For a nilpotent group $G$, let $Ξ(G)$ be the difference between the complement of the generating graph of $G$ and the commuting graph of $G$, with vertices corresponding to central elements of $G$ removed. That is, $Ξ(G)$ has vertex set $G \setminus Z(G)$, with two vertices adjacent if and only if they do not commute and do not generate $G$. Additionally, let $Ξ^+(G)$ be the subgraph of $Ξ(G)$ induced by its non-isolated vertices. We show that if $Ξ(G)$ has an edge, then $Ξ^+(G)$ is connected with diameter $2$ or $3$, with $Ξ(G) = Ξ^+(G)$ in the diameter $3$ case. In the infinite case, our results apply more generally, to any group with every maximal subgroup normal. When $G$ is finite, we explore the relationship between the structures of $G$ and $Ξ(G)$ in more detail.
Let $G$ be a non-abelian group and $Z(G)$ be the center of $G$. The non-commuting graph $Γ_G$ associated to $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is $G\setminus Z(G)$ and two distinct elements $x,y$ are adjacent if and only if $xy\neq yx$. We prove that if $G$ and $H$ are non-abelian nilpotent groups with irregular isomorphic non-commuting graphs, then $|G|=|H|$.
Let $H$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that any "exponential map" for $H$ induces a bijection between the variety of $r$-tuples of commuting $[p]$-nilpotent elements in $Lie(H)$ and the variety of height $r$ infinitesimal one-parameter subgroups of $H$. In particular, we show that for a connected reductive group $G$ in pretty good characteristic, there is a canonical exponential map for $G$ and hence a canonical bijection between the aforementioned varieties, answering in this case questions raised both implicitly and explicitly…
This paper addresses various questions about pairs of similarity classes of matrices which contain commuting elements. In the case of matrices over finite fields, we show that the problem of determining such pairs reduces to a question about nilpotent classes; this reduction makes use of class types in the sense of Steinberg and Green. We investigate the set of scalars that arise as determinants of elements of the centralizer algebra of a matrix, providing a complete description of this set in terms of the class type of the matrix. Several results are established concerning the commuting of ni…
Let X and Y be commuting nilpotent K-endomorphisms of a vector space V, where K is a field of characteristic p >= 0. If F=K(t) is the field of rational functions on the projective line, consider the K(t)-endomorphism A=X+tY of V. If p=0, or if the (p-1)-st power of A is 0, we show here that X and Y are tangent to the unipotent radical of the centralizer of A in GL(V). For all geometric points (a:b) of a suitable open subset of the projective line, it follows that X and Y are tangent to the unipotent radical of the centralizer of aX+bY. This answers a question of J. Pevtsova.
In this work we discuss whether the non-commuting graph of a finite group can determine its nilpotency. More precisely, Abdollahi, Akbari and Maimani conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are finite groups with isomorphic non-commuting graphs and $G$ is nilpotent, then $H$ must be nilpotent as well (Conjecture 2). We pose a new conjecture (Conjecture 3) that, together with the assumption $|Z(G)|\geq|Z(H)|$, implies Conjecture 2 and we prove it for groups in which all centralizers of non-central elements are abelian.
Let $G$ be $2$-generated group. The generating graph of $Γ(G)$ is the graph whose vertices are the elements of $G$ and where two vertices $g$ and $h$ are adjacent if $G=\langle g,h\rangle$. This graph encodes the combinatorial structure of the distribution of generating pairs across $G$. In this paper we study several natural graph theoretic properties related to the connectedness of $Γ(G)$ in the case where $G$ is a finite nilpotent group. For example, we prove that if $G$ is nilpotent, then the graph obtained from $Γ(G)$ by removing its isolated vertices is maximally connected and, if $|G| \…
In this paper the notion of nilpotent right transversal and solvable right transversal has been defined. Further, it is proved that if a core-free subgroup has a generating solvable transversal or a generating nilpotent transversal, then the whole group is solvable.
Let G be the free product of groups A and B with commuting subgroups H \leqslant A and K \leqslant B, and let C be the class of all finite groups or the class of all finite p-groups. We derive the description of all C-separable cyclic subgroups of G provided this group is residually a C-group. We prove, in particular, that if A, B are finitely generated nilpotent groups and H, K are p'-isolated in the free factors, then all p'-isolated cyclic subgroups of G are separable in the class of all finite p-groups. The same statement is true provided A, B are free and H, K are p'-isolated and cyclic.
A direct consequence of Gromov's theorem is that if a group has polynomial geodesic growth with respect to some finite generating set then it is virtually nilpotent. However, until now the only examples known were virtually abelian. In this note we furnish an example of a virtually 2-step nilpotent group having polynomial geodesic growth with respect to a certain finite generating set.
We prove that, in a finitely generated residually finite group of subexponential growth, the proportion of commuting pairs is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian. In particular, this covers the case where the group has polynomial growth (i.e., virtually nilpotent groups, where the hypothesis of residual finiteness is always satisfied). We also show that, for non-elementary hyperbolic groups, the proportion of commuting pairs is always zero.
In this paper, we initiate the study of palindromic automorphisms of groups that are free in some variety. More specifically, we define palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups and show that the set of such automorphisms is a group. We find a generating set for the group of palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 2 and 3. In particular, we obtain a generating set for the group of central palindromic automorphisms of these groups. In the end, we determine central palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 3 which satisfy the necessary condition of Br…
Feit and Fine derived a generating function for the number of ordered pairs of commuting n by n matrices over the finite field F_q. This has been reproved and studied by Bryan and Morrison from the viewpoint of motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory. In this note we give a new proof of the Feit-Fine result, and generalize it to the Lie algebra of finite unitary groups and to the Lie algebra of odd characteristic finite symplectic groups. We extract some asymptotic information from these generating functions. Finally, we derive generating functions for the number of commuting nilpotent elements for th…
We study a three-player variation of the impartial avoidance game introduced by Anderson and Harary. Three players take turns selecting previously-unselected elements of a finite group. The losing player is the one who selects an element that causes the set of jointly-selected elements to be a generating set for the group, with the previous player winning and the remaining player coming in second place. We describe the winning strategy for these games on cyclic, dihedral, and nilpotent groups.
We compute the numbers g(n,2,2) of nilpotent groups of order n, of class at most 2 generated by at most 2 generators, by giving an explicit formula for the Dirichlet generating function \sum_{n=1}^\infty g(n,2,2)n^{-s}.
We introduce the notion of commuting probability, $p(G)$, for an algebraic group $G$. This notion is inspired by the corresponding notions in finite groups and compact groups. The computation of $p(G)$ for reductive groups is readily done using the notion of $z$-classes. We introduce two generalisations of this relation, $iz$-equivalence and $dz$-equivalence. These notions lead us naturally to the notion of a regular element in $G$. Finally, with the help of this notion of regular elements, we compute $p(G)$ for a connected, linear algebraic group $G$. We also compute the set of limit points o…
We associate a graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$ with a semigroup $S$ (called the upper non-nilpotent graph of $S$). The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). In case $S$ is a group this graph has been introduced by A. Abdollahi and M. Zarrin and some remarkable properties have been proved. The aim of this paper is to study this graph (and some related graphs, such as the non-commuting graph) and to discover the algebraic structure of $S$ determined by the associated graph. It is shown th…
Let $n>0$ be an integer and $\mathcal{X}$ be a class of groups. We say that a group $G$ satisfies the condition $(\mathcal{X},n)$ whenever in every subset with $n+1$ elements of $G$ there exist distinct elements $x,y$ such that $<x,y>$ is in $\mathcal{X}$. Let $\mathcal{N}$ and $ \mathcal{A}$ be the classes of nilpotent groups and abelian groups, respectively. Here we prove that: (1) If $G$ is a finite semi-simple group satisfying the condition $(\mathcal{N},n)$, then $|G|<c^{2[\log_{21}n]n^2} [\log_{21}n]!$, for some constant $c$. (2) A finite insoluble group $G$ satisfies the condition $(\ma…
Let $K$ be a subgroup of a finite group $G$. The probability that an element of $G$ commutes with an element of $K$ is denoted by $Pr(K,G)$. Assume that $Pr(K,G)\geqε$ for some fixed $ε>0$. We show that there is a normal subgroup $T\leq G$ and a subgroup $B\leq K$ such that the indexes $[G:T]$ and $[K:B]$ and the order of the commutator subgroup $[T,B]$ are $ε$-bounded. This extends the well known theorem, due to P. M. Neumann, that covers the case where $K=G$. We deduce a number of corollaries of this result. A typical application is that if $K$ is the generalized Fitting subgroup $F^*(G)$ th…

We study representation zeta functions of finitely generated, torsion-free nilpotent groups which are rational points of unipotent group schemes over rings of integers of number fields. Using the Kirillov orbit method and p-adic integration, we prove rationality and functional equations for almost all local factors of the Euler products of these zeta functions. We further give explicit formulae, in terms of Dedekind zeta functions, for the zeta functions of class-2-nilpotent groups obtained from three infinite families of group schemes, generalising the integral Heisenberg group. As an immedia…
We prove that the nilpotent product of a set of groups $A_{1},\dots, A_{s}$ has finite palindromic width if and only if the palindromic widths of $A_{i}, i=1,\dots, s,$ are finite. We give a new proof that the commutator width of $F_n \wr K$ is infinite, where $F_n$ is a free group of rank $n \geq 2$ and $K$ a finite group. This result, combining with a result of Fink \cite{f1} gives examples of groups with infinite commutator width but finite palindromic width with respect to some generating set.
We consider the fundamental group $π$ of a surface of finite type equipped with the infinite generating set consisting of all simple closed curves. We show that every nilpotent quotient of $π$ has finite diameter with respect to the word metric given by this set. This is in contrast with a result of Danny Calegari that shows that $π$ has infinite diameter with respect to this set. Furthermore, we give a general criterion for a finitely generated group equipped with a generating set to have this property.
We study random torsion-free nilpotent groups generated by a pair of random words of length $\ell$ in the standard generating set of $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Specifically, we give asymptotic results about the step properties of the group when the lengths of the generating words are functions of $n$. We show that the threshold function for asymptotic abelianness is $\ell = c \sqrt{n}$, for which the probability approaches $e^{-2c^2}$, and also that the threshold function for having full-step, the same step as $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$, is between $c n^2$ and $c n^3$.
We study the speed of convergence to the asymptotic cone for Cayley graphs of nilpotent groups. Burago showed that $\{(\mathbb{Z}^d, \frac{1}{n} ρ,id)\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converges to $(\mathbb{R}^d,d_{\infty},id)$ and its speed is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff distance. Later Breuillard and Le Donne gave estimates for non-abelian cases, and constructed an example whose speed of convergence is slower than $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}})$. For $2$-step nilpotent groups, we show that if the Mal'cev completion is non-singular, then the speed of convergence is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ for any c…
We explore finitely generated groups by studying the nilpotent towers and the various Lie algebras attached to such groups. Our main goal is to relate an isomorphism extension problem in the Postnikov tower to the existence of certain commuting diagrams. This recasts a result of G. Rybnikov in a more general framework and leads to an application to hyperplane arrangements, whereby we show that all the nilpotent quotients of a decomposable arrangement group are combinatorially determined.
It is well known that the automorphism group of a regular dessin is a two-generator finite group, and the isomorphism classes of regular dessins with automorphism groups isomorphic to a given finite group $G$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the orbits of the action of $\Aut(G)$ on the ordered generating pairs of $G$. If there is only one orbit, then up to isomorphism the regular dessin is uniquely determined by the group $G$ and it is called uniquely regular. In the paper we investigate the classification of uniquely regular dessins with a nilpotent automorphism group. The problem is red…
In this work we study the structure and cardinality of maximal sets of commuting and anticommuting Paulis in the setting of the abelian Pauli group. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for anticommuting sets to be maximal, and present an efficient algorithm for generating anticommuting sets of maximum size. As a theoretical tool, we introduce commutativity maps, and study properties of maps associated with elements in the cosets with respect to anticommuting minimal generating sets. We also derive expressions for the number of distinct sets of commuting and anticommuting abelian Pau…
Given a 2-generated finite group $G$, the non-generating graph of $G$ has as vertices the elements of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are distinct and do not generate $G$. We consider the graph $Σ(G)$ obtained from the non-generating graph of $G$ by deleting the universal vertices. We prove that if the derived subgroup of $G$ is not nilpotent, then this graph is connected, with diameter at most 5. Moreover we give a complete classification of the finite groups $G$ such that $Σ(G)$ is disconnected.
The commuting graph of a finite non-commutative semigroup $S$, denoted $\cg(S)$, is a simple graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of $S$ and two distinct vertices $x,y$ are adjacent if $xy=yx$. Let $\mi(X)$ be the symmetric inverse semigroup of partial injective transformations on a finite set $X$. The semigroup $\mi(X)$ has the symmetric group $\sym(X)$ of permutations on $X$ as its group of units. In 1989, Burns and Goldsmith determined the clique number of the commuting graph of $\sym(X)$. In 2008, Iranmanesh and Jafarzadeh found an upper bound of the diameter of $\cg(\sym(X))$…
We consider ordered tuples in finite groups generating nilpotent subgroups. Given an integer $q$ we consider the poset of nilpotent subgroups of class less than $q$ and its corresponding coset poset. These posets give rise to a family of finite Dirichlet series parametrized by the nilpotency class of the subgroups, which in turn reflect probabilistic and topological invariants determined by these subgroups. Connections of these series to filtrations of classifying spaces of a group are discussed.
We study the action of a nilpotent group G with finite generating set S on its horofunction boundary. We show that there is one finite orbit associated to each facet of the polytope obtained by projecting S into the infinite component of the abelianisation of G. We also prove that these are the only finite orbits of Busemann points. To finish off, we examine in detail the Heisenberg group with its usual generators.
The \emph{generating chromatic number} of a group $G$, $\chigen(G)$, is the maximum number of colors $k$ such that there is a monochromatic generating set for each coloring of the elements of $G$ in $k$ colors. If no such maximal $k$ exists, we set $\chigen(G)=\infty$. Equivalently, $\chigen(G)$ is the maximal number $k$ such that there is no cover of $G$ by proper subgroups ($\infty$ if there is no such maximal $k$). We provide characterizations, for arbitrary gruops, in the cases $\chigen(G)=\infty$ and $\chigen(G)=2$. For nilpotent groups (in particular, for abelian ones), all possible chro…
Let S be a finite generating set of a torsion-free, nilpotent group G. We show that every automorphism of the Cayley graph Cay(G;S) is affine. (That is, every automorphism of the graph is obtained by composing a group automorphism with multiplication by an element of the group.) More generally, we show that if Cay(G;S) and Cay(G';S') are connected Cayley graphs of finite valency on two nilpotent groups G and G', then every isomorphism from Cay(G;S) to Cay(G';S') factors through to a well-defined affine map from G/N to G'/N', where N and N' are the torsion subgroups of G and G', respectively. F…
We study the decay of convolution powers of a large family $μ_{S,a}$ of measures on finitely generated nilpotent groups. Here, $S=(s_1,...,s_k)$ is a generating $k$-tuple of group elements and $a= (α_1,...,α_k)$ is a $k$-tuple of reals in the interval $(0,2)$. The symmetric measure $μ_{S,a}$ is supported by $S^*=\{s_i^{m}, 1\le i\le k,\,m\in \mathbb Z\}$ and gives probability proportional to $$(1+m)^{-α_i-1}$$ to $s_i^{\pm m}$, $i=1,...,k,$ $m\in \mathbb N$. We determine the behavior of the probability of return $μ_{S,a}^{(n)}(e)$ as $n$ tends to infinity. This behavior depends in somewhat sub…
