of a colossal magnetic field. In the present work, we study the crustal properties of a neutron star within an effective relativistic mean field framework in the presence of magnetic field strength $\sim 10^{17}$G. We calculate the equilibrium composition of the outer crust by minimizing the Gibbs free energy using the most recent atomic mass evaluations. The magnetic field significantly…
The evolution of the gravitational-wave phase in the signal produced by inspiralling binaries of compact stars is modified by the nonzero deformability of the two stars. Hence, the measurement of these corrections has the potential of providing important information on the equation of state of nuclear matter. Extensive work has been carried out over the last decade to quantify these corrections, but it has so far been restricted to stars with zero intrinsic magnetic fields. While the corrections introduced by the magnetic tension and magnetic pressure are expected to be subdominant, it is neve…
We calculate axisymmetric spheroidal modes of neutron stars magnetized with an axisymmetric poloidal magnetic field. We use polytropes of the indices $n\sim1$ as background equilibrium models of neutron stars where we ignore the deformation due to the magnetic fields. For a poloidal magnetic field, axisymmetric normal modes of non-rotating stars are decoupled into spheroidal modes and toroidal modes, and we can treat spheroidal modes separately from toroidal modes. For the surface field strength $B_S$ ranging from $10^{14}$G to $10^{16}$G, we calculate axisymmetric spheroidal magnetic modes wh…
Stars of spectral types O and B produce neutron stars (NSs) after supernova explosions. Most of NSs are strongly magnetised including normal radio pulsars with $B \propto 10^{12}$ G and magnetars with $B\propto 10^{14}$ G. A fraction of 7-12 per cent of massive stars are also magnetised with $B\propto 10^3$ G and some are weakly magnetised with $B\propto 1$ G. It was suggested that magnetic fields of NSs could be the fossil remnants of magnetic fields of their progenitors. This work is dedicated to study this hypothesis. First, we gather all modern precise measurements of surface magnetic fiel…
Neutron stars host the strongest magnetic fields that we know of in the Universe. Their magnetic fields are the main means of generating their radiation, either magnetospheric or through the crust. Moreover, the evolution of the magnetic field has been intimately related to explosive events of magnetars, which host strong magnetic fields, and their persistent thermal emission. The evolution of the magnetic field in the crusts of neutron stars has been described within the framework of the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation. Yet, this description is limited by the fact that the Maxwell stresses …
We report new radio observations of a sample of thirty-six neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries, more than doubling the sample in the literature observed at current-day sensitivities. These sources include thirteen weakly-magnetised ($B<10^{10}$ G) and twenty-three strongly-magnetised ($B\geq10^{10}$ G) NSs. Sixteen of the latter category reside in high-mass X-ray binaries, of which only two systems were radio-detected previously. We detect four weakly and nine strongly-magnetised NSs; the latter are systematically radio fainter than the former and do not exceed $L_R \approx 3\times10^{28}$ erg/s.…
A magnetar's magnetosphere gradually evolves by the injection of energy and helicity from the interior. Axisymmetric static solutions for a relativistic force-free magnetosphere with a power-law current model are numerically obtained. They provide information about the configurations in which the stored energy is large. The energy along a sequence of equilibria increases and becomes sufficient to open the magnetic field. A magnetic flux rope, in which a large amount of toroidal field is confined, is formed in the vicinity of the star, for states exceeding the open field energy. These states ar…
The Ernst formulation of the Einstein equations is generalised to accommodate $f(R)$ theories of gravity. It is shown that, as in general relativity, the axisymmetric $f(R)$ field equations for a vacuum spacetime that is either stationary or cylindrically symmetric reduce to a single, non-linear differential equation for a complex-valued scalar function. As a worked example, we apply the generalised Ernst equations to derive a $f(R)$ generalisation of the Zipoy-Voorhees metric, which may be used to describe the gravitational field outside of an ellipsoidal neutron star. We also apply the theor…
The binary neutron star merger GW170817/GRB170817A confirmed that at least some neutron star mergers are the progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts. Many short gamma-ray bursts have long-term x-ray afterglows that have been interpreted in terms of post-merger millisecond magnetars---rapidly rotating, highly magnetised, massive neutron stars. We review our current understanding of millisecond magnetars born in short gamma-ray bursts, focusing particularly three main topics. First, whether millisecond magnetars really do provide the most plausible explain for the x-ray plateau. Second, determinin…
We calculate axisymmetric magnetic modes of a neutron star possessing a mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic field, where the toroidal field is assumed to be proportional to a dimensionless parameter $ζ_0$. Here, we assume an isentropic structure for the neutron star and consider no effects of rotation. Ignoring the equilibrium deformation due to the magnetic field, we employ a polytrope of the index $n=1$ as the background model for our modal analyses. For the mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic field with $ζ_0\not=0$, axisymmetric spheroidal and toroidal modes are coupled. We compute axisym…
Based on new Chandra X-ray telescope data, we present empirical evidence of plasma Compton cooling during a flare in the non pulsating massive X-ray binary 4U1700-37. This behaviour might be explained by quasispherical accretion onto a slowly rotating magnetised neutron star. In quiescence, the neutron star in 4U1700-37 is surrounded by a hot radiatively cooling shell. Its presence is supported by the detection of mHz quasi periodic oscillations likely produced by its convection cells. The high plasma temperature and the relatively low X-ray luminosity observed during the quiescence, point to …
We investigate the impact of strong initial magnetic fields in core-collapse supernovae of non-rotating progenitors by simulating the collapse and explosion of a 16.9 Msun star for a strong- and weak-field case assuming a twisted-torus field with initial central field strengths of ~1012 G and ~106 G. The strong-field model has been set up with a view to the fossil-field scenario for magnetar formation and emulates a pre-collapse field configuration that may occur in massive stars formed by a merger. This model undergoes shock revival already 100 s after bounce and reaches an explosion energy o…
We calculate non-axisymmetric oscillations of neutron stars magnetized by purely poloidal magnetic fields. We use polytropes of index $n=1$ and 1.5 as a background model, where we ignore the equilibrium deformation due to the magnetic field. Since separation of variables is not possible for the oscillation of magnetized stars, we employ finite series expansions for the perturbations using spherical harmonic functions. Solving the oscillation equations as the boundary and eigenvalue problem, we find two kinds of discrete magnetic modes, that is, stable (oscillatory) magnetic modes and unstable …
Observations of short gamma-ray bursts indicate ongoing energy injection following the prompt emission, with the most likely candidate being the birth of a rapidly rotating, highly magnetised neutron star. We utilise X-ray observations of the burst remnant to constrain properties of the nascent neutron star, including its magnetic field-induced ellipticity and the saturation amplitude of various oscillation modes. Moreover, we derive strict upper limits on the gravitational wave emission from these objects by looking only at the X-ray light curve, showing the burst remnants are unlikely to be …
Over the past several years, there has been enormous interest in massive neutron stars and white dwarfs due to either their direct or indirect evidence. The recent detection of gravitational wave event GW190814 has confirmed the existence of compact stars with masses as high as $\sim2.5-2.67M_{\odot}$ within the so-called mass gap, indicating the existence of highly massive neutron stars. One of the primary goals to invoke massive compact objects was to explain the recent detections of over a dozen Type Ia supernovae, whose peculiarity lies with their unusual light curve, in particular the hig…

Magnetic field evolution in neutron-star crusts is driven by the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation, for as long as the crust is sufficiently strong to absorb Maxwell stresses exerted by the field and thus make the momentum equation redundant. For the strongest neutron-star fields, however, stresses build to the point of crustal failure, at which point the standard evolution equations are no longer valid. Here, we study the evolution of the magnetic field of the crust up to and beyond crustal failure, whence the crust begins to flow plastically. We perform global axisymmetric evolutions, explor…
We present a systematic study of magnetised neutron star head on collisions. We investigate the resulting magnetic field geometries as the two neutron stars merge. Furthermore, we analyze the luminosity produced in these collisions and monitor the evolution of the magnetic fields from the time of merger until the subsequent production of a black hole. At the time of black hole formation the luminosity peaks and rings-down following the decay of the electromagnetic fields. A comparison is presented for three different cases, one where the initial magnetic field in both neutron stars is aligned,…
