Majorana modes can arise as zero energy bound states in a variety of solid state systems. A two-dimensional phase supporting these quasiparticles, for instance, emerges on the surface of a topological superconductor with the zero modes localized at the cores of vortices. At low energies, such a setup can be modeled by Majorana modes that interact with each other on the Abrikosov lattice. In experiments, the lattice is usually triangular. Motivated by the practical relevance, we explore the phase diagram of this Hubbard-like Majorana model using a combination of mean field theory and numerical simulation of thin torus geometries through the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. Our analysis indicates that attractive interactions between Majoranas can drive a phase transition in an otherwise gapped topological state.

In this study, the problem of strong Coulomb interactions in topological superconducting wire is analyzed by means of the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) approach. To analyze properties of edge states in the BDI-class structure a quantity called Majorana polarization is used. From its dependence on wire length and an entanglement-spectrum degeneracy topological phase diagrams are obtained. The DMRG calculations for the Shubin-Vonsovsky-type model of the wire show the transformation of phases with Majorana single and double modes (MSMs and MDMs, respectively) under the increase of o…
We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in the presence of nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic couplings. Motivated by recent findings from density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) claiming the existence of a gapped spin liquid with signatures of spontaneously broken lattice point group symmetry [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403 (2015)], we employ the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) approach to analyze the model from an alternative perspective that cons…
We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dir…
We investigate the effect of dimensional crossover in the ground state of the antiferromagnetic spin-$1$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice that interpolates between the regime of weakly coupled Haldane chains ($J^{\prime}\! \!\ll\!\! J$) and the isotropic triangular lattice ($J^{\prime}\!\!=\!\!J$). We use the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and Schwinger boson theory performed at the Gaussian correction level above the saddle-point solution. Our DMRG results show an abrupt transition between decoupled spin chains and the spirally ordered regime at $(J^{\prime}…

Models of interacting Majorana modes may be realized in vortex lattices in superconducting films in contact with topological insulators and may be tuned to the strong-interaction regime by adjusting the chemical potential. Extending the results on one- and two-dimensional Majorana-Hubbard models, here we determine the phase diagrams of two- and four-leg ladders using both field theory and the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods.
The Hubbard chain and spinless fermion chain are paradigms of strongly correlated systems, very well understood using Bethe ansatz, Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and field theory/renormalization group (RG) methods. They have been applied to one-dimensional materials and have provided important insights for understanding higher dimensional cases. Recently, a new interacting fermion model has been introduced, with possible applications to topological materials. It has a single Majorana fermion operator on each lattice site and interactions with the shortest possible range that invo…
Motivated by multiple possible physical realizations, we study the SU(4) quantum antiferromagnet with a fundamental representation on each site of the triangular lattice. We provide evidence for a gapless liquid ground state of this system with an emergent Fermi surface of fractionalized fermionic partons coupled with a U(1) gauge field. Our conclusions are based on numerical simulations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, which we support with a field theory analysis.
Using a combination of the mean-field Bogoliubov deGennes (BdG) approach and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method, we discover first order topological transitions between topological superconducting and trivial insulating phases in a sawtooth lattice of inter-site attractive fermions. Topological characterization of different phases is achieved in terms of winding numbers, Majorana edge modes and entanglement spectra. By studying the effect of disorder on the first order topological phase transitions, we establish the disorder-induced topological phase coexistence as a mechan…
Using tensor network states to unravel the physics of quantum spin liquids in minimal, yet generic microscopic spin or electronic models remains notoriously challenging. A prominent open question concerns the nature of the insulating ground state of two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard-type models on the triangular lattice in the vicinity of the Mott metal-insulator transition, a regime which can be approximated microscopically by a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model supplemented with additional "ring-exchange" interactions. Using a novel and efficient state preparation technique whereby we initialize f…
We study the effects of Coulomb repulsive interactions on a Majorana Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (MBBH) model. The MBBH model belongs to the class of second--order topological superconductors ($HOTSC_2$), featuring robust Majorana corner modes. We consider an interacting strip of four chains of length $L$ and perform a DMRG numerical analysis based on a tensor--network approach. Study of the nonlocal fermionic correlations and of the degenerate entanglement spectrum indicates that the topological phases are robust in the presence of interactions, even in the strongly interacting regime.
We investigate the quantum phase diagram of t-J model on triangular lattice at 1/2 doping with various lattice sizes by using a combination of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), variational Monte Carlo and quantum field theories. To sharply distinguish different phases, we calculated the symmetry quantum numbers of the ground state wave functions, and the results are further confirmed by studying correlation functions. Our results show there is a first order phase transition from ferromagnetism to d+id superconductivity, with the transition taking place at $J/t=0.4\pm0.2$.
The existence of a gapped chiral spin liquid has been recently suggested in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, by intensive density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations [A. Szasz, J. Motruk, M.P. Zaletel, and J.E. Moore, Phys. Rev. X {\bf 10}, 021042 (2020)]. Here, we report the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo technique based upon Jastrow-Slater wave functions, implemented with backflow correlations. As in DMRG calculations, we consider $N$-leg cylinders. For $N=4$ and in the presence of a next-nearest n…
By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor ($J_1$), second-neighbor ($J_2$), and additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ on the triangular lattice. In the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model with $0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 140403 (2015)] find a p…
We investigate a highly frustrated spin-1 model on the triangular lattice, with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic $S\cdot S$ interactions and nearest-neighbor $(S\cdot S)^2$ interactions. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we find three magnetically ordered phases, namely 120$^\circ$ spiral order, stripe order, and tetrahedral order, as well as two spin nematic phases: ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar. While our data could be consistent with a spin liquid phase between the 120$^\circ$ spiral and antiferroquadrupolar orders, the more lik…
Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice is perhaps the best known example of frustrated magnets, but it orders at low temperatures. Recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations find that next nearest neighbor interaction $J_2$ enhances the frustration and leads to a spin liquid for $J_2/J_1\in (0.08,0.15)$. In addition, DMRG study of a dipolar Heisenberg model with longer range interactions gives evidence for a spin liquid at small dipole titling angle $θ\in[0,10^\circ)$. In both cases, the putative spin liquid region appears to be small. Here, we show t…
The anisotropic-exchange spin-1/2 model on a triangular lattice has been used to describe the rare-earth chalcogenides, which may have exotic ground states. We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the model by using the projected entangled pair state (PEPS) method, and compare it to the classical phase diagram. Besides two stripe-ordered phase, and the 120$^\circ$ state, there is also a multi-\textbf{Q} phase. We identify the multi-\textbf{Q} phase as a $Z_{2}$ vortex state. No quantum spin liquid state is found in the phase diagram, contrary to the previous DMRG calculations.
Majorana zero modes (MZM-s) occurring at the edges of a 1D, p-wave, spinless superconductor, in absence of fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, are quintessential examples of topologically-protected zero-energy modes occurring at the edges of 1D symmetry-protected topological phases. In this work, we numerically investigate the fate of the topological phase in the presence of phase-fluctuations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. To that end, we consider a one-dimensional array of MZM-s on mesoscopic superconducting islands at zero temp…
In a recent study [Phys. Rev. X 10, 021042 (2020)], we showed using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations on infinite cylinders that the triangular lattice Hubbard model has a chiral spin liquid phase. In this work, we introduce hopping anisotropy in the model, making one of the three distinct bonds on the lattice stronger or weaker compared with the other two. We implement the anisotropy in two inequivalent ways, one which respects the mirror symmetry of the cylinder and one which breaks this symmetry. In the full range of anisotropy, from the square lattice to w…
The study of quantum frustrated systems remains one of the most challenging subjects of quantum magnetism, as they can hold quantum spin liquids, whose characterization is quite elusive. The presence of gapped quantum spin liquids possessing long range entanglement while being locally indistinguishable often demand highly sophisticated numerical approaches for their description. Here we propose an easy computational method based on exact diagonalization with engineered boundary conditions in very small plaquettes. We apply the method to study the quantum phase diagram of diverse antiferromagne…
Motivated by Mo$_3$S$_7$(dmit)$_3$, we investigate the Hubbard model on the triangular necklace lattice at two-thirds filling. We show, using second order perturbation theory, that in the molecular limit, the ground state and the low energy excitations of this model are identical to those of the spin-one Heisenberg chain. The latter model is known to be in the symmetry protected topological Haldane phase. Away from this limit we show, on the basis of symmetry arguments and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, that the low-energy physics of the Hubbard model on the triangul…
We discuss a scheme for performing Jordan-Wigner transformation for various lattice fermion systems in two and three dimensions which keeps internal and spatial symmetries manifest. The correspondence between fermionic and bosonic operators is established with the help of auxiliary Majorana fermions. The current construction is applicable to general lattices with even coordination number and an arbitrary number of fermion flavors. The approach is demonstrated on the single-orbital square, triangular and cubic lattices for spin-1/2 fermions. We also discuss the relation to some quantum spin liq…
We present new numerical tools to analyze symmetry-broken phases in the context of $SU(2)$-symmetric translation-invariant matrix product states (MPS) and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods for infinite cylinders, and determine the phase diagram of the geometrically-frustrated triangular Heisenberg model with nearest and next-nearest neighbor (NN and NNN) interactions. The appearance of Nambu-Goldstone modes in the excitation spectrum is characterized by "tower of states" levels in the momentum-resolved entanglement spectrum. Symmetry-breaking phase transitions are detected by…
We investigate the evolution of the Mott insulators in the triangular lattice Hubbard Model, as a function of hole doping $δ$ in both the strong and intermediate coupling limits. Using the advanced density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, at light hole doping $δ\lesssim 10\%$, we find a significant difference between strong and intermediate couplings. Notably, at intermediate coupling an unusual metallic state emerges, with short ranged spin correlations but long ranged spin-chirality order. Moreover, no clear Fermi surface or wave-vector is observed, this chiral metal also exhibits…
In systems with many local degrees of freedom, high-symmetry points in the phase diagram can provide an important starting point for the investigation of their properties throughout the phase diagram. In systems with both spin and orbital (or valley) degrees of freedom such a starting point gives rise to SU(4)-symmetric models. Here we consider SU(4)-symmetric "spin" models, corresponding to Mott phases at half-filling, i.e. the six-dimensional representation of SU(4). This may be relevant to twisted multilayer graphene. In particular, we study the SU(4) antiferromagnetic "Heisenberg" model on…
We re-examine the zero temperature phase diagram of the two-leg Hubbard ladder in the small $U$ limit, both analytically and using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We find a ubiquitous Luther-Emery phase, but with a crossover in behavior at a characteristic interaction strength, $U^\star$; for $U \gtrsim U^\star$, there is a single emergent correlation length $\log[ξ] \sim 1/U$, characterizing the gapped modes of the system, but for $U\lesssim U^\star$ there is a hierarchy of length scales, differing parametrically in powers of $U$, reflecting a two-step renormalization group flow …
We model the newly predicted high-$T_c$ superconducting candidates constructed by corner-shared trigonal bipyramidal complexes with an effective three-orbital tight-banding Hamiltonian and investigate the pairing symmetry of their superconducting states driven by electron-electron interactions. Our combined weak and strong coupling based calculations consistently identify the chiral $d+id$ superconductivity as the leading pairing symmetry in a wide doping range with realistic interaction parameters. This pairing state has nontrivial topological Chern-number and can host gapless chiral edge mod…

Dimer models have long been a fruitful playground for understanding topological physics. Here we introduce a new class - termed Majorana-dimer models - wherein bosonic dimers are decorated with pairs of Majorana modes. We find that the simplest examples of such systems realize an intriguing, intrinsically fermionic phase of matter that can be viewed as the product of a chiral Ising theory, which hosts deconfined non-Abelian quasiparticles, and a topological $p_x - ip_y$ superconductor. While the bulk anyons are described by a single copy of the Ising theory, the edge remains fully gapped. Cons…
It is well known that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases host non-trivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite symmetry action. This raises the question: can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of 2+1D fermion SPTs. We focus o…
