In this article we summarize our efforts in simulating Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter fields transforming under the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group. In the context of composite Higgs scenarios, gauge theories with mixed representation fields have been suggested to describe the fundamental interactions well beyond the electroweak unification scale, and they are also closely related to supersymmetric QCD. In addition, they are studied as deformations of theories with pure adjoint matter in the context of adiabatic continuity. We provide some first results for bare parameter tuning and interdependence of the two representations. We also investigate how the chiral symmetry breaking or a conformal scenario can be realized and checked in such theories.
Gauge theories with fermions in adjoint and fundamental representations are relevant for many different applications including composite Higgs models and general aspects of the confinement problem. We present first results from simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation and one adjoint flavor. In this context, we also discuss applications towards simulations of supersymmetric QCD.
Large N gauge theories with adjoint matter can be numerically studied using lattice techniques. Eguchi-Kawai reductions holds for this theory and one can reduce the lattice model to a single site. Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm can be used to simulate this model. One can either perform an exact computation of the "fermionic force" or use pseudo fermions as part of the HMC algorithm. The former algorithm is slower than the latter but has the advantage that one can work with any real number for the fermion flavor. Some results using both algorithms will be presented.
We prove an equivalence, in the large N limit, between certain U(N) gauge theories containing adjoint representation matter fields and their orbifold projections. Lattice regularization is used to provide a non-perturbative definition of these theories; our proof applies in the strong coupling, large mass phase of the theories. Equivalence is demonstrated by constructing and comparing the loop equations for a parent theory and its orbifold projections. Loop equations for both expectation values of single-trace observables, and for connected correlators of such observables, are considered; henc…
We consider the leading-order expression at weak-coupling for a single-site large-N gauge theory coupled to adjoint fermions. We study the case of overlap and wilson fermions. We extend the theory to real values of the number of fermion flavors and restrict ourselves to asymptotically free theories. Using a four-dimensional density function for the distribution of the eigenvalues of the link variables, we show that it is possible to recover the infinite-volume continuum limit for a certain range of fermion flavors if we use fermions with a bare mass of zero. Our use of the four-dimensional den…
We investigated SU(3) lattice gauge theory with a fundamental and adjoint plaquette term in the action. The purpose is to test whether the choice of a negative adjoint coupling can reduce lattice artefacts and improve the scaling b ehaviour. To this end, we have studied the finite temperature phase transition, the static potential and the mass of the 0^{++} glueball. We found that indeed the lattice artefacts in e.g. m_{0^{++}}/T_c can be reduced considerably compared with the pure Wilson (fundamental) gauge action at the same lattice spacing.
We study gauge dependence of the recently suggested definition of the singlet and adjoint potentials in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find that in the (time local) maximal tree axial gauge the singlet potential obtained from the gauge dependent correlator ${Tr} L(x)L^\dagger(y)$ differs from that computed in the Coulomb gauge. In the generalized Coulomb gauge we find the range of the parameter values in which the singlet potential differs from that in the Coulomb gauge.
We use a single site lattice in four dimensions to study the scaling of large N Yang-Mills field coupled to a single massless Dirac fermion in the adjoint representation. We use the location of the strong to weak coupling transition defined through the eigenvalues of the folded Wilson loop operator to set a scale. We do not observe perturbative scaling in the region studied in this paper. Instead, we observe that the scale changes very slowly with the bare coupling. The lowest eigenvalue of the overlap Dirac operator is another scale that shows similar behavior as a function of the lattice cou…
We present a perturbative calculation of the improvement coefficients of SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint representation Wilson-clover fermions and using Schrodinger functional boundary conditions. The computation of the boundary improvement terms is necessary for the full O(a) improvement. With two flavours of adjoint representation fermions this theory is called Minimal Walking Technicolor model.
Expansions of the Wilson determinant in lattice QCD with quarks produce gauge action terms which shift the coupling constant of the fundamental representation plaquette action and induce an adjoint representation plaquette action. We study the magnitude of these induced couplings with two flavors of Wilson fermions. We utilize a microcanonical demon method, which allows us to measure the induced couplings directly from gauge configurations generated by full fermionic simulations.
We review our efforts in investigating gauge theories with fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group by means of numerical simulations. These theories have applications in possible extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, being a core part of supersymmetric gauge theories. They also play an important role in uncovering fundamental properties of strongly interacting theories due to distinct features, such as a substantially different phase diagram.
We study the four-dimensional SU(3) gauge model with a fundamental and an adjoint plaquette term in the action. We investigate whether corrections to scaling can be reduced by using a negative value of the adjoint coupling. To this end, we have studied the finite temperature phase transition, the static potential and the mass of the 0^{++} glueball. In order to compute these quantities we have implemented variance reduced estimators that have been proposed recently. Corrections to scaling are analysed in dimensionless combinations such as T_c/\sqrtσ and m_{0^{++}}/T_c. We find that indeed the …
We study propagators of the lattice 3d adjoint Higgs model, considered as an effective theory of 4d SU(2) gauge theory at high temperature. The propagators are calculated in so-called lambda-gauges. From the long distance behaviour of the propagators we extract the screening masses. It is shown that the pole masses extracted from the propagators agree well with the screening masses obtained recently in finite temperature SU(2) theory. The gauge dependence of the screening masses is also discussed.
We show how zero-modes and quasi-zero-modes of the Dirac operator in the adjoint representation can be used to construct an estimate of the action density distribution of a pure gauge field theory, which is less sensitive to the ultraviolet fluctuations of the field. This can be used to trace the topological structures present in the vacuum. The construction relies on the special properties satisfied by the supersymmetric zero-modes.
We consider three-dimensional lattice SU($N_c$) gauge theories with multiflavor ($N_f>1$) scalar fields in the adjoint representation. We investigate their phase diagram, identify the different Higgs phases with their gauge-symmetry pattern, and determine the nature of the transition lines. In particular, we study the role played by the quartic scalar potential and by the gauge-group representation in determining the Higgs phases and the global and gauge symmetry-breaking patterns characterizing the different transitions. The general arguments are confirmed by numerical analyses of Monte Carlo…
We measure the evolution of the coupling constant using the Schroedinger functional method in the lattice formulation of SU(2) gauge theory with two massless Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. We observe strong evidence for an infrared fixed point, where the theory becomes conformal. We measure the continuum beta-function and the coupling constant as a function of the energy scale.
We consider a single site large N gauge theory coupled to adjoint fermions at weak coupling. We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the link variables using a four-dimensional density function. We show that it is possible to recover the infinite-volume continuum limit for a certain range of fermion flavors if we use fermions with a bare mass of zero.
The research of strongly coupled beyond-the-standard-model theories has generated significant interest in non-abelian gauge field theories with different number of fermions in different representations. Motivated by the increased interest to various technicolor scenarios, we study the non-perturbative improvement of the Wilson-clover action with SU(2) gauge fields and 2 flavors of fermions in the fundamental and adjoint representations. The Sheikholeslami-Wohlert coefficients are fixed using Schroedinger functional boundary conditions. The adjoint representation theory is a candidate for a "mi…
We briefly review the 1+1-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory minimally coupled to an adjoint scalar, based upon a dimensional reduction of 2+1-dimensional pure gauge theory, which approximates the dynamics of the transversely polarized gluon. The lightest glueball states are investigated non-perturbatively using light-front quantisation in the large-N limit a la 't Hooft, and the physical meaning of the results elucidated. Comparison is made with recent lattice Monte Carlo data for 3-dimensional quenched QCD.
We propose to induce QCD by fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group SU(N_c) on the lattice. We consider various types of lattice fermions: chiral, Kogut--Susskind and Wilson ones. Using the mean field method we show that a first order large-N phase transition occurs with decreasing fermion mass. We conclude, therefore, that adjoint fermions induce QCD. We draw the same conclusion for the adjoint scalar or fermion models at large number of flavors N_f when they induce a single-plaquette lattice gauge theory. We find an exact strong coupling solution for the adjoint fermion mod…
Using improved mean field and strong coupling expansions we re-analyse the bulk phase diagram of the fundamental-adjoint action of the SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory. We find that the qualitative features of the bulk phase diagram are robust and unchanged by the inclusion of higher order terms. On the other hand, some of the quantitative features, such as the location of the endpoint of the line of bulk phase transitions, seem to be strongly dependent on the higher terms of the strong coupling expansion.
We present preliminary results of lattice simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation. This theory has recently attracted considerable attention because it might possess an infrared fixed point (or an almost-fixed-point), and hence be a candidate for a walking technicolor theory. In this work we study the particle spectrum of the theory, and compare it with more familiar spectrum of the theory with SU(2) gauge fields and two flavors of fundamental representation fermions.
We present a major update on our investigations of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation on the lattice. In particular we consider larger volumes, as well as four different values of the gauge coupling. We provide results for the spectrum including gluonic, fermionic, and hybrid observables, Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number. These data confirm that the theory is close to the lower boundary of the conformal window for adjoint fermions. Our investigations provide important insights regarding the re…
We study SU(2) gauge theory with two fermion flavors in the adjoint representation. Using a clover improved HEX smeared action and the gradient flow running coupling allows us to simulate with larger lattice size than before. We find an infrared fixed point after a continuum extrapolation in the range $4.5 \lesssim g^{*2} \lesssim 5$. We also measure the mass anomalous dimension and find the value $ 0.25 \lesssim γ^* \lesssim 0.28 $ at the fixed point.
We analyze the finite temperature phase diagram of QCD with fermions in the adjoint representation. The simulations performed with four dynamical Majorana fermions, which is equivalent to two Dirac fermions, show that the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions occur at two distinct temperatures, $T_{\rm chiral} \simeq 6.65 T_{\rm deconf}$. While the deconfinement transition is first order we find evidence for a continuous chiral transition. We also present potentials for $T<T_{\rm deconf}$ and $T_{\rm deconf}<T< T_{\rm chiral}$ both for fundamental and adjoint fermion-antifermion pairs.
The behavior of the adjoint Wilson line in finite-temperature, $SU(2)$, lattice gauge theory is discussed. The expectation value of the line and the associated excess free energy reveal the response of the finite-temperature gauge field to the presence of an adjoint source. The value of the adjoint line at the critical point of the deconfining phase transition is highlighted. This is not calculable in weak or strong coupling. It receives contributions from all scales and is nonanalytic at the critical point. We determine the general form of the free energy. It includes a linearly divergent ter…
Non-Abelian gauge theories with fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group (AdjQCD) are a fundamental ingredient of many models that describe the physics beyond the Standard Model. Two relevant examples are N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and Minimal Walking Technicolor, which are gauge theories coupled to one adjoint Majorana and two adjoint Dirac fermions, respectively. While confinement is a property of N=1 SYM, Minimal Walking Technicolor is expected to be infrared conformal. We study the propagators of ghost and gluon fields in the Landau gauge to co…
I discuss the infrared behavior of the SU(3) gauge model with 12 fundamental fermions. Using a Monte Carlo renormalization group technique I investigate the fixed point structure in the chiral limit and show that this system has an infrared fixed point and consequently conformal infrared dynamics. I am able to reach the FP by using a new analysis method for the 2-lattice matching MCRG technique that significantly reduces finite volume effects and by choosing a lattice action that avoids a spurious ultraviolet fixed point created by strong coupling lattice artifacts.
For SU(2) lattice gauge theory with the fundamental-adjoint action an efficient heat-bath algorithm is not known so that one had to rely on Metropolis simulations supplemented by overrelaxation. Implementing a novel biased Metropolis-heat-bath algorithm for this model, we find improvement factors in the range 1.45 to 2.06 over conventionally optimized Metropolis simulations. If one optimizes further with respect to additional overrelaxation sweeps, the improvement factors are found in the range 1.3 to 1.8.
We propose gauging matrix models of string theory to eliminate unwanted non-singlet states. To this end we perform a discretised light-cone quantisation of large N gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions, with scalar or fermionic matter fields transforming in the adjoint representation of SU(N). The entire spectrum consists of bosonic and fermionic closed-string excitations, which are free as N tends to infinity. We analyze the general features of such bound states as a function of the cut-off and the gauge coupling, obtaining good convergence for the case of adjoint fermions. We discuss possible exten…
We study the phase diagram of the SU(2) lattice gauge theory with fundamental-adjoint Wilson plaquette action. We confirm the presence of a first order bulk phase transition and we estimate the location of its end-point in the bare parameter space. If this point is second order, the theory is one of the simplest realizations of a lattice gauge theory admitting a continuum limit at finite bare couplings. All the relevant gauge observables are monitored in the vicinity of the fixed point with very good control over finite-size effects. The scaling properties of the low-lying glueball spectrum ar…
{We present the results of a numerical investigation of SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f=3/2$ flavours of fermions, corresponding to 3 Majorana fermions, which transform in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. At two values of the gauge coupling, the masses of bound states are considered as a function of the PCAC quark mass. The scaling of bound states masses indicates an infrared conformal behaviour of the theory. We obtain estimates for the fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension $γ^*$ from the scaling of masses and from the scaling of the mode number of the Wilson-Dirac oper…
We study the thermal phase diagram of pure SU(3) gauge theory with fundamental and adjoint couplings. We improve previous estimates of the position of the bulk transition line and determine the thermal deconfinement transition lines for $N_t=2,4,6,$ and 8. For $N_t > 4$ the deconfinement transition line splits cleanly away from the bulk transition line. With increasing $N_t$ the thermal deconfinement transition lines shift to increasingly weaker coupling, joining onto the bulk transition line at increasingly larger $β_a$ in a pattern consistent with the usual universality picture of lattice ga…
A generalization of Wilsonian lattice gauge theory may be obtained by considering the possible self-adjoint extensions of the electric field operator in the Hamiltonian formalism. In the special case of 3D $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge theory these are parametrised by a phase $θ$, and the ordinary Wilson theory is recovered for $θ=0$. We consider the case $θ=π$, which, upon dualization, turns into a theory of staggered integer and half-integer height variables. We investigate order parameters for the breaking of the relevant symmetries, and thus study the phase diagram of the theory, which shows evide…
In this work we present the results of a numerical investigation of SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 3/2 flavours of fermions, corresponding to 3 Majorana fermions, which transform in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. At two values of the gauge coupling, the masses of bound states are considered as a function of the fundamental fermion mass, represented by the PCAC quark mass. The scaling of bound states masses indicates an infrared conformal behaviour of the theory. We obtain estimates for the fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension $γ^{\ast}$ from the scaling of masses an…
It is a long-standing question whether the confinement of matter fields in QCD has an imprint in the (gauge-dependent) correlation functions, especially the propagators. In particular in the quenched case a fundamental difference could be expected between adjoint and fundamental matter. In a preceding investigation the propagator of a fundamental scalar has been studied, showing no obvious sign of confinement. Here, complementary, the adjoint scalar propagator is investigated over a wide range of parameters in the minimal Landau gauge using lattice gauge theory. This study is performed in two,…
Scalar particles in the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge theory play an important role in many scenarios beyond the standard model, especially of GUT type. For such theories manifestly gauge-invariant, massless, composite vector particles have been predicted, even at weak coupling, using the Fröhlich-Morchio-Strocchi mechanism. We use lattice gauge theory to investigate the simplest such theories, a single adjoint scalar coupled to an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. The results support the existence of such a particle, in accordance with the prediction.
The phase structure of QCD-like gauge theories with fermions in various representations is an interesting but generally analytically intractable problem. One way to ensure weak coupling is to define the theory in a small finite volume, in this case S^3 x S^1. Genuine phase transitions can then occur in the large N theory. Here, we use this technique to investigate SU(N) gauge theory with a number N_f of massive adjoint-valued Majorana fermions having non-thermal boundary conditions around S^1. For N_f =1 we find a line of transitions that separate the weak-coupling analogues of the confined an…
An SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions transforming under the adjoint representation of the gauge group may appear conformal or almost conformal in the infrared. We use lattice simulations to study the spectrum of this theory and present results on the masses of several gauge singlet states as a function of the physical quark mass determined through the axial Ward identity and find indications of a change from chiral symmetry breaking to a phase consistent with conformal behaviour at beta_L ~ 2. However, the measurement of the spectrum is not alone sufficient to decisively confirm the existen…
We study the relation of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in gauge theories with non-trivial center, such as SU(N) gauge theories. To this end, we deform these gauge theories by introducing an additional control parameter into the theory and by varying the representation of the quark fields. We then consider a large-d(R) expansion of the effective action, where d(R) denotes the dimension of the representation R of the quark fields. We show how our large-d(R) expansion can be extended in a systematic fashion and discuss the effects of 1/d(R)-corrections on the dynamics close to the fini…
We investigate differences and similarities between fundamental fermions and adjoint fermions in SU(N) gauge theories. The gauge theory with fundamental fermions possesses ZN symmetry only in the limit of infinite fermion mass, whereas the gauge theory with adjoint fermions does have the symmetry for any fermion mass. The flavor-dependent twisted boundary condition (FTBC) is then imposed on fundamental fermions so that the theory with fundamental fermions can possess ZN symmetry for any fermion mass. We show similarities between FTBC fundamental fermions and adjoint fermions, using the Polyako…
We analyze the finite temperature phase diagram of$QC$ with fermions in the adjoint representation. The simulations performed with four dynamical Majorana fermions show that the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions occur at two distinct temperatures. While the deconfinement transition is first order at T_d we find evidence for a continuous chiral transition at a higher temperature $T_c ~ 8 T_d. We observe a rapid change of bulk thermodynamic observables at T_d which reflects the increase in the number of degrees of freedom. However, these show little variation at T_c, where the fermion c…
We study SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group on the lattice. Using clover improved Wilson fermion action with hypercubic truncated stout smearing we perform simulations at larger coupling than earlier. We measure the evolution of the coupling constant using the step scaling method with Schrödinger functional and study the remaining discretization effects. At weak coupling we observe significant discretization effects, which make it difficult to obtain a fully controlled continuum limit. Nevertheless, the data remains consistent with the e…
We apply Schrodinger-functional techniques to the SU(2) lattice gauge theory with N_f=2 flavors of fermions in the adjoint representation. Our use of hypercubic smearing enables us to work at stronger couplings than did previous studies, before encountering a critical point and a bulk phase boundary. Measurement of the running coupling constant gives evidence of an infrared fixed point g* where 1/g*^2 = 0.20(4)(3). At the fixed point, we find a mass anomalous dimension gamma_m(g*) = 0.31(6).
For the non-perturbative analysis of the topological content of Yang-Mills theories, it is essential to disentangle long-range structures from short-range fluctuations. Some time ago, one of us proposed to use the adjoint modes of the Dirac operator for this purpose. In this talk we analyse an implementation of this idea that associates two Weyl fermionic modes in the adjoint representation to every gauge field configuration. The densities of these modes provide a filtered image of the self-dual and anti self-dual parts of the gauge action density. We present successful tests on the performanc…
The phase diagram of SU(N) gauge theories with fermions in an arbitrary representation R can be calculated on finite volume manifolds such as S^1 x S^3. When S^3 is small a perturbative analysis is possible and the weak-coupling analogue of the pure Yang-Mills theory confinement-deconfinement transition is accessible in the large N limit. We calculate the large N phase diagram of adjoint QCD [SU(N) gauge theory with adjoint fermions] where periodic boundary conditions are applied to fermions on S^1 such that the confined phase is favored for light enough adjoint fermion mass. We calculate the …
We calculate the phase diagrams at high temperature of SU(N) gauge theories with massive fermions by minimizing the one-loop effective potential. Considering fermions in the adjoint (Adj) representation at various N we observe a variety of phases when Nf >= 2 Majorana flavours and periodic boundary conditions are applied to fermions. Also the confined phase is perturbatively accessible. For N = 3, we add Fundamental (F) representation fermions with antiperiodic boundary conditions to adjoint QCD to show how the Z(3)-symmetry breaks in the confined phase.
We derive a formula for the large N behaviour of the expectation values of an arbitrary product of Wilson loops in the adjoint representation. We show the consequences of our formula for the study of the large N strong coupling behaviour of SU(N)/Z_N pure gauge theories, and theories with matter fields in the adjoint representation. This allows us to calculate large N corrections to the gluino condensate and meson propagators in the lattice version of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Applications to the strong coupling behaviour of the Kazakov-Migdal model are also given.
We consider two-dimensional lattice SU($N_c$) gauge theories with $N_f$ real scalar fields transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group and with a global O($N_f$) invariance. Focusing on systems with $N_f\ge 3$, we study their zero-temperature limit, to understand under which conditions a continuum limit exists, and to investigate the nature of the associated quantum field theory. Extending previous analyses, we address the role that the gauge-group representation and the quartic scalar potential play in determining the nature of the continuum limit (when it exists). Our resul…
We compute the mass spectrum of the SU(2) adjoint Higgs model in 2+1 dimensions at several points located in the (metastable) confinement region of its phase diagram. We find a dense spectrum consisting of an almost unaltered repetition of the glueball spectrum of the pure gauge theory, and additional bound states of adjoint scalars. For the parameters chosen, the model represents the effective finite temperature theory for pure SU(2) gauge theory in four dimensions, obtained after perturbative dimensional reduction. Comparing with the spectrum of screening masses obtained in recent simulation…
We study possibilities to define a static quark anti-quark pair in a colour-adjoint orientation based on Wilson loops with generator insertions, using both lattice QCD and leading order perturbation theory in various gauges. Non-perturbatively, the only way to obtain non-zero results while maintaining positivity of the Hamiltonian is by some form of temporal gauge. In this case the correlator is equivalent to a gauge invariant correlation function of a static quark anti-quark pair and a static adjoint quark, the resulting three-point potential is attractive. Saturating open colour indices with…
Quarks in the adjoint representation have been a subject of study for both conceptual and practical purposes. Conceptually, their differences when it comes to confining and chiral symmetry properties has long been suspected to hold important information on the relation of these two distinguished properties of QCD-like gauge theories. Practically, they have been studied as both a possibility to access finite density quark systems as well as candidate theories for technicolor in beyond-the-standard-model settings. The most elementary object describing such particles is their propagator, though i…
Motivated by recent scenarios of exotic infrared behaviour and by earlier lattice findings, we present results for the SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation. This provides a major update on our previous investigation of this theory, including data for four values of the gauge coupling $β$, and for smaller masses and larger volumes than previously considered. Results for the particle spectrum, topological observables, and the anomalous dimension from both hyperscaling and the Dirac mode number are presented. At the finest coupling, we observe a mass anomalous di…
The phase diagrams at high temperature of SU(N) gauge theories with massive fermions are calculated by numerically minimizing the one-loop effective potential. We consider fermions in the Fundamental (F), Adjoint (Adj), Antisymmetric (AS), and Symmetric (S) representations, for N from 3 to 9, with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions applied. For one flavour of AS/S (Dirac) fermion with periodic boundary conditions the C-breaking phase is favoured perturbatively for all values of the fermion mass. In the case of one flavour of adjoint Majorana fermion, and periodic boundary conditons,…
We study the Landau gauge propagators of the lattice SU(2) 3d adjoint Higgs model, considered as an effective theory of high temperature 4d SU(2) gauge theory. From the long distance behaviour of the propagators we extract the screening masses. The propagators are studied both in the symmetric and the broken phases of the 3d Higgs model. It is shown that the pole masses extracted from the propagators in the symmetric phase agree well with the screening masses obtained recently in finite temperature SU(2) theory, while propagators measured in the broken phase show quite a different behaviour. T…
We summarize our results concerning the spectrum and mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) gauge theories with various numbers of fermions in the adjoint representation, where each Majorana fermion corresponds effectively to half a Dirac flavour $N_f$. The most relevant examples for extensions of the standard model are supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory ($N_f=1/2$) and Minimal Walking Technicolour ($N_f=2$). In addition to these theories we will also consider the cases of $N_f=1$ and $N_f=3/2$. The results comprise the particle spectrum of glueballs, triplet and singlet mesons, and possible fraction…
We present further evidence for the bulk nature of the phase transition line in the fundamental--adjoint action plane of SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Computing the string tension and some glueball masses along the thermal phase transition line of finite temperature systems with $N_t=4$, which was found to join onto the bulk transition line at its endpoint, we find that the ratio $\sqrtσ / T_c$ remains approximately constant. However, the mass of the $0^{++}$ glueball decreases as the endpoint of the bulk transition line is approached, while the other glueball masses appear unchanged. This is co…
It is shown that SU(N) gauge theory coupled to adjoint Higgs can be explicitly re-written in terms of SU(N) gauge invariant dynamical variables with local physical interactions. The resultant theory has a novel compact abelian $U(1)^{(N - 1)}$ gauge invariance. The above abelian gauge invariance is related to the adjoint Higgs field and not to the gauge group SU(N). In this abelianized version the magnetic monopoles carrying the magnetic charges of $(N-1)$ types have a natural origin and therefore appear explicitly in the partition function as Dirac monopoles along with their strings. The gaug…
