We prove that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\binom{n}{2} - (n - 4)$ edges has a fractional triangle decomposition, for $n \ge 7$. This is a key ingredient in our proof, given in a companion paper, that every $n$-vertex $2$-coloured complete graph contains $n^2/12 + o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint monochromatic triangles, which confirms a conjecture of Erdős.
Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 14/5. Improving on estimates of Hatami and Zhu and of Lu and Peng, we prove that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 32/11 (which is roughly 2.909).
A triangle decomposition of a graph is a partition of its edges into triangles. A fractional triangle decomposition of a graph is an assignment of a non-negative weight to each of its triangles such that the sum of the weights of the triangles containing any given edge is one. We prove that for all $ε> 0$, every large enough graph graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(0.9 + ε)n$ has a fractional triangle decomposition. This improves a result of Garaschuk that the same result holds for graphs with minimum degree at least $0.956n$. Together with a recent result of Barber, Kühn, Lo…
We compute a minimum degree threshold sufficient for 3-partite graphs to admit a fractional triangle decomposition. Together with recent work of Barber, Kühn, Lo, Osthus and Taylor, this leads to bounds for exact decompositions and in particular the completion problem for sparse partial latin squares. Some extensions are considered as well.
Let $G$ be any triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ\leq 3$. Staton proved that the independence number of $G$ is at least 5/14n. Heckman and Thomas conjectured that Staton's result can be strengthened into a bound on the fractional chromatic number of $G$, namely $χ_f(G)\leq 14/5. Recently, Hatami and Zhu proved $χ_f(G) \leq 3 -{3/64}$. In this paper, we prove $χ_f(G) \leq 3- 3/43$.
We characterize a family of number triangles whose production matrices are closely related to the original number triangle. We study a number of such triangles that are of combinatorial significance. For a specific subfamily, these triangles relate to sequences that have interesting convolution recurrences and continued fraction generating functions.
Partitioning the edges of a graph into edge disjoint triangles forms a triangle decomposition of the graph. A famous conjecture by Nash-Williams from 1970 asserts that any sufficiently large, triangle divisible graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $0.75 n$ admits a triangle decomposition. In the light of recent results, the fractional version of this problem is of central importance. A fractional triangle decomposition is an assignment of non-negative weights to each triangle in a graph such that the sum of the weights along each edge is precisely 1. We show that for any graph on…
We prove that every subcubic triangle-free graph has fractional chromatic number at most 14/5, thus confirming a conjecture of Heckman and Thomas [A new proof of the independence ratio of triangle-free cubic graphs. Discrete Math. 233 (2001), 233--237].
A triangle $T'$ is $\varepsilon$-similar to another triangle $T$ if their angles pairwise differ by at most $\varepsilon$. Given a triangle $T$, $\varepsilon>0$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, Bárány and Füredi asked to determine the maximum number of triangles $h(n,T,\varepsilon)$ being $\varepsilon$-similar to $T$ in a planar point set of size $n$. We show that for almost all triangles $T$ there exists $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(T)>0$ such that $h(n,T,\varepsilon)=n^3/24 (1+o(1))$. Exploring connections to hypergraph Turán problems, we use flag algebras and stability techniques for the proof.
An $(a:b)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a function $f$ which maps the vertices of $G$ into $b$-element subsets of some set of size $a$ in such a way that $f(u)$ is disjoint from $f(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The fractional chromatic number $χ_f(G)$ is the infimum of $a/b$ over all pairs of positive integers $a,b$ such that $G$ has an $(a:b)$-coloring. Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of every triangle-free graph $G$ of maximum degree at most three is at most 2.8. Hatami and Zhu proved that $χ_f(G) \leq 3-3/64 \approx 2.953$. Lu and …
A graph $G$ is called a $(3,j;n)$-minimal Ramsey graph if it has the least amount of edges, $e(3,j;n)$, given that $G$ is triangle-free, the independence number $α(G) < j$ and that $G$ has $n$ vertices. Triangle-free graphs $G$ with $α(G) < j$ and where $e(G) - e(3,j;n)$ is small are said to be almost minimal Ramsey graphs. We look at a construction of some almost minimal Ramsey graphs, called $H_{13}$-patterned graphs. We make computer calculations of the number of almost minimal Ramsey triangle-free graphs that are $H_{13}$-patterned. The results of these calculations indicate that many of t…
In this work, we establish an analogue result of the Erdös-Stone theorem of weighted digraphs using Regularity Lemma of digraphs. We give a stability result of oriented graphs and digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle and show that almost all oriented graphs and almost all digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle are almost bipartite respectively.
Almost $50$ years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given $n$ points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least $\left\lfloor \frac{n}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+1}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+2}{3} \right\rfloor$ such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for eve…
We present an intriguing question about lattice points in triangles where Pick's formula is "almost correct". The question has its origin in knot theory, but its statement is purely combinatorial. After more than 30 years the topological question was recently solved, but the lattice point problem is still open.
For positive integers $c, s \geq 1$, let $M_3(c, s)$ be the least integer such that any set of at least $M_3(c, s)$ points in the plane, no three on a line and colored with $c$ colors, contains a monochromatic triangle with at most $s$ interior points. The case $s=0$, which corresponds to empty monochromatic triangles, has been studied extensively over the last few years. In particular, it is known that $M_3(1, 0)=3$, $M_3(2, 0)=9$ and $M_3(c, 0)=\infty$, for $c\geq 3$. In this paper we extend these results when $c \geq 2$ and $s \geq 1$. We prove that the least integer $λ_3(c)$ such that $M_3…
We prove that in every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_n$ there is a collection of $n^2/12 + o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint monochromatic triangles, thus confirming a conjecture of Erdős. We also prove a corresponding stability result, showing that $2$-colourings that are close to attaining the aforementioned bound have a colour class which is close to bipartite. As part of our proof, we confirm a recent conjecture of Tyomkyn about the fractional version of this problem.
Given $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $f_0$ such that, if $f_0 \le f \le Δ^2+1$, then for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$ in which the neighbourhood of every vertex in $G$ spans at most $Δ^2/f$ edges, (i) an independent set of $G$ drawn uniformly at random has at least $(1/2-\varepsilon)(n/Δ)\log f$ vertices in expectation, and (ii) the fractional chromatic number of $G$ is at most $(2+\varepsilon)Δ/\log f$. These bounds cannot in general be improved by more than a factor $2$ asymptotically. One may view these as stronger versions of results of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi (19…
We prove that, for sufficiently large $n$, every graph of order $n$ with minimum degree at least $0.852n$ has a fractional edge-decomposition into triangles. We do this by refining a method used by Dross to establish a bound of $0.9n$. By a result of Barber, Kühn, Lo and Osthus, our result implies that, for each $ε>0$, every graph of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum degree at least $(0.852+ε)n$ has a triangle decomposition if and only if it has all even degrees and number of edges a multiple of three.
In this paper, we investigate the relation between the (fractional) domination number of a digraph $G$ and the independence number of its underlying graph, denoted by $α(G)$. More precisely, we prove that every digraph $G$ has fractional domination number at most $2α(G)$, and every directed triangle-free digraph $G$ has domination number at most $α(G)\cdot α(G)!$. The first bound is sharp.
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We first show that for every triangle-free planar graph G and a vertex x of G, the graph G has a set coloring phi by subsets of {1,...,6} such that |phi(v)|>=2 for each vertex v of G and |phi(x)|=3. As a corollary, every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices is (6n:2n+1)-colorable. We further use this result to prove that for every Delta, there exists a constant M_Delta such that every planar graph G of girth at least five a…
Consider the triangle-free graph process, which starts from the empty graph on $n$ vertices and a random ordering of the possible ${n \choose 2}$ edges; the edges are added in this ordering provided the graph remains triangle free. We will show that there exists a constant $c$ such that no copy of any fixed finite triangle-free graph on $k$ vertices with at least $ck$ edges asymptotically almost surely appears in the triangle-free graph process.
A $d$-regular graph on $n$ nodes has at most $T_{\max} = \frac{n}{3} \tbinom{d}{2}$ triangles. We compute the leading asymptotics of the probability that a large random $d$-regular graph has at least $c \cdot T_{\max}$ triangles, and provide a strong structural description of such graphs. When $d$ is fixed, we show that such graphs typically consist of many disjoint $d+1$-cliques and an almost triangle-free part. When $d$ is allowed to grow with $n$, we show that such graphs typically consist of $d+o(d)$ sized almost cliques together with an almost triangle-free part. This confirms a conjectur…
We study the minimum degree necessary to guarantee the existence of perfect and almost-perfect triangle-tilings in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with sublinear independence number. In this setting, we show that if $δ(G) \ge n/3 + o(n)$ then $G$ has a triangle-tiling covering all but at most four vertices. Also, for every $r \ge 5$, we asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for a perfect triangle-tiling under the additional assumptions that $G$ is $K_r$-free and $n$ is divisible by $3$.
Tuza conjectured that for every graph $G$, the maximum size $ν$ of a set of edge-disjoint triangles and minimum size $τ$ of a set of edges meeting all triangles satisfy $τ\leq 2ν$. We consider an edge-weighted version of this conjecture, which amounts to packing and covering triangles in multigraphs. Several known results about the original problem are shown to be true in this context, and some are improved. In particular, we answer a question of Krivelevich who proved that $τ\leq 2ν^*$ (where $ν^*$ is the fractional version of $ν$), and asked if this is tight. We prove that $τ\leq 2ν^*-\frac{…
We consider the problem of decomposing some $t$-uniform hypergraph $G$ into copies of another, say $H$, with nonnegative rational weights. For fixed $H$ on $k$ vertices, we show that this is always possible for all $G$ having sufficiently many vertices and `local density' at least $1-C(t)k^{-2t}$. In the case $t=2$ and $H=K_3$, we show that all large graphs with density at least $27/28$ admit a fractional triangle decomposition. The proof relies on estimates of certain eigenvalues in the Johnson scheme.
An oriented graph is a directed graph which can be obtained from a simple undirected graph by orienting its edges. In this paper we show that any oriented graph G on n vertices with minimum indegree and outdegree at least (1/2-o(1))n contains a packing of cyclic triangles covering all but at most 3 vertices. This almost answers a question of Cuckler and Yuster and is best possible, since for n = 3 mod 18 there is a tournament with no perfect triangle packing and with all indegrees and outdegrees (n-1)/2 or (n-1)/2 \pm 1. Under the same hypotheses, we also show that one can embed any prescribed…

We prove that any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d$ contains a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree at least $d^2/(2n)$. This is sharp up to a logarithmic factor in $n$. Relatedly, we show that the fractional chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most the minimum of $n/d$ and $(2+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. This is sharp up to constant factors. Similarly, we show that the list chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most $O(\min\{\sqrt{n},(n\log n)/d\})$ as $n\to\infty$. Relatedly, we also make two conjecture…
A family of graphs F is said to be triangle-intersecting if for any two graphs G,H in F, the intersection of G and H contains a triangle. A conjecture of Simonovits and Sos from 1976 states that the largest triangle-intersecting families of graphs on a fixed set of n vertices are those obtained by fixing a specific triangle and taking all graphs containing it, resulting in a family of size (1/8) 2^{n choose 2}. We prove this conjecture and some generalizations (for example, we prove that the same is true of odd-cycle-intersecting families, and we obtain best possible bounds on the size of the …
A triangle decomposition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the edges of $G$ into triangles. Two necessary conditions for $G$ to admit such a decomposition are that $|E(G)|$ is a multiple of three and that the degree of any vertex in $G$ is even; we call such graphs tridivisible. Kirkman's work on Steiner triple systems established that for $G \simeq K_n$, $G$ admits a triangle decomposition precisely when $G$ is tridivisible. In 1970, Nash-Williams conjectured that tridivisiblity is also sufficient for "almost-complete" graphs, which for this talk's purposes we interpret as any graph $G$ on $n$…
The guessing game introduced by Riis is a variant of the "guessing your own hats" game and can be played on any simple directed graph G on n vertices. For each digraph G, it is proved that there exists a unique guessing number gn(G) associated to the guessing game played on G. When we consider the directed edge to be bidirected, in other words, the graph G is undirected, Christofides and Markstrom introduced a method to bound the value of the guessing number from below using the fractional clique number Kf(G). In particular they showed gn(G) >= |V(G)| - Kf(G). Moreover, it is pointed out that…
A graph is (m, k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of any subgraph induced on ver- tices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number for a graph is the least positive integer m for which the graph is (m, k)-colourable. All triangle-free graphs on 8 or fewer vertices are (2, 1)-colourable. There are exactly four triangle-free graphs of order 9 which have 1-defective chromatic number 3. We show that these four graphs appear as subgraphs in almost all triangle-free graphs of order 10 with 1-defective chromatic numb…
Recently, settling a question of Erdős, Balogh and Petříčková showed that there are at most $2^{n^2/8+o(n^2)}$ $n$-vertex maximal triangle-free graphs, matching the previously known lower bound. Here we characterize the typical structure of maximal triangle-free graphs. We show that almost every maximal triangle-free graph $G$ admits a vertex partition $X\cup Y$ such that $G[X]$ is a perfect matching and $Y$ is an independent set. Our proof uses the Ruzsa-Szemerédi removal lemma, the Erdős-Simonovits stability theorem, and recent results of Balogh-Morris-Samotij and Saxton-Thomason on characte…
Our main result essentially reduces the problem of finding an edge-decomposition of a balanced r-partite graph of large minimum degree into r-cliques to the problem of finding a fractional r-clique decomposition or an approximate one. Together with very recent results of Bowditch and Dukes as well as Montgomery on fractional decompositions into triangles and cliques respectively, this gives the best known bounds on the minimum degree which ensures an edge-decomposition of an r-partite graph into r-cliques (subject to trivially necessary divisibility conditions). The case of triangles translate…
The Ramsey number r(K_3,Q_n) is the smallest integer N such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph K_N contains either a red n-dimensional hypercube, or a blue triangle. Almost thirty years ago, Burr and Erdős conjectured that r(K_3,Q_n) = 2^{n+1} - 1 for every n \in \N, but the first non-trivial upper bound was obtained only recently, by Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov, who proved that r(K_3,Q_n) \le 7000 \cdot 2^n. Here we show that r(K_3,Q_n) = (1 + o(1)) 2^{n+1} as n \to \infty.
Recently there has been much interest in studying random graph analogues of well known classical results in extremal graph theory. Here we follow this trend and investigate the structure of triangle-free subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with high minimum degree. We prove that asymptotically almost surely each triangle-free spanning subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $\big(\frac{2}{5} + o(1)\big)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to bipartite, and each spanning triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{3}+\varepsilon)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to $r$…
Let $h(n)$ denote the maximum number of triangles with angles between $59^\circ$ and $61^\circ$ in any $n$-element planar set. Our main result is an exact formula for $h(n)$. We also prove $h(n)= n^3/24+ O(n \log n)$ as $n\to \infty$. However, there are triangles $T$ and $n$-point sets $P$ showing that the number of $\varepsilon$-similar copies of $T$ in $P$ can exceed $n^3/15$ for any $\varepsilon>0$.
We prove two distinct and natural refinements of a recent breakthrough result of Molloy (and a follow-up work of Bernshteyn) on the (list) chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. In both our results, we permit the amount of colour made available to vertices of lower degree to be accordingly lower. One result concerns list colouring and correspondence colouring, while the other concerns fractional colouring. Our proof of the second illustrates the use of the hard-core model to prove a Johansson-type result, which may be of independent interest.
The \textit{$r$-dynamic choosability} of a graph $G$, written ${\rm ch}_r(G)$, is the least $k$ such that whenever each vertex is assigned a list of at least $k$ colors a proper coloring can be chosen from the lists so that every vertex $v$ has at least $\min\{d_G(v),r\}$ neighbors of distinct colors. Let ${\rm ch}(G)$ denote the choice number of $G$. In this paper, we prove ${\rm ch}_r(G)\leq (1+o(1)){\rm ch}(G)$ when $\frac{Δ(G)}{δ(G)}$ is bounded. We also show that there exists a constant $C$ such that for the random graph $G=G(n,p)$ with $\frac{2}{n}<p\leq \frac{1}{2}$, it holds that ${\rm…
We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying a given minimum degree condition and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. We prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains at least $\min\{δ(G), \lfloor n/3 \rfloor\}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$, where $C$ is a large enough constant. This is a perturbed version of an old result of Dirac. Our result is asymptotically optimal and answers a question of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RS…
The restricted hypercube-like graphs, variants of the hypercube, were proposed as desired interconnection networks of parallel systems. The matching preclusion number of a graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in the graph with neither perfect matchings nor almost perfect matchings. The fractional perfect matching preclusion and fractional strong perfect matching preclusion are generalizations of the concept matching preclusion. In this paper, we obtain fractional matching preclusion number and fractional strong matching preclusion numbers of restricted hypercube-like gra…
Our main result is that every graph $G$ on $n\ge 10^4r^3$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1 / 10^4 r^{3/2} ) n$ has a fractional $K_r$-decomposition. Combining this result with recent work of Barber, Kühn, Lo and Osthus leads to the best known minimum degree thresholds for exact (non-fractional) $F$-decompositions for a wide class of graphs~$F$ (including large cliques). For general $k$-uniform hypergraphs, we give a short argument which shows that there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1- c_k /r^{…
An edge switch is an operation which makes a local change in a graph while maintaining the degree of every vertex. We introduce a switch move, called a triangle switch, which creates or deletes at least one triangle. Specifically, a make move is a triangle switch which chooses a path $zwvxy$ of length 4 and replaces it by a triangle $vxwv$ and an edge $yz$, while a break move performs the reverse operation. We consider various Markov chains which perform random triangle switches, and assume that every possible make or break move has positive probability of being performed. Our first result is …
The optimality of the Erdős-Rado theorem for pairs is witnessed by the colouring $Δ_κ: [2^κ]^2 \rightarrow κ$ recording the least point of disagreement between two functions. This colouring has no monochromatic triangles or, more generally, odd cycles. We investigate a number of questions investigating the extent to which $Δ_κ$ is an \emph{extremal} such triangle-free or odd-cycle-free colouring. We begin by introducing the notion of $Δ$-regressive and almost $Δ$-regressive colourings and studying the structures that must appear as monochromatic subgraphs for such colourings. We also consider …
