In this paper we obtain explicit estimates and existence results on the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational solutions of certain systems defined by families of diagonal equations over finite fields. Our approach relies on the study of the geometric properties of the varieties defined by the systems involved. We apply these results to a generalization of Waring's problem and the distribution of solutions of congruences modulo a prime number.
Grothendieck-Birkhoff Theorem states that every finite dimensional vector bundle over the projective line splits as the sum of one dimensional vector bundles. In this work we study simultaneous splittings of two dimensional vector bundles over a finite field using the theory of Eichler orders. In the sheaf-theoretical context, an Eichler order in a matrix algebra is the intersection of the sheaves of endomorphisms of two vector bundles, so characterizing split Eichler orders solves the problem of simultaneous splitting. We caracterize both the genera of Eichler orders containing only split Eic…
We consider certain systems of three linked simultaneous diagonal equations in ten variables with total degree exceeding five. By means of a complification argument, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of integral solutions of this system of bounded height that resolves the associated paucity problem.
In this article we study the Gross-Schoen diagonal cycle on a triple product of Shimura curves at a place of bad reduction. We relate the image of the diagonal cycle under the Abel-Jacobi map to certain period integral that governs the central critical value of the Garrett-Rankin type triple product $L$-function via level raising congruences. As an application we prove certain rank $0$ case of the Bloch-Kato conjecture for the symmetric cube motive of a weight $2$ modular form.
We consider a translation and dilation invariant system consisting of k diagonal equations of degrees 1,2,...,k with integer coefficients in s variables, where s is sufficiently large in terms of k. We show via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method that if a subset A of the natural numbers restricted to the interval [1,N] satisfies Gowers' definition of uniformity of degree k, then it furnishes roughly the expected number of simultaneous solutions to the given equations. If A furnishes no non-trivial solutions to the given system, then we show that the number of elements of A in [1,N] grows no fa…
We consider the problem of recovering the entries of diagonal matrices $\{U_a\}_a$ for $a = 1,\ldots,t$ from multiple "incomplete" samples $\{W_a\}_a$ of the form $W_a=PU_aQ$, where $P$ and $Q$ are unknown matrices of low rank. We devise practical algorithms for this problem depending on the ranks of $P$ and $Q$. This problem finds its motivation in cryptanalysis: we show how to significantly improve previous algorithms for solving the approximate common divisor problem and breaking CLT13 cryptographic multilinear maps.
We obtain asymptotic upper bounds for the number of natural solutions of the following diagonal Diophantine equations in a hypercube with side - $N$ in the paper: $x_1 = x_2^k+...+x_s^k$, $x_1^k = x_2^k+...+x_s^k$, $x_1 = \sum_{j=2}^s {x_j}^{k_j}$, where $k,s,k_j$ are the natural numbers.
In this paper, we obtain a general expression for the entries of the lth (l is integer) powers of even order (2k+1)-diagonal Toeplitz matrices. Additionally, we have the complex factorizations of Fibonacci polynomials.
The system of equations \[ u_1p_1^2 + \ldots + u_sp_s^2 = 0 \] \[ v_1p_1^3 + \ldots + v_sp_s^3 = 0 \] has prime solutions $(p_1, \ldots, p_s)$ for $s \geq 12$, assuming that the system has solutions modulo each prime $p$. This is proved via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, building on Wooley's work on the corresponding system over the integers and recent results on Vinogradov's mean value theorem. Additionally, a set of sufficient conditions for local solvability is given: If both equations are solvable modulo 2, the quadratic equation is solvable modulo 3, and for each prime $p$ at least 7…
We establish new pair correlation results for certain generic homogenous diagonal forms evaluated on the integers. Methods are analytic leading to explicit quantitative statements.
We establish the Hasse Principle for systems of r simultaneous diagonal cubic equations whenever the number of variables exceeds 6r and the associated coefficient matrix contains no singular r x r submatrix, thereby achieving the theoretical limit of the circle method for such systems.
In this paper, we consider the following diagonal quadratic forms \begin{equation*} a_1x_1^2 + a_2x_2^2 + \cdots + a_{\ell}x_{\ell}^2, \end{equation*} where $\ell\ge 5$ is an odd integer and $a_i\ge 1$ are integers. By using the extended Shimura correspondence, we obtain explicit formulas for the number of representations of $|D|n^2$ by the above type of quadratic forms, where $D$ is either a square-free integer or a fundamental discriminant such that $(-1)^{(\ell-1)/2}D > 0$. We demonstrate our method with many examples, in particular, we obtain all the formulas (when $\ell =5$) obtained in t…
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of integral solutions of bounded height for pairs of diagonal quartic equations in $26$ or more variables. In certain cases, pairs in $25$ variables can be handled.
We investigate diagonal forms of degree $d$ over the function field $F$ of a smooth projective $p$-adic curve: if a form is isotropic over the completion of $F$ with respect to each discrete valuation of $F$, then it is isotropic over certain fields $F_U$, $F_P$ and $F_p$. These fields appear naturally when applying the methodology of patching; $F$ is the inverse limit of the finite inverse system of fields $\{F_U,F_P,F_p\}$. Our observations complement some known bounds on the higher $u$-invariant of diagonal forms of degree $d$. We only consider diagonal forms of degree $d$ over fields of ch…
We investigate the existence of representations of every large positive integer as a sum of $k$-th powers of integers represented as certain diagonal forms. In particular, we consider a family of diagonal forms and discuss the problem of giving a uniform upper bound over the family for the number of variables needed to have such representations.
In this note we consider Diophantine equations of the form \begin{equation*} a(x^p-y^q) = b(z^r-w^s), \quad \mbox{where}\quad \frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{s}=1, \end{equation*} with even positive integers $p,q,r,s$. We show that in each case the set of rational points on the underlying surface is dense in the Zariski topology. For the surface with $(p,q,r,s)=(2,6,6,6)$ we prove density of rational points in the Euclidean topology. Moreover, in this case we construct infinitely many parametric solutions in coprime polynomials. The same result is true for $(p,q,r,s)\in\{(2,4,8,8)…
Hamiltonians are 2-by-2 positive semidefinite real symmetric matrix-valued functions satisfying certain conditions. In this paper, we solve the inverse problem for which recovers a Hamiltonian from the solution of a first-order system attached to a given Hamiltonian, consisting of ordinary differential equations parametrized by a set of complex numbers, under certain conditions for the solutions. This inverse problem is a generalization of the inverse problem for two-dimensional canonical systems.
The Thue-Siegel method is applied to derive an upper bound for the number of solutions to Thue's equation $F(x,y) = 1$ where $F$ is a quartic diagonalizable form with negative discriminant. Computation is used in this argument to handle forms whose discriminant is small in absolute value. We then apply our results to bound the number of integral points on a certain family of elliptic curves.
We compute the Artin $L$-function of a diagonal hypersurface D_λ over a finite field associated to a character of a finite group acting on D_λ , and under some condition, express it in terms of hypergeometric functions and Jacobi sums over the finite field. As an application, we consider the Dwork hypersurfaces and obtain relations among certain hypergeometric functions over different finite fields.
Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums are defined as a generalization of a recent 1-dimensional probability model of Dilcher and Girstmair to a d-dimensional cube. The analysis of the frequency distribution of marked lattice points leads to new formulae in certain special cases, and to new bounds for the classical Dedekind sums. Upper bounds for the generalized Dedekind sums are defined in terms of 1-dimensional moments. In the classical two-dimensional case, the ratio of these sums to their upper bounds are cosines of angles between certain vectors of n-dimensional cones, conjectured to have a lar…
The exponential generating function of ordinary generating functions of diagonal sequences of general Sheffer triangles is computed by an application of Lagrange's theorem. For the special Jabotinsky type this is already known. An analogous computation for general Riordan number triangles leads to a formula for the logarithmic generating function of the ordinary generating functions of the product of the entries of the diagonal sequence of Pascal's triangle and those of the {Riordan triangle. For some examples these ordinary generating functions yield in both cases coefficient triangles of cer…
In this paper, we estimate the simultaneous approximation exponents of the values of certain Mahler functions. For this we construct Hermite-Padé approximations of the functions under consideration, then apply the functional equations to get an infinite sequence of approximations and use the numerical approximations obtained from this sequence.
We obtain bounds for the number of variables required to establish Hasse principles, both for existence of solutions and for asymptotic formulae, for systems of additive equations containing forms of differing degree but also multiple forms of like degree. Apart from the very general estimates of Schmidt and Browning--Heath-Brown, which give weak results when specialized to the diagonal situation, this is the first result on such "hybrid" systems.
