A vertex set $D$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} (\emph{e.d.s.}\ for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The \emph{Efficient Domination} (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d.s.\ in $G$, is \NP-complete for various $H$-free bipartite graphs, e.g., Lu and Tang showed that ED is \NP-complete for chordal bipartite graphs and for planar bipartite graphs; actually, ED is \NP-complete even for planar bipartite graphs with vertex degree at most 3 and girth at least $g$ for every fixed $g$. Thus, ED is \NP-complete for $K_{1,4}$-free bipartite graphs and for $C_4$-free bipartite graphs.
In this paper, we show that ED can be solved in polynomial time for $S_{1,3,3}$-free bipartite graphs.

For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $D \subseteq V$ is called a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set of $G$, and every vertex in $D$ is within distance~$2$ of another vertex of~$D$. The \textsc{Minimum Semitotal Domination} problem is to find a semitotal dominating set of minimum cardinality. For a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ without any isolated vertex, a cosecure dominating set $D$ of $G$ satisfies the following two properties (i) $S$ is a dominating set of $G$, (ii) for every vertex $v \in S$ there exists a vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ such that $uv \in E$ and $(S \setminus \{v\}) \cup \{u\}$ is a dominating set of $G$. The minimum cardinality of a cosecure dominating set of $G$ is called cosecure domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{cs}(G)$. The Minimum Cosecure Domination problem is to find a cosecure dominating set of a graph $G$ of cardinality $γ_{cs}(G)$. The decision …
The greedy algorithm for approximating dominating sets is a simple method that is known to compute an $(\ln n+1)$-approximation of a minimum dominating set on any graph with $n$ vertices. We show that a small modification of the greedy algorithm can be used to compute an $O(t^2\cdot \ln k)$-approximation, where~$k$ is the size of a minimum dominating set, on graphs that exclude the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph.
In this paper we determine the exact values of the signed domination number, signed total domination number, and minus domination number of complete multipartite graphs, which substantially generalizes some previous results obtained for special subclasses of complete multipartite graphs such as cliques and complete bipartite graphs.
An efficient dominating set (or perfect code) in a graph is a set of vertices the closed neighborhoods of which partition the vertex set of the graph. The minimum weight efficient domination problem is the problem of finding an efficient dominating set of minimum weight in a given vertex-weighted graph; the maximum weight efficient domination problem is defined similarly. We develop a framework for solving the weighted efficient domination problems based on a reduction to the maximum weight independent set problem in the square of the input graph. Using this approach, we improve on several pre…

The minimum size of a secure connected dominating set of $G$ denoted by $ γ_{sc} (G)$, is called the secure connected domination number of $G$. Let $γ'_s(G)$ be the signed edge domination number of G. In 2006, Xu conjectured that: for any $2$-connected graph G of order $ n (n \geq 2),$ $γ'_s(G)\geq 1$. In this article we show that this conjecture is not true. More precisely, we show that for any positive integer $m$, there exists an $m$-connected graph $G$ such that $ γ'_s(G)\leq -\frac{m}{6}|V(G)|.$ Also for every two natural numbers $m$ and $n$, we determine $γ'_s(K_{m,n})$, where $K_{m,n}$ is the complete bipartite graph with part sizes $m$ and $n$.
A set $S \subseteq V$ is a dominating set in G if for every u \in V \ S, there exists $v \in S$ such that $(u,v) \in E$, i.e., $N[S] = V$. A dominating set $S$ is an Isolate Dominating Set} (IDS) if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ has at least one isolated vertex. It is known that Isolate Domination Decision problem (IDOM) is NP-complete for bipartite graphs. In this paper, we extend this by showing that the IDOM is NP-complete for split graphs and perfect elimination bipartite graphs, a subclass of bipartite graphs. A set $S \subseteq V$ is an independent set if G[S] has no edge. A set S \subsete…

Given a graph $G=(V(G), E(G))$, the size of a minimum dominating set, minimum paired dominating set, and a minimum total dominating set of a graph $G$ are denoted by $γ(G)$, $γ_{\rm pr}(G)$, and $γ_{t}(G)$, respectively. For a positive integer $k$, a $k$-packing in $G$ is a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that for every pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ in $S$, the distance between $u$ and $v$ is at least $k+1$. The $k$-packing number is the order of a largest $k$-packing and is denoted by $ρ_{k}(G)$. It is well known that $γ_{\rm pr}(G) \le 2γ(G)$. In this paper, we prove that it is NP-hard t…
In this paper we initialize the study of independent domination in directed graphs. We show that an independent dominating set of an orientation of a graph is also an independent dominating set of the underlying graph, but that the converse is not true in general. We then prove existence and uniqueness theorems for several classes of digraphs including orientations of complete graphs, paths, trees, DAGs, cycles, and bipartite graphs. We also provide the idomatic number for special cases of some of these families of digraphs.

Weighted independent domination is an NP-hard graph problem, which remains computationally intractable in many restricted graph classes. In particular, the problem is NP-hard in the classes of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. We strengthen these results by showing that the problem is NP-hard in a proper subclass of the intersection of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. On the other hand, we identify two new classes of graphs where the problem admits polynomial-time solutions.
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $D\subseteq V$ is called a \emph{disjunctive dominating set} of $G$ if for every vertex $v\in V\setminus D$, $v$ is either adjacent to a vertex of $D$ or has at least two vertices in $D$ at distance $2$ from it. The cardinality of a minimum disjunctive dominating set of $G$ is called the \emph{disjunctive domination number} of graph $G$, and is denoted by $γ_{2}^{d}(G)$. The \textsc{Minimum Disjunctive Domination Problem} (MDDP) is to find a disjunctive dominating set of cardinality $γ_{2}^{d}(G)$. Given a positive integer $k$ and a graph $G$, the \textsc{Disjuncti…

However, the computational complexity of the EDS problem is unknown for $P_6$-free graphs. In this paper, we show that the EDS problem can be solved in polynomial time …
We introduce the Maker-Breaker domination game, a two player game on a graph. At his turn, the first player, Dominator, select a vertex in order to dominate the graph while the other player, Staller, forbids a vertex to Dominator in order to prevent him to reach his goal. Both players play alternately without missing their turn. This game is a particular instance of the so-called Maker-Breaker games, that is studied here in a combinatorial context. In this paper, we first prove that deciding the winner of the Maker-Breaker domination game is PSPACE-complete, even for bipartite graphs and split…
A set $D\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set and the subgraph of $G$ induced by the open neighborhood of $D$ has no isolated vertex. Given a graph $G$, \textsc{Min-NTDS} is the problem of finding a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$ of minimum cardinality. The decision version of \textsc{Min-NTDS} is known to be \textsf{NP}-complete for bipartite graphs and chordal graphs. In this paper, we extend this \textsf{NP}-completeness result to undirected path graphs, chordal bipartite graphs, and planar graphs. We also…

A perfect Italian dominating function of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f : V \to \{0,1,2\}$ such that for every vertex $f(v) = 0$, it holds that $\sum_{u \in N(v)} f(u) = 2$, i.e., the weight of the labels assigned by $f$ to the neighbors of $v$ is exactly two. The weight of a perfect Italian function is the sum of the weights of the vertices. The perfect Italian domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ^p_I(G)$, is the minimum weight of any perfect Italian dominating function of $G$. While introducing the parameter, Haynes and Henning (Discrete Appl. Math. (2019), 164--177) also proposed the…
We show that there are polynomial-time algorithms to compute maximum independent sets in the categorical products of two cographs and two splitgraphs. The ultimate categorical independence ratio of a graph G is defined as lim_{k --> infty} α(G^k)/n^k. The ultimate categorical independence ratio is polynomial for cographs, permutation graphs, interval graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth and splitgraphs. When G is a planar graph of maximal degree three then alpha(G \times K_4) is NP-complete. We present a PTAS for the ultimate categorical independence ratio of planar graphs. We present an O^*(n^…
In this note, we consider the following problem: given a connected graph $G$, can we reduce the domination number of $G$ by using only one edge contraction? We show that the problem is polynomial-time solvable on $P_3+kP_2$-free graphs for any $k \geq 0$ which combined with results of [1,2] leads to a complexity dichotomy of the problem on $H$-free graphs.

A function f: V \rightarrow \{-1,0,1\} is a minus-domination function of a graph G=(V,E) if the values over the vertices in each closed neighborhood sum to a positive number. The weight of f is the sum of f(x) over all vertices x \in V. The minus-domination number γ^{-}(G) is the minimum weight over all minus-domination functions. The size of a minus domination is the number of vertices that are assigned 1. In this paper we show that the minus-domination problem is fixed-parameter tractable for d-degenerate graphs when parameterized by the size of the minus-dominating set and by d. The minus-d…
We show that the number of $k$-matching in a given undirected graph $G$ is equal to the number of perfect matching of the corresponding graph $G_k$ on an even number of vertices divided by a suitable factor. If $G$ is bipartite then one can construct a bipartite $G_k$. For bipartite graphs this result implies that the number of $k$-matching has a polynomial-time approximation algorithm. The above results are extended to permanents and hafnians of corresponding matrices.
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. If, in addition, $S$ is an independent set, then $S$ is an independent dominating set. The independent domination number $i(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of an independent dominating set in $G$. In 2013 Goddard and Henning [Discrete Math 313 (2013), 839--854] conjectured that if $G$ is a connected cubic graph of order $n$, then $i(G) \le \frac{3}{8}n$, except if $G$ is the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$ or the $5$-prism $C_5 \, \Box \, K_2$. A hypergraph is said to be $1$-Sperner if for every two hyperedges the smallest of their two set differences is of size one. We present several applications of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs and their structure to graphs. In particular, we consider the classical characterizations of threshold and domishold graphs and use them to obtain further characterizations of these classes in terms of $1$-Spernerness, thresholdness, and $2$-asummability of their vertex cover, clique, dominating set, and closed neighborhood hypergraphs. Furthermore, we apply a decomposition property of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs to …
