In this paper we study quadratic points on the non-split Cartan modular curves $X_{ns}(p)$, for $p = 7, 11,$ and $13$. Recently, Siksek proved that all quadratic points on $X_{ns}(7)$ arise as pullbacks of rational points on $X_{ns}^+(7)$. Using similar techniques for $p=11$, and employing a version of Chabauty for symmetric powers of curves for $p=13$, we show that the same holds for $X_{ns}(11)$ and $X_{ns}(13)$. As a consequence, we prove that certain classes of elliptic curves over quadratic fields are modular.
The genus $4$ modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ attached to a non-split Cartan group of level $11$ admits a model defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We compute generators for its function field in terms of Siegel modular functions. We also show that its Jacobian is isomorphic over $\mathbb{Q}$ to the new part of the Jacobian of the classical modular curve $X_0(121)$.
We present a strategy to obtain explicit equations for the modular double covers associated respectively to both a split and a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\text{GL}_2(\mathbb F_{p})$ with $p$ prime. Then we apply it successfully to the level $13$ case.
In this paper we describe a method for computing a basis for the space of weight $2$ cusp forms invariant under a non-split Cartan subgroup of prime level $p$. As an application we compute, for certain small values of $p$, explicit equations over $\bf Q$ for the canonical embeddings of the associated modular curves.
We derive equations for the modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ associated to a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\,\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{F}_{11})$. This allows us to compute the automorphism group of the curve and show that it is isomorphic to Klein's four group.
Let $ \mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p) $ be the Cuspidal Divisor Class Group of the modular curves $X^+_{ns}(p) $ associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of level $ p$. I study the $ p-$primary part of $ \mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p) $ and estimate the order of growth of $ |\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p)| $.
We study the automorphisms of the non-split Cartan modular curves $X_{ns}(p)$ of prime level $p$. We prove that if $p\geq 37$ all the automorphisms preserve the cusps. Furthermore, if $p\equiv 1\text{ mod }12$ and $p\neq 13$, the automorphism group is generated by the modular involution given by the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\text{GL}_2(\mathbb F_p)$. We also prove that for every $p\geq 37$ such that $X_{ns}(p)$ has a CM rational point, the existence of an exceptional rational automorphism would give rise to an exceptional rational point on the modular curve $X_{ns}^+(p)$ a…
I find an explicit description of modular units in terms of Siegel functions for the modular curves $X^+_{ns}(p^k)$ associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of level $p^k$ where $p\not=2,3$ is a prime. The Cuspidal Divisor Class Group $\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p^k)$ on $X^+_{ns}(p^k)$ is explicitly described as a module over the group ring $R = \mathbb{Z}[(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^*/\{\pm 1\}]$. In this paper I give a formula involving generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_{2,χ}$ for $|\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p^k)|$.
Modular curves like X_0(N) and X_1(N) appear very frequently in arithmetic geometry. While their complex points are obtained as a quotient of the upper half plane by some subgroups of SL_2(Z), they allow for a more arithmetic description as a solution to a moduli problem. This description turns out to be very useful in many applications. We wish to give such a moduli description for two modular curves: those associated to non-split Cartan subgroups and their normaliser in GL_2(F_p). These modular curves appear for instance in Serre's problem of classifying all possible Galois structures of p-t…
We study the automorphisms of modular curves associated to Cartan subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)$ and certain subgroups of their normalizers. We prove that if $n$ is large enough, all the automorphisms are induced by the ramified covering of the complex upper half-plane. We get new results for non-split curves of prime level $p\ge 13$: the curve $X_{\text{ns}}^+(p)$ has no non-trivial automorphisms, whereas the curve $X_{\text{ns}}(p)$ has exactly one non-trivial automorphism. Moreover, as an immediate consequence of our results we compute the automorphism group of $X_0^*(n)…
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $p^2$ and odd analytic rank. We prove that the positions of its special points arising from non-split Cartan curves and imaginary quadratic fields where $p$ is inert are encoded in the Fourier coefficients of a Jacobi form of weight $6$ and lattice index of rank $9$, obtaining a result analogous to that of Gross, Kohnen and Zagier.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E/K$ is $-1$. Let $O$ be an order in $K$ and assume that there exists an odd prime $p$, such that $p^2 \mid\mid N$, and $p$ is inert in $O$. Although there are no Heegner points on $X_0(N)$ attached to $O$, in this article we construct such points on Cartan non-split curves. In order to do that we give a method to compute Fourier expansions for forms in Cartan non-split curves, and prove that the constructed points form a Heegner system as in the classical case.
We extend the explicit quadratic Chabauty methods developed in previous work by the first two authors to the case of non-hyperelliptic curves. This results in an algorithm to compute the rational points on a curve of genus $g \ge 2$ over the rationals whose Jacobian has Mordell-Weil rank $g$ and Picard number greater than one, and which satisfies some additional conditions. This algorithm is then applied to the modular curve $X_{s}(13)$, completing the classification of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ with split Cartan level structure due to Bilu-Parent and Bilu-Parent-Rebolledo.
We complete the description of semistable models for modular curves associated with maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_2 ({\mathbb F}_p )$ (for $p$ any prime, $p>5$). That is, in the new cases of non-split Cartan modular curves and exceptional subgroups, we identify the irreducible components and singularities of the reduction mod $p$, and the complete local rings at the singularities. We review the case of split Cartan modular curves. This description suffices for computing the group of connected components of the fibre at $p$ of the Néron model of the Jacobian.

It is known that if $p>37$ is a prime number and $E/\mathbb{Q}$ is an elliptic curve without complex multiplication, then the image of the mod $p$ Galois representation $$ \barρ_{E,p}:\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow \operatorname{GL}(E[p]) $$ of $E$ is either the whole of $\operatorname{GL}(E[p])$, or is \emph{contained} in the normaliser of a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(E[p])$. In this paper, we show that when $p>1.4\times 10^7$, the image of $\barρ_{E,p}$ is either $\operatorname{GL}(E[p])$, or the \emph{full} normaliser of a non-split Cart…
In this paper, we recall an alternative proof of Merel's conjecture which asserts that a certain explicit correspondence gives the isogeny relation between the Jacobians associated to the normalizer of split and non-split Cartan subgroups. This alternative proof does not require extensive representation theory and can be formulated in terms of certain finite geometries modulo $\ell$. Secondly, we generalize these arguments to exhibit an explicit correspondence which gives the isogeny relation between the Jacobians associated to split and non-split Cartan subgroups. An interesting feature is th…
In this note we give an explicit parametrization of the modular curve associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of level 9. We determine all integral points of this modular curve. As an application, we give an alternative solution to the class number one problem.
We prove that there exists an integer p_0 such that X_split(p)(Q) is made of cusps and CM-points for any prime p>p_0. Equivalently, for any non-CM elliptic curve E over Q and any prime p>p_0 the image of the Galois representation induced by the Galois action on the p-division points of E is not contained in the normalizer of a split Cartan subgroup. This gives a partial answer to an old question of Serre.
Using lower bounds for linear forms in elliptic logarithms we determine the integral points of the modular curve associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan group of level 11. As an application we obtain a new solution of the class number one problem for complex quadratic fields.
We study the splitting of primes in number fields generated by points on modular curves. Momose was the first to notice that quadratic points on $X_1(n)$ generate quadratic fields over which certain primes split in a particular way and his results were later expanded upon by Krumm. We prove results about the splitting behaviour of primes in quadratic fields generated by points on the modular curves $X_0(n)$ which are hyperelliptic (except for $n=37$) and in cubic fields generated by points on $X_1(2, 14)$.
We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to explicitly determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell--Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or nontrivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin--Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N…
We shall introduce and study certain truncated sums of Hecke eigenvalues of $GL_2$-automorphic forms along quadratic polynomials. A power saving estimate is established and new applications to moments of critical $L$-values associated to quadratic fields are derived. An application to the asymptotic behavior of the height of Heegner points and singular moduli is discussed in details.
The topic of this paper concerns a certain relation between the jacobians of various quotients of the modular curve $X(p)$, which relates the jacobian of the quotient of $X(p)$ by the normaliser of a non-split Cartan subgroup of $GL_2(F_p)$ to the jacobians of more standard modular curves. In this paper, we confirm a conjecture of Merel found in a paper of Darmon-Merel, "Winding quotients and some variants of Fermat's Last Theorem", Crelle, v. 490, p. 81-100, 1997, which describes this relation in terms of explicit correspondences. The method used is to reduce the conjecture to showing a certa…
We show that geodesics in the upper half-plane attached to a maximal split torus or a real quadratic torus in $GL_{2, \mathbf{Q}}$ are the only irreducible algebraic curves whose image via the $j$-invariant is contained in an algebraic curve.
We describe an algorithm for computing integral points on the modular curve of prime level p associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of GL_2(F_p). Using our method, we show that for 7<p<101 the only integral points on this curve are the CM-points.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N=p^2M$ where $p$ is an odd prime not dividing $M$. Let $\mathcal{O}_f$ be the order of conductor $f$ (relatively prime to $N$) in an imaginary quadratic field $K$ in which $p$ is inert and such that the sign of the functional equation of $E/K$ is $-1$. Associated to these data there is a Shimura curve of non-split Cartan level at $p$ and a CM point of conductor $f$ on it. We can also consider a CM point of conductor $pf$ on another Shimura curve, using a split Cartan level at $p$. These curves admit parametrizations to $E$ and taking the i…

Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. We study signed Selmer groups for non-ordinary modular forms over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, showing that their $μ$-invariants vanish. This generalizes and gives a new proof of a recent result of Matar on the vanishing of the $μ$-invariants of plus and minus signed Selmer groups for elliptic curves.
We give a new proof of a result due to Breuil and Emerton which relates the splitting behavior at p of the p-adic Galois representation attached to a p-ordinary modular form to the existence of an overconvergent p-adic companion form for f.
Let F be a totally real field of degree d and let p be an odd prime which is totally split in F. We define and study one-dimensional partial eigenvarieties interpolating Hilbert modular forms over F with weight varying only at a single place v above p. For these eigenvarieties, we show that methods developed by Liu, Wan and Xiao apply and deduce that, over a boundary annulus in weight space of sufficiently small radius, the partial eigenvarieties decompose as a disjoint union of components which are finite over weight space. We apply this result to prove the parity version of the Bloch--Kato c…
We study $N$-congruences between quadratic twists of elliptic curves. If $N$ has exactly two distinct prime factors we show that these are parametrised by double covers of certain modular curves. In many, but not all cases, the modular curves in question correspond to the normaliser of a Cartan subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})$. By computing explicit models for these double covers we find all pairs $(N, r)$ such that there exist infinitely many $j$-invariants of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ which are $N$-congruent with power $r$ to a quadratic twist of $E$. We also find an …
In this paper, we study modular forms on two simply connected groups of type $D_4$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. One group, $G_s$ is a globally split group of type $D_4$, viewed as the group of isotopies of the split rational octonions. The other, $G_c$, is the isotopy group of the rational (non-split) octonions. We study automorphic forms on $G_s$, in analogy to the work of Gross, Gan, and Savin on $G_2$; namely we study automorphic forms whose component at infinity corresponds to a quaternionic discrete series representation. We study automorphic forms on $G_c$ using Gross's formalism of ``algebraic m…
Let $f$ be a newform of even weight $2κ$ for $D^\times$, where $D$ is a possibly split indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $K$ be a quadratic imaginary field splitting $D$ and $p$ an odd prime split in $K$. We extend our theory of $p$-adic measures attached to the power series expansions of $f$ around the Galois orbit of the CM point corresponding to an embedding $K\hookrightarrow D$ to forms with any nebentypus and to $p$ dividing the level of $f$. For the latter we restrict our considerations to CM points corresponding to test objects endowed with an arithmetic $p$-level str…
We prove modularity of certain residually reducible ordinary 2-dimensional $p$-adic Galois representations with determinant a finite order odd character $χ$. For certain non-quadratic $χ$ we prove an $R=T$ result for $T$ the weight 1 specialisation of the Hida Hecke algebra acting on non-classical weight 1 forms, under the assumption that no two Hida families congruent to an Eisenstein series cross in weight 1. For quadratic $χ$ we prove that the quotient of $R$ corresponding to deformations split at $p$ is isomorphic to the Hecke algebra acting on classical CM weight 1 modular forms.
