We study the action of a nilpotent group G with finite generating set S on its horofunction boundary. We show that there is one finite orbit associated to each facet of the polytope obtained by projecting S into the infinite component of the abelianisation of G. We also prove that these are the only finite orbits of Busemann points. To finish off, we examine in detail the Heisenberg group with its usual generators.
We consider finitely generated group endowed with a word metric. The group acts on itself by isometries, which induces an action on its horofunction boundary. The conjecture is that nilpotent groups act trivially on their reduced boundary. We will show this for the Heisenberg group. The main tool will be a discrete version of the isoperimetric inequality.
Let $G$ be a classical linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field, and let $\mathfrak{n}$ denote the subset of nilpotent elements in its Lie algebra. In this paper we study a partial order on the $G$-orbits in $\mathfrak{n}$ given by taking limits along cocharacters of $G$. This gives rise to the so-called accessibility order on the nilpotent orbits. Our main results show that for general and special linear algebras, this new order coincides with the usual dominance order on nilpotent orbits, but for symplectic and orthogonal algebras this is not the case.
Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field with Lie algebra g. Then the orbits of nilpotent elements of g under the adjoint action of G have been classified. We describe a simple algorithm for finding a representative of a nilpotent orbit. We use this to compute lists of representatives of these orbits for the Lie algebras of exceptional type. Then we give two applications. The first one concerns settling a conjecture by Elashvili on the index of centralizers of nilpotent orbits, for the case where the Lie algebra is of exceptional type. The second deals with minimal …
In the paper "The Second cohomology of nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras, Kyoto J. Math. 60 (2020), no. 2, 717-799" by I. Biswas, P. Chatterjee and C. Maity homotopy types of nilpotent orbits are explicitly described in the case of real simple classical Lie algebras for which any maximal compact subgroup in the associated adjoint group is not semisimple. In this paper we extend the above description of homotopy type of nilpotent orbits to the remaining cases of real simple classical Lie algebras for which any maximal compact subgroup in the associated adjoint group is semisimple.
In this paper I explore the relationship between regular functions associated to local systems on nilpotent orbits and unipotent representations in the complex groups.
Suppose that $A$ is a finite nilpotent group of odd order acting good in the sense of \cite{EGJ} on the group $G$ of odd order. Under some additional assumptions we prove that the Fitting height of $G$ is bounded above by the sum of the numbers of primes dividing $|A|$ and $|C_G(A)|$ counted with multiplicities.
We give a criterion for the Kostant-Kirillov form on an adjoint orbit in a real semisimple Lie group to be exact. We explicitly compute the second cohomology of all the nilpotent adjoint orbits in every complex simple Lie algebras.
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Assume that p is good for G. In this note we classify all the spherical nilpotent G-orbits in the Lie algebra of G. The classification is the same as in the characteristic zero case obtained by D.I. Panyushev in 1994: for e a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra of G, the G-orbit G.e is spherical if and only if the height of e is at most 3.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$. The classification of the conjugacy classes of unipotent elements of $G(k)$ and nilpotent orbits of $G$ on $\operatorname{Lie}(G)$ is well-established. One knows there are representatives of every unipotent class as a product of root group elements and every nilpotent orbit as a sum of root elements. We give explicit representatives in terms of a Chevalley basis for the eminent classes. A unipotent (resp. nilpotent) element is said to be eminent if it is not contained in any subsystem subgroup (re…
The second de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact real forms of classical complex simple Lie algebras are explicitly computed. Furthermore, the first de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact classical simple Lie algebras are computed; they are proven to be zero for nilpotent orbits in all the complex simple Lie algebras. A key component in these computations is a description of the second and first cohomology groups of homogeneous spaces of general connected Lie groups which is obtained here. This description, which generalizes a previous theorem of th…
Let $k$ denote a field with nontrivial discrete valuation. We assume that $k$ is complete with perfect residue field. Let $G$ be the group of $k$-rational points of a reductive, linear algebraic group defined over $k$. Let $\gg$ denote the Lie algebra of $G$. Fix $r \in \R$. Subject to some restrictions, we show that the set of distinguished degenerate Moy-Prasad cosets of depth $r$ (up to an equivalence relation) parametrizes the nilpotent orbits in $\gg$.
In this note we investigate the normality of closures of orthogonal and symplectic nilpotent orbits in positive characteristic. We prove that the closure of such a nilpotent orbit is normal provided that neither type d nor type e minimal irreducible degeneration occurs in the closure, and conversely if the closure is normal, then any type e minimal irreducible degeneration does not occur in it. Here, the minimal irreducible degenerations of a nilpotent orbit are introduced by W. Hesselink in [6] (or see [11] from which we take Table 1 for the complete list of all minimal irreducible degenerati…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function and a dynamical Mertens' theorem for the full $G$-shift for a finitely-generated torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. Using bounds for the M{ö}bius function on the lattice of subgroups of finite index and known subgroup growth estimates, we find a single asymptotic of the shape \[ \sum_{|τ|\le N}\frac{1}{e^{h|τ|}}\sim CN^α(\log N)^β \] where $|τ|$ is the cardinality of the finite orbit $τ$. For the usual orbit-counting function we find upper and lower bounds together with numerical evidence to suggest that for actions of non-cyclic …
For local non-archimedean fields $k$ of sufficiently large residual characteristic, we explicitly parametrize and count the rational nilpotent adjoint orbits in each algebraic orbit of orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. We separately give an explicit algorithmic construction for representatives of each orbit. We then, in the general setting of groups $\mathrm{GL}_n(D)$, $\mathrm{SL}_n(D)$ (where $D$ is a central division algebra over $k$) or classical groups, give a new characterisation of the "building set" (defined by DeBacker) of an $\mathfrak{sl}_2(k)$-triple in terms of the buildin…
Let G be a connected linear semisimple Lie group with Lie algebra g and maximal compact subgroup K. Let K_C -> Aut(p_C) be the complexified isotropy representation at the identity coset of the corresponding symmetric space. Suppose that O is a nilpotent K_C-orbit in p_C, and bar(O} is its Zariski closure in p_C. We study the K-type decomposition of the ring of regular functions on bar(O} when O is spherical and ``small''. We also show that this decomposition gives the asymptotic directions of K-types in any irreducible (g_C, K)-module whose associated variety is bar(O).
We organize the nilpotent orbits in the exceptional complex Lie algebras into series using the triality model and show that within each series the dimension of the orbit is a linear function of the natural parameter a=1,2,4,8, respectively for f_4,e_6,e_7,e_8. We also obtain explicit representatives in a uniform manner. We observe similar regularities for the centralizers of nilpotent elements in a series and graded components in the associated grading of the ambient Lie algebra. More strikingly, for a greater than one, the degrees of the unipotent characters of the corresponding Chevalley gro…
The geodesic orbit property has been studied intensively for Riemannian manifolds. Geodesic orbit spaces are homogeneous and allow simplifications of many structural questions using the Lie algebra of the isometry group. Weakly symmetric Riemannian manifolds are geodesic orbit spaces. Here we define "naturally reductive" for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and note that they are geodesic orbit spaces. A few years ago two of the authors proved that weakly symmetric pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are geodesic orbit spaces. In particular these results apply to pseudo-Riemannian Lorentz manifolds. There …
