We consider a functional semilinear Rayleigh-Stokes equation involving fractional derivative. Our aim is to analyze some circumstances, in those the global solvability and some results on asymptotic behavior of solutions take place. By establishing a new Halanay type inequality, we show the dissipativity and asymptotic stability of solutions to our problem. In addition, we prove the existence of a compact set of decay solutions by using local estimates and fixed point arguments.
We are concerned with the initial value problem governed by generalized Rayleigh-Stokes equations, where the nonlinearity depends on history states and takes values in Hilbert scales of negative order. The solvability and Hölder regularity of solutions are proved by using fixed point arguments and embeddings of fractional Sobolev spaces. An application to a related inverse source problem is given.
The two-phase free boundary problem with surface tension and downforce gravity for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to equilibrium. The boundary symbol of this problem admits zeros in the unstable halfplane in case the heavy fluid is on top of the light one, which leads to the well-known Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Instability is proved rigorously in an $L_p$-setting by means of an abstract instability result due to Henry.
The Fourier method is used to find conditions on the right-hand side and on the initial data in the Rayleigh-Stokes problem, which ensure the existence and uniqueness of the solution. Then, in the Rayleigh-Stokes problem, instead of the initial condition, consider the non-local condition: $u(x,T)=βu(x,0)+φ(x)$, where $β$ is either zero or one. It is well known that if $β=0$, then the corresponding problem, called the backward problem, is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard, i.e. a small change in $u(x,T)$ leads to large changes in the initial data. Nevertheless, we will show that if we consider…

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the study of forward and inverse problems for the Rayleigh-Stokes equation in connection with the importance of this equation for applications. This equation plays an important role, in particular, in the study of the behavior of certain non-Newtonian fluids. The equation includes a fractional derivative of order $α$, which is used to describe the viscoelastic behavior of the flow. In this paper, we study the behavior of the solution of such equations depending on the parameter $α$. In particular, it is proved that for sufficiently large $t$ the…
The Navier-Stokes equation driven by heat conduction is studied. As a prototype we consider Rayleigh-Bénard convection, in the Boussinesq approximation. Under a large aspect ratio assumption, which is the case in Rayleigh-Bénard experiments with Prandtl number close to one, we prove the existence of a global strong solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a heat equation, and the existence of a maximal B-attractor. A rigorous two-scale limit is obtained by homogenization theory. The mean velocity field is obtained by averaging the two-scale limit over the unit torus in the local …
In the paper we study the problem of the isotropic realizability in R^2 of a regular strain field e(U)=1/2(DU+DU^T) for the incompressible Stokes equation, namely the existence of a positive viscosity mu\textgreater{}0 solving the Stokes equation in R^2 with the prescribed field e(U). We show that if e(U) does not vanish at some point, then the isotropic realizability holds in the neighborhood of that point. The global realizability in R^2 or in the torus is much more delicate, since it involves the global existence of a regular solution to a semilinear wave equation the coefficients of which …
A nonlocal boundary value problem for the fractional version of the well known in fluid dynamics Rayleigh-Stokes equation is studied. Namely, the condition $u(x,T)=βu(x,0)+φ(x)$, where $β$ is an arbitrary real number, is proposed instead of the initial condition. If $β=0$, then we get the inverse problem in time, called the backward problem. It is well known that the backward problem is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. If $β=1$, then the corresponding non-local problem becomes well-posed in the sense of Hadamard, and moreover, in this case a coercive estimate for the solution can be establi…
This article is concerned with the dynamic behaviour of two immiscible and incompressible fluids in a cylindrical domain, which are separated by a sharp interface. In case that the heavy fluid is situated on top of the light fluid, one expects that the fluid on top sags down into the lower phase. This effect is known as the Rayleigh-Taylor-Instability. We present a rather complete analysis of the corresponding free boundary problem which involves a contact angle. Our main result implies the existence of a critical surface tension with the following property. In case that the surface tension of…
Due to the seminal works of Hochbruck and Ostermann exponential splittings are well established numerical methods utilizing operator semigroup theory for the treatment of semilinear evolution equations whose principal linear part involves a sectorial operator with angle greater than $π/2$ (meaning essentially the holomorphy of the underlying semigroup). The present paper contributes to this subject by relaxing on the sectoriality condition, but in turn requiring that the semigroup operators act consistently on an interpolation couple (or on a scale of Banach spaces). Our conditions (on the sem…
We present a rigorous convergence result for the smooth solutions to a singular semilinear hyperbolic approximation, a vector BGK model, to the solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces. Our proof is based on the use of a constant right symmetrizer, weighted with respect to the parameter of the singular pertubation system. This symmetrizer provides a conservative-dissipative form for the system and this allow us to perform uniform energy estimates and to get the convergence by compactness.
We discuss the existence and non-existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity of the form: $-Δu=λu^p - u^q$ in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $ 0< q < p \leq 1$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. The approach is based on the Nehari manifold method supplemented by a one-sided constraint given through the functional of the suitable Pohozaev identity. The limit value of the parameter $λ$, where the approach is applicable, corresponds to the existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the …
We consider the Stokes-Boussinesq (and the stationary Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq) equations in a slanted, i.e. not aligned with the gravity's direction, 3d channel and with an arbitrary Rayleigh number. For the front-like initial data and under the no-slip boundary condition for the flow and no-flux boundary condition for the reactant temperature, we derive uniform estimates on the burning rate and the flow velocity, which can be interpreted as stability results for the laminar front.
We study the dynamics of the interface given by two incompressible viscous fluids in the Stokes regime filling a 2D horizontally periodic strip. The fluids are subject to the gravity force and the density difference induces the dynamics of the interface. We derive the contour dynamics formulation for this problem through a $x_1$-periodic version of the Stokeslet. Using this new system, we show local-in-time well-posedness when the initial interface is described by a curve with no self-intersections and $C^{1+γ}$ Hölder regularity, $0<γ<1$. This well-posedness result holds regardless of the Ray…
In our previous paper [12] (Rev. Math. Phys. 16, 383-420 (2004)), a general framework was outlined to treat the approximate solutions of semilinear evolution equations; more precisely, a scheme was presented to infer from an approximate solution the existence (local or global in time) of an exact solution, and to estimate their distance. In the first half of the present work the abstract framework of \cite{uno} is extended, so as to be applicable to evolutionary PDEs whose nonlinearities contain derivatives in the space variables. In the second half of the paper this extended framework is appl…
We derive upper bounds for the number of asymptotic degrees (determining modes and nodes) of freedom for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes system and Navier-Stokes system with damping. In the first case we obtain the previously known estimates in an explicit form, which are larger than the fractal dimension of the global attractor. However, for the Navier--Stokes system with damping our estimates for the number of the determining modes and nodes are comparable to the sharp estimates for the fractal dimension of the global attractor. Our investigation of the damped-driven 2D Navier--Stokes sys…
The aim of this paper is to show time-decay estimates of solutions to linearized two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity. The original two-phase Navier-Stokes equations describe the two-phase incompressible viscous flow with a sharp interface that is close to the hyperplane $x_N=0$ in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space, $N \geq 2$. It is well-known that the Rayleigh-Taylor instability occurs when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower one, while this paper assumes that the lower fluid is heavier than the upper one and proves time-decay estimates of $L_p-L_q$ type…
We consider the motion of two superposed immiscible, viscous, incompressible, capillary fluids that are separated by a sharp interface which needs to be determined as part of the problem. Allowing for gravity to act on the fluids, we prove local well-posedness of the problem. In particular, we obtain well-posedness for the case where the heavy fluid lies on top of the light one, that is, for the case where the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is present. Additionally we show that solutions become real analytic instantaneously.
We study the diffusion-reaction-advection model for mobile chemical species together with the dissolution and precipitation of immobile species in a porous medium at the micro-scale. This leads to a system of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations in the pore space coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation at the grain boundary of the solid matrices. The fluid flow within the pore space is given by unsteady Stokes equation. The novelty of this work is to do the iterative limit analysis of the system by tackling the nonlinear terms, monotone multi-valued dissolution r…
We study the equations obtained from linearizing the compressible Navier-Stokes equations around a steady-state profile with a heavier fluid lying above a lighter fluid along a planar interface, i.e. a Rayleigh-Taylor instability. We consider the equations with or without surface tension, with the viscosity allowed to depend on the density, and in both periodic and non-periodic settings. In the presence of viscosity there is no natural variational framework for constructing growing mode solutions to the linearized problem. We develop a general method of studying a family of modified variationa…
In a $d-$dimensional strip with $d\geq 2$, we study the non-stationary Stokes equation with no-slip boundary condition in the lower and upper plates and periodic boundary condition in the horizontal directions. In this paper we establish a new maximal regularity estimate in the real interpolation norm \begin{equation*} ||f||_{(0,1)}=\inf_{f=f_0+f_1}\left\{\left\langle\sup_{0<z<1} |f_0|\right\rangle+ \left\langle\int_0^{1} |f_1| \frac{dz}{(1-z)z}\right\rangle\right\}\,, \end{equation*} where the brackets $\langle\cdot\rangle$ denotes the horizontal-space and time average. The norms involved in …
In $1904$, Prandtl introduced his famous boundary layer in order to describe the behavior of solutions of incompressible Navier Stokes equations near a boundary as the viscosity goes to $0$. His Ansatz was that the solution of Navier Stokes equations can be described as a solution of Euler equations, plus a boundary layer corrector, plus a vanishing error term in $L^\infty$ in the inviscid limit. In this paper we prove that, for a class of smooth solutions of Navier Stokes equations, namely for shear layer profiles which are unstable for Rayleigh equations, this Ansatz is false if we consider …
In this paper, we are interested in the nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor instability for the gravity-driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions around a smooth increasing density profile $ρ_0(x_2)$ in a slab domain $2πL\mathbb{T} \times (-1,1)$ ($L>0$, $\mathbb{T}$ is the usual 1D torus). The linear instability study of the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor model amounts to the study of the following ODE on the finite interval $(-1,1)$, \begin{equation}\label{EqMain} λ^2 ( ρ_0 k^2 ϕ- (ρ_0 ϕ')')+ λμ(ϕ^{(4)} - 2k^2 ϕ'' + k^4 ϕ) = gk^2 ρ_0'ϕ, \end{equation} with the boundar…
Bresch-Desjardins-Gisclon-Sart have derived that the capillarity can slow {down} the growth rate of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in the capillary fluids based on the linearized two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations in 2008. Motivated by their linear theory, we further investigate the nonlinear RT problem for the 2D incompressible case in a horizontally periodic slab domain with Navier boundary condition, and rigorously verify that the RT instability can be inhibited by capillarity under our 2D setting. More precisely, if the RT density profile $\barρ$ satisfies an additiona…
We study the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two incompressible, immiscible, viscous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, with zero resistivity, surface tension (or without surface tenstion) and special initial magnetic field, evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. First, we reformulate in Lagrangian coordinates MHD equations in a infinite slab as one for the Navier-Stokes equations with a force term induced by the fluid flow map. Then we analyze the linearized problem around the steady state which describes a denser immiscible fluid lying above a light one wi…
We reformulate in Lagrangian coordinates the two-phase free boundary problem for the equations of Magnetohydrodynamics in a infinite slab, which is incompressible, viscous and of zero resistivity, as one for the Navier-Stokes equations with a force term induced by the fluid flow map. We study the stabilized effect of the magnetic field for the linearized equations around the steady-state solution by assuming that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid, $i. e.$, the linear Rayleigh-Taylor instability. We identity the critical magnetic number $|B|_c$ by a variational problem. For the ca…
We present a theory of hypoellipticity and unique ergodicity for semilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs with "polynomial" nonlinearities and additive noise, considered as abstract evolution equations in some Hilbert space. It is shown that if Hormander's bracket condition holds at every point of this Hilbert space, then a lower bound on the Malliavin covariance operator $M_t$ can be obtained. Informally, this bound can be read as "Fix any finite-dimensional projection $Π$ on a subspace of sufficiently regular functions. Then the eigenfunctions of $M_t$ with small eigenvalues have only a very sma…
This work aims to prove the small time large deviation principle (LDP) for a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with locally monotone coefficients in generalized variational framework. The main result could be applied to demonstrate the small time LDP for various quasilinear and semilinear SPDEs such as stochastic porous media equations, stochastic $p$-Laplace equations, stochastic Burgers type equation, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation, stochastic power law fluid equation and stochastic Ladyzhenskaya model. In particular, our small time LDP result seems to be new i…
We investigate the nonlinear instability of a smooth steady density profile solution of the threedimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a uniform gravitational field, including a Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solution with heavier density with increasing height (referred to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability). We first analyze the equations obtained from linearization around the steady density profile solution. Then we construct solutions of the linearized problem that grow in time in the Sobolev space Hk, thus leading to a global instability result fo…
We present some new discoveries on the mathematical foundation of linear hydrodynamic stability theory. The new discoveries are: 1. Linearized Euler equations fail to provide a linear approximation on inviscid hydrodynamic stability. 2. Eigenvalue instability predicted by high Reynolds number linearized Navier-Stokes equations cannot capture the dominant instability of super fast growth. 3. As equations for directional differentials, Rayleigh equation and Orr-Sommerfeld equation cannot capture the nature of the full differentials.
