Realizations of Majorana fermions in solid state materials have attracted great interests recently in connection to topological order and quantum information processing. We propose a novel way to create Majorana fermions in superconductors. We show that an incipient non-collinear magnetic order turns a spin-singlet superconductor with nodes into a topological superconductor with a stable Majorana bound state in the vortex core; at a topologically-stable magnetic point defect; and on the edge. We argue that such an exotic non-Abelian phase can be realized in extended t-J models on the triangular and square lattices. It is promising to search for Majorana fermions in correlated electron materials where nodal superconductivity and magnetism are two common caricatures.
We establish a condition for the perturbative stability of zero energy nodal points in the quasi-particle spectrum of superconductors in the presence of coexisting \textit{commensurate} orders. The nodes are found to be stable if the Hamiltonian is invariant under time reversal followed by a lattice translation. The principle is demonstrated with a few examples. Some experimental implications of various types of assumed order are discussed in the context of the cuprate superconductors.
We point out that unidirectional bond-centered charge-density-wave states in cuprates involve electronic order in both s- and d-wave channels, with non-local Coulomb repulsion suppressing the s-wave component. The resulting bond-charge-density wave, coexisting with superconductivity, is compatible with recent photoemission and tunneling data and as well as neutron-scattering measurements, once long-range order is destroyed by slow fluctuations or glassy disorder. In particular, the real-space structure of d-wave stripes is consistent with the scanning-tunneling-microscopy measurements on both …
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy is used to investigate the magnetic state of the Fe monolayer on Re(0001). Two coexisting atomic-scale non-collinear spin textures are observed with a sharp transition between them on the order of one atomic lattice spacing. A strict position correlation between the two spin states is observed both in experiments and in Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating their strong coupling behavior.
We use novel STM techniques in concert to study the doping dependence of electronic structure in Bi-2212. At all dopings, the low energy states are relatively homogenous except for dispersive density-of-states modulations whose properties are used to elucidate the momentum-space characteristics of quasi-particles. The superconductive coherence-peaks, ubiquitous in near-optimal tunneling spectra, are destroyed with strong underdoping. A new spectral type, likely characteristic of the zero temperature pseudogap regime, appears in these samples. Exclusively in regions exhibiting this new spectrum…
We study the nontrivial linear magnon band crossings in the collinear antiferromagnets on the two-dimensional (2D) CaVO lattice, also realized in some iron-based superconductors such as AFe$_{1.6+x}$Se$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs). It is shown that the combination of space-inversion and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry) leads to doubly-degenerate eight magnon branches, which cross each other linearly along a one-dimensional loop in the 2D Brillouin zone. We show that the Dirac nodal loops (DNLs) are not present in the collinear ferromagnet on this lattice. Thus, the current 2D antiferrom…
We propose the existence of a symmetry-protected topological Dirac nodal line (DNL) magnonic phase in layered honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets even in the presence of spin-orbit Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show that the magnon spin Nernst effect, predicted to occur in strictly two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets cancels out in the layered honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets. In other words, the magnon spin Nernst effect in each 2D antiferromagnetic layer cancels out the succeeding layer. Hence, the Berry curvature vanish in the entire Brillouin zone due to …
Competing unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetism widely exist in several strongly correlated quantum materials whose direct simulation generally suffers from fermion sign problem. Here we report unbiased Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations on a sign-problem-free repulsive toy model with same onsite symmetries as the standard Hubbard model on a 2D square lattice. Using QMC, supplemented with mean-field and continuum field-theory arguments, we find that it hosts three distinct phases: a nodal d-wave phase, an antiferromagnet, and an intervening phase which hosts coexisting ant…
We report field-orientation specific heat studies of the pressure-induced heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn5. Theses experiments provide the momentum-dependent superconducting gap function for the first time in any pressure-induced superconductor. In the coexisting phase of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, field rotation within the Ce-In plane reveals four-fold modulation in the density of states, which favors a d-wave order parameter and constrains a theory of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism.
We resolve an existing controversy between, on the one hand, convincing evidence for the existence of competing order in underdoped cuprates, and, on the other hand, spectroscopic data consistent with a seemingly homogeneous d-wave superconductor in the very same compounds. Specifically, we show how short-range fluctuations of the competing order essentially restore the nodal d-wave spectrum from the qualitatively distinct folded dispersion resulting from homogeneous coexisting phases. The signatures of the fluctuating competing order can be found mainly in a splitting of the antinodal quasi-p…
Frustrated magnetic interactions in a quasi-two-dimensional [111] slab of pyrochlore lattice were studied. For uniform nearest neighbor (NN) interactions, we show that the complex magnetic problem can be mapped onto a model with two independent degrees of freedom, tri-color and binary sign. This provides a systematic way to construct the complex classical spin ground states with collinear and coplanar bi-pyramid spins. We also identify `partial but extended' zero-energy excitations amongst the ground states. For nonuniform NN interactions, the coplanar ground state can be obtained from the col…
We generalize the concept of triply-degenerate nodal points to non-collinear antiferromagnets. Here, we introduce this concept to insulating quantum antiferromagnets on the decorated honeycomb lattice, with spin-$1$ bosonic quasiparticle excitations known as magnons. We demonstrate the existence of magnonic surface states with constant energy contours that form pairs of magnonic arcs connecting the surface projection of the magnonic triple nodal points. The quasiparticle excitations near the triple nodal points represent three-component bosons beyond that of magnonic Dirac, Weyl, and nodal-lin…
We generalize the theory of Cooper pairing by spin excitations in the metallic antiferromagnetic state to include situations with electron and/or hole pockets. We show that Cooper pairing arises from transverse spin waves and from gapped longitudinal spin fluctuations of comparable strength. However, each of these interactions, projected on a particular symmetry of the superconducting gap, acts primarily within one type of pocket. We find a nodeless $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave state is supported primarily by the longitudinal fluctuations on the electron pockets, and both transverse and longitudinal flu…
We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in three-dimensional antiferromagnets, where the ground state configuration is invariant under time-reversal followed by space-inversion ($PT$-symmetry). We prove that Dirac points and nodal lines, the former being the limiting case of the latter, are the generic forms of symmetry-protected band crossings between magnon branches. As a concrete example, we study a Heisenberg spin model for a "spin-web" compound, Cu$_3$TeO$_6$, and show the presence of the magnon Dirac points assuming a collinear magnetic structure. Upon turning on symmet…
Relationship between the superconducting gap and the pseudogap has been the subject of controversies. In order to clarify this issue, we have studied the superconducting gap and pseudogap of the high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.14) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Through the analysis of the ARPES spectra above and below Tc, we have identified a superconducting coherence peak even in the anti-nodal region on top of the pseudogap of a larger energy scale. The superconducting peak energy nearly follows the pure d-wave form. The d-wave order parameter Δ_0 [defin…
Nodal loop semimetals are close descendants of Weyl semimetals and possess a topologically dressed band structure. We argue by combining the conventional theory of magnetic oscillation with topological arguments that nodal loop semimetals host coexisting topological and trivial magnetic oscillations. These originate from mapping the topological properties of the extremal Fermi surface cross sections onto the physics of two dimensional semi Dirac systems, stemming from merging two massless Dirac cones. By tuning the chemical potential and the direction of magnetic field, a sharp transition is i…
Motivated by the recent discovery of noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as $CePt_{3}Si$, $CeRhSi_{3}$ and $CeIrSi_{3}$, we investigate theoretically the impurity resonance states with coexisting $s$- and p-wave pairing symmetries. Due to the nodal structure of the gap function, we find single nonmagnetic impurity-induced resonances appearing in the local density of state (LDOS). In particular, we analyze the evolution of the local density of states for coexisting isotropic s-wave and p-wave superconducting states and compare with that of anisotropic s-wave and p-wave symmetries of the su…
We propose a route to achieve odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity in metallic collinear antiferromagnets with inversion symmetry. Owing to the existence of hidden antiunitary symmetry, which we call the effective time-reversal symmetry (eTRS), the Fermi surfaces of ordinary antiferromagnetic metals are generally spin-degenerate, and spin-singlet pairing is favored. However, by introducing a local inversion symmetry breaking perturbation that also breaks the eTRS, we can lift the degeneracy to obtain spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. In the weak-coupling limit, the spin-polarized Fermi surfa…
We study a two-dimensional (2D) spin-half Heisenberg model related to the quasi 2D antiferromagnets (Ba,Sr)2Cu3O4Cl2 by means of exact diagonalization and spin-wave theory. The model consists of two inequivalent interpenetrating square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets A and B. While the antiferromagnetic interaction JAA within the A subsystem is strong the coupling JBB within the B subsystem is much weaker. The coupling JAB between A and B subsystems is competing giving rise for interesting frustration effects. In dependence of the strength of JAB we find a collinear Neel phase, non-colline…
Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realization of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dira…
We study the interplay of nematic and superconducting order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model and show that they can coexist, especially when superconductivity is not the energetically dominant phase. Due to a breaking of the $C_4$ symmetry, the coexisting phase inherently contains admixture of the $s$-wave pairing components. As a result, the superconducting gap exhibits very non-standard features including changed nodal directions. Our results also show that in the optimally doped regime the superconducting phase is typically unstable towards developing nematicity (breaking of the $C_4$ s…
We present variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results for the Gutzwiller-projected coexisting state including both antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and superconducting (SC) order in the two-dimensional t-t'-t"-J model. By further considering off-site spin correlation between electrons, in contrast to earlier VMC results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 027002 (2009)], we find the apparent competition between AFM order and SC order near the underdoped regime instead of coexistence. The local ferromagnetic correlation introduced by spin-spin Jastrow correlators seem to be responsible for the disappearance of the …
Thermal conductivity and specific heat were measured in the superconducting state of the heavy fermion material Ce_{1-x}La_{x}CoIn_{5}. With increasing impurity concentration x, the suppression of T_{c} is accompanied by the increase in the residual electronic specific heat expected of a d-wave superconductor, but it occurs in parallel with a decrease in residual electronic thermal conductivity. This contrasting behavior reveals the presence of uncondensed electrons coexisting with nodal quasiparticles. An extreme multiband scenario is proposed, with a d-wave superconducting gap on the heavy-e…
Second-order topological semimetals (SOTSMs) are featured with hinge Fermi arcs. How to generate them in different systems has attracted much attention. We propose a scheme to create exotic SOTSMs by periodic driving. Novel Dirac SOTSMs, with a widely tunable number of nodes and hinge Fermi arcs, the adjacent nodes having the same chirality, and the coexisting nodal points and loops, are generated at ease by the periodic driving. When the time-reversal symmetry is broken, our scheme permits us to realize hybrid-order Weyl semimetals with the coexisting hinge and surface Fermi arcs. Our Weyl se…
The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$)$_4$As$_4$ with superconductivity coexisting with a non-collinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even $L$ symmetries due to the bilayer cou…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, combined with a topological analysis, we have investigated the electronic properties of $Cd_3As_2$ and $Na_3Bi$ Dirac topological semimetals doped with non-magnetic and magnetic impurities. Our systematic analysis shows that the selective breaking of the inversion, rotational and time-reversal symmetry, controlled by specific choices of the impurity doping, induces phase transitions from the original Dirac semimetal to a variety of topological phases such as, topological insulator, trivial semimetal, non-magnetic and magnetic Weyl …
Pursuing fractionalized particles that do not bear properties of conventional measurable objects, exemplified by bare particles in the vacuum such as electrons and elementary excitations such as magnons, is a challenge in physics. Here we show that a machine-learning method for quantum many-body systems that has achieved state-of-the-art accuracy reveals the existence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase in the region $0.49\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim0.54$ convincingly in spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model with the nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchanges, $J_1$ and $J_2$, respectively, on th…
Effects of perturbations on topologically ordered (TO) states with fractionalized excitations is very intriguing. While small perturbations are not expected to affect a robust TO, sizable perturbations must lead to onset of novel routes to order(s). Observability of such emergent orders in real condensed matter systems continues to be an open issue of paramount interest. Here, we detail how a featureless Kitaev spin liquid with rigorous TO gives way to partial topological ordered state(s) coexisting with a wide staircase of novel `excitonic' orders of fractionalized entities in a Zeeman field.…
Higher-order topological phases feature topologically protected boundary states in lower dimensions. Specifically, the zero-dimensional corner states are protected by the $d$th-order topology of a $d$-dimension system. In this work, we propose to predict different configurations of corner states from winding numbers defined for one-dimensional edges of the system. We first demonstrate the winding number characterization with a generalized two-dimensional square lattice belonging to the BDI symmetry class. In addition to the second-order topological insulating phase, the system may also be a no…
We examine the presence and evolution of magnetic Dirac nodes in the Heisenberg honeycomb lattice. Using linear spin theory, we evaluate the collinear phase diagram as well as the change in the spin dynamics with various exchange interactions. We show that the ferromagnetic structure produces bosonic Dirac and Weyl points due to the competition between superexchange interactions. Furthermore, it is shown that the criteria for magnetic Dirac nodes are coupled to the magnetic structure and not the overall crystal symmetry, where the breaking of inversion symmetry greatly affects the antiferromag…
Fe$_{1+x}$Te is a two dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet that becomes superconducting on anion substitution on the Te site. The parent phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te is sensitive to the amount of interstitial iron situated between the iron-tellurium layers displaying collinear magnetic order coexisting with low temperature metallic resistivity for small concentrations of interstitial iron $x$ and helical magnetic order for large values of $x$. While this phase diagram has been established through scattering [see for example E. E. Rodriguez $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. B ${\bf{84}}$, 064403 (2011…
We study electronic structure of hole- and electron-doped Mott insulators in the two-dimensional Hubbard model to reach a unified picture for the normal state of cuprate high-Tc superconductors. By using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate that structure of coexisting zeros and poles of the single-particle Green's function holds the key to understand Mott physics in the underdoped region. We show evidence for the emergence of non-Fermi-liquid phase caused by the topological quantum phase transition of Fermi surface by analyzing low-energy charge dynamics. The…
We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals, subject to magnetic fields applied along the crystallographic [110] direction, reveal unconventional low energy states. Er$^{3+}$ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excit…

Weyl nodes have been experimentally realized in photonic, electronic, and phononic crystals. However, magnonic Weyl nodes are yet to be seen experimentally. In this paper, we propose Weyl magnon nodes in noncoplanar stacked frustrated kagome antiferromagnets, naturally available in various real materials. Most crucially, the Weyl nodes in the current system occur at the lowest excitation and possess a topological (anomalous) thermal Hall effect, therefore they are experimentally accessible at low temperatures due to the population effect of bosonic quasiparticles. In stark contrast to other ma…
Recently topological aspects of magnon band structure have attracted much interest, and especially, the Dirac magnons in Cu3TeO6 have been observed experimentally. In this work, we calculate the magnetic exchange interactions J's using the first-principles linear-response approach and find that these J's are short-range and negligible for the Cu-Cu atomic pair apart by longer than 7 Angstrom. Moreover there are only 5 sizable magnetic exchange interactions, and according to their signs and strengths, modest magnetic frustration is expected. Based on the obtained magnetic exchange couplings, we…
