For two metric spaces $\mathbb X$ and $\mathcal Y$, the chromatic number $χ(\mathbb X;\mathcal Y)$ of $\mathbb X$ with forbidden $\mathcal Y$ is the smallest $k$ such that there is a coloring of the points of $\mathbb X$ with $k$ colors and no monochromatic copy of $\mathcal Y$. In this paper, we show that for each finite metric space $\mathcal{M}$ that contains at least two points the value $χ\left(\mathbb R^n_\infty; \mathcal M \right)$ grows exponentially with $n$. We also provide explicit lower and upper bounds for some special $\mathcal M$.
We estimate Ramsey numbers for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. In particular we determine asymptotically the two and three color Ramsey numbers for grid graphs. More generally, we determine asymptotically the two color Ramsey number for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree and the three color Ramsey number for such graphs with the additional assumption that the bipartite graph is balanced.
Chen et al. (2004) strongly conjectured that R(Tn,Wm)=2n-1 if the maximum degree of Tn is small and m is even. Related to the conjecture, it is interesting to know for which tree Tn, we have R(Tn,Wm) > 2n-1 for even m. In this paper, we find the Ramsey number R(Tn,W8) for tree Tn with the maximum degree of Tn is at least n-3, namely R(Tn,W8) > 2n-1 for almost all such tree Tn. We also prove that if the maximum degree of Tn is large, then R(Tn,Wm) is a function of both m and n. In the end, we refine the conjecture of Chen et al. by giving the condition of small maximum degree. For a tree Tn wit…
Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. We prove that the same holds for 3-uniform hypergraphs. The main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for 3-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable 3-uniform `pseudo-random' hypergraphs.
Chvatal, Roedl, Szemeredi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. In previous work, we proved the same result for 3-uniform hypergraphs. Here we extend this result to k-uniform hypergraphs, for any integer k > 3. As in the 3-uniform case, the main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for k-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable k-uniform `quasi-random' hypergraphs.
We investigate Ramsey numbers of bounded degree graphs and provide an interpolation between known results on the Ramsey numbers of general bounded degree graphs and bounded degree graphs of small bandwidth. Our main theorem implies that there exists a constant $c$ such that for every $Δ$, there exists $β$ such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ having a homomorphism $f$ into a graph $H$ of maximum degree at most $d$ where $|f^{-1}(v)| \le βn$ for all $v \in V(H)$, then the Ramsey number of $G$ is at most $c^{d \log d} n$. A construction of Graham, Rödl, and Ruci…
For a fixed graph $F$, the $\textit{anti-Ramsey number}$, $AR(n,F)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of anti-Ramsey numbers of linear forests for sufficiently large $n$, and show the extremal edge-colored graphs. This answers a question of Fang, Győri, Lu and Xiao.
The anti-Ramsey number $Ar(G,H)$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $G$ with no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we determine the exact anti-Ramsey number in the generalized Petersen graph $P_{n,k}$ for cycles $C_d$, where $1\leq k\leq \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor$ and $5\le d \le 6$. We also give an algorithm to obtain the upper bound or lower bound of anti-Ramsey number.
We estimate the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced bipartite graphs $H$ with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. More precisely, we show that the minimum value of $N$ such that in any $3$-edge colouring of $K_{N,N}$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ is at most $\big(3/2+o(1)\big)|V(H)|$. In particular, we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced grid graphs.
Consider a matroid $M=(E,\mathcal{I})$ with its elements of the ground set $E$ colored. A rainbow basis is a maximum independent set in which each element receives a different color. The rank of a subset $S$ of $E$, denoted by $r_M(S)$, is the maximum size of an independent set in $S$. A flat $F$ is a maximal set in $M$ with a fixed rank. The anti-Ramsey number of $t$ pairwise disjoint rainbow bases in $M$, denoted by $ar(M,t)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors $m$ such that there exists an $m$ coloring of the ground set $E$ of $M$ which contains no $t$ pairwise disjoint rainbow base…
The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the smallest number n such that, in any two-colouring of the edges of K_n, there is a monochromatic copy of H. We study the Ramsey number of graphs H with t vertices and density \r, proving that r(H) \leq 2^{c \sqrt{\r} \log (2/\r) t}. We also investigate some related problems, such as the Ramsey number of graphs with t vertices and maximum degree \r t and the Ramsey number of random graphs in \mathcal{G}(t, \r), that is, graphs on t vertices where each edge has been chosen independently with probability \r.
Let t be an integer, f(n) a function, and H a graph. Define the t-Ramsey-Turán number of H, RT_t(n, H, f(n)), to be the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex, H-free graph G where f(n) is larger than the maximum number of vertices in a $K_t$-free induced subgraph of G. Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós, and Szemerédi posed several open questions about RT_t(n,K_s,o(n)), among them finding the minimum s such that $RT_t(n,K_{t+s},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$, where it is easy to see that $RT_t(n,K_{t+1},o(n)) = o(n^2)$. In this paper, we answer this question by proving that $RT_t(n,K_{t+2},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$; our …
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, the ordered Ramsey number $\operatorname{OR}_t(G)$ is the least integer $N$ such that every $t$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform graph on vertex set $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G$ whose vertices follow the prescribed order. Due to this added order restriction, the ordered Ramsey numbers can be much larger than the usual graph Ramsey numbers. We determine that the ordered Ramsey numbers of loose paths under a monotone order grows as a tower of height one less than the maximum degree. We al…
We say that a graph $F$ can be embedded into a graph $G$ if $G$ contains an isomorphic copy of $F$ as a subgraph. Guo and Volkmann \cite{GV} conjectured that if $G$ is a connected graph with at least $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $n-3$, then any tree with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $n-4$ can be embedded into $G$. In this paper, we give a result slightly stronger than this conjecture and obtain a sufficient and necessary condition that a tree with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $n-3$ can be embedded into a connected graph G with at least $n$ vertices and minimum…
For a given graph $H$, the anti-Ramsey number of $H$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a complete graph which does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we extend the decomposition family of graphs to the decomposition family sequence of graphs and show that $K_5$ is determined by its decomposition family sequence. Based on this new graph notation, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers for new families of graphs, including the Petersen graph, vertex-disjoint union of cliques, etc., and characterize the extremal colorings.
The degree anti-Ramsey number $AR_d(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the smallest integer $k$ for which there exists a graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $k$ such that any proper edge colouring of $G$ yields a rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper we prove a general upper bound on degree anti-Ramsey numbers, determine the precise value of the degree anti-Ramsey number of any forest, and prove an upper bound on the degree anti-Ramsey numbers of cycles of any length which is best possible up to a multiplicative factor of $2$. Our proofs involve a variety of tools, including a classical result of Bollobás c…
A major line of research is discovering Ramsey-type theorems, which are results of the following form: given a graph parameter $ρ$, every graph $G$ with sufficiently large $ρ(G)$ contains a `well-structured' induced subgraph $H$ with large $ρ(H)$. The classical Ramsey's theorem deals with the case when the graph parameter under consideration is the number of vertices; there is also a Ramsey-type theorem regarding connected graphs. Given a graph $G$, the matching number and the induced matching number of $G$ is the maximum size of a matching and an induced matching, respectively, of $G$. In thi…
We prove that for all epsilon>0 there are c>0 and n_0 such that for all n>n_0 the following holds. For any two-colouring of the edges of $K_{n,n,n}$ one colour contains copies of all trees T of order t<(3-epsilon)n/2 and with maximum degree at most n^c. This confirms a conjecture of Schelp.
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$ with $H\subseteq G$ we consider the anti-Ramsey function $AR(G,H)$ which is the maximum number of colors in any edge-coloring of $G$ so that every copy of $H$ receives the same color on at least one pair of edges. The classical Turán function for a graph $G$ and family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, written $ex(G,\mathcal{F})$, is defined as the maximum number of edges of a subgraph of $G$ not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$. We show that there exists a constant $c>0$ so that $AR(K_n,K_{s,t})-ex(K_n,K_{s,t})<cn$ and $c$ depends only on $s$ and $t$, which implies $…
An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all the colors on its edges are distinct. Given a positive integer n and a graph G, the anti-Ramsey number ar(n,G) is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of K_{n} with no rainbow copy of G. Denote by kC_{3} the union of k vertex-disjoint copies of C_{3}. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey number ar(n,kC_{3}) for n=3k and n\geq2k^{2}-k+2, respectively. When 3k\leq n\leq 2k^{2}-k+2, we give lower and upper bounds for ar(n, kC_{3}).
We call a subgraph of an edge-colored graph rainbow subgraph, if all of its edges have different colors. The anti-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ in a complete graph $K_{n}$, denoted by $ar(K_{n}, G)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ with no rainbow subgraph copy of $G$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of the anti-Ramsey number for star forests and the approximate value of the anti-Ramsey number for linear forests. Furthermore, we compute the exact value of $ar(K_{n}, 2P_{4})$ for $n\ge 8$ and $ar(K_{n}, S_{p,q})$ for large $n$, where $S_{p,q}$ is the do…
Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbe…
The upper (mixed) domination Ramsey number $u(m, n)$($v(m,n)$) is the smallest integer $p$ such that every $2$-coloring of the edges of $K_p$ with color red and blue, $Γ(B) \geq m$ or $Γ(R) \geq n$ ($β(R) \geq n$); where $B$ and $R$ is the subgraph of $K_p$ induced by blue and red edges, respectively; $Γ(G)$ is the maximum cardinality of a minimal dominating set of a graph $G$. First, we prove that $v(3,n)=t(3,n)$ where $t(m,n)$ is the mixed irredundant Ramsey number i.e. the smallest integer $p$ such that in every two-coloring $(R, B)$ of the edges of $K_p$, $IR(B) \geq m$ or $β(R) \geq n$ ($…
We study Turán and Ramsey-type problems on edge-colored graphs. An edge-colored graph is called {\em $\varepsilon$-balanced} if each color class contains at least an $\varepsilon$-proportion of its edges. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of edge-colored graphs, the Ramsey function $R(\varepsilon, \mathcal{F})$ is the smallest $n$ for which any $\varepsilon$-balanced $K_n$ must contain a copy of an $F\in\mathcal{F}$, and the Turán function $\mathrm{ex}(\varepsilon, n, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\varepsilon$-balanced graph which avoids all of $\mathcal{F}$. In thi…
We call a graph H Ramsey-unsaturated if there is an edge in the complement of H such that the Ramsey number r(H) of H does not change upon adding it to H. This notion was introduced by Balister, Lehel and Schelp who also proved that cycles (except for $C_4$) are Ramsey-unsaturated, and conjectured that, moreover, one may add any chord without changing the Ramsey number of the cycle $C_n$, unless n is even and adding the chord creates an odd cycle. We prove this conjecture for large cycles by showing a stronger statement: If a graph H is obtained by adding a linear number of chords to a cycle $…
Let $s$ be an integer, $f=f(n)$ a function, and $H$ a graph. Define the Ramsey-Turán number $RT_s(n,H, f)$ as the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free graph $G$ of order $n$ with $α_s(G) < f$, where $α_s(G)$ is the maximum number of vertices in a $K_s$-free induced subgraph of $G$. The Ramsey-Turán number attracted a considerable amount of attention and has been mainly studied for $f$ not too much smaller than $n$. In this paper we consider $RT_s(n,K_t, n^δ)$ for fixed $δ<1$. We show that for an arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$ and $1/2<δ< 1$, $RT_s(n,K_{s+1}, n^δ) = Ω(n^{1+δ-\varepsilon})$…
In this paper, we investigate a variant of Ramsey numbers called defective Ramsey numbers where cliques and independent sets are generalized to $k$-dense and $k$-sparse sets, both commonly called $k$-defective sets. We focus on the computation of defective Ramsey numbers restricted to some subclasses of perfect graphs. Since direct proof techniques are often insufficient for obtaining new values of defective Ramsey numbers, we provide a generic algorithm to compute defective Ramsey numbers in a given target graph class. We combine direct proof techniques with our efficient graph generation alg…
Given a graph $G$, a $k$-sparse $j$-set is a set of $j$ vertices inducing a subgraph with maximum degree at most $k$. A $k$-dense $i$-set is a set of $i$ vertices that is $k$-sparse in the complement of $G$. As a generalization of Ramsey numbers, the $k$-defective Ramsey number $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ for the graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is defined as the smallest natural number $n$ such that all graphs on $n$ vertices in the class $\mathcal{G}$ have either a $k$-dense $i$-set or a $k$-sparse $j$-set. In this paper, we examine $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ where $\mathcal{G}$ represents various graph…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is called rainbow if every edge of $G$ receives a different color. The anti-Ramsey number of $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees, denoted by $r(n,t)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ containing no $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Jahanbekam and West [J. Graph Theory, 2014] conjectured that for any fixed $t$, $r(n,t)=\binom{n-2}{2}+t$ whenever $n\geq 2t+2 \geq 6$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. We also determine $r(n,t)$ when $n = 2t+1$. Together with previous results, this gives the anti-Ramsey number of …
A $ρ$-mean coloring of a graph is a coloring of the edges such that the average number of colors incident with each vertex is at most $ρ$. For a graph $H$ and for $ρ\geq 1$, the {\em mean Ramsey-Turán number} $RT(n,H,ρ-mean)$ is the maximum number of edges a $ρ$-mean colored graph with $n$ vertices can have under the condition it does not have a monochromatic copy of $H$. It is conjectured that $RT(n,K_m,2-mean)=RT(n,K_m,2)$ where $RT(n,H,k)$ is the maximum number of edges a $k$ edge-colored graph with $n$ vertices can have under the condition it does not have a monochromatic copy of $H$. We p…
For two graph H and G, the Ramsey number r(H, G) is the smallest positive integer n such that every red-blue edge coloring of the complete graph K_n on n vertices contains either a red copy of H or a blue copy of G. Motivated by questions of Erdos and Harary, in this note we study how the Ramsey number r(K_s, G) depends on the size of the graph G. For s \geq 3, we prove that for every G with m edges, r(K_s,G) \geq c (m/\log m)^{\frac{s+1}{s+3}} for some positive constant c depending only on s. This lower bound improves an earlier result of Erdos, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp, and is tight up …
A subgraph of an edge-colored graph is rainbow, if all of its edges have different colors. For a graph $G$ and a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(G, \mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number $k$ such that there exists an edge-coloring of $G$ with exactly $k$ colors without rainbow copy of any graph in $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study the anti-Ramsey number of $C_{3}$ and $C_{4}$ in the complete $r$-partite graphs. For $r\ge 3$ and $n_{1}\ge n_{2}\ge \cdots\ge n_{r}\ge 1$, we determine $ ar(K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, \ldots, n_{r}},\{C_{3}, C_{4}\}), ar(K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, \ldots, …
We say that a subgraph $F$ of a graph $G$ is singular if the degrees $d_G(v)$ are all equal or all distinct for the vertices $v\in V(F)$. The singular Ramsey number Rs$(F)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that, for every $m\geq n$, in every edge 2-coloring of $K_m$, at least one of the color classes contains $F$ as a singular subgraph. In a similar flavor, the singular Turán number Ts$(n,F)$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$, which does not contain $F$ as a singular subgraph. In this paper we initiate the study of these extremal problems. We develop me…
Let $\mathcal{O}_n$ be the set of all maximal outerplanar graphs of order $n$. Let $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,F)$ denote the maximum positive integer $k$ such that $T\in \mathcal{O}_n$ has no rainbow subgraph $F$ under a $k$-edge-coloring of $T$. Denote by $M_k$ a matching of size $k$. In this paper, we prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)\le n+4k-9$ for $n\ge3k-3$, which expressively improves the existing upper bound for $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)$. We also prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_5)=n+4$ for all $n\ge 15$.
The $r$-size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}_r(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the smallest number of edges a graph $G$ can have, such that for every edge-coloring of $G$ with $r$ colors there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$. For a graph $H$, we denote by $H^q$ the graph obtained from $H$ by subdividing its edges with $q{-}1$ vertices each. In a recent paper of Kohayakawa, Retter and R{ö}dl, it is shown that for all constant integers $q,r\geq 2$ and every graph $H$ on $n$ vertices and of bounded maximum degree, the $r$-size-Ramsey number of $H^q$ is at most $(\log n)^{20(q-1)}n^{1+1/q}$, for $n$ large …
Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov proved that the $(k-1)$-partite Turán graph maximizes the number of distinct $r$-edge-colorings with no monochromatic $K_k$ for all fixed $k$ and $r=2,3$, among all $n$-vertex graphs. In this paper, we determine this function asymptotically for $r=2$ among $n$-vertex graphs with sub-linear independence number. Somewhat surprisingly, unlike Alon-Balogh-Keevash-Sudakov's result, the extremal construction from Ramsey-Turán theory, as a natural candidate, does not maximize the number of distinct edge-colorings with no monochromatic cliques among all graphs with su…
Let r be an integer, f(n) a function, and H a graph. Introduced by Erdős, Hajnal, Sós, and Szemerédi, the r-Ramsey-Turán number of H, RT_r(n, H, f(n)), is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex, H-free graph G with α_r(G) <= f(n) where α_r(G) denotes the K_r-independence number of G. In this note, using isoperimetric properties of the high dimensional unit sphere, we construct graphs providing lower bounds for RT_r(n,K_{r+s},o(n)) for every 2 <= s <= r. These constructions are sharp for an infinite family of pairs of r and s. The only previous sharp construction was by Bollob…
A graph G is Ramsey for H if every two-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of H. Two graphs H and H' are Ramsey-equivalent if every graph G is Ramsey for H if and only if it is Ramsey for H'. In this paper, we study the problem of determining which graphs are Ramsey-equivalent to the complete graph K_k. A famous theorem of Nesetril and Rodl implies that any graph H which is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k must contain K_k. We prove that the only connected graph which is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k is itself. This gives a negative answer to the question of Szabo, Zumstein, and Zurch…
The family $D(k,m)$ of graphs having an orientation such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$ either (outdegree) $°^+(v) \le k$ or (indegree) $°^-(v) \le m$ have been investigated recently in several papers because of the role $D(k,m)$ plays in the efforts to estimate the maximum directed cut in digraphs and the minimum cover of digraphs by directed cuts. Results concerning the chromatic number of graphs in the family $D(k,m)$ have been obtained via the notion of $d$-degeneracy of graphs. In this paper we consider a far reaching generalization of the family $D(k,m)$, in a complementary form, int…
For an integer $k \geq 2$, an ordered $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}=(H,<)$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ together with a fixed linear ordering $<$ of its vertex set. The ordered Ramsey number $\overline{R}(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{G})$ of two ordered $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue coloring of the hyperedges of the ordered complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{K}^{(k)}_N$ on $N$ vertices contains a blue copy of $\mathcal{H}$ or a red copy of $\mathcal{G}$. The ordered Ramsey numbers are quite extensivel…
The Zarankiewicz number $z(b;s)$ is the maximum size of a subgraph of $K_{b,b}$ which does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph. The two-color bipartite Ramsey number $b(s,t)$ is the smallest integer $b$ such that any coloring of the edges of $K_{b,b}$ with two colors contains a $K_{s,s}$ in the first color or a $K_{t,t}$ in the second color. In this work, we design and exploit a computational method for bounding and computing Zarankiewicz numbers. Using it, we obtain several new values and bounds on $z(b;s)$ for $3 \le s \le 6$. Our approach and new knowledge about $z(b;s)$ permit us to improv…
The anti-Ramsey number $ar(G,H)$ with input graph $G$ and pattern graph $H$, is the maximum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge coloring of $G$ using $k$ colors, in which there are no rainbow subgraphs isomorphic to $H$ in $G$. ($H$ is rainbow if all its edges get distinct colors). The concept of anti-Ramsey number was introduced by Erdös, Simanovitz, and Sós in 1973. Thereafter several researchers investigated this concept in the combinatorial setting. Recently, Feng et al. revisited the anti-Ramsey problem for the pattern graph $K_{1,t}$ (for $t \geq 3$) purely from an algori…
Burr and Erdős in 1975 conjectured, and Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter later proved, that the Ramsey number of any bounded degree graph is linear in the number of vertices. In this paper, we disprove the natural directed analogue of the Burr--Erdős conjecture, answering a question of Bucić, Letzter, and Sudakov. If $H$ is an acyclic digraph, the oriented Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $\overrightarrow{r_{1}}(H)$, is the least $N$ such that every tournament on $N$ vertices contains a copy of $H$. We show that for any $Δ\geq 2$ and any sufficiently large $n$, there exists an acyclic digraph…
Given a graph $H$ and a function $f:\mathbb{Z}^+ \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+ $, the Ramsey-Turán number of $H$ and $f$, denoted by $RT(n, H, f(n))$, is the maximum number of edges a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can have, which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph and also does not contain a set of $f(n)$ independent vertices. Let $r$ be a positive integer. In 1969, Erdős and Sós proved that $RT(n,K_{2r+1},o(n))=\frac{n^2}{2}(1-\frac{1}{r})+o(n^2)$. Let $F_k(2r+1)$ denote the graph consisting of $k$ copies of complete graphs $K_{2r+1}$ sharing exactly one vertex. In this paper, we show that $RT(n,F…
A celebrated result of Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter states (in slightly weakened form) that, for every natural number $Δ$, there is a constant $r_Δ$ such that, for any connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$, the Ramsey number $R(G,G)$ is at most $r_Δn$, provided $n$ is sufficiently large. In 1987, Burr made a strong conjecture implying that one may take $r_Δ= Δ$. However, Graham, Rödl and Ruciński showed, by taking $G$ to be a suitable expander graph, that necessarily $r_Δ> 2^{cΔ}$ for some constant $c>0$. We show that the use of expanders is essential: if we impose the…
For an integer $q\ge 2$, a graph $G$ is called $q$-Ramsey for a graph $H$ if every $q$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. If $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$, yet no proper subgraph of $G$ has this property then $G$ is called $q$-Ramsey-minimal for $H$. Generalising a statement by Burr, Nešetřil and Rödl from 1977 we prove that, for $q\ge 3$, if $G$ is a graph that is not $q$-Ramsey for some graph $H$ then $G$ is contained as an induced subgraph in an infinite number of $q$-Ramsey-minimal graphs for $H$, as long as $H$ is $3$-connected or isomorphic to the triangle. F…
For a graph $G$, we write $G\rightarrow \big(K_{r+1},\mathcal{T}(n,D)\big)$ if every blue-red colouring of the edges of $G$ contains either a blue copy of $K_{r+1}$, or a red copy of each tree with $n$ edges and maximum degree at most $D$. In 1977, Chvátal proved that for any integers $r,n,D \ge 2$, $K_N \rightarrow \big(K_{r+1},\mathcal{T}(n,D)\big)$ if and only if $N \ge rn+1$. We prove a random analogue of Chvátal's theorem for bounded degree trees, that is, we show that for each $r,D\ge 2$ there exist constants $C,C'>0$ such that if $p \ge C{n}^{-2/(r+2)}$ and $N \geq rn + C'/p$, then \[G(…
For ordered graphs $G$ and $H$, the ordered Ramsey number $r_<(G,H)$ is the smallest $n$ such that every red/blue edge coloring of the complete graph on vertices $\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains either a blue copy of $G$ or a red copy of $H$, where the embedding must preserve the relative order of vertices. One number of interest, first studied by Conlon, Fox, Lee, and Sudakov, is the "off-diagonal" ordered Ramsey number $r_<(M, K_3)$, where $M$ is an ordered matching on $n$ vertices. In particular, Conlon et al. asked what asymptotic bounds (in $n$) can be obtained for $\max r_<(M, K_3)$, where the m…
An edge-colored hypergraph is rainbow if all of its edges have different colors. Given two hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ in $\mathcal{G}$ is the maximum number of colors needed to color the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ so that there does not exist a rainbow copy of $\mathcal{H}$. Li et al. determined the anti-Ramsey number of $k$-matchings in complete bipartite graphs. Jin and Zang showed the uniqueness of the extremal coloring. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbe…
