We describe a new class of spin liquids with global SU(2) spin rotation symmetry in spin 1/2 systems on the triangular lattice, which have real Majorana fermion excitations carrying spin S = 1. The simplest translationally-invariant mean-field state on the triangular lattice breaks time-reversal symmetry and is stable to fluctuations. It generically possesses gapless excitations along 3 Fermi lines in the Brillouin zone. These intersect at a single point where the excitations scale with a dynamic exponent z = 3. An external magnetic field has no orbital coupling to the SU(2) spin rotation-invariant fermion bilinears that can give rise to a transverse thermal conductivity, thus leading to the absence of a thermal Hall effect. The Zeeman coupling is found to gap out two-thirds of the z = 3 excitations near the intersection point and this leads to a suppression of the low temperature specific heat, the spin susceptibility and the Wilson ratio. We also compute physical properties in the presence of weak disorder and discuss possible connections to recent experiments on organic insulators.
The correlations in charge transport in multiple Majorana fermions systems contain much richer physics and carry more information than the conventional transport coefficients. We calculate the auto- and cross-correlations in the spinful topological Kondo model and point out the frequencies dependencies of the correlations that may serve as a proof of the existence of the Majorana fermions in our system, particularly the change of the cross-correlation from positive to negative at higher frequency.
We show the presence of Majorana edge modes in an interacting fermionic ladder with spin in a number conserved setting. The interchain single particle hopping is suppressed and only a pair hopping is present between the different chains of the ladder. Additionally, the hopping along the chains is spin imbalanced and a transverse magnetic field is applied breaking time-reversal invariance. We study the robustness of the topological phase with respect to an on-site interaction between the spin-up and spin-down fermions and the spin dependent imbalance of the hopping. The main result of the prese…

The role of the multiorbital effects on the emergence of frustrated electronic orders on the triangular lattice at half filling is investigated through an extended spinless fermion Hubbard model. By using two complementary approaches, unrestricted Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalizations, we unravel a very rich phase diagram controlled by the strength of both local and off-site Coulomb interactions and by the interorbital hopping anisotropy ratio $t'/t$. Three robust unconventional electronic phases, a pinball liquid, an inverse pinball liquid, and a large-unit-cell $\sqrt{12} \times \sqrt{12}$…
Landau levels (LL) have been predicted to emerge in systems with Dirac nodal points under applied non-uniform strain. We consider 2D, $d_{xy}$ singlet (2D-S) and 3D $p \pm i p$ equal-spin triplet (3D-T) superconductors (SCs). We demonstrate the spinful Majorana nature of the bulk gapless zeroth-LLs. Strain along certain directions can induce two topologically distinct phases in the bulk, with zeroth LLs localized at the the interface. These modes are unstable toward ferromagnetism for 2D-S cases. Emergent real-space Majorana fermions in 3D-T allow for more exotic possibilities.
A fundamental dichotomous classification for all physical systems is according to whether they are spinless or spinful. This is especially crucial for the study of symmetry-protected topological phases, as the two classes have distinct symmetry algebra. As a prominent example, the spacetime inversion symmetry $PT$ satisfies $(PT)^2=\pm 1$ for spinless/spinful systems, and each class features unique topological phases. Here, we reveal a possibility to switch the two fundamental classes via $\mathbb{Z}_2$ projective representations. For $PT$ symmetry, this occurs when $P$ inverses the gauge tran…
Majorana modes can arise as zero energy bound states in a variety of solid state systems. A two-dimensional phase supporting these quasiparticles, for instance, emerges on the surface of a topological superconductor with the zero modes localized at the cores of vortices. At low energies, such a setup can be modeled by Majorana modes that interact with each other on the Abrikosov lattice. In experiments, the lattice is usually triangular. Motivated by the practical relevance, we explore the phase diagram of this Hubbard-like Majorana model using a combination of mean field theory and numerical …
In this paper, we present an exactly solvable model for two dimensional topological superconductor with helical Majorana edge modes protected by time reversal symmetry. Our construction is based on the idea of decorated domain walls and makes use of the Kasteleyn orientation on a two dimensional lattice, which was used for the construction of the symmetry protected fermion phase with $Z_2$ symmetry in Ref. \onlinecite{Tarantino2016,Ware2016}. By decorating the time reversal domain walls with spinful Majorana chains, we are able to construct a commuting projector Hamiltonian with zero correlati…
We discuss a scheme for performing Jordan-Wigner transformation for various lattice fermion systems in two and three dimensions which keeps internal and spatial symmetries manifest. The correspondence between fermionic and bosonic operators is established with the help of auxiliary Majorana fermions. The current construction is applicable to general lattices with even coordination number and an arbitrary number of fermion flavors. The approach is demonstrated on the single-orbital square, triangular and cubic lattices for spin-1/2 fermions. We also discuss the relation to some quantum spin liq…
We model the newly predicted high-$T_c$ superconducting candidates constructed by corner-shared trigonal bipyramidal complexes with an effective three-orbital tight-banding Hamiltonian and investigate the pairing symmetry of their superconducting states driven by electron-electron interactions. Our combined weak and strong coupling based calculations consistently identify the chiral $d+id$ superconductivity as the leading pairing symmetry in a wide doping range with realistic interaction parameters. This pairing state has nontrivial topological Chern-number and can host gapless chiral edge mod…
The pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) method has proven to be a powerful numerical approach to treat frustrated quantum spin systems. In its usual implementation, however, the complex fermionic representation of spin operators introduces unphysical Hilbert space sectors which renders an application at finite temperatures inaccurate. In this work, we formulate a general functional renormalization group approach based on Majorana fermions to overcome these difficulties. We, particularly, implement spin operators via an $SO(3)$ symmetric Majorana representation which does not…
Spin liquid ground states are predicted to arise within several distinct scenarios in condensed matter physics. The observation of these disordered magnetic states is particularly pervasive amongst a class of materials known as frustrated magnets, in which the competition between various magnetic exchange interactions prevents the system from adopting long-range magnetic order at low temperatures. Spin liquids continue to be of great interest due to their exotic nature and the possibility that they may support fractionalised excitations, such as Majorana fermions. Systems that allow for such p…
We consider a model of spinful fermions on the triangular lattice which exhibits a C=2 Chern insulator (CI) phase with a quantized anomalous Hall effect, sandwiched between two normal insulator (NI) phases. The first NI-CI quantum phase transition is driven by simultaneous mass inversion of a pair of Dirac fermions, with short range interactions being perturbatively irrelevant. The second CI-NI transition is driven by a single quadratic band touching point protected by momentum space topology and C_6 lattice symmetry. A one-loop renormalization group analysis shows that short range interaction…
Pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization for frustrated XXZ spin-1/2 models with field or magnetization along the spin-Z direction at finite temperature
Perfect deporalization of the Loudon-Fleury inelastic visible-light scattering in the Kitaev honeycomb model is well known. Though it happens in Heisenberg Kagome and triangular antiferromagnets as well, yet we prove it to be of geometric origin rather than peculiar to quantum spin liquids. A Kitaev spin liquid in the square planar geometry indeed exhibits polarized Raman spectra containing defferent symmetry species, each brought by symmetry-compatible spinon geminate excitations, i.e. arising from symmetry-compatible direct-product representations made of double-valued irreducible representa…
We discuss the properties of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases and the conditions for their realization in condensed matter, and the principles for identifying Majorana bound states (MBSs). Along with the well-known Kitaev chain and superconducting nanowire (SW) models with spin-orbit coupling in an external magnetic field, we discuss models of quasi-2D materials in which MBSs are realized in the presence of noncollinear spin ordering. For finite-length SWs, we demonstrate a cascade of quantum transitions occurring with a change in the magnetic field, accompanied by a change in t…

It is shown that certain fractionally-charged quasiparticles can be modeled on \(D-\)dimensional lattices in terms of unconventional yet simple Fock algebras of creation and annihilation operators. These unconventional Fock algebras are derived from the usual fermionic algebra by taking roots (the square root, cubic root, etc.) of the usual fermionic creation and annihilation operators. If the fermions carry non-Abelian charges, then this approach fractionalizes the Abelian charges only. In particular, the \(m\)th-root of a spinful fermion carries charge \(e/m\) and spin \(1/2\). Just like tak…
Lattice gauge theories are a powerful language to theoretically describe a variety of strongly correlated systems, including frustrated magnets, high-$T_c$ superconductors, and topological phases. However, in many cases gauge fields couple to gapless matter degrees of freedom and such theories become notoriously difficult to analyze quantitatively. In this paper we study several examples of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories with gapless fermions at finite density, in one and two spatial dimensions, that are either exactly soluble or whose solution reduces to that of a known problem. We con…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a spinfull and time-reversal symmetric Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization formalism for flat-band Z$_2$ topological insulators. Such a study extend our previous one [L. S. G. Leite and R. L. Doretto, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 104}, 155129 (2021)] concerning the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a correlated Chern insulator described by a Haldane-Hubbard model. We consider the topological Hubbard model at $1/4$ filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit and in the nearly flat band limit of its lower free-electronic band…
