We establish sharp (H^1, L^{1,q}) and local (L \log^r L, L^{1,q}) mapping properties for rough one-dimensional multipliers. In particular, we show that the multipliers in the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem map H^1 to L^{1,\infty} and L \log^{1/2} L to L^{1,\infty}, and that these estimates are sharp.
Quantitative weighted estimates are obtained for the Littlewood-Paley square function $S$ associated with a lacunary decomposition of ${\mathbb R}$ and for the Marcinkiewicz multiplier operator. In particular, we find the sharp dependence on $[w]_{A_p}$ for the $L^p(w)$ operator norm of $S$ for $1<p\le 2$.
We prove endpoint-type sparse bounds for Walsh-Fourier Marcinkiewicz multipliers and Littlewood-Paley square functions. These results are motivated by conjectures of Lerner in the Fourier setting. As a corollary, we obtain novel quantitative weighted norm inequalities for these operators. Among these, we establish the sharp growth rate of the $L^p$ weighted operator norm in terms of the $A_p$ characteristic in the full range $1<p<\infty$ for Walsh-Littlewood-Paley square functions, and a restricted range for Marcinkiewicz multipliers. Zygmund's $L{(\log L)^{\frac12}}$ inequality is the core of…
Let $X_1$ and $X_2$ be metric spaces equipped with doubling measures and let $L_1$ and $L_2$ be nonnegative self-adjoint second-order operators acting on $L^2(X_1)$ and $L^2(X_2)$ respectively. We study multivariable spectral multipliers $F(L_1, L_2)$ acting on the Cartesian product of $X_1$ and $X_2$. Under the assumptions of the finite propagation speed property and Plancherel or Stein--Tomas restriction type estimates on the operators $L_1$ and~$L_2$, we show that if a function~$F$ satisfies a Marcinkiewicz-type differential condition then the spectral multiplier operator $F(L_1, L_2)$ is b…
We prove the endpoint weak type estimate for square functions of Marcinkiewicz type with fractional integrals associated with non-isotropic dilations. This generalizes a result of C. Fefferman on functions of Marcinkiewicz type by considering fractional integrals of mixed homogeneity in place of the Riesz potentials of Euclidean structure.
This 1995 paper contains a sharp version of the classical Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem for the class of homogeneous Fourier multipliers in two dimensions; here a one-dimensional Marcinkiewicz condition is sufficient. Examples are given to show that the straightforward extension of this statement to higher dimensions does not hold. We provide appropriate versions in higher dimensions which rely on a Fefferman-Stein weighted norm inequality for a relevant Córdoba type square function. The proof of this inequality is given by an early version of an induction on scales argument. For $p<1$ we p…
Marcinkiewicz multipliers are L^{p} bounded for 1<p<\infty on the Heisenberg group H^{n}\simeqC^{n}\timesR (D. Muller, F. Ricci and E. M. Stein) despite the lack of a two parameter group of automorphic dilations on H^{n}. This lack of dilations underlies the inability of classical one or two parameter Hardy space theory to handle Marcinkiewicz multipliers on H^{n} when 0<p\leq1. We address this deficiency by developing a theory of flag Hardy spaces H_{flag}^{p} on the Heisenberg group, 0<p\leq1, that is in a sense `intermediate' between the classical Hardy spaces H^{p} and the product Hardy sp…
Given a bounded measurable function $σ$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we let $T_σ$ be the operator obtained by multiplication on the Fourier transform by $σ$. Let $0<s_1\le s_2\le \cdots \le s_n<1$ and $ψ$ be a Schwartz function on the real line whose Fourier transform $\widehatψ$ is supported in $[-2,-1/2]\cup[1/2,2]$ and which satisfies $\sum_{j \in \mathbb{Z}} \widehatψ\left(2^{-j} ξ\right)=1$ for all $ξ\neq 0$. In this work we sharpen the known forms of the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem by finding an almost optimal function space with the property that, if the function \begin{equation*} (ξ_1,\dots…
We prove endpoint bounds for the square function associated with radial Fourier multipliers acting on $L^{p}$ radial functions. This is a consequence of endpoint bounds for a corresponding square function for Hankel multipliers. We obtain a sharp Marcinkiewicz-type multiplier theorem for multivariate Hankel multipliers and $L^p$ bounds of maximal operators generated by Hankel multipliers as corollaries. The proof is built on techniques developed by Garrigós and Seeger for characterizations of Hankel multipliers.
An extension of Marcinkiewicz Interpolation Theorem, allowing intermediate spaces of Orlicz type, is proved. This generalization yields a necessary and sufficient condition so that every quasilinear operator, which maps the set, $S(X,μ)$, of all $μ$-measurable simple functions on $σ$- finite measure space $(X,μ)$ into $M(Y,ν)$, the class of $ν$-measurable functions on $σ$- finite measure space $(Y,ν)$, and satisfies endpoint estimates of type: $1 < p< \infty$, $1 \leq r < \infty$, \begin{equation*} λ\, ν\left( \left\lbrace y \in Y : |(Tf)(y)| > λ\right\rbrace \right)^{\frac{1}{p}} \leq C_{p,r}…
Under the assumption that orthogonal polynomials of several variables admit an addition formula, we can define a convolution structure and use it to study the Fourier orthogonal expansions on a homogeneous space. We define a maximal function via the convolution structure induced by the addition formula and use it to establish a Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem. For the homogeneous space defined by a family of weight functions on conic domains, we show that the maximal function is bounded by the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function so that the multiplier theorem holds on conic domains.
We consider quasiradial Fourier multipliers, i.e. multipliers of the form $m(a(ξ))$ for a class of distance functions $a$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the multiplier transformations to be bounded on $L^p$ for a certain range of $p$. In addition, when $m$ is compactly supported in $(0,\infty)$, we give a similar result for associated maximal operators.
We introduce a maximal operator for the natural analogue of the disc multiplier in the framework of Jacobi analysis and determine the mapping properties of said maximal operator, including weak type endpoint results. In particular we obtain sharp information on the almost everywhere convergence of the inverse Jacobi transform.
For $ 0< λ< \frac{1}2$, let $ B_{λ}$ be the Bochner-Riesz multiplier of index $ λ$ on the plane. Associated to this multiplier is the critical index $1 < p_λ= \frac{4} {3+2 λ} < \frac{4}3$. We prove a sparse bound for $ B_{λ}$ with indices $ (p_λ, q)$, where $ p_λ' < q < 4$. This is a further quantification of the endpoint weak $L^{p_λ}$ boundedness of $ B_{λ}$, due to Seeger. Indeed, the sparse bound immediately implies new endpoint weighted weak type estimates for weights in $ A_1 \cap RH_{ρ}$, where $ ρ> \frac4 {4 - 3 p_{λ}}$.
In this note we give an alternative proof of a theorem due to Bourgain \cite{Bourgain} concerning the growth of the constant in the Littlewood-Paley inequality on $\mathbb{T}$ as $p \rightarrow 1^+$. Our argument is based on the endpoint mapping properties of Marcinkiewicz multiplier operators, obtained by Tao and Wright in \cite{TW}, and on Tao's converse extrapolation theorem \cite{Tao}. Our method also establishes the growth of the constant in the Littlewood-Paley inequality on $\mathbb{T}^n$ as $p \rightarrow 1^+$. Furthermore, we obtain sharp weak-type inequalities for the Littlewood-Pale…
We study a multilinear version of Hörmander multiplier theorem, namely \begin{equation*} \Vert T_σ(f_1,\dots,f_n)\Vert_{L^p}\lesssim \sup_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}{\Vert σ(2^k\cdot,\dots,2^k\cdot)\widehat{ϕ^{(n)}}\Vert_{L^{2}_{(s_1,\dots,s_n)}}}\Vert f_1\Vert_{H^{p_1}}\cdots\Vert f_n\Vert_{H^{p_n}}. \end{equation*} We show that the estimate does not hold in the limiting case $\min{(s_1,\dots,s_n)}=d/2$ or $\sum_{k\in J}{({s_k}/{d}-{1}/{p_k})}=-{1}/{2}$ for some $J \subset \{1,\dots,n\}$. This provides the necessary and sufficient condition on $(s_1,\dots,s_n)$ for the boundedness of $T_σ$.
It is well known that the Stein-Tomas $L^2$ Fourier restriction theorem can be used to derive sharp $L^p$ bounds for radial Fourier multipliers such as the Bochner-Riesz means. In a similar manner, $L^p \to L^2$ estimates for spectral projection operators have been utilized in order to obtain sharp $L^p$ bounds for spectral multipliers of self-adjoint elliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact manifolds. In this paper, we refine an endpoint result for spectral multipliers due to Seeger, providing endpoint bounds in terms of Besov spaces. Our proof is based on the ideas from the recent w…
We discuss $L^p(\mathbb R^n)$ boundedness for Fourier multiplier operators that satisfy the hypotheses of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in terms of an optimal condition that relates the distance $|\frac 1p-\frac12|$ to the smoothness $s$ of the associated multiplier measured in some Sobolev norm. We provide new counterexamples to justify the optimality of the condition $|\frac 1p-\frac12|<\frac sn$ and we discuss the endpoint case $|\frac 1p-\frac12|=\frac sn$.
In the present work some Jackson Stechkin type direct theorems of trigonometric approximation are proved in Orlicz spaces with weights satisfying some Muckenhoupt's $A_{p}$ condition. To obtain refined version of the Jackson type inequality we prove an extrapolation theorem, Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem and Littlewood Paley type results. As a consequence refined inverse Marchaud type inequalities are obtained. By means of a realization result we find an equivalence between the fractional order weighted modulus of smoothness and the classical weighted Peetre's K-functional.
We prove endpoint bounds for derivatives of fractional maximal functions with either smooth convolution kernel or lacunary set of radii in dimensions $n \geq 2$. We also show that the spherical fractional maximal function maps $L^{p}$ into a first order Sobolev space in dimensions $n \geq 5$.
We provide elementary proofs that the 2-variation Carleson operator $V_2$ along with explicit bilinear multipliers adapted to $\{ξ_1 + ξ_2 = 0\}$ satisfy no $L^p$ estimates. Furthermore, we obtain $L^p \rightarrow L^p$ estimates when $2 < p <\infty$ for a smooth restricted variant of $V_2$ that is defined a priori on Schwartz functions by the formula \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{V}^{res}_2 : f \mapsto \sup_{R \in \mathbb{R}_+} ~~\sup_{0 \leq α< R} ~~\left(\sum_{j \in \mathbb{Z}} \left|f*\mathcal{F}^{-1} \left[ \tilde{1}_{[α+ j R, α+ (j+1)R]}\right] \right|^2 \right)^{1/2} \end{eqnarray*} where $…
In this paper we solve three problems in noncommutative harmonic analysis which are related to endpoint inequalities for singular integrals. In first place, we prove that an $L_2$-form of Hörmander's kernel condition suffices for the weak type (1,1) of Calderón-Zygmund operators acting on matrix-valued functions. To that end, we introduce an improved CZ decomposition for martingale filtrations in von Neumann algebras, and apply a very simple unconventional argument which notably avoids pseudolocalization. In second place, we establish as well the weak $L_1$ endpoint for matrix-valued CZ operat…
We establish endpoint estimates for a class of oscillating spectral multipliers on Lie groups of Heisenberg type. The analysis follows an earlier argument due to the second and fourth author but requires the detailed analysis of the wave equation on these groups due to Müller and Seeger. We highlight and develop the connection between sharp bounds for oscillating multipliers and the problem of determining the minimal amount of smoothness required for Mihlin-Hörmander multipliers, a problem that was solved for groups of Heisenberg type but remains open for other groups.
In this paper we give a criterion to prove boundedness results for several operators from $H^1((0,\infty),γ_α)$ to $L^1((0,\infty),γ_α)$ and also from $L^\infty((0,\infty),γ_α)$ to $\BMO((0,\infty),γ_α)$, with respect to the probability measure $dγ_α(x)=\frac{2}{Γ(α+1)} x^{2α+1} e^{-x^2} dx$ on $(0,\infty)$ when ${α>-\frac12}$. We shall apply it to establish endpoint estimates for Riesz transforms, maximal operators, Littlewood-Paley functions, multipliers of Laplace transform type, fractional integrals and variation operators in the Laguerre setting.
The endpoint Strichartz estimate $\| e^{itΔ} f \|_{L^2_t L^\infty_x(\R \times \R^2)} \lesssim \|f\|_{L^2_x(\R^2)}$ is known to be false by the work of Montgomery-Smith, despite being only ``logarithmically far'' from being true in some sense. In this short note we show that (in sharp constrast to the $L^p_{t,x}$ Strichartz estimates) the situation is not improved by passing to a bilinear setting; more precisely, if $P, P'$ are non-trivial smooth Fourier cutoff multipliers then we show that the bilinear estimate $$\| (e^{itΔ} P f) (e^{itΔ} P' g) \|_{L^2_t L^\infty_x(\R \times \R^2)} \lesssim \|…
We consider several problems at or beyond endpoint in harmonic analysis. The solutions of these problems are related to the estimates of some classes of sublinear operators. To do this, we introduce some new functions spaces $RL^{p,s}_{|x|^α}({\bf R}^n)$ and $\dot{R}L^{p,s}_{|x|^α}({\bf R}^n)$, which play an analogue role with the classical Hardy spaces $H^p({\bf R}^n)$. These spaces are subspaces of $L^p_{|x|^α}({\bf R}^n)$ with $1<s<\infty, 0<p\leq s$ and $-n<α<n(p-1)$, and $\dot{R}L^{p,s}_{|x|^α}({\bf R}^n) \supset L^s({\bf R}^n)$ when $ -n<α<n(p/s-1)$. We prove the following results. First…
