Given a bounded measurable function $σ$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we let $T_σ$ be the operator obtained by multiplication on the Fourier transform by $σ$. Let $0<s_1\le s_2\le \cdots \le s_n<1$ and $ψ$ be a Schwartz function on the real line whose Fourier transform $\widehatψ$ is supported in $[-2,-1/2]\cup[1/2,2]$ and which satisfies $\sum_{j \in \mathbb{Z}} \widehatψ\left(2^{-j} ξ\right)=1$ for all $ξ\neq 0$. In this work we sharpen the known forms of the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem by finding an almost optimal function space with the property that, if the function \begin{equation*} (ξ_1,\dots, ξ_n)\mapsto \prod_{i=1}^n (I-\partial_i^2)^{\frac {s_i}2} \Big[ \prod_{i=1}^n \widehatψ(ξ_i) σ(2^{j_1}ξ_1,\dots , 2^{j_n}ξ_n)\Big] \end{equation*} belongs to it uniformly in $j_1,\dots , j_n \in \mathbb Z$, then $T_σ$ is bounded on $ {L}^p(\mathbb R^n)$ when $ |\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{2} | < s_1$ and $1<p<\infty$. In the case where $s_i\neq s_{i+1}$ for all $i$, it was proved in [Grafakos, Israel J. Math., to appear] that the Lorentz space $L ^{\frac{1}{s_1},1} (\mathbb{R}^n) $ is the function space sought. In this work we address the significantly more difficult general case when for certain indices $i$ we might have $s_i=s_{i+1}$. We obtain a version of the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem in which the space $L ^{\frac{1}{s_1},1}$ is replaced by an appropriate Lorentz space associated with a certain concave function related to the number of terms among $s_2,\dots , s_n$ that equal $s_1$. Our result is optimal up to an arbitrarily small power of the logarithm in the defining concave function of the Lorentz space.
We establish sharp (H^1, L^{1,q}) and local (L \log^r L, L^{1,q}) mapping properties for rough one-dimensional multipliers. In particular, we show that the multipliers in the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem map H^1 to L^{1,\infty} and L \log^{1/2} L to L^{1,\infty}, and that these estimates are sharp.
Quantitative weighted estimates are obtained for the Littlewood-Paley square function $S$ associated with a lacunary decomposition of ${\mathbb R}$ and for the Marcinkiewicz multiplier operator. In particular, we find the sharp dependence on $[w]_{A_p}$ for the $L^p(w)$ operator norm of $S$ for $1<p\le 2$.
We prove endpoint-type sparse bounds for Walsh-Fourier Marcinkiewicz multipliers and Littlewood-Paley square functions. These results are motivated by conjectures of Lerner in the Fourier setting. As a corollary, we obtain novel quantitative weighted norm inequalities for these operators. Among these, we establish the sharp growth rate of the $L^p$ weighted operator norm in terms of the $A_p$ characteristic in the full range $1<p<\infty$ for Walsh-Littlewood-Paley square functions, and a restricted range for Marcinkiewicz multipliers. Zygmund's $L{(\log L)^{\frac12}}$ inequality is the core of…
We consider the weighted Sobolev spaces associated with non-isotropic dilations of Calderón-Torchinsky and characterize the spaces by the square functions of Marcinkiewicz type including those defined with repeated uses of averaging operation.
Let $X_1$ and $X_2$ be metric spaces equipped with doubling measures and let $L_1$ and $L_2$ be nonnegative self-adjoint second-order operators acting on $L^2(X_1)$ and $L^2(X_2)$ respectively. We study multivariable spectral multipliers $F(L_1, L_2)$ acting on the Cartesian product of $X_1$ and $X_2$. Under the assumptions of the finite propagation speed property and Plancherel or Stein--Tomas restriction type estimates on the operators $L_1$ and~$L_2$, we show that if a function~$F$ satisfies a Marcinkiewicz-type differential condition then the spectral multiplier operator $F(L_1, L_2)$ is b…
This 1995 paper contains a sharp version of the classical Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem for the class of homogeneous Fourier multipliers in two dimensions; here a one-dimensional Marcinkiewicz condition is sufficient. Examples are given to show that the straightforward extension of this statement to higher dimensions does not hold. We provide appropriate versions in higher dimensions which rely on a Fefferman-Stein weighted norm inequality for a relevant Córdoba type square function. The proof of this inequality is given by an early version of an induction on scales argument. For $p<1$ we p…
Marcinkiewicz multipliers are L^{p} bounded for 1<p<\infty on the Heisenberg group H^{n}\simeqC^{n}\timesR (D. Muller, F. Ricci and E. M. Stein) despite the lack of a two parameter group of automorphic dilations on H^{n}. This lack of dilations underlies the inability of classical one or two parameter Hardy space theory to handle Marcinkiewicz multipliers on H^{n} when 0<p\leq1. We address this deficiency by developing a theory of flag Hardy spaces H_{flag}^{p} on the Heisenberg group, 0<p\leq1, that is in a sense `intermediate' between the classical Hardy spaces H^{p} and the product Hardy sp…
We prove endpoint bounds for the square function associated with radial Fourier multipliers acting on $L^{p}$ radial functions. This is a consequence of endpoint bounds for a corresponding square function for Hankel multipliers. We obtain a sharp Marcinkiewicz-type multiplier theorem for multivariate Hankel multipliers and $L^p$ bounds of maximal operators generated by Hankel multipliers as corollaries. The proof is built on techniques developed by Garrigós and Seeger for characterizations of Hankel multipliers.
Under the assumption that orthogonal polynomials of several variables admit an addition formula, we can define a convolution structure and use it to study the Fourier orthogonal expansions on a homogeneous space. We define a maximal function via the convolution structure induced by the addition formula and use it to establish a Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem. For the homogeneous space defined by a family of weight functions on conic domains, we show that the maximal function is bounded by the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function so that the multiplier theorem holds on conic domains.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
We prove weighted inequalities between the Gagliardo and Sobolev seminorms and also between the Marcinkiewicz quasi-norm and the Sobolev seminorm. With $A_1$ weights we improve earlier results of Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu.
We consider bilinear multipliers that appeared as a distinguished particular case in the classification of two-dimensional bilinear Hilbert transforms by Demeter and Thiele [9]. In this note we investigate their boundedness on Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we study structurally similar operators with symbols that also depend on the spatial variables. The new results build on the existing L^p estimates for a paraproduct-like operator previously studied by the authors in [5] and [10]. Our primary intention is to emphasize the analogies with Coifman-Meyer multipliers and with bilinear pseudodiffer…
In this paper we find new equivalent norms in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{B})$ by using multivariate Littlewood-Paley functions associated with Poisson semigroup for the Hermite operator, provided that $\mathbb{B}$ is a UMD Banach space with the property ($α$). We make use of $γ$-radonifying operators to get new equivalent norms that allow us to obtain $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{B})$-boundedness properties for (vector valued) multivariate spectral multipliers for Hermite operators. As application of this Hermite multiplier theorem we prove that the Banach valued Hermite Sobolev and potential spac…
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for multilinear multiplier operators with symbols in $L^r$-based product-type Sobolev spaces uniformly over all annuli to be bounded from products of Hardy spaces to a Lebesgue space. We consider the case $1<r\leq 2$ and we characterize boundedness in terms of inequalities relating the Lebesgue indices (or Hardy indices), the dimension, and the regularity and integrability indices of the Sobolev space. The case $r>2$ cannot be handled by known techniques and remains open. Our result not only extends but also establishes the sharpness of previous r…
In this paper we have studied Fourier multipliers and Littlewood-Paley square functions in the context of modulation spaces. We have also proved that any bounded linear operator from modulation space $\mathcal{M}_{p,q}(\R^n), 1\leq p,q\leq \infty,$ into itself possesses an $l_2-$valued extension. This is an analogue of a well known result due to Marcinkiewicz and Zygmund on classical $L^p-$spaces.
We provide an improvement of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in which the Sobolev space $L^r_s(\mathbb R^n)$ with integrability index $r$ and smoothness index $s>n/r$ is replaced by the Sobolev space with smoothness $s$ built upon the Lorentz space $L^{n/s,1}(\mathbb R^n)$.
We provide an improvement of Calderón and Torchinsky's version of the Hörmander multiplier theorem on Hardy spaces $H^p$ ($0<p<\infty$), by replacing the Sobolev space $L_s^2(A_0)$ by the Lorentz-Sobolev space $L_s^{τ^{(s,p)} ,\min(1,p) }(A_0)$, where $τ^{(s,p)} =\frac{n}{s-(n/\min{(1,p)}-n)}$ and $A_0$ is the annulus $\{ξ\in \mathbb{R}^n: 1/2<|ξ|<2\}$. Our theorem also extends that of Grafakos and Slavíková to the range $0<p\le 1$. Our result is sharp in the sense that the preceding Lorentz-Sobolev space cannot be replaced by a smaller Lorentz-Sobolev space $L^{r,q}_s(A_0)$ with $r< τ^{(s,p)}…
In this article, we provide a multilinear version of the Hörmander multiplier theorem with a Lorentz-Sobolev space condition. The work is motivated by the recent result of the first author and Slavíková where an analogous version of classical Hörmander multiplier theorem was obtained; this version is sharp in many ways and reduces the number of indices that appear in the statement of the theorem. As a natural extension of the linear case, in this work, we prove that if $mn/2<s<mn$, then $$ \big\Vert T_σ(f_1,\dots,f_m)\big\Vert_{L^p((\mathbb{R})^n)}\lesssim \sup_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\big\Vert σ(2^k\…
We discuss the Hörmander multiplier theorem for $L^p$ boundedness of Fourier multipliers in which the multiplier belongs to a fractional Sobolev space with smoothness $s$. We show that this theorem does not hold in the limiting case $|1/p-1/2|=s/n$.
We consider certain Littlewood-Paley operators and prove characterization of some function spaces in terms of those operators. When treating weighted Lebesgue spaces, a generalization to weighted spaces will be made for Hörmander's theorem on the invertibility of homogeneous Fourier multipliers. Also, applications to the theory of Sobolev spaces will be given.
In the present work some Jackson Stechkin type direct theorems of trigonometric approximation are proved in Orlicz spaces with weights satisfying some Muckenhoupt's $A_{p}$ condition. To obtain refined version of the Jackson type inequality we prove an extrapolation theorem, Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem and Littlewood Paley type results. As a consequence refined inverse Marchaud type inequalities are obtained. By means of a realization result we find an equivalence between the fractional order weighted modulus of smoothness and the classical weighted Peetre's K-functional.
We investigate Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols defined over locally compact Hausdorff groups. Our main results in this paper establish new Hörmander-Mikhlin criteria for spectral and non-spectral multipliers. The key novelties which shape our approach are three. First, we control a broad class of Fourier multipliers by certain maximal operators in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. This general principle ---exploited in Euclidean harmonic analysis during the last 40 years--- is of independent interest and might admit further applications. Second, we replace the formerly used cocycle dimensio…
We prove a characterization of the Sobolev spaces $H^α$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, where the smoothness index $α$ is any positive real number and $d\geq 2$. This characterization does not use differentiation and it is given in terms of $([α/2]+1)$-multidimensional square functions $S_α$. For $[α/2]=0,$ a function $f\in L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ belongs to $H^α(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ if and only if $S_α(f)\in L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$. If $n=[α/2]>0$, the membership of $f$ is equivalent to the existence of $g_1,\cdots,g_n$ in $L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ such that $S_α(f,g_1,\ldots,g_n)\in L^2(\ma…
We discuss $L^p(\mathbb R^n)$ boundedness for Fourier multiplier operators that satisfy the hypotheses of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in terms of an optimal condition that relates the distance $|\frac 1p-\frac12|$ to the smoothness $s$ of the associated multiplier measured in some Sobolev norm. We provide new counterexamples to justify the optimality of the condition $|\frac 1p-\frac12|<\frac sn$ and we discuss the endpoint case $|\frac 1p-\frac12|=\frac sn$.
We prove endpoint bounds for derivatives of fractional maximal functions with either smooth convolution kernel or lacunary set of radii in dimensions $n \geq 2$. We also show that the spherical fractional maximal function maps $L^{p}$ into a first order Sobolev space in dimensions $n \geq 5$.
We prove an alternate Toeplitz corona theorem for the algebras of pointwise kernel multipliers of Besov-Sobolev spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, and for the algebra of bounded analytic functions on certain strictly pseudoconvex domains and polydiscs in higher dimensions as well. This alternate Toeplitz corona theorem extends to more general Hilbert function spaces where it does not require the complete Pick property. Instead, the kernel functions $k_{x}\left(y\right)$ of certain Hilbert function spaces $\mathcal{H}$ are assumed to be invertible multipliers on $\mathcal{H}$, and the…
We study multiplier theorems on a vector-valued function space, which is a generalization of the results of Calderón-Torchinsky and Grafakos-He-Honzík-Nguyen, and an improvement of the result of Triebel. For $0<p<\infty$ and $0<q\leq \infty$ we obtain that if $r>\frac{d}{s-(d/\min{(1,p,q)}-d)}$, then $$\big\Vert \big\{\big( m_k \hat{f_k}\big)^{\vee}\big\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}\big\Vert_{L^p(l^q)}\lesssim_{p,q} \sup_{l\in\mathbb{N}}{\big\Vert m_l(2^l\cdot)\big\Vert_{L_s^r(\mathbb{R}^d)}} \big\Vert \big\{f_k\big\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}\big\Vert_{L^p(l^q)}, ~~f_k\in\mathcal{E}(A2^k),$$ under the condition …
In a previous work we proved a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for two-dimensional Grushin operators $-\partial_x^2 - V(x) \partial_y^2$, where $V$ is a doubling single-well potential, yielding the surprising result that the optimal smoothness requirement on the multiplier is independent of $V$. Here we refine this result, by replacing the $L^\infty$ Sobolev condition on the multiplier with a sharper $L^2$ condition. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp range of $L^1$ boundedness for the associated Bochner--Riesz means. The key new ingredient of the proof is a precise po…
In this note we give an alternative proof of a theorem due to Bourgain \cite{Bourgain} concerning the growth of the constant in the Littlewood-Paley inequality on $\mathbb{T}$ as $p \rightarrow 1^+$. Our argument is based on the endpoint mapping properties of Marcinkiewicz multiplier operators, obtained by Tao and Wright in \cite{TW}, and on Tao's converse extrapolation theorem \cite{Tao}. Our method also establishes the growth of the constant in the Littlewood-Paley inequality on $\mathbb{T}^n$ as $p \rightarrow 1^+$. Furthermore, we obtain sharp weak-type inequalities for the Littlewood-Pale…
The reappearance of a sometimes called exotic behavior for linear and multilinear pseudodifferential operators is investigated. The phenomenon is shown to be present in a recently introduced class of bilinear pseudodifferential operators which can be seen as more general variable coefficient counterparts of the bilinear Hilbert transform and other singular bilinear multipliers operators. The unboundedness on product of Lebesgue spaces but the boundedness on spaces of smooth functions (which is the exotic behavior referred to) of such operators is obtained. In addition, by introducing a new way…
Given two real numbers, the $L^2$ functions whose Fourier transforms vanish with a certain rapidity near the given numbers are characterised as those that are expressible as the sum of a certain number of generalised finite differences that is independent of the function. These generalised differences can be regarded as approximating the appropriate powers of first order ordinary differential operators. The upshot of this is that for operators in a certain class of ordinary differential operators that have polynomial multipliers, their ranges on the Sobolev spaces corresponding to the operator…
In this paper we show that the solution of the supercrti- cal surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation, starting from initial data in homogeneous critical Besov spaces belong to a subanalytic Gevrey class. In particular, we improve upon the result of Dong and Li in [26], where they showed that the solutions of Chen-Miao-Zhang (cf. [11]) are classical solutions. We extend the approach of Biswas (cf. [7]) to critical, L^p -based Besov spaces, and adapt the point of view of Lemarie- Rieusset (cf. [36]), who treated the operator arising from applying the analytic Gevrey operator to a product of an…
Let $P(D)$ be the Laplacian $Δ,$ or the wave operator $\square$. The following type of Carleman estimate is known to be true on a certain range of $p,q$: \[ \|e^{v\cdot x}u\|_{L^q(\mathbb{R}^d)} \le C\|e^{v\cdot x}P(D)u\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)} \] with $C$ independent of $v\in \mathbb{R}^d$. The estimates are consequences of the uniform Sobolev type estimates for second order differential operators due to Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge \cite{KRS} and Jeong-Kwon-Lee \cite{JKL}. The range of $p,q$ for which the uniform Sobolev type estimates hold was completely characterized for the second order differential ope…
A full interpolation theory for Sobolev functions with smoothness between 0 and 1 and vanishing trace on a part of the boundary of an open set is established. Geometric assumptions are of mostly measure theoretic nature and reach beyond Lipschitz regular domains. Previous results were limited to regular geometric configurations or Hilbertian Sobolev spaces. Sets with porous boundary and their characteristic multipliers on smoothness spaces play a major role in the arguments.
The purpose of this paper is to characterize all embeddings for versions of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces where the underlying Lebesgue space metric is replaced by a Lorentz space metric. We include two appendices, one on the relation between classes of endpoint Mikhlin-Hörmander type Fourier multipliers, and one on the constant in the triangle inequality for the spaces $L^{p,r} $ when $p<1$.
Let S be a Damek-Ricci space and L be a distinguished left invariant Laplacian on S. We prove pointwise estimates for the convolution kernels of spectrally localized wave operators associated with L. This generalizes previous results proved by D. Mueller and C. Thiele on ax+b-groups. We also prove pointwise estimates of the gradient of these convolution kernels. As a corollary we reprove basic multiplier estimates from previous papers of W. Hebisch and T. Steger and M. Vallarino by different methods. Finally we derive Sobolev estimates for the solution to the wave equation associated with L.
We develop a special multilinear complex interpolation theorem that allows us to prove an optimal version of the bilinear Hörmander multiplier theorem concerning symbols that lie in the Sobolev space $L^r_s(\mathbb R^{2n})$, $2\le r<\infty$, $rs>2n$, uniformly over all annuli. More precisely, given a smoothness index $s$, we find the largest open set of indices $(1/p_1,1/p_2 )$ for which we have boundedness for the associated bilinear multiplier operator from $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^{ n})\times L^{p_2} (\mathbb R^{ n})$ to $ L^p(\mathbb R^{ n})$ when $1/p=1/p_1+1/p_2$, $1<p_1,p_2<\infty$.
This paper comprises two parts. We first investigate a $L^p$ type of limiting absorption principle for Schrödinger operators $H=-Δ+V$, i.e., In $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\ge 3$) we prove the $ε-$uniform $L^{\frac{2(n+1)}{n+3}}$-$L^{\frac{2(n+1)}{n-1}}$ estimates of the resolvent $(H-λ\pm iε)^{-1}$ for all $λ>0$ when the potential $V$ belongs to some integrable spaces and a spectral condition of $H$ at zero is assumed. As an application, we establish a sharp spectral multiplier theorem and $L^p$ bound of Bochner-Riesz means associated with Schrödinger operators $H$. Next, we consider the fractional Sch…
Estimates of Kolmogorov $n$-widths $d_n(B_p^r, L^q)$ and linear $n$-widths $\da_n(B_p^r, L^q)$, ($1\leq q\leq \infty$) of Sobolev's classes $B_p^r$, ($r>0$, $1\leq p\leq \infty$) on compact two-point homogeneous spaces (CTPHS) are established. For part of $(p, q)\in[1,\infty]\times[1,\infty]$, sharp orders of $d_n(B_p^r, L^q)$ or $\da_n (B_p^r, L^q) $ were obtained by Bordin, Kushpel, Levesley and Tozoni in a recent paper `` J. Funct. Anal. 202 (2) (2003), 307--326''. In this paper, we obtain the sharp orders of $d_n(B_p^r, L^q)$ and $\da_n (B_p^r, L^q)$ for all the remaining $ (p,q)$. Our pro…
We prove that the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson Hardy space $H_{n}^{2}$ on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ has no corona in its maximal ideal space, thus generalizing the famous Corona Theorem of L. Carleson to higher dimensions. This result is obtained as a corollary of the Toeplitz corona theorem and a new Banach space result: the Besov-Sobolev space $B_{p}^σ$ has the "baby corona property" for all $σ\geq 0$ and $1<p<\infty $. In addition we obtain infinite generator and semi-infinite matrix versions of these theorems.
Let $m\ge 1$, in this paper, our object of investigation is the regularity and and continuity properties of the following multilinear strong maximal operator $${\mathscr{M}}_{\mathcal{R}}(\vec{f})(x)=\sup_{\substack{R \ni x R\in\mathcal{R}}}\prod\limits_{i=1}^m\frac{1}{|R|}\int_{R}|f_i(y)|dy,$$ where $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathcal{R}$ denotes the family of all rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with sides parallel to the axes. When $m=1$, denote $\mathscr{M}_{\mathcal{R}}$ by $\mathcal {M}_{\mathcal{R}}$.Then, $\mathcal {M}_{\mathcal{R}}$ coincides with the classical strong maximal function initia…
We establish smoothing estimates in the framework of hyperbolic Sobolev spaces for the velocity averaging operator $ρ$ of the solution of the kinetic transport equation. If the velocity domain is either the unit sphere or the unit ball, then, for any exponents $q$ and $r$, we find a characterisation of the exponents $β_+$ and $β_-$, except possibly for an endpoint case, for which $D_+^{β_+}D_-^{β_-} ρ$ is bounded from space-velocity $L^2_{x,v}$ to space-time $L^q_tL^r_x$. Here, $D_+$ and $D_-$ are the classical and hyperbolic derivative operators, respectively. In fact, we shall provide an arg…
In this paper, we consider the Lamé operator $-Δ^\ast$ and study resolvent estimate, uniform Sobolev estimate, and Carleman estimate for $-Δ^\ast$. First, we obtain sharp $L^p$--$L^q$ resolvent estimates for $-Δ^\ast$ for admissible $p,q$. This extends the particular case $q=\frac p{p-1}$ due to Barceló et al. \cite{BFPRV} and Cossetti \cite{Co19}. Secondly, we show failure of uniform Sobolev estimate and Carleman estimate for $-Δ^\ast$. For the purpose we directly analyze the Fourier multiplier of the resolvent. This allows us to prove not only the upper bound but also the lower bound on the …
This paper gives a systematic study of Sobolev, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on a noncommutative $d$-torus $\mathbb{T}^d_θ$ (with $θ$ a skew symmetric real $d\times d$-matrix). These spaces share many properties with their classical counterparts. We prove, among other basic properties, the lifting theorem for all these spaces and a Poincaré type inequality for Sobolev spaces. We also show that the Sobolev space $W^k_\infty(\mathbb{T}^d_θ)$ coincides with the Lipschitz space of order $k$, already studied by Weaver in the case $k=1$. We establish the embedding inequalities of all these spac…
