We prove that the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson Hardy space $H_{n}^{2}$ on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ has no corona in its maximal ideal space, thus generalizing the famous Corona Theorem of L. Carleson to higher dimensions. This result is obtained as a corollary of the Toeplitz corona theorem and a new Banach space result: the Besov-Sobolev space $B_{p}^σ$ has the "baby corona property" for all $σ\geq 0$ and $1<p<\infty $. In addition we obtain infinite generator and semi-infinite matrix versions of these theorems.
We characterize the Carleson measures for the Drury-Arveson Hardy space and other Hilbert spaces of analytic functions of several complex variables. This provides sharp estimates for Drury's generalization of Von Neumann's inequality. The characterization is in terms of a geometric condition, the "split tree condition", which reflects the nonisotropic geometry underlying the Drury-Arveson Hardy space.
This is an extended version of a three part mini course on the Drury-Arveson space given as part of the Focus Program on Analytic Function Spaces and their Applications, hosted by the Fields Institute and held remotely. The Drury-Arveson space, also known as symmetric Fock space, is a natural generalization of the classical Hardy space on the unit disc to the unit ball in higher dimensions. It plays a universal role both in operator theory and in function theory. These notes give an introduction to the Drury-Arveson space. They are not intended to give a comprehensive overview of the entire su…
We exhibit Borel probability measures on the unit sphere in $\mathbb C^d$ for $d \ge 2$ which are Henkin for the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space, but not Henkin in the classical sense. This provides a negative answer to a conjecture of Clouâtre and Davidson.
Let H_n^2 denote the Drury-Arveson Hilbert space on the unit ball B_n in C^n, and let M(H_n^2) be its multiplier algebra. We show that for n>=3, the ring M(H_n^2) is not coherent.
We characterize the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators on the Drury--Arveson space. We show that a function belongs to this common range if and only if its Taylor coefficients satisfy a simple decay condition. To achieve this, we introduce the uniform Smirnov class on the ball and determine its dual space. We show that the dual space of the uniform Smirnov class equals the dual space of the strictly smaller Smirnov class of the Drury-Arveson space, and that this in turn equals the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators.
The maximum selection principle allows to give expansions, in an adaptive way, of functions in the Hardy space $\mathbf H_2$ of the disk in terms of Blaschke products. The expansion is specific to the given function. Blaschke factors and products have counterparts in the unit ball of $\mathbb C^N$, and this fact allows us to extend in the present paper the maximum selection principle to the case of functions in the Drury-Arveson space of functions analytic in the unit ball of $\mathbb C^N$. This will give rise to an algorithm which is a variation in this higher dimensional case of the greedy a…
We consider the closed algebra $\mathcal{A}_d$ generated by the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. We identify $\mathcal{A}_d^*$ as a direct sum of the preduals of the full multiplier algebra and of a commutative von Neumann algebra, and establish analogues of many classical results concerning the dual space of the ball algebra. These developments are deeply intertwined with the problem of peak interpolation for multipliers, and we generalize a theorem of Bishop-Carleson-Rudin to this setting by means of Choquet type integral representations. As a byproduct we shed some light o…
Let $H^2_d$ be the Drury-Arveson space, and let $f\in H^2_d$ have bounded argument and no zeros in $\mathbb{B}_d$. We show that $f$ is cyclic in $H^2_d$ if and only if $\log f$ belongs to the Pick-Smirnov class $N^+(H^2_d)$. Furthermore, for non-vanishing functions $f\in H^2_d$ with bounded argument and $H^\infty$-norm less than 1, cyclicity can also be tested via iterated logarithms. For example, we show that $f$ is cyclic if and only if $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in N^+(H^2_d)$. Thus, a sufficient condition for cyclicity is that $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in H^2_d$. More generally, our results hold for al…
In this work we study what we call Siegel--dissipative vector of commuting operators $(A_1,\ldots, A_{d+1})$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and we obtain a von Neumann type inequality which involves the Drury--Arveson space $DA$ on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathcal U$. The operator $A_{d+1}$ is allowed to be unbounded and it is the infinitesimal generator of a contraction semigroup $\{e^{-iτA_{d+1}}\}_{τ<0}$. We then study the operator $e^{-iτA_{d+1}}A^α$ where $A^α=A_1^{α_1}\cdots A^{α_d}_d$ for $α\in\mathbb N^d_0$ and prove that can be studied by means of model operators on a weighted $…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a space of analytic functions on the unit ball $\mathbb B_d$ in $\mathbb C^d$ with multiplier algebra $\mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})$. A function $f\in \mathcal{H}$ is called cyclic if the set $[f]$, the closure of $\{φf:φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})\}$, equals $\mathcal{H}$. For multipliers we also consider a weakened form of the cyclicity concept. Namely for $n\in \mathbb N_0$ we consider the classes $$\mathcal{C}_n(\mathcal{H})=\{φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal H):φ\ne 0, [φ^n]=[φ^{n+1}]\}.$$ Many of our results hold for $N$:th order radially weighted Besov spaces on $\mathb…
Multipliers of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be characterized in terms of positivity of $n \times n$ matrices analogous to the classical Pick matrix. We study for which reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces it suffices to consider matrices of bounded size $n$. We connect this problem to the notion of subhomogeneity of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. Our main results show that multiplier algebras of many Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, such as the Dirichlet space and the Drury-Arveson space, are not subhomogeneous, and hence one has to test Pick matrices of arbitrarily large matrix…
The main objects under study are quotients of multiplier algebras of certain complete Nevanlinna--Pick spaces, examples of which include the Drury--Arveson space on the ball and the Dirichlet space on the disc. We are particularly interested in the non-commutative Choquet boundaries for these quotients. Arveson's notion of hyperrigidity is shown to be detectable through the essential normality of some natural multiplication operators, thus extending previously known results on the Arveson--Douglas conjecture. We also highlight how the non-commutative Choquet boundaries of these quotients are i…
The classical Dirichlet space is a complete Pick space, hence by a theorem of Agler and McCarthy, there exists an embedding $b$ of the unit disc into a $d$-dimensional ball such that composition with $b$ realizes the Dirichlet space as a quotient of the Drury-Arveson space. We show that $d =\infty$ is necessary, even if we only demand that composition with $b$ induces a surjective map between the multiplier algebras.
We study the ideals of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. Structural results are obtained by investigating the relation between an ideal and its weak-$*$ closure, much in the spirit of the corresponding classical facts for the disc algebra. Zero sets for multipliers are also considered and are deeply intertwined with the structure of ideals. Our approach is primarily based on duality arguments.
This paper concerns a commutant lifting theorem and a Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation result in the setting of multipliers from vector-valued Drury-Arveson space to a large class of vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The special case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces includes all natural examples of Hilbert spaces like Hardy space, Bergman space and weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball.
We introduce the notion of characteristic functions for commuting tuples of hypercontractions on Hilbert spaces, as a generalization of the notion of Sz.-Nagy and Foias characteristic functions of contractions. We present an explicit method to compute characteristic functions of hypercontractions and relate characteristic functions by means of the factors of Schur-Agler class of functions and universal multipliers on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We also offer some factorization properties of multipliers. Characteristic functions of hypercontrctions are complete unitary invariant. The Drury…
We show that the asymptotic behavior of the partial sums of a sequence of positive numbers determine the local behavior of the Hilbert space of Dirichlet series defined using these as weights. This extends results recently obtained describing the local behavior of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients in terms of local integrability, boundary behavior, Carleson measures and interpolating sequences. As these spaces can be identified with functions spaces on the infinite-dimensional polydisk, this gives new results on the Dirichlet and Bergman spaces on the infinite dimensional poly…
We study the multiplier algebras $A(\mathcal{H})$ obtained as the closure of the polynomials on certain reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ on the ball $\mathbb{B}_d$ of $\mathbb{C}^d$. Our results apply, in particular, to the Drury-Arveson space, the Dirichlet space and the Hardy space on the ball. We first obtain a complete description of the dual and second dual spaces of $A(\mathcal H)$ in terms of the complementary bands of Henkin and totally singular measures for $\operatorname{Mult}(\mathcal{H})$. This is applied to obtain several definitive results in interpolation. In part…
Every multiplier algebra of an irreducible complete Pick kernel arises as the restriction algebra $\mv = \{f\big|_V : f \in \cM_d\}$, where $d$ is some integer or $\infty$, $\cM_d$ is the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space $H^2_d$, and $V$ is a subvariety of the unit ball. For finite $d$ it is known that, under mild assumptions, every isomorphism between two such algebras $\mv$ and $\mw$ is induced by a biholomorphism between $W$ and $V$. In this paper we consider the converse, and obtain positive results in two directions. The first deals with the case where $V$ is the proper image…
There has been a great deal of work done in recent years on weighted Bergman spaces $\apa$ on the unit ball $\bn$ of $\cn$, where $0<p<\infty$ and $α>-1$. We extend this study in a very natural way to the case where $α$ is {\em any} real number and $0<p\le\infty$. This unified treatment covers all classical Bergman spaces, Besov spaces, Lipschitz spaces, the Bloch space, the Hardy space $H^2$, and the so-called Arveson space. Some of our results about integral representations, complex interpolation, coefficient multipliers, and Carleson measures are new even for the ordinary (unweighted) Bergm…
In this paper we study spaces of holomorphic functions on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathcal U$ and prove Paley-Wiener type theorems for such spaces. The boundary of $\mathcal U$ can be identified with the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H_n$. Using the group Fourier transform on $\mathbb H_n$, Ogden-Vagi proved a Paley-Wiener theorem for the Hardy space $H^2(\mathcal U)$. We consider a scale of Hilbert spaces on $\mathcal U$ that includes the Hardy space, the weighted Bergman spaces, the weighted Dirichlet spaces, and in particular the Drury-Arveson space, and the Dirichlet space $\mathcal D$. F…
This paper is a follow-up contribution to our work [20] where we discussed some invariant subspace results for contractions on Hilbert spaces. Here we extend the results of [20] to the context of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. Let T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n) be a pure commuting co-spherically contractive n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} and \mathcal{S} be a non-trivial closed subspace of \mathcal{H}. One of our main results states that: \mathcal{S} is a joint T-invariant subspace if and only if there exists a partially isometric operator Π\in \mathcal{B}(…
A contraction $T$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be pure if the sequence $\lbrace T^{*n} \rbrace_{n}$ converges to $0$ in the strong operator topology. In this article, we prove that for contractions $T$, which commute with certain tractable tuples of commuting operators $X = (X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$, the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T$ is a pure contraction on $\mathcal{H}$, (ii) the compression $P_{\mathcal{W}(X)}T|_{\mathcal{W}(X)}$ is a pure contraction, where $\mathcal{W}(X)$ is the wandering subspace corresponding to the tuple $X$. An operator-valued m…
