Problems involving control of large ensmebles of structurally identical dynamical systems, called \emph{ensemble control}, arise in numerous scientific areas from quantum control and robotics to brain medicine. In many of such applications, control can only be implemented at the population level, i.e., through broadcasting an input signal to all the systems in the population, and this new control paradigm challenges the classical systems theory. In recent years, considerable efforts have been made to investigate controllability properties of ensemble systems, and most works emphasized on linear and some forms of bilinear and nonlinear ensemble systems. In this paper, we study controllability of a broad class of bilinear ensemble systems defined on semisimple Lie groups, for which we define the notion of ensemble controllability through a Riemannian structure of the state space Lie group. Leveraging the Cartan decomposition of semisimple Lie algebras in representation theory, we develop a \emph{covering method} that decomposes the state space Lie group into a collection of Lie subgroups generating the Lie group, which enables the determination of ensemble controllability by controllability of the subsystems evolving on these Lie subgroups. Using the covering method, we show the equivalence between ensemble and classical controllability, i.e., controllability of each individual system in the ensemble implies ensemble controllability, for bilinear ensemble systems evolving on semisimple Lie groups. This equivalence makes the examination of controllability for infinite-dimensional ensemble systems as tractable as for a finite-dimensional single system.
We study possibilities to control an ensemble (a parameterized family) of nonlinear control systems by a single parameter-independent control. Proceeding by Lie algebraic methods we establish genericity of exact controllability property for finite ensembles, prove sufficient approximate controllability condition for a model problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and provide a variant of Rashevsky-Chow theorem for approximate controllability of control-linear ensembles.
In this article, we investigate the problem of simultaneously steering an uncountable family of finite dimensional time-varying linear systems. We call this class of control problems Ensemble Control, a notion coming from the study of spin dynamics in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and imaging (MRI). This subject involves controlling a continuum of parameterized dynamical systems with the same open-loop control input. From a viewpoint of mathematical control theory, this class of problems is challenging because it requires steering a continuum of dynamical systems between points…
In this paper, we consider the problem of steering a family of independent, structurally identical, finite-dimensional stochastic linear systems with variation in system parameters between initial and target states of interest by using an open-loop control function. Our exploration of this class of control problems, which falls under the rising subject of ensemble control, is motivated by pulse design problems in quantum control. Here we extend the concept of ensemble control to stochastic systems with additive diffusion and jump processes, which we model using Brownian motion and Poisson coun…
Synchronization of oscillations is a phenomenon prevalent in natural, social, and engineering systems. Controlling synchronization of oscillating systems is motivated by a wide range of applications from neurological treatment of Parkinson's disease to the design of neurocomputers. In this article, we study the control of an ensemble of uncoupled neuron oscillators described by phase models. We examine controllability of such a neuron ensemble for various phase models and, furthermore, study the related optimal control problems. In particular, by employing Pontryagin's maximum principle, we an…
We investigate the task of controlling ensembles of initial and terminal state vectors of parameter-dependent linear systems by applying parameter-independent open loop controls. Necessary, as well as sufficient, conditions for ensemble controllability are established, using tools from complex approximation theory. For real analytic families of linear systems it is shown that ensemble controllability holds only for systems with at most two independent parameters. We apply the results to networks of linear systems and address the question of open-loop robust synchronization.
Optimal control of bilinear systems has been a well-studied subject in the area of mathematical control. However, techniques for solving emerging optimal control problems involving an ensemble of structurally identical bilinear systems are underdeveloped. In this work, we develop an iterative method to effectively and systematically solve these challenging optimal ensemble control problems, in which the bilinear ensemble system is represented as a time-varying linear ensemble system at each iteration and the optimal ensemble control law is then obtained by the singular value expansion of the i…
In this paper, we tackle the long-standing challenges of ensemble control analysis and design using a convex-geometric approach in a Hilbert space setting. Specifically, we formulate the control of linear ensemble systems as a convex feasibility problem in a Hilbert space, which can be solved by iterative weighted projections. Such a non-trivial geometric interpretation not only enables a systematic design principle for constructing feasible, optimal, and constrained ensemble control signals, but also makes it possible for numerical examination of ensemble reachability and controllability. Fur…
In this paper, we study the control of a class of time-invariant linear ensemble systems whose natural dynamics are linear in the system parameter. This class of ensemble control systems arises from practical engineering and physical applications, such as transport of quantum particles and control of uncertain harmonic systems. We establish explicit algebraic criterions to examine controllability of such ensemble systems. Our derivation is based on the notion of polynomial approximation, where the elements of the reachable set of the ensemble system are represented in polynomials of the system…
Recent years have witnessed a wave of research activities in systems science toward the study of population systems. The driving force behind this shift was geared by numerous emerging and ever-changing technologies in life and physical sciences and engineering, from neuroscience, biology, and quantum physics to robotics, where many control-enabled applications involve manipulating a large ensemble of structurally identical dynamic units, or agents. Analyzing fundamental properties of ensemble control systems in turn plays a foundational and critical role in enabling and, further, advancing th…
Controlling a large population, in the limit, a continuum, of structurally identical dynamical systems with parametric variations is a pervasive task in diverse applications in science and engineering. However, the severely underactuated nature and the inability to avail comprehensive state feedback information of such ensemble systems raise significant challenges in analysis and design of ensemble systems. In this paper, we propose a moment-based ensemble control framework, which incorporates and expands the method of moments in probability theory to control theory. In particular, we establis…
Optimal control of bilinear systems has been a well-studied subject in the areas of mathematical and computational optimal control. However, effective methods for solving emerging optimal control problems involving an ensemble of deterministic or stochastic bilinear systems are underdeveloped. These burgeoning problems arise in diverse applications from quantum control and molecular imaging to neuroscience. In this work, we develop an iterative method to find optimal controls for an inhomogeneous bilinear ensemble system with free-endpoint conditions. The central idea is to represent the bilin…
Ensemble control, an emerging research field focusing on the study of large populations of dynamical systems, has demonstrated great potential in numerous scientific and practical applications. Striking examples include pulse design for exciting spin ensembles in quantum physics, neurostimulation for relieving neurological disorder symptoms, and path planning for steering robot swarms. However, the control targets in such applications are generally large-scale complex and severely underactuated ensemble systems, research into which stretches the capability of techniques in classical control an…
We propose in this paper a gradient-type dynamical system to solve the problem of maximizing quantum observables for finite dimensional closed quantum ensembles governed by the controlled Liouville-von Neumann equation. The asymptotic behavior is analyzed: we show that under the regularity assumption on the controls the dynamical system almost always converges to a solution of the maximization problem; we also detail the difficulties related to the occurrence of singular controls.

In this paper, we study uniform ensemble controllability (UEC) of linear ensemble systems defined in an infinite-dimensional space through finite-dimensional settings. Specifically, with the help of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem for modules, we provide an algebraic framework for examining UEC of linear ensemble systems with diagonalizable drift vector fields through checking the controllability of finite-dimensional subsystems in the ensemble. The new framework renders a novel concept of ensemble controllability matrix, which rank-condition serves as a sufficient and necessary condition for UE…
We address an open problem in ensemble control: Whether there exist controllable linear ensemble systems over multi-dimensional parameterization spaces? We provide a negative result: Any real-analytic linear ensemble system is not $\mathrm{L}^p$-controllable, for $2\leq p \leq \infty$, if its parameterization space contains an open set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d \geq 2$.
In the paper, we introduce and address the problem of structural averaged controllability for linear ensemble systems. We provide examples highlighting the differences between this problem and others. In particular, we show that structural averaged controllability is strictly weaker than structural controllability for single (or ensembles of) linear systems. We establish a set of necessary or sufficient conditions for sparsity patterns to be structurally averaged controllable.
We study the controlled dynamics of the {\it ensembles of points} of a Riemannian manifold $M$. Parameterized ensemble of points of $M$ is the image of a continuous map $γ:Θ\to M$, where $Θ$ is a compact set of parameters. The dynamics of ensembles is defined by the action $γ(θ) \mapsto P_t(γ(θ))$ of the semigroup of diffeomorphisms $P_t:M \to M, \ t \in \mathbb{R}$, generated by the controlled equation $\dot{x}=f(x,u(t))$ on $M$. Therefore any control system on $M$ defines a control system on (generally infinite-dimensional) space $\mathcal{E}_Θ(M)$ of the ensembles of points. We wish to esta…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of problems of optimal control of ensembles governed by the Liouville (or continuity) equation. The formulation and study of these problems have been put forward in recent years by R.W. Brockett, with the motivation that ensemble control may provide a more general and robust control framework. Following Brockett's formulation of ensemble control, a Liouville equation with unbounded drift function, and a class of cost functionals that include tracking of ensembles and different control costs is considered. For the theoretical investigation of the resulting …
This note presents a sufficient condition for partial approximate ensemble controllability of a set of bilinear conservative quantum systems in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The proof relies on classical geometric and averaging control techniques applied on finite dimensional approximation of the infinite dimensional system. The results are illustrated with the planar rotation of a linear molecule.
In this paper we are concerned with the stabilizability to an equilibrium point of an ensemble of non interacting half-spins. We assume that the spins are immersed in a static magnetic field, with dispersion in the Larmor frequency, and are controlled by a time varying transverse field. Our goal is to steer the whole ensemble to the uniform "down" position. Two cases are addressed: for a finite ensemble of spins, we provide a control function (in feedback form) that asymptotically stabilizes the ensemble in the "down" position, generically with respect to the initial condition. For an ensemble…
In this paper we extend the results on controllability of linear systems obtained in "Controllability of linear systems on solvable Lie groups", from solvable Lie groups to Lie groups with finite semisimple center.
In this paper, we derive the minimum-energy periodic control that entrains an ensemble of structurally similar neural oscillators to a desired frequency. The state space representation of a nominal oscillator is reduced to a phase model by computing its limit cycle and phase response curve, from which the optimal control is derived by using formal averaging and the calculus of variations. We focus on the case of a 1:1 entrainment ratio, and introduce a numerical method for approximating the optimal controls. The method is applied to asymptotically control the spiking frequency of neural oscill…
We study one-parametric perturbations of finite dimensional real Hamiltonians depending on two controls, and we show that generically in the space of Hamiltonians, conical intersections of eigenvalues can degenerate into semi-conical intersections of eigenvalues. Then, through the use of normal forms, we study the problem of ensemble controllability between the eigenstates of a generic Hamiltonian.
In this paper we explicitly calculate the control sets associated with a linear control system on the two dimensional solvable Lie group. We show that a linear control system of such kind admits exactly one control set or infinite control sets depending on some algebraic conditions.
We study the controllability of the Bloch equation, for an ensemble of non interacting half-spins, in a static magnetic field, with dispersion in the Larmor frequency. This system may be seen as a prototype for infinite dimensional bilinear systems with continuous spectrum, whose controllability is not well understood. We provide several mathematical answers, with discrimination between approximate and exact controllability, and between finite time or infinite time controllability: this system is not exactly controllable in finite time $T$ with bounded controls in $L^2(0,T)$, but it is approxi…
The motivation behind mathematically modeling the human operator is to help explain the response characteristics of the complex dynamical system including the human manual controller. In this paper, we present two approaches to human operator modeling: classical linear control approach and modern nonlinear control approach. The latter one is formalized using both fixed and adaptive Lie-Derivative based controllers. Keywords: Human operator, linear control, nonlinear control, Lie derivative operator
The field of optimal control typically requires the assumption of perfect knowledge of the system one desires to control, which is an unrealistic assumption for biological systems, or networks, typically affected by high levels of uncertainty. Here, we investigate the minimum energy control of network ensembles, which may take one of a finite number of possible realizations. We ensure the controller derived can perform the desired control with a tunable amount of accuracy and we study how the control energy and the overall control cost scale with the number of possible realizations. We verify …
In this paper we show that a complete characterization of the controllability property for linear control system on three-dimensional solvable nonnilpotent Lie groups is possible by the LARC and the knowledge of the eigenvalues of the derivation associated with the drift of the system.
In this paper we study the main properties of control sets with nonempty interior of linear control systems on semisimple Lie groups. We show that, unlike the solvable case, linear control systems on semisimple Lie groups may have more than one control set with nonempty interior and that they are contained in right translations of the one around the identity.
This work develops a new multifidelity ensemble Kalman filter (MFEnKF) algorithm based on linear control variate framework. The approach allows for rigorous multifidelity extensions of the EnKF, where the uncertainty in coarser fidelities in the hierarchy of models represent control variates for the uncertainty in finer fidelities. Small ensembles of high fidelity model runs are complemented by larger ensembles of cheaper, lower fidelity runs, to obtain much improved analyses at only small additional computational costs. We investigate the use of reduced order models as coarse fidelity control…
Linear systems on Lie groups are a natural generalization of linear system on Euclidian spaces. For such systems, this paper studies controllability by taking in consideration the eigenvalues of an associated derivation D. When the state space is a solvable connected Lie group, controllability of the systems is guaranteed if the reachable set of the neutral element is open and the derivation D has only pure imaginary eigenvalues. For bounded systems on nilpotent Lie groups such conditions are also necessary.
The paper presents the geometry of Lie algebroids and its applications to optimal control. The first part deals with the theory of Lie algebroids, connections on Lie algebroids and dynamical systems defined on Lie algebroids (mainly Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems). In the second part we use the framework of Lie algebroids in the study of distributional systems (drift less control affine systems) with holonomic or nonholonomic distributions.
We consider an optimal control problem for a system of local continuity equations on a space of probability measures. Such systems can be viewed as macroscopic models of ensembles of non-interacting particles or homotypic individuals, representing several different ``populations''. For the stated problem, we propose a necessary optimality condition, which involves feedback controls inherent to the extremal structure, designed via the standard Pontryagin's Maximum Principle conditions. This optimality condition admits a realization as an iterative algorithm for optimal control. As a motivating …
This paper considers control systems defined on Lie algebroids. After deriving basic controllability tests for general control systems, we specialize our discussion to the class of mechanical control systems on Lie algebroids. This class of systems includes mechanical systems subject to holonomic and nonholonomic constraints, mechanical systems with symmetry and mechanical systems evolving on semidirect products. We introduce the notions of linear connection, symmetric product and geodesically invariant subbundle on a Lie algebroid. We present appropriate tests for various notions of accessibi…
