Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. In this paper, we study the number of solutions of equations of the form $a_1 x_1^{d_1}+\dots+a_s x_s^{d_s}=b$ with $x_i\in\mathbb{F}_{p^{t_i}}$, where $b\in\mathbb{F}_q$ and $t_i|n$ for all $i=1,\dots,s$. In our main results, we employ results on quadratic forms to give an explicit formula for the number of solutions of diagonal equations with restricted solution sets satisfying certain natural restrictions on the exponents. As a consequence, we present conditions for the existence of solutions. We also discuss further questions concerning equations with restricted solution sets and present some open problems.
We establish the analytic Hasse principle for Diophantine systems consisting of one diagonal form of degree $k$ and one general form of degree $d$, where $d$ is smaller than $k$. By employing a hybrid method that combines ideas from the study of general forms with techniques adapted to the diagonal case, we are able to obtain bounds that grow exponentially in $d$ but only quadratically in $k$, reflecting the growth rates typically obtained for both problems separately. We also discuss some of the most interesting generalisations of our approach.
We investigate one-dimensional families of diagonal forms, considering the evolution of the asymptotic formula and error term. We then discuss properties of the average asymptotic formula obtained. The subsequent second moment analysis precipitates an effective means of computing $p$-adic densities of zeros for large primes $p$.
We investigate the approximation to the number of primes in arithmetic progressions given by Vaughan. Instead of averaging the expected error term over all residue classes to modules in a given range, here we only consider subsets of arithmetic progressions that satisfy additional congruence conditions and provide asymptotic approximations.
Let $A$ be a nonempty finite subset of an additive abelian group $G$. Define $A + A := \{a + b : a, b \in A\}$ and $A \dotplus A := \{a + b : a, b \in A~\text{and}~ a \neq b\}$. The set $A$ is called a {\em sum-dominant (SD) set} if $|A + A| > |A - A|$, and it is called a {\em restricted sum-domonant (RSD) set} if $|A \dotplus A| > |A - A|$. In this paper, we prove that for infinitely many positive integers $k$, there are infinitely many RSD sets of integers of cardinality $k$. We also provide an explicit construction of infinite sequence of RSD sets.
For a set of integers $A$, we consider $R(A)=\{a/b: a, b\in A, b\neq 0\}$. It is an open problem to study the denseness of $R(A)$ in the $p$-adic numbers when $A$ is the set of nonzero values attained by an integral form. This problem has been answered for quadratic forms. Very recently, Antony and Barman have studied this problem for the diagonal binary cubic forms $ax^3+by^3$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers. In this article, we study this problem for diagonal forms. We extend the results of Antony and Barman to the diagonal binary forms $ax^n+by^n$ for all $n\geq 3$. We also study $p$-adic d…
In [10] the third author of this paper presented two conjectures on the additive decomposability of the sequence of ''smooth'' (or ''friable'') numbers. Elsholtz and Harper [4] proved (by using sieve methods) the second (less demanding) conjecture. The goal of this paper is to extend and sharpen their result in three directions by using a different approach (based on the theory of $S$-unit equations).
In part I of this paper we studied additive decomposability of the set $\F_y$ of th $y$-smooth numbers and the multiplicative decomposability of the shifted set $\g_y=\F_y+\{1\}$. In this paper, focusing on the case of 'large' functions $y$, we continue the study of these problems. Further, we also investigate a problem related to the m-decomposability of $k$-term sumsets, for arbitrary $k$.
We prove some results of Kemperman--Scherk type for restricted product sets in multiplicative groups of fields (in particular, for cyclic groups). The proofs use polynomial method.
Let $F \subseteq [0,1]$ be a set that supports a probability measure $μ$ with the property that $ |\widehatμ(t)| \ll (\log |t|)^{-A}$ for some constant $ A > 0 $. Let $\mathcal{A}= (q_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}} $ be a sequence of natural numbers. If $\mathcal{A}$ is lacunary and $A >2$, we establish a quantitative inhomogeneous Khintchine-type theorem in which (i) the points of interest are restricted to $F$ and (ii) the denominators of the `shifted' rationals are restricted to $\mathcal{A}$. The theorem can be viewed as a natural strengthening of the fact that the sequence $(q_nx {\rm \ mod \, } 1)…
We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.
We consider a translation and dilation invariant system consisting of k diagonal equations of degrees 1,2,...,k with integer coefficients in s variables, where s is sufficiently large in terms of k. We show via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method that if a subset A of the natural numbers restricted to the interval [1,N] satisfies Gowers' definition of uniformity of degree k, then it furnishes roughly the expected number of simultaneous solutions to the given equations. If A furnishes no non-trivial solutions to the given system, then we show that the number of elements of A in [1,N] grows no fa…
We study the number of solutions $N(B,F)$ of the diophantine equation $n_1n_2=n_3n_4$, where $1\le n_1\le B$, $1\le n_3\le B$, $n_2, n_4\in F$ and $F\subset [1,B]$ is a factor closed set. We study more particularly the case when $F= \big\{m=p_1^{\e_1}\ldots p_k^{\e_k}, \e_j\in \{0,1\}, 1\le j\le k\big\}$, $p_1,\ldots,p_k$ being distinct prime numbers.
We calculate the measure and Hausdorff dimension of sets of matrices over fields of formal power series with good approximation properties for a restricted set of denominators.

A set of natural numbers is primitive if no element of the set divides another. Erdős conjectured that if S is any primitive set, then \sum_{n\in S} 1/(n log n) \le \sum_{n\in ¶} 1/(p log p), where ¶denotes the set of primes. In this paper, we make progress towards this conjecture by restricting the setting to smaller sets of primes. Let P denote any subset of ¶, and let N(P) denote the set of natural numbers all of whose prime factors are in P. We say that P is Erdős-best among primitive subsets of N(P) if the inequality \sum_{n\in S} 1/(n log n) \le \sum_{n\in P} 1/(p log p) holds for every …
In this note we find the optimal lower bound for the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ over finite sets $H, A$ of nonnegative integers, where $HA = \bigcup_{h\in H} hA$ and $H\,\hat{}A = \bigcup_{h\in H} h\,\hat{}A$. We also find the underlying algebraic structure of the sets $A$ and $H$ for which the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ is minimum.
I. J. Good (1941) showed that the set of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$ whose partial quotients $a_n$ tend to infinity is of Hausdorff dimension $1/2$. A number of related results impose restrictions of the type $a_n\in B$ or $a_n\geq f(n)$, where $B$ is an infinite subset of $\mathbb N$ and $f$ is a rapidly growing function with $n$. We show that, for an arbitrary $B$ and an arbitrary $f$ with values in $[\min B,\infty)$ and tending to infinity, the set of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$ such that \[ a_n\in B,\ a_n\leq f(n)\text{ for all $n\in\mathbb N$, and }a_n\to\infty\text{ as }n\to\infty\] …
We consider the structure ${\mathbb R}^{\mathrm{RE}}$ obtained from $({\mathbb R},<,+,\cdot)$ by adjoining the restricted exponential and sine functions. We prove Wilkie's conjecture for sets definable in this structure: the number of rational points of height $H$ in the transcendental part of any definable set is bounded by a polynomial in $\log H$. We also prove two refined conjectures due to Pila concerning the density of algebraic points from a fixed number field, or with a fixed algebraic degree, for ${\mathbb R}^{\mathrm{RE}}$-definable sets.
For an integer $b \geqslant 2$ and a set $S\subset \{0,\cdots,b-1\}$, we define the Kempner set $\mathcal{K}(S,b)$ to be the set of all non-negative integers whose base-$b$ digital expansions contain only digits from $S$. These well-studied sparse sets provide a rich setting for additive number theory, and in this paper we study various questions relating to the appearance of arithmetic progressions in these sets. In particular, for all $b$ we determine exactly the maximal length of an arithmetic progression that omits a base-$b$ digit.
Given $d \in \mathbb{N}$, we establish sum-product estimates for finite, non-empty subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. This is equivalent to a sum-product result for sets of diagonal matrices. In particular, let $A$ be a finite, non-empty set of $d \times d$ diagonal matrices with real entries. Then for all $δ_1 < 1/3 + 5/5277$, we have \[ |A+A| + |A\cdot A| \gg_{d} |A|^{1 + δ_{1}/d}. \] In this setting, the above estimate quantitatively strengthens a result of Chang.
