Motivated by the recent discovery of noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as $CePt_{3}Si$, $CeRhSi_{3}$ and $CeIrSi_{3}$, we investigate theoretically the impurity resonance states with coexisting $s$- and p-wave pairing symmetries. Due to the nodal structure of the gap function, we find single nonmagnetic impurity-induced resonances appearing in the local density of state (LDOS). In particular, we analyze the evolution of the local density of states for coexisting isotropic s-wave and p-wave superconducting states and compare with that of anisotropic s-wave and p-wave symmetries of the superconducting gap. Our results show that the scanning tunneling microscopy can shed light on the particular structure of the superconducting gap in non-centrosymmetric superconductors.
We have studied the effect of Ge substitution and pressure on the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si. Ge substitution on the Si site acts as negative chemical pressure leading to an increase in the unit-cell volume but also introduces chemical disorder. We carried out electrical resistivity and ac heat-capacity experiments under hydrostatic pressure on CePt3Si1-xGex (x=0, 0.06). Our experiments show that the suppression of superconductivity in CePt3Si1-xGex is mainly caused by the scattering potential, rather than volume expansion, introduced by the Ge dopants. The antiferromagnetic order is…
The low-energy magnetic excitations of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si have been measured with inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Kondo-type spin fluctuations with an anisotropic wave vector dependence are observed in the paramagnetic state. These fluctuations do not survive in the antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN=2.2 K but are replaced by damped spin waves, whose dispersion is much stronger along the c-axis than in other directions. No change is observed in the excitation spectrum or the magnetic order as the system enters the superconduc…
The superconducting gap structure of recently discovered heavy fermion CePt_3Si without spatial inversion symmetry was investigated by thermal transport measurements down to 40 mK. In zero field a residual T-linear term was clearly resolved as T-> 0, with a magnitude in good agreement with the value expected for a residual normal fluid with a nodal gap structure, together with a T^2-dependence at high temperatures. With an applied magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity grows rapidly, in dramatic contrast to fully gapped superconductors, and exhibits one-parameter scaling with T/sqrt{H}. The…
We report ac susceptibility measurements of polycrystalline CePt_3Si down to 60 mK and in applied fields up to 9 T. In zero field, a full Meissner state emerges at temperatures T/Tc < 0.3, where Tc=0.65 K is the onset transition temperature. Though transport measurements show a relatively high upper critical field Bc2 ~ 4-5 T, the low temperature susceptibility, χ', is quite fragile to applied field, with χ' diminishing rapidly in fields of a few kG. Interestingly, the field dependence of χ' is well described by the power law, 4πχ'=(B/B_c)^{1/2}, where Bc is the field at which the onset of res…
We report on novel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si through measurements of the 195Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1. In the normal state, the temperature (T) dependence of 1/T1 unraveled the existence of low-lying levels in crystal-electric-field multiplets and the formation of a heavy fermion (HF) state. The coexistence of AFM and SC phases, that emerge at TN = 2.2 K and Tc = 0.75 K, respectively, takes place on a microscopic level. CePt3Si is the first HF superconductor that reveals a peak in 1/T1 just below Tc and, additi…
We report the measurements of the $^{29}$Si Knight shift $^{29}K$ on the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion compound CePt$_{3}$Si in which antiferromagnetism (AFM) with $T_{\rm N}=2.2$ K coexists with superconductivity (SC) with $T_{c}=0.75$ K. Its spin part $^{29}K_{\rm s}$, which is deduced to be $K_{\rm s}^{c}\ge 0.11$ and 0.16% at respective magnetic fields $H=2.0061$ and 0.8671 T, does not decrease across the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ for the field along the c-axis. The temperature dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation of $^{195}$Pt below $T_{c}$ has been accoun…
Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is employed to study damped spin-wave excitations in the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin-zone boundary in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state. Measurements along the (1/2 1/2 L) and (H H 1/2-H) reciprocal-space directions reveal deviations in the spin-wave dispersion from the previously reported model. Broad asymmetric shape of the peaks in energy signifies strong spin-wave damping by interactions with the particle-hole continuum. Their energy width exhibits no evident anomalies as a fun…
We report on measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of a very high quality single crystal of nonmagnetic superconductor LaPt3Si without inversion symmetry. The results are compared with those previously reported for the isostructural antiferromagnetic superconductor CePt3Si. At low temperatures, the penetration depth follows a BCS exponential behavior that implies an isotropic energy gap in LaPt3Si, in contrast to a linear response that indicates line nodes in CePt3Si. These line nodes have been argued to be protected by symmetry or accidentally generated …
We show that the nonuniform state (Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state) of the spin triplet superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric systems is stabilized by antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling even if the magnetic field is absent. The transition temperature of the spin triplet superconductivity is reduced by the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in general. This pair breaking effect is shown to be similar to the Pauli pair breaking effect due to magnetic field for the spin singlet superconductivity, in which FFLO state is stabilized near the Pauli limit (or Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit)…
We report a study in which the effect of defects/impurities, growth process, off-stoichiometry, and presence of impurity phases on the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si is analysed by means of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. We found that the linear low-temperature response of the penetration depth -indicative of line nodes in this material- is robust regarding sample quality, in contrast to what is observed in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes. We discuss evidence that the broadness of the superconducting transi…
When the inversion symmetry is broken, the spin-orbit coupling reduces the transition temperature of some types of spin triplet superconductivity, which is similar to the case that magnetic field reduces the spin singlet superconductivity due to Zeeman splitting. It is well known that Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state of spin singlet superconductivity is realized near the Pauli limit (or Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit) of external magnetic field. In FFLO state the amplitude of the order parameter is not uniform in space. In this paper we study the FFLO state in the spin triplet superc…
For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We calculate the superfluid density tensor in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We demonstrate that such a pairing model accounts for an experimentally observed feature of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in CePt3Si, i.e., line-node-gap behavior at low temperatures.
A new ternary platinum phosphide CePt$_{3}$P was synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. The compound crystallizes in an antiperovskite tetragonal structure similar to that in the canonical family of platinum-based superconductors $A$Pt$_{3}$P ($A$ = Sr, Ca, La) and closely related to the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. In contrast to all the superconducting counterparts, however, no superconductivity is observed in CePt$_{3}$P down to 0.5 K. Instead, CePt$_{3}$P displays a coexistence of antiferromagnetic orde…
We analytically study electronic bound states around a single vortex core in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as ${\rm CePt_3Si}$ without mirror symmetry about the $ab$ plane. Considering a mixed spin-singlet-triplet Cooper pairing model, we obtain a formula about the local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex core in any directions of magnetic fields. The LDOS under a magnetic field perpendicular to the c axis are quite different from those of typical s-wave or d-wave superconductors. From the ellipticity of the spatial pattern of the LDOS around a vortex core, one can estimate ex…
We numerically study the spatially-resolved NMR around a single vortex in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 under the influence of the vortex core states is calculated for an s+p-wave Cooper pairing state. The result is compared with that for an s-wave pairing state.
For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We demonstrate that such a model on a qualitative level accounts for experimentally observed features of the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, namely a peak just below Tc and a line-node gap behavior at low temperatures.
We propose an experimental scheme to detect unambiguously parity-mxing of Cooper pairs in noncentrosymmetric superconductors, which utilizes crossed Andreev reflection processes between two oppositely spin-polarized normal metal leads and a noncentrosymmetric superconductor. It is demonstrated that a non-local conductance exhibits a clear signature of parity breaking of Cooper pairs, and thus, can be a direct probe for the parity-mixing.
We examine intrinsic interfaces separating crystalline twin domains of opposite spin-orbit coupling in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. At these interfaces, low-energy Andreev bound states occur as a consequence of parity-mixed Cooper pairing, and a superconducting phase which violates time reversal symmetry can be realized. This provides an environment allowing flux lines with fractional flux quanta to be formed at the interface. Their presence could have strong implications on the flux creep behavior in such superconductors.
We numerically study the vortex core structure in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si without mirror symmetry about the xy plane. A single vortex along the z axis and a mixed singlet-triplet Cooper pairing model are considered. The spatial profiles of the pair potential, local density of states, supercurrent density, and radially-textured magnetic moment density around the vortex are obtained in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity.
$\rm CePt_3Si$ is a novel heavy fermion superconductor, crystallising in the $\rm CePt_3B$ structure as a tetragonally distorted low symmetry variant of the $\rm AuCu_3$ structure type. $\rm CePt_3Si$ exhibits antiferromagnetic order at $T_N \approx 2.2$ K and enters into a heavy fermion superconducting state at $T_c \approx 0.75$ K. Large values of $H_{c2}' \approx -8.5$ T/K and $H_{c2}(0) \approx 5$ T refer to heavy quasiparticles forming Cooper pairs. Hitherto, $\rm CePt_3Si$ is the first heavy fermion superconductor without a center of symmetry.
A microscopic theory for the spin triplet Cooper pairing in non-centrosymmetric superconductors like CePt_3Si and CeTSi_3 (T=Rh, Ir) is presented. The lack of inversion symmetry leads to new anomalous spin fluctuations which stabilize the triplet part in addition to the singlet part originating from the centrosymmetric spin fluctuations. It is shown that both parts have similar nontrivial momentum dependence of A_1 type. Therefore the mixed singlet-triplet gap function has accidental line nodes on both Fermi surface sheets which are stable as function of temperature. This gap function explains…
We propose that in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with weakly asymmetric spin-orbit interaction the field-induced pair correlation between the spin-orbit split different bands ignored in previous studies yields unique effects; i.e. the Pauli depairing effect is anisotropic in the momentum space, and as a result, magnetic fields induce point-node-like anisotropic gap structure of the quasiparticle energy even for isotropic s-wave states, which seriously affects thermodynamic quantities at low temperatures. Also, it is shown that when the magnitude of the spin-orbit interaction is smaller th…
In noncentrosymmetric metals, the spin degeneracy of the electronic bands is lifted by spin-orbit coupling. We consider general symmetry properties of the pairing function Delta(k) in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with spin-orbit coupling (NSC), including CePt3Si, UIr and Cd2Re2O7. We find that Delta(k) = chi(k) t(k), where chi(k) is an even function which transforms according to the irreducible representations of the crystallographic point group and t(k) is a model dependent phase factor. We consider tunnelling between a NSC and a conventional superconductor. It is found that, in terms o…
The data of temperature dependent superfluid density $n_s(T)$ in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B [Yuan {\it et al.}, \phrl97, 017006 (2006)] show that a sudden change of the slope of $n_s (T)$ occur at slightly lower than the critical temperature. Motivated by this observation, we microscopically derive the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations for noncentrosymmetric superconductors with Rashba type spin orbit interaction. Cooper pairing is assumed to occur between electrons only in the same spin split band and pair scattering is allowed to occur between two spin split bands. The GL theory of such a …
This article is a pedagogical review of theoretical studies of noncentrosymmetric superconductors with particular emphasis on the role played by electron correlation, which is important for heavy fermion systems. We survey unique properties of parity-violated superconductivity such as the admixture of spin singlet and triplet states, unusual paramagnetism, large Pauli limiting fields, magnetoelectric effects, the helical vortex phase, and the anomalous Hall effect. It is pointed out that these remarkable features are strengthened by a strong electron correlation effect, and thus are prominent …
We investigate effects of strong electron correlation on magnetoelectric transport phenomena in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with particular emphasis on its application to the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si. Taking into account electron correlation effects in a formally exact way, we obtain the expression of the magnetoelectric coefficient for the Zeeman-field-induced paramagnetic supercurrent, of which the existence was predicted more than a decade ago. It is found that in contrast to the usual Meissner current, which is much reduced by the mass renormalizat…
We analyze the possible interaction-induced superconducting instabilities in noncentrosymmetric systems based on symmetries of the normal state. It is proven that pure electron-phonon coupling will always lead to a fully gapped superconductor that does not break time-reversal symmetry and is topologically trivial. We show that topologically nontrivial behavior can be induced by magnetic doping without gapping out the resulting Kramers pair of Majorana edge modes. In case of superconductivity arising from the particle-hole fluctuations associated with a competing instability, the properties of …
We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which …
Twin boundaries are generic crystalline defects in noncentrosymmetric crystal structures. We study theoretically twin boundaries in time-reversal symmetric noncentrosymmetric superconductors that admit parity-mixed Cooper pairing. Twin boundaries support spin currents as a consequence of this parity mixing. If the singlet and triplet components of the superconducting order parameter are of comparable magnitude, the superconducting state breaks spontaneously the bulk time-reversal symmetry locally near the twin boundary. By self-consistently evaluating the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations and the…
We present the microscopic Fermi liquid theory for magnetic properties and transport phenomena in interacting electron systems without inversion symmetry both in the normal state and in the superconducting state. Our argument is mainly focused on the application to noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors. The transport coefficients for the anomalous Hall effect, the thermal anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall effect, and magnetoelectric effects, of which the existence is a remarkable feature of parity violation, are obtained by taking into account electron correlation effects in a fo…
Noncentrosymmetric superconductors have sparked significant research interests due to their exciting properties, such as the admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. Here we report $μ$SR and thermodynamic measurements on the noncentrosymmetric superconductor La7Rh3 which indicate a fully established superconducting gap and spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking at the onset of superconductivity. We show that our results pose severe constraints on any microscopic theory of superconductivity in the system. A symmetry analysis identifies ground states compatible with time-rev…
We argue the emergence of nodal excitations due to the coupling with static antiferromagnetic order in fully-gapped superconducting states in both cases with and without inversion symmetry. This line node structure is not accompanied with the sign change of the superconducting gap, in contrast to usual unconventional Cooper pairs with higher angular momenta. In the case without inversion symmetry, the stability of the nodal excitations crucially depends on the direction of the antiferromagnetic staggered magnetic moment. A possible realization of this phenomenon in CePt$_3$Si is discussed.
The unique nonreciprocal responses of superconductors, which stem from the Cooper pairs' quantum condensation, have been attracting attention. Recently, theories of the second-order nonlinear response in noncentrosymmetric superconductors were formulated based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. In this paper, we study the mechanism and condition for second-order optical responses of time-reversal symmetric superconductors. The numerical results show the characteristic photocurrent and second harmonic generation in the superconducting state. However, the superconductivity-induced nonlinear opt…
Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) with a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) -like superconductivity occurs in a small, but growing number of noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials, although the mechanism is poorly understood. We present heat capacity, magnetization, resistivity, and muon spin resonance/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on polycrystalline samples of NCS La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$. Transverse-field $μ$SR and heat capacity data show La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$ is a type-II superconductor with a BCS-like gap structure, while zero-field $μ$SR results provide evidence of TRSB. We discuss the implications of…
The discovery of noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as CePt$_3$Si, and chiral superconductors, such as Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, calls for experimental methods to identify the presence of spin-triplet pairing. We here demonstrate a method which accomplishes this in an appealingly simple manner: a spin-sensitive proximity effect in a ferromagnet$\mid$triplet superconductor bilayer. It is shown how the orientation of the field can be used to unambiguously distinguish between different spin-triplet states. Moreover, the proximity effect becomes long-ranged in spite of the presence of an exchange field…
We report a study of the normal- and superconducting-state electronic properties of the centrosymmetric compound SrPt3P via 31P nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) and magnetometry investigations. Essential features such as a sharp drop of the Knight shift at T < Tc and an exponential decrease of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation ratio 1/(T1T) below Tc are consistent with an s-wave electron pairing in SrPt3P, although a direct confirmation in the form of a Hebel-Slichter-type peak is lacking. Normal-state NMR data at T < 50 K indicate conventional features of the conduction electrons, typical of si…
Inversion and time reversal are essential symmetries for the structure of Cooper pairs in superconductors. The loss of one or both leads to modifications to this structure and can change the properties of the superconducting phases in profound ways. Lacking inversion, superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric materials has become an important topic, in particular, in the context of topological superconductivity as well as unusual magnetic and magneto-electric properties. Recently, crystal structures with local, but not global inversion-symmetry breaking have attracted attention, as superconducti…
The existence of edge states and zero energy modes in vortex cores is a hallmark of topologically nontrivial phases realized in various condensed matter systems such as the fractional quantum Hall states, p+ip superconductors, and Z_2 insulators (quantum spin Hall state). We examine this scenario for two dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductors which allow the parity-mixing of Cooper pairs. It is found that even when the s-wave pairing gap is nonzero, provided that the superconducting gap of spin-triplet pairs is larger than that of spin-singlet pairs, gapless edge states and zero energy…
Superconductivity was first observed more than a century ago, but the search for new superconducting materials remains a challenge. The Cooper pairs in superconductors are ideal embodiments of quantum entanglement. Thus, novel superconductors can be critical for both learning about electronic systems in condensed matter and for possible application in future quantum technologies. Here two previously unreported materials, NbIr$_2$B$_2$ and TaIr$_2$B$_2$, are presented with superconducting transitions at 7.2 and 5.2 K, respectively. They display a unique noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, and…
Antiperovskites are a promising candidate structure for the exploration of new materials. We discovered an antiperovskite phosphide, LaPd$_{3}$P, following our recent synthesis of $A$Pd$_{3}$P ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Ba). While $A$Pd$_{3}$P and (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P were found to be tetragonal or orthorhombic systems, LaPd$_{3}$P is a new prototype cubic system ($a$ = 9.0317(1) A) with a noncentrosymmetric space group ($I-43m$). LaPd$_{3}$P exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) of 0.28 K. The upper critical field, Debye temperature, and Sommerfeld constant ($γ$) were det…
We numerically investigate the electronic structures around a vortex core in a bilayer superconducting system, with s-wave pairing, Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman magnetic field, with use of the quasiclassical Green's function method. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase and the so-called pair-density wave (PDW) phase appear in the temperature-magnetic-field phase diagram in a bulk uniform system [Phys. Rev. B 86, 134514 (2012)]. In the low magnetic field perpendicular to the layers, the zero-energy vortex bound states in the BCS phase are split by the Zeeman magnetic field. On the…
Vortex lattice structures in Rashba noncentrosymmetric superconductors in magnetic fields parallel to the basal plane (${\bf H} \perp c$) are examined based on the BCS-like Hamiltonian and the resulting Ginzburg-Landau functional. Due to the momentum dependent anisotropy of the Zeeman effect induced by the broken inversion symmetry, the vortex lattice in higher fields generally shows some unidirectional modulation of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type orienting in the plane perpendicular to ${\bf H}$. However, the direction of the modulation and the lattice structure depend significa…
We investigate the nature of the time-reversal breaking pairing state in the hole-doped monolayer MoS$_{2}$ on the basis of the realistic three-orbital attractive Hubbard-like model with the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Due to the multi-band features arising from the Mo $d$ orbitals in the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the Lifshitz transition takes place upon hole doping. Across the Lifshitz transition point, the sign of the relative phase between the Cooper-pair components drastically changes, leading to the emergence of the time-reversal breaking phase with complex gap functions. It i…
In materials without an inversion center of symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conducting band is lifted by an antisymmetric spin orbit coupling (ASOC). Under such circumstances, spin and parity cannot be separately used to classify the Cooper pairing states. Consequently, the superconducting order parameter is generally a mixture of spin singlet and triplet pairing states. In this paper we investigate the structure of the order parameter and its response to disorder for the most symmetric pairing state ($A_1$). Using the example of the heavy Fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si, we determine ch…
In the presence of an external magnetic field Cooper pairs in noncentrosymmetric superconductors can acquire finite momentum. Recent theory predicts that such finite-momentum pairing can lead to an asymmetric critical current, where a dissipationless supercurrent can flow along one direction but not the opposite. However, to date this has not been observed. Here we report the discovery of a giant Josephson diode effect (JDE) in Josephson junctions formed from a type II Dirac semimetal, NiTe2. A distinguishing feature is that the asymmetry in the critical current depends sensitively on the magn…
It is shown that interlayer spin-singlet Cooper pairing is induced by magnetic interactions in a metallic antiferromagnet of stacked conductive layers in which each layer is ferromagnetically polarized and they order antiferromagnetically in stacking direction. As a result, the antiferromagnetic long-range order and superconductivity coexist at low temperatures. It is shown that T_AF > T_c except for in a very limited parameter region unless T_AF = 0, where T_AF and T_c denote the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures, respectively. It is found that the exchange field c…
We propose a generic scenario for realizing gapful topological superconductors (TSCs) from gapless spin-singlet superconductors (SCs). Noncentrosymmetric nodal SCs in two dimension are shown to be gapful under a Zeeman field, as a result of the cooperation of inversion-symmetry breaking and time-reversal-symmetry breaking. In particular, non-s-wave SCs acquire a large excitation gap. Such paramagnetically-induced gapful SCs may be classified into TSCs in the symmetry class D specified by the Chern number. We show nontrivial Chern numbers over a wide parameter range for spin-singlet SCs. A vari…
Thin sheets deposited on a substrate and interfaces of correlated materials offer a plethora of routes towards the realization of exotic phases of matter. In these systems, inversion symmetry is broken which strongly affects the properties of possible instabilities -- in particular in the superconducting channel. By combining symmetry and energetic arguments, we derive general and experimentally accessible selection rules for Cooper instabilities in noncentrosymmetric systems which yield necessary and sufficient conditions for spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking at the superconducting …

The magnetopiezoelectric effect (MPE) is a cross-coupling between an electric current and strain in metals with neither inversion symmetry nor time-reversal symmetry. Unlike the conventional piezoelectric effect, the MPE allows a piezoelectric response in superconductors, as we call the superconducting piezoelectric effect (SCPE). The SCPE may enable a piezoelectric response without Joule heating and provide a probe of exotic superconducting symmetry. In this paper, we propose a formulation of the SCPE and calculate both the MPE and SCPE in the two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric s-wave superco…
