Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that the only stationary configuration of an isolated black hole is the Kerr spacetime, which has a unique multipolar structure and a spherical shape when non-spinning. This is in striking contrast to the case of other self-gravitating objects, which instead can in principle have arbitrary deformations even in the static case. Here we develop a general perturbative framework to construct stationary stars with small axisymmetric deformations, and study explicitly compact stars with an intrinsic quadrupole moment. The latter can be sustained, for instance, by crust stresses or strong magnetic fields. While our framework is general, we focus on quadrupolar deformations of neutron stars induced by an anisotropic crust, which continuously connect to spherical neutron stars in the isotropic limit. Deformed neutron stars might provide a more accurate description for stellar remnants formed in supernovae and in binary mergers, and can be used to improve constraints on the neutron-star equation of state through gravitational-wave detections and through the observation of low-mass X-ray binaries. We argue that, if the (dimensionless) intrinsic quadrupole moment is of a few percent or higher, the effect of the deformation is stronger than that of tidal interactions in coalescing neutron-star binaries, and might also significantly affect the electromagnetic signal from accreting neutron stars.
Analyzing the Influence of Geometrical Deformation on Photon Sphere and Shadow Radius: A New Analytical Approach -Stationary, and Axisymmetric Spacetime
We present the first stationary, axisymmetric neutron star models with meridional circulation in general relativity. For that purpose, we developed GRNS, a new code based on a fixed point iteration. We find a two-dimensional set of meridional circulation modes, which differ by the number of vortices in the stream lines of the neutron star fluid. For expected maximal meridional circulation velocities of about 1000 km/s, the vortices cause surface deformations of about a percent. The deformations depend on the shape of the vortices close to the surface and increase with the meridional circulatio…

We present new results on dynamical instabilities in rapidly rotating neutron-stars. In particular, using numerical simulations in full General Relativity, we analyse the effects that the stellar compactness has on the threshold for the onset of the dynamical bar-mode instability, as well as on the appearance of other dynamical instabilities. By using an extrapolation technique developed and tested in our previous study [1], we explicitly determine the threshold for a wide range of compactnesses using four sequences of models of constant baryonic mass comprising a total of 59 stellar models. O…
General relativity probably is not the definitive theory of gravity, due a number or issues, both from the theoretical and from the observational point of view. Alternative theories of gravity were conceived to extend general relativity and account for such issues. Among the most promising ones are scalar-tensor theories, which predict an enrichment of the phenomenology of compact objects, like neutron stars. We updated the well-tested XNS code to numerically solve the Einstein-Maxwell equations for a stationary, magnetised neutron star in a class of scalar-tensor theories containing the spont…
We investigate the existence of non axisymmetric solutions in the 6-dimensional baby-Skyrme brane model. The brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extra dimensions. Such non symmetric branes have already been constructed in the original 2+1-dimensional baby-Skyrme model in flat space. We generalize this result to the case of gravitating baby-Skyrme and in the context of extradimensions. These non-trivial deformation from the axisymmetric shape appear for higher values of the topological charge, so we consider the cases of $B=3,4$, where $B$ is the…

Gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes provide a suitable arena to test the fundamental nature of gravity in the strong-field regime. Using the data of the inspiral of 29 events detected by the LIGO-Virgo observatories, we perform a theory-agnostic test of the Kerr hypothesis. We compute the leading-order deviation to the gravitational waves emitted in the frequency domain and provide constraints on two deformation parameters ($δ_1$ and $δ_2$) belonging to a general class of axisymmetric non-Kerr black hole spacetimes proposed by Konoplya, Rezzolla & Zhidenko. Our study shows th…

We develop a new perturbation method for determining a class of time transfer functions in a stationary spacetime when its metric is a small deformation of a background metric for which the time transfer functions are known in a closed form. The perturbation terms are expressed as line integrals along the null geodesic paths of the background metric. Unlike what happens with the other procedures proposed until now, the time transfer functions obtained in this way are completely free of unbounded terms and do not generate any enhancement in the light travel time. Our procedure proves to be very…
An evolving Japanese gravitational-wave (GW) mission in the deci-Hz band: B-DECIGO (DECihertz laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) will enable us to detect GW150914-like binary black holes, GW170817-like binary neutron stars, and intermediate-mass binary black holes out to cosmological distances. The B-DECIGO band slots in between the aLIGO-Virgo-KAGRA-IndIGO (hecto-Hz) and LISA (milli-Hz) bands for broader bandwidth; the sources described emit GWs for weeks to years across the multiband to accumulate high signal-to-noise ratios. This suggests the possibility that joint detecti…
Neutron stars are known to host extremely powerful magnetic fields. Among other effects, one of the consequences of harbouring such fields is the deformation of the neutron star structure, leading, together with rotation, to the emission of continuous gravitational waves. On the one hand, the details of their internal magnetic fields are mostly unknown. Likewise, their internal structure, encoded by the equation of state, is highly uncertain. Here we present a study of axisymmetric models of isolated magnetised neutron stars, for various realistic equations of state considered viable by observ…
Neutron stars harbour extremely powerful magnetic fields, leading to their shape being deformed. Their magnetic deformation depends both on the geometry - and strength - of their internal magnetic field and on their composition, encoded by the equation of state. However, both the details of the internal magnetic structure and the equation of state of the innermost part of neutron stars are mostly unkown. We performed a study of numerical models of magnetised, static, axisymmetric neutron stars in general relativity and in one of its most promising extensions, scalar-tensor theories. We did so …
We review the problem of describing the gravitational field of compact stars in general relativity. We focus on the deviations from spherical symmetry which are expected to be due to rotation and to the natural deformations of mass distributions. We assume that the relativistic quadrupole moment takes into account these deviations, and consider the class of axisymmetric static and stationary quadrupolar metrics which satisfy Einstein's equations in empty space and in the presence of matter represented by a perfect fluid. We formulate the physical conditions that must be satisfied for a particu…
We discuss the response of neutron stars to the tidal interaction in a compact binary system, as encoded in the Love number associated with the induced deformation. This problem is of interest for gravitational-wave astronomy as there may be a detectable imprint on the signal from the late stages of binary coalescence. Previous work has focussed on simple barotropic neutron star models, providing an understanding of the role of the stellar compactness and overall density profile. We add realism to the discussion by developing the framework required to model stars with varying composition and a…
We show how to reduce the general formulation of the mass-angular momentum-charge inequality, for axisymmetric initial data of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, to the known maximal case whenever a geometrically motivated system of equations admits a solution. It is also shown that the same reduction argument applies to the basic inequality yielding a lower bound for the area of black holes in terms of mass, angular momentum, and charge. This extends previous work by the authors [4] (arXiv:1401.3384), in which the role of charge was omitted. Lastly, we improve upon the hypotheses required for th…

With the doors beginning to swing open on the new gravitational wave astronomy, this review provides an up-to-date survey of the most important physical mechanisms that could lead to emission of potentially detectable gravitational radiation from isolated and accreting neutron stars. In particular we discuss the gravitational wave-driven instability and asteroseismology formalism of the f- and r-modes, the different ways that a neutron star could form and sustain a non-axisymmetric quadrupolar "mountain" deformation, the excitation of oscillations during magnetar flares and the possible gravit…
Gravitational wave astronomy is expected to provide independent constraints on neutron star properties, such as their dense matter equation of state. This is possible with the measurements of binary components' tidal deformability, which alter the point-particle gravitational waveforms of the late inspiral phase of neutron-star binaries. Although current gravitational wave detectors are not sensitive enough for a precise determination of the individual tidal deformations of the components, a large number of combined observations with future detectors will decrease uncertainties in this quantit…
We perform dynamical and nonlinear numerical simulations to study critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of massless scalar fields in the absence of spherical symmetry. We evolve axisymmetric sets of initial data and examine the effects of deviation from spherical symmetry. For small deviations we find values for the critical exponent and echoing period of the discretely self-similar critical solution that agree well with established values; moreover we find that such small deformations behave like damped oscillations whose damping coefficient and oscillation frequencies are consiste…
We revisit the spectrum of linear axisymmetric gravitational perturbations of the (near-)extreme Kerr black hole. Our aim is to characterise those perturbations that are responsible for the deviations away from extremality, and to contrast them with the linearized perturbations treated in the Newman-Penrose formalism. For the near horizon region of the (near-)extreme Kerr solution, i.e. the (near-)NHEK background, we provide a complete characterisation of axisymmetric modes. This involves an infinite tower of propagating modes together with the much subtler low-lying mode sectors that contain …
The LIGO's discovery of binary black hole mergers has opened up a new era of transient gravitational wave astronomy. The potential detection of gravitational radiation from another class of astronomical objects, rapidly spinning non-axisymmetric neutron stars, would constitute a new area of gravitational wave astronomy. Scorpius X-1 (Sco X-1) is one of the most promising sources of continuous gravitational radiation to be detected with present-generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors, such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. As the sensitivity of these detectors improve in the com…
