Let $Γ_{F,n}$ be the Hermitian modular group of degree $n>1$ in sense of Hel Braun with respect to an imaginary quadratic field $F$. Let $r$ be a natural number. There exists a multiplier system of weight $1/r$ (equivalently a Hermitian modular form of weight $k+1/r$, $k$ integral) on some congruence group if and only if $r=1$ or $2$. This follows from a much more general construction of Deligne [De] combining it with results of Hill [Hi], Prasad [P] and Prasad-Rapinchuk [PR]. As far as we know, the systems of weight $1/2$ have not yet been described explicitly. Remarkably Haowu Wang [Wa] gave an example of a modular form of half integral weight. Actually he constructs a Borcherds product of weight $23/2$ for a group of type $O(2,4)$. This group is isogenous to the group $U(2,2)$ that contains the Hermitian modular groups of degree two. In this paper we want to study such multiplier systems. If one restricts them to the unimodular group one obtains a usual character. Our main result states that the kernel of this character is a non-congruence subgroup. For sufficiently small $Γ$ it coincides with the group described by Kubota in the case $n=2$ and by Bass Milnor Serre in the case $n>2$.
In this paper we first prove an isomorphism between certain spaces of Jacobi forms. Using this isomorphism, we study the mod $p$ theory of Hermitian Jacobi forms over $\mathbb{Q}(i)$. We then apply the mod $p$ theory of Hermitian Jacobi forms to characterize $U(p)$ congruences and to study Ramanujan-type congruences for Hermitian Jacobi forms and Hermitian modular forms of degree $2$ over $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.
Deligne proved that the weights of Siegel modular forms on any congruence subgroup of the Siegel modular group of genus g>1 must be integral or half integral. We give a different proof for this. It uses Mennicke's result that subgroups of finite index of the Siegel modular group are congruence subgroups and some techniques from a paper of Bass-Milnor-Serre.
We give generators and relations for the graded rings of Hermitian modular forms of degree two over the rings of integers in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-7})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-11})$. In both cases we prove that the subrings of symmetric modular forms are generated by Maass lifts. The computation uses a reduction process against Borcherds products which also leads to a dimension formula for the spaces of modular forms.
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and $\mathfrak{o}$ the ring of integers of $F$. We study theta functions which are Hilbert modular forms of half-integral weight for the Hilbert modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathfrak{o})$. We obtain an equivalent condition that there exists a multiplier system of half-integral weight for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathfrak{o})$. We determine the condition of $F$ that there exists a theta function which is a Hilbert modular form of half-integral weight for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathfrak{o})$. The theta function is defined by a sum on a fractional ideal $\mathfrak{a}$ of $…
For any natural number $\ell $ and any prime $p\equiv 1 \pmod{4}$ not dividing $\ell $ there is a Hermitian modular form of arbitrary genus $n$ over $L:=\Q [\sqrt{-\ell}]$ that is congruent to 1 modulo $p$ which is a Hermitian theta series of an $O_L$-lattice of rank $p-1$ admitting a fixed point free automorphism of order $p$. It is shown that also for non-free lattices such theta series are modular forms.
The mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator is the set of modular forms whose image of the theta operator is congruent to zero modulo a prime $p$. In the case of Siegel modular forms, the authors found interesting examples of such modular forms. For example, Igusa's odd weight cusp form is an element of mod 23 kernel of the theta operator. In this paper, we give some examples which represent elements in the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator in the case of Hermitian modular forms of degree 2.
Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ its maximal discrete extension in the special unitary group $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we study the action of $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ on Hermitian theta series and Maass spaces. For $n=2$ we will find theta lattices such that the corresponding theta series are modular forms with respect to $Δ_{2,\mathbb{K}}^*$ as well as examples where this is not the case. Our second focus lies on studying two different Maass sp…
We investigate the structure of the Hecke algebras related to the unimodular and modular group over hermitian fields and definite quaternion algebras. In particular we show that in general there is no decomposition into primary components. We can give a set of generators and in some special cases we deduce the law of interchange of the Siegel $Φ$-operator.
We determine the structure over $\mathbb{Z}$ of the ring of symmetric Hermitian modular forms with respect to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ of degree $2$ (with a character), whose Fourier coefficients are integers. Namely, we give a set of generators consisting of $24$ modular forms. As an application of our structure theorem, we give the Sturm bounds of such the modular forms of weight $k$ with $4\mid k$, in the case $p=2$, $3$. We remark that the bounds for $p\ge 5$ are already known.
In this paper we outline the Hecke theory for Hermitian modular forms in the sense of Hel Braun for arbitrary class number of the attached imaginary-quadratic number field. The Hecke algebra turns out to be commutative. Its inert part has a structure analogous to the case of the Siegel modular group and coincides with the tensor product of its $p$-components for inert primes $p$. This leads to a characterization of the associated Siegel-Eisenstein series. The proof also involves Hecke theory for particular congruence subgroups.
We give two congruence properties of Hermitian modular forms of degree 2 over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$. The one is a congruence criterion for Hermitian modular forms which is generalization of Sturm's theorem. Another is the well-definedness of the $p$-adic weight for Hermitian modular forms.
We study the algebras of hermitian automorphic forms for the lattice $L_n=diag(1,1,\ldots,1,-1)$ and for the field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ such that $p=2$ is unramified and the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ is a p.i.d. We prove that for $d>7$ these algebras can't be free. When $d=7$ and $d=3$ we give an estimate for the dimension of the symmetric spaces for which these algebras might be free. We also compare our results with the known results for $d=3$.
Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_\mathbb{K})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper we determine its maximal discrete extension in $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$, which coincides with the normalizer of $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$. The description involves the $n$-torsion subgroup of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{K}$. This group is defined over a particular number field $\widehat{\mathbb{K}}_n$ and we can describe the ramified primes in it. In the case $n=2$ we give an explicit description, which invol…
Extending the method of the paper [FS3] we prove three structure theorems for vector valued modular forms, where two correspond to 4-dimensional cases (two hermitian modular groups, one belonging to the field of Eisenstein numbers, the other to the field of Gaussian numbers.) and one to a 6-dimensional case (a quaternionic modular group).
For $K$ an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant $-D_K$ and associated quadratic Galois character $χ_K$, Kojima, Gritsenko and Krieg studied a Hermitian Maass lift of elliptic modular cusp forms of level $D_K$ and nebentypus $χ_K$ via Hermitian Jacobi forms to Hermitian modular forms of level one for the unitary group $U(2,2)$ split over $K$. We generalize this (under certain conditions on $K$ and $p$) to the case of $p$-oldforms of level $pD_K$ and character $χ_K$. To do this, we define an appropriate Hermitian Maass space for general level and prove that it is isomorphic to the space o…
We introduce a certain differential (heat) operator on the space of Hermitian Jacobi forms of degree 1, show it's commutation with certain Hecke operators and use it to construct a lift of elliptic cusp forms to Hermitian Jacobi cusp forms. We construct Hermitian Jacobi forms as the image of the tensor product of two copies of Jacobi forms and also from differentiation of the variables. We determine the number of Fourier coefficients that determine a Hermitian Jacobi form and use it to embed a certain subspace of Hermitian Jacobi forms into a direct sum of modular forms for the full modular gr…
We give congruences between the Eisenstein series and a cusp form in the cases of Siegel modular forms and Hermitian modular forms. We should emphasize that there is a relation between the existence of a prime dividing the $k-1$-th generalized Bernoulli number and the existence of non-trivial Hermitian cusp forms of weight $k$. We will conclude by giving numerical examples for each case.
We study graded rings of meromorphic Hermitian modular forms of degree two whose poles are supported on an arrangement of Heegner divisors. For the group $\mathrm{SU}_{2,2}(\mathcal{O}_K)$ where $K$ is the imaginary-quadratic number field of discriminant $-d$, $d \in \{4, 7, 8, 11, 15, 19, 20, 24\}$ we obtain a polynomial algebra without relations. In particular the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces.
The existence and construction of vector-valued modular forms (vvmf) for any arbitrary Fuchsian group $\mathrm{G}$, for any representation $ρ:\mathrm{G} \longrightarrow \mathrm{GL}_{d}(\mathbb{C})$ of finite image can be established by lifting scalar-valued modular forms of the finite index subgroup $Ker(ρ)$ of $\mathrm{G}$. In this article vvmf are explicitly constructed for any admissible multiplier (representation) $ρ$, see Section 3 for the definition of admissible multiplier. In other words, the following question has been partially answered: For which representations $ρ$ of a given $\mat…
We consider the genus of $20$ classes of unimodular Hermitian lattices of rank $12$ over the Eisenstein integers. This set is the domain for a certain space of algebraic modular forms. We find a basis of Hecke eigenforms, and guess global Arthur parameters for the associated automorphic representations, which recover the computed Hecke eigenvalues. Congruences between Hecke eigenspaces, combined with the assumed parameters, recover known congruences for classical modular forms, and support new instances of conjectured Eisenstein congruences for $\mathbb{U}(2,2)$ automorphic forms.
For an imaginary quadratic field $K$ of discriminant $-D$, let $χ= χ_K$ be the associated quadratic character. We will show that the space of special hermitian Jacobi forms of level $N$ is isomorphic to the space of plus forms of level $DN$ and nebentypus $χ$ (the hermitian analogue of Kohnen's plus space) for any integer $N$ prime to $D$. This generalizes the results of Krieg from $N = 1$ to arbitrary level. Combining this isomorphism with the recent work of Berger and Klosin and a modification of Ikeda's construction we prove the existence of a lift from the space of elliptic modular forms t…
We present a dimension formula for spaces of vector-valued modular forms of integer weight in case the associated multiplier system has finite image, and discuss the weight distribution of the module generators of holomorphic and cusp forms, as well as the duality relation between cusp forms and holomorphic forms for the contragredient.
The aim of this paper is to describe efficient algorithms for computing Maass waveforms on subgroups of the modular group PSL(2,Z) with general multiplier systems and real weight. A selection of numerical results obtained with these algorithms is also presented. Certain operators acting on the spaces of interest are also discussed. The specific phenomena that were investigated include the Shimura correspondence for Maass waveforms and the behavior of the weight-k Laplace spectra for the modular surface as the weight approaches 0.
Each finite $p$-perfect group $G$ ($p$ a prime) has a universal central $p$-extension. For a perfect group these central extensions come from its {\sl Schur multiplier}. Serre gave a Stiefel-Whitney class approach to analyzing spin covers of alternating groups ($p=2$) aimed at geometric covering space problems. This included the regular version of the Inverse Galois Problem. Every finite simple group with order divisible by $p$ has an infinite string of perfect centerless group covers exhibiting nontrivial Schur multipliers for the prime $p$. Sequences of moduli spaces of curves attached to $G…
We construct Hecke operators acting on Maass waveforms of integer non-zero weight and transforming according to a non-trivial multiplier system on the modular group. Using these Hecke operators we obtain multiplicativity relations for the Fourier coefficients of such Maass waveforms. These relations generalize the usual weight zero relations. We also obtain an unexpected relation between coefficients with positive and negative indices with a constant of proportionality involving the Laplace eigenvalue. Numerical examples of multiplicativity relations are given at the end of the paper.

We prove that Hermitian cusp forms of weight $k$ for the Hermitian modular group of degree $2$ are determined by their Fourier coefficients indexed by matrices whose determinants are essentially square-free. Moreover, we give a quantitative version of the above result. This is a consequence of the corresponding results for integral weight elliptic cusp forms, which are also treated in this paper.
In this paper we investigate a result of Ueno on the modularity of generating series associated to the zeta functions of binary Hermitian forms previously studied by Elstrodt et al. We improve his result by showing that the generating series are Eisenstein series. As a consequence we obtain an explicit formula for the special values of zeta functions associated with binary Hermitian forms.
Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
We compare the spaces of Hermitian Jacobi forms (HJF) of weight $k$ and indices $1,2$ with classical Jacobi forms (JF) of weight $k$ and indices $1,2,4$. Using the embedding into JF, upper bounds for the order of vanishing of HJF at the origin is obtained. We compute the rank of HJF as a module over elliptic modular forms and prove the algebraic independence of the generators in case of index 1. Some related questions are discussed.
We look at genera of even unimodular lattices of rank $12$ over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and of rank $8$ over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3})$, using Kneser neighbours to diagonalise spaces of scalar-valued algebraic modular forms. We conjecture most of the global Arthur parameters, and prove several of them using theta series, in the manner of Ikeda and Yamana. We find instances of congruences for non-parallel weight Hilbert modular forms. Turning to the genus of Hermitian lattices of rank $12$ over the Eisenstein integers, even and unimodular over $\mathbb…
Siegel modular forms in the space of the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator are constructed by the Eisenstein series in some odd-degree cases. Additionally, a similar result in the case of Hermitian modular forms is given.
We derive explicit isomorphisms between certain congruence subgroups of the Siegel modular group, the Hermitian modular group over an arbitrary imaginary-quadratic number field and the modular group over the Hurwitz quaternions of degree 2 and the discriminant kernels of special orthogonal groups SO 0 (2, n), n = 3, 4, 6. The proof is based on an application of linear algebra adapted to the number theoretical needs.
We show that certain $p$-adic Eisenstein series for quaternionic modular groups of degree 2 become "real" modular forms of level $p$ in almost all cases. To prove this, we introduce a $U(p)$ type operator. We also show that there exists a $p$-adic Eisenstein series of the above type that has transcendental coefficients. Former examples of $p$-adic Eisenstein series for Siegel and Hermitian modular groups are both rational (i.e., algebraic).
We develop two structure theorems for vector valued Siegel modular forms for Igusa's subgroup Γ_2[2,4], the multiplier system induced by the theta constants and the representation Sym^2. In the proof, we identify some of these modular forms with rational tensors with easily handleable poles on P^3\C. It follows that the observed modules of modular forms are generated by the Rankin-Cohen brackets of the four theta series of the second kind.
We define the space of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms on a connected reductive group $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that the homogeneous space $G(\mathbb{R})^1/ K_\infty^\circ$ is a Hermitian symmetric space. By Pitale, Saha and Schmidt's study, there are the classification of indecomposable $(\mathfrak{g},K_\infty)$-modules which occur in the space of nearly holomorphic elliptic modular forms and Siegel modular forms of degree $2$. This paper studies global representations of the adele group $G(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ which occur in the space of nearly holomorphic Hilbert modular forms. In …
We explain the basic ideas, describe with proofs the main results, and demonstrate the effectiveness, of an evolving theory of vector-valued modular forms (vvmf). To keep the exposition concrete, we restrict here to the special case of the modular group. Among other things,we construct vvmf for arbitrary multipliers, solve the Mittag-Leffler problem here, establish Serre duality and find a dimension formula for holomorphic vvmf, all in far greater generality than has been done elsewhere. More important, the new ideas involved are sufficiently simple and robust that this entire theory extends d…
We consider the Hermitian Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$ of degree $2$ and weight $k$ associated with an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and determine the influence of $\mathbb{K}$ on the arithmetic and the growth of its Fourier coefficients. We find that they satisfy the identity $E^{{(\mathbb{K})}^2}_4 = E^{{(\mathbb{K})}}_8$, which is well-known for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$, if and only if $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{-3})$. As an application, we show that the Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$, $k=4,6,8,10,12$ are algebraically independent whenever $\…
Throughout the 1980's, Kudla and the second named author studied integral transforms from rapidly decreasing closed differential forms on arithmetic quotients of the symmetric spaces of orthogonal and unitary groups to spaces of classical Siegel and Hermitian modular forms. These transforms came from the theory of dual reductive pairs and the theta correspondence. They computed the Fourier expansion of these transforms in terms of periods over certain totally geodesic cycles . This also gave rise to the realization of intersection numbers of these `special' cycles with cycles with compact supp…
An algebraic classification is given for spaces of holomorphic vector-valued modular forms of arbitrary real weight and multiplier system, associated to irreducible, T-unitarizable representations of the full modular group, of dimension less than six. For representations of dimension less than four, it is shown that the associated space of vector-valued modular forms is a cyclic module over a certain skew polynomial ring of differential operators. For dimensions four and five, a complete list of possible Hilbert-Poincare series is given, using the fact that the space of vector-valued modular f…
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
In this paper we study algebras of modular forms on unitary groups of signature $(n,1)$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an algebra of unitary modular forms to be free in terms of the modular Jacobian. As a corollary we obtain a criterion that guarantees in many cases that, if $L$ is an even lattice with complex multiplication and the ring of modular forms for its orthogonal group is a polynomial algebra, then the ring of modular forms for its unitary group is also a polynomial algebra. We prove that a number of rings of unitary modular forms are freely generated by applying t…
For $m,n>0$ and $mn<0$ we estimate the sums \begin{equation*} \sum_{c \leq x} \frac{S(m,n,c,χ)}{c}, \end{equation*} where the $S(m,n,c,χ)$ are Kloosterman sums attached to a multiplier $χ$ of weight $1/2$ on the full modular group. Our estimates are uniform in $m, n$ and $x$ in analogy with the bounds for the case $mn<0$ due to Ahlgren-Andersen, and those of Sarnak-Tsimerman for the trivial multiplier when $m,n>0$. In the case $mn<0$, our estimates are stronger in the $mn$-aspect than those of Ahlgren-Andersen. We also obtain a refinement whose quality depends on the factorization of $24m-23$ …
