Weighted independent domination is an NP-hard graph problem, which remains computationally intractable in many restricted graph classes. In particular, the problem is NP-hard in the classes of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. We strengthen these results by showing that the problem is NP-hard in a proper subclass of the intersection of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. On the other hand, we identify two new classes of graphs where the problem admits polynomial-time solutions.
An efficient dominating set (or perfect code) in a graph is a set of vertices the closed neighborhoods of which partition the vertex set of the graph. The minimum weight efficient domination problem is the problem of finding an efficient dominating set of minimum weight in a given vertex-weighted graph; the maximum weight efficient domination problem is defined similarly. We develop a framework for solving the weighted efficient domination problems based on a reduction to the maximum weight independent set problem in the square of the input graph. Using this approach, we improve on several pre…
In a finite undirected graph $G=(V,E)$, a vertex $v \in V$ {\em dominates} itself and its neighbors. A vertex set $D \subseteq V$ in $G$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} ({\em e.d.} for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The {\em Efficient Domination} (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d. in $G$, is known to be NP-complete for $P_7$-free graphs but solvable in polynomial time for $P_5$-free graphs. Very recently, it has been shown by Lokshtanov et al. and independently by Mosca that ED is solvable in polynomial time for $P_6$-fre…
Let G be a finite undirected graph. A vertex dominates itself and all its neighbors in G. A vertex set D is an efficient dominating set (e.d. for short) of G if every vertex of G is dominated by exactly one vertex of D. The Efficient Domination (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d. in G, is known to be NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes. In particular, the ED problem remains NP-complete for 2P3-free graphs and thus for P7-free graphs. We show that the weighted version of the problem (abbreviated WED) is solvable in polynomial time on various subclasses of 2P3-fr…

We are proposing two greedy and a new linear programming based approximation algorithm for the total positive influence dominating set problem in weighted networks. Applications of this problem in weighted settings include finding: a minimum cost set of nodes to broadcast a message in social networks, such that each node has majority of neighbours broadcasting that message; a maximum trusted set in bitcoin network; an optimal set of hosts when running distributed apps etc. Extensive experiments on different generated and real networks highlight advantages and potential issues for each algorith…
Given a positive integer $k$, a $k$-dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. A total $k$-dominating set, also known as a $k$-tuple total dominating set, is a set of vertices such that every vertex of the graph has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. The problems of finding the minimum size of a $k$-dominating, respectively total $k$-dominating set, in a given graph, are referred to as $k$-domination, respectively total $k$-domination. These generalizations of the classical domination and total domination prob…
In a graph $G$, an efficient dominating set is a subset $D$ of vertices such that $D$ is an independent set and each vertex outside $D$ has exactly one neighbor in $D$. The Minimum Weight Efficient Dominating Set (Min-WED) problem asks for an efficient dominating set of total minimum weight in a given vertex-weighted graph; the Maximum Weight Efficient Dominating Set (Max-WED) problem is defined similarly. The Min-WED/Max-WED is known to be $NP$-complete for $P_7$-free graphs, and is known to be polynomial time solvable for $P_5$-free graphs. However, the computational complexity of the Min-WE…
In this paper we initialize the study of independent domination in directed graphs. We show that an independent dominating set of an orientation of a graph is also an independent dominating set of the underlying graph, but that the converse is not true in general. We then prove existence and uniqueness theorems for several classes of digraphs including orientations of complete graphs, paths, trees, DAGs, cycles, and bipartite graphs. We also provide the idomatic number for special cases of some of these families of digraphs.
Given a graph $G = (V,E)$, a vertex $u \in V$ ve-dominates all edges incident to any vertex of $N_G[u]$. A set $S \subseteq V$ is a ve-dominating set if for all edges $e\in E$, there exists a vertex $u \in S$ such that $u$ ve-dominates $e$. Lewis [Ph.D. thesis, 2007] proposed a linear time algorithm for ve-domination problem for trees. In this paper, first we have constructed an example where the proposed algorithm fails. Then we have proposed a linear time algorithm for ve-domination problem in block graphs, which is a superclass of trees. We have also proved that finding minimum ve-dominatin…
We revisit the problem of determining the independent domination number in hypercubes for which the known upper bound is still not tight for general dimensions. We present here a constructive method to build an independent dominating set $S_n$ for the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$, where $n=2p+1$, $p$ being a positive integer $\ge 1$, provided an independent dominating set $S_p$ for the $p$-dimensional hypercube $Q_p$, is known. The procedure also computes the minimum independent dominating set for all $n=2^k-1$, $k>1$. Finally, we establish that the independent domination number $α_n\leq 3 …
The linear complementarity problem is a continuous optimization problem that generalizes convex quadratic programming, Nash equilibria of bimatrix games and several such problems. This paper presents a continuous optimization formulation for the weighted independence number of a graph by characterizing it as the maximum weighted $\ell_1$ norm over the solution set of a linear complementarity problem (LCP). The minimum $\ell_1$ norm of solutions of this LCP is a lower bound on the independent domination number of the graph. Unlike the case of the maximum $\ell_1$ norm, this lower bound is in ge…
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1,2 \}$ is the Italian dominating function of $G$ if $f$ satisfies $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u) \geq 2$ when $f(v)=0$. Denote $w(f)=\sum_{v \in V}f(v)$ as the weight of $f$. Let $V_i=\{v:f(v)=i\},i=0,1,2$, we call $f$ the independent Italian dominating function if $V_1 \cup V_2$ is an independent set. The independent Italian domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of independent Italian dominating function $f$, denoted by $i_{I}(G)$. We equivalently transform the independent domination problem of the connected block graph $G$ to the induced indepe…
A vertex set $D$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} (\emph{e.d.s.}\ for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. Here we focus on $H$-free bipartite graphs: We show that (weighted) ED can be solved in polynomial time for $H$-free bipartite graphs when…
In this paper, we consider various types of domination vertex critical graphs, including total domination vertex critical graphs, independent domination vertex critical graphs and connected domination vertex critical graphs. We provide upper bounds on the diameter of them, two of which are sharp.
We show that there are polynomial-time algorithms to compute maximum independent sets in the categorical products of two cographs and two splitgraphs. The ultimate categorical independence ratio of a graph G is defined as lim_{k --> infty} α(G^k)/n^k. The ultimate categorical independence ratio is polynomial for cographs, permutation graphs, interval graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth and splitgraphs. When G is a planar graph of maximal degree three then alpha(G \times K_4) is NP-complete. We present a PTAS for the ultimate categorical independence ratio of planar graphs. We present an O^*(n^…
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. If, in addition, $S$ is an independent set, then $S$ is an independent dominating set. The independent domination number $i(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of an independent dominating set in $G$. In 2013 Goddard and Henning [Discrete Math 313 (2013), 839--854] conjectured that if $G$ is a connected cubic graph of order $n$, then $i(G) \le \frac{3}{8}n$, except if $G$ is the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$ or the $5$-prism $C_5 \, \Box \, K_2$. Further they construct two…

Let G be a graph. The independence-domination number is the maximum over all independent sets I in G of the minimal number of vertices needed to dominate I. In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of independence domination for graphs in several graph classes related to cographs. We present an exact exponential algorithm. We also present a PTAS for planar graphs.
A vertex set $D$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is an efficient dominating set (e.d.s. for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. A standard reduction from the \NP-complete Exact Cover problem shows that ED is \NP-complete for a very special subclass of cho…
A set $S \subseteq V$ is a dominating set in G if for every u \in V \ S, there exists $v \in S$ such that $(u,v) \in E$, i.e., $N[S] = V$. A dominating set $S$ is an Isolate Dominating Set} (IDS) if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ has at least one isolated vertex. It is known that Isolate Domination Decision problem (IDOM) is NP-complete for bipartite graphs. In this paper, we extend this by showing that the IDOM is NP-complete for split graphs and perfect elimination bipartite graphs, a subclass of bipartite graphs. A set $S \subseteq V$ is an independent set if G[S] has no edge. A set S \subsete…
Given a graph $G = (V,E)$, a \emph{perfect dominating set} is a subset of vertices $V' \subseteq V(G)$ such that each vertex $v \in V(G)\setminus V'$ is dominated by exactly one vertex $v' \in V'$. An \emph{efficient dominating set} is a perfect dominating set $V'$ where $V'$ is also an independent set. These problems are usually posed in terms of edges instead of vertices. Both problems, either for the vertex or edge variant, remains NP-Hard, even when restricted to certain graphs families. We study both variants of the problems for the circular-arc graphs, and show efficient algorithms for a…
In this paper, we study independent domination in directed graphs, which was recently introduced by Cary, Cary, and Prabhu. We provide a short, algorithmic proof that all directed acyclic graphs contain an independent dominating set. Using linear algebraic tools, we prove that any strongly connected graph with even period has at least two independent dominating sets, generalizing several of the results of Cary, Cary, and Prabhu. We prove that determining the period of the graph is not sufficient to determine the existence of an independent dominating set by constructing a few examples of infin…
The concept of generalized domination unifies well-known variants of domination-like and independence problems, such as Dominating Set, Independent Set, Perfect Code, etc. A generalized domination (also called $[σ,ρ]$-Dominating Set}) problem consists in finding a subset of vertices in a graph such that every vertex is satisfied with respect to two given sets of constraints $σ$ and $ρ$. Very few problems are known not to be FPT when parameterized by tree-width, as usually this restriction allows one to write efficient algorithms to solve the considered problems. The main result of this article…
In a graph $G$, an {\it efficient dominating set} is a subset $D$ of vertices such that $D$ is an independent set and each vertex outside $D$ has exactly one neighbor in $D$. The {\textsc{Efficient Dominating Set}} problem (EDS) asks for the existence of an efficient dominating set in a given graph $G$. The EDS is known to be $NP$-complete for $P_7$-free graphs, and is known to be polynomial time solvable for $P_5$-free graphs. However, the computational complexity of the EDS problem is unknown for $P_6$-free graphs. In this paper, we show that the EDS problem can be solved in polynomial time …
We generalize the family of $(σ, ρ)$-problems and locally checkable vertex partition problems to their distance versions, which naturally captures well-known problems such as distance-$r$ dominating set and distance-$r$ independent set. We show that these distance problems are XP parameterized by the structural parameter mim-width, and hence polynomial on graph classes where mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, such as $k$-trapezoid graphs, Dilworth $k$-graphs, (circular) permutation graphs, interval graphs and their complements, convex graphs and their complements, $k$-polygon graphs,…
We consider a generic algorithmic paradigm that we call progressive exploration, which can be used to develop simple and efficient parameterized graph algorithms. We identify two model-theoretic properties that lead to efficient progressive algorithms, namely variants of the Helly property and stability. We demonstrate our approach by giving linear-time fixed-parameter algorithms for the distance-r dominating set problem (parameterized by the solution size) in a wide variety of restricted graph classes, such as powers of nowhere dense classes, map graphs, and (for $r=1$) biclique-free graphs. …
