Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q=p^t$ elements. In this paper, we study the number of solutions of equations of the form $a_1 x_1^{d_1}+\dots+a_s x_s^{d_s}=b$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. A classic well-konwn result from Weil yields a bound for such number of solutions. In our main result we give an explicit formula for the number of solutions for diagonal equations satisfying certain natural restrictions on the exponents. In the case $d_1=\dots=d_s$, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the number of solutions of a diagonal equation being maximal and minimal with respect to Weil's bound. In particular, we completely characterize maximal and minimal Fermat type curves.
We compute the Artin $L$-function of a diagonal hypersurface D_λ over a finite field associated to a character of a finite group acting on D_λ , and under some condition, express it in terms of hypergeometric functions and Jacobi sums over the finite field. As an application, we consider the Dwork hypersurfaces and obtain relations among certain hypergeometric functions over different finite fields.
We show that Artin's conjecture concerning p-adic solubility of Diophantine equations fails for infinitely many systems of r homogeneous diagonal equations whenever r>1.
In this paper we study the set of rational solutions of equations defined by power sums symmetric polynomials with coefficients in a finite field. We do this by means of applying a methodology which relies on the study of the geometry of the set of common zeros of symmetric polynomials over the algebraic closure of a finite field. We provide improved estimates and existence results of rational solutions to the following equations: deformed diagonal equations, generalized Markoff Hurwitz type equations and Carlitz's equations. We extend these techniques to a more general variants of diagonal eq…
Using properties of Gauss and Jacobi sums, we derive explicit formulas for the number of solutions to a diagonal equation of the form $x_1^{2^m}+\dots+x_n^{2^m}=0$ over a finite field of characteristic $p\equiv\pm 3\pmod{8}$. All of the evaluations are effected in terms of parameters occurring in quadratic partitions of some powers of $p$.
We consider certain systems of three linked simultaneous diagonal equations in ten variables with total degree exceeding five. By means of a complification argument, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of integral solutions of this system of bounded height that resolves the associated paucity problem.
The author showed that any homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order can be converted to a diagonal form using an integer non-orthogonal transformation maintaining asymptotic behavior of the number of its integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the transformation to the diagonal form of a wider class of algebraic second-order Diophantine equations, and also we consider the conditions for converting higher order algebraic Diophantine equations to this form. The author found an asymptotic estimate for the number of integer solutions of the diagonal Thue equation of odd…
A method is described to sum multi-dimensional arithmetic functions subject to hyperbolic summation conditions, provided that asymptotic formulae in rectangular boxes are available. In combination with the circle method, the new method is a versatile tool to count rational points on algebraic varieties defined by multi-homogeneous diagonal equations.
This paper investigates the upper bound of the number of integer (natural) solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with integer coefficients without a free member via the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood. Author found the upper bound of the number of natural solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with explicit variable. He developed a method in the paper, which allows you to perform the low estimate of the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. Author obtained a lower estim…
The Thue-Siegel method is applied to derive an upper bound for the number of solutions to Thue's equation $F(x,y) = 1$ where $F$ is a quartic diagonalizable form with negative discriminant. Computation is used in this argument to handle forms whose discriminant is small in absolute value. We then apply our results to bound the number of integral points on a certain family of elliptic curves.
Employing Brüdern's and Wooley's new complification method, we establish an asymptotic Hasse principle for the number of solutions to a system of r_3 cubic and r_2 quadratic diagonal forms, when the number of cubic equations is at least double the number of quadratic forms. The number of variables required is lower than in earlier work. In particular, we achieve essentially square root cancellation for systems of one quadratic and arbitrarily many cubic equations.
We obtain asymptotic upper bounds for the number of natural solutions of the following diagonal Diophantine equations in a hypercube with side - $N$ in the paper: $x_1 = x_2^k+...+x_s^k$, $x_1^k = x_2^k+...+x_s^k$, $x_1 = \sum_{j=2}^s {x_j}^{k_j}$, where $k,s,k_j$ are the natural numbers.
We prove a Hasse principle for solving equations of the form ax+by+cz=0 where x, y, z belong to a given finite index subgroup of the multiplicative group of rational numbers. From this we deduce a Hasse principle for diagonal curves over fields of algebraic numbers with finitely generated Galois group.
The paper presents a new generalized integer orthogonal transformation which consists of a well known orthogonal transform followed by stretching the basis vectors maintaining the asymptotic behavior of the number of integer solutions for algebraic Diophantine equation. The author shows the properties of this transformation and he receives the algorithm for finding the matrix elements of a generalized integer orthogonal transformation for algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order to diagonal form. The article includes examples illustrating the reduction of algebraic equations of the s…
Author developed a method in the paper, which, unlike the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood (CM), allows you to perform a lower estimate for the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. It was found the lower estimate of the number of natural solutions to various types of homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equations with integer coefficients diagonal form with any number of variables using this method. Author obtained upper bound of the number of the natural solutions (using CM) of one type of homogeneous Diophantine equation for val…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. In this paper, we study the number of solutions of equations of the form $a_1 x_1^{d_1}+\dots+a_s x_s^{d_s}=b$ with $x_i\in\mathbb{F}_{p^{t_i}}$, where $b\in\mathbb{F}_q$ and $t_i|n$ for all $i=1,\dots,s$. In our main results, we employ results on quadratic forms to give an explicit formula for the number of solutions of diagonal equations with restricted solution sets satisfying certain natural restrictions on the exponents. As a consequence, we present conditions for the existence of solutions. We also discuss further questions conc…
Let $r,h\in\mathbb{N}$ with $r\geq 7$ and let $F(x,y)\in \mathbb{Z}[x ,y]$ be a binary form such that \[ F(x , y) =(αx + βy)^r -(γx + δy)^r, \] where $α$, $β$, $γ$ and $δ$ are algebraic constants with $αδ-βγ\neq 0$. We establish upper bounds for the number of primitive solutions to the Thue inequality $0<|F(x, y)| \leq h$, improving an earlier result of Siegel and of Akhtari, Saradha & Sharma.
We examine the solubility of a diagonal, translation invariant, quadratic equation system in arbitrary (dense) subsets A \subset Z and show quantitative bounds on the size of A if there are no non-trivial solutions. We use the circle method and Roth's density increment argument. Due to a restriction theory approach we can deal with equations in s \geq 7 variables.
A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. The existence of such cuboids is neither proved, nor disproved. A rational perfect cuboid is a natural companion of a perfect cuboid absolutely equivalent to the latter one. Its edges and face diagonals are rational numbers, while its space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently, based on a symmetry reduction, it was shown that edges of a rational perfect cuboid are roots of a certain cubic equation with rational coefficients depending on two rational parameters. F…
In this paper, we obtain an explicit combinatorial formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,\ldots,x_r)\in \mathbb{F}_{p^{ab}}$ to the diagonal equation $x_{1}^k+\cdots+x_{r}^k=α$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^{ab}}$, with $k=\frac{p^{ab}-1}{b(p^a-1)}$ and $b>1$ by using the number of $r$-walks in NEPS of complete graphs.
In this paper we obtain explicit estimates and existence results on the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational solutions of certain systems defined by families of diagonal equations over finite fields. Our approach relies on the study of the geometric properties of the varieties defined by the systems involved. We apply these results to a generalization of Waring's problem and the distribution of solutions of congruences modulo a prime number.
The system of equations \[ u_1p_1^2 + \ldots + u_sp_s^2 = 0 \] \[ v_1p_1^3 + \ldots + v_sp_s^3 = 0 \] has prime solutions $(p_1, \ldots, p_s)$ for $s \geq 12$, assuming that the system has solutions modulo each prime $p$. This is proved via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, building on Wooley's work on the corresponding system over the integers and recent results on Vinogradov's mean value theorem. Additionally, a set of sufficient conditions for local solvability is given: If both equations are solvable modulo 2, the quadratic equation is solvable modulo 3, and for each prime $p$ at least 7…
We show how to adapt the Hardy--Littlewood circle method to count monochromatic solutions to diagonal Diophantine equations. This delivers a lower bound which is optimal up to absolute constants. The method is illustrated on equations obtained by setting a diagonal quadratic form equal to a linear form. As a consequence, we determine an algebraic criterion for when such equations are partition regular. Our methods involve discrete harmonic analysis and require a number of `mixed' restriction estimates, which may be of independent interest.
We consider systems of $n$ diagonal equations in $k$th powers. Our main result shows that if the coefficient matrix of such a system is sufficiently non-singular, then the system is partition regular if and only if it satisfies Rado's columns condition. Furthermore, if the system also admits constant solutions, then we prove that the system has non-trivial solutions over every set of integers of positive upper density.
We prove a number field analogue of W. M. Schmidt's conjecture on the intersection of weighted badly approximable vectors and use this to prove an instance of a conjecture of An, Guan and Kleinbock. Namely, let $G := SL_2(\mathbb{R}) \times \dots \times SL_2(\mathbb{R}) $ and $Γ$ be a lattice in $G$. We show that the set of points on $G/Γ$ whose forward orbits under a one parameter Ad-semisimple subsemigroup of $G$ are bounded, form a hyperplane absolute winning set.
Given $d \in \mathbb{N}$, we establish sum-product estimates for finite, non-empty subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. This is equivalent to a sum-product result for sets of diagonal matrices. In particular, let $A$ be a finite, non-empty set of $d \times d$ diagonal matrices with real entries. Then for all $δ_1 < 1/3 + 5/5277$, we have \[ |A+A| + |A\cdot A| \gg_{d} |A|^{1 + δ_{1}/d}. \] In this setting, the above estimate quantitatively strengthens a result of Chang.
