A subgraph of an edge-colored graph is rainbow, if all of its edges have different colors. For a graph $G$ and a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(G, \mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number $k$ such that there exists an edge-coloring of $G$ with exactly $k$ colors without rainbow copy of any graph in $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study the anti-Ramsey number of $C_{3}$ and $C_{4}$ in the complete $r$-partite graphs. For $r\ge 3$ and $n_{1}\ge n_{2}\ge \cdots\ge n_{r}\ge 1$, we determine $ ar(K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, \ldots, n_{r}},\{C_{3}, C_{4}\}), ar(K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, \ldots, n_{r}}, C_{3})$ and $ar(K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, \ldots, n_{r}}, C_{4})$.
We construct of the main object of the Partite Lemma as the colimit over a certain diagram. This gives a purely category theoretic take on the Partite Lemma and establishes the canonicity of the object. Additionally, the categorical point of view allows us to unify the direct Partite Lemma in the Nešetřil--Rödl Theorem with the dual Paritite Lemma by Solecki.
An edge-colored hypergraph is rainbow if all of its edges have different colors. Given two hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ in $\mathcal{G}$ is the maximum number of colors needed to color the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ so that there does not exist a rainbow copy of $\mathcal{H}$. Li et al. determined the anti-Ramsey number of $k$-matchings in complete bipartite graphs. Jin and Zang showed the uniqueness of the extremal coloring. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbe…
Let $G$ be a complete multi-partite graph of order $n$. In this paper, we consider the anti-Ramsey number $ar(G,\mathcal{T}_{q})$ with respect to $G$ and the set $\mathcal{T}_{q}$ of trees with $q$ edges, where $2\le q\le n-1$. For the case $q=n-1$, the result has been obtained by Lu, Meier and Wang. We will extend it to $q<n-1$. We first show that $ar(G,\mathcal{T}_{q})=\ell_{q}(G)+1$, where $\ell_{q}(G)$ is the maximum size of a disconnected spanning subgraph $H$ of $G$ with the property that any two components of $H$ together have at most $q$ vertices. Using this equality, we obtain the exa…
The list Ramsey number $R_{\ell}(H,k)$, recently introduced by Alon, Bucić, Kalvari, Kuperwasser, and Szabó, is a list-coloring variant of the classical Ramsey number. They showed that if $H$ is a fixed $r$-uniform hypergraph that is not $r$-partite and the number of colors $k$ goes to infinity, $e^{Ω(\sqrt{k})} \le R_{\ell} (H,k) \le e^{O(k)}$. We prove that $R_{\ell}(H,k) = e^{Θ(k)}$ if and only if $H$ is not $r$-partite.
We prove that finite partial orders with a linear extension form a Ramsey class. Our proof is based on the fact that class of acyclic graphs has the Ramsey property and uses the partite construction.
In this paper we prove a new result about partitioning coloured complete graphs and use it to determine certain Ramsey numbers exactly. The partitioning theorem we prove is that for k at least 1, in every edge colouring of a complete graph with the colours red and blue, it is possible to cover all the vertices with k disjoint red paths and a disjoint blue balanced complete (k+1)-partite graph. When the colouring is connected in red, we prove a stronger result - that it is possible to cover all the vertices with k red paths and a blue balanced complete (k+2)-partite graph. Using these results w…
The book graph $B_n^{(k)}$ consists of $n$ copies of $K_{k+1}$ joined along a common $K_k$. In the prequel to this paper, we studied the diagonal Ramsey number $r(B_n^{(k)}, B_n^{(k)})$. Here we consider the natural off-diagonal variant $r(B_{cn}^{(k)}, B_n^{(k)})$ for fixed $c \in (0,1]$. In this more general setting, we show that an interesting dichotomy emerges: for very small $c$, a simple $k$-partite construction dictates the Ramsey function and all nearly-extremal colorings are close to being $k$-partite, while, for $c$ bounded away from $0$, random colorings of an appropriate density ar…
We call a $4$-cycle in $K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, n_{3}}$ multipartite, denoted by $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$, if it contains at least one vertex in each part of $K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, n_{3}}$. The Turán number $\text{ex}(K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}}, C_{4}^{\text{multi}})$ $\bigg($ respectively, $\text{ex}(K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}},\{C_{3}, C_{4}^{\text{multi}}\})$ $\bigg)$ is the maximum number of edges in a graph $G\subseteq K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}}$ such that $G$ contains no $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$ $\bigg($ respectively, $G$ contains neither $C_{3}$ nor $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$ $\bigg)$. We call a $C^{multi}_4$ rainbow if a…
We consider a generalisation of the classical Ramsey theory setting to a setting where each of the edges of the underlying host graph is coloured with a {\em set} of colours (instead of just one colour). We give bounds for monochromatic tree covers in this setting, both for an underlying complete graph, and an underlying complete bipartite graph. We also discuss a generalisation of Ramsey numbers to our setting and propose some other new directions. Our results for tree covers in complete graphs imply that a stronger version of Ryser's conjecture holds for $k$-intersecting $r$-partite $r$-unif…
Assume that $K_{j\times n}$ be a complete, multipartite graph consisting of $j$ partite sets and $n$ vertices in each partite set. For given graphs $G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n$, the multipartite Ramsey number (M-R-number) $m_j(G_1, G_2, \ldots,G_n)$ is the smallest integer $t$ such that for any $n$-edge-coloring $(G^1,G^2,\ldots, G^n)$ of the edges of $K_{j\times t}$, $G^i$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G_i$ for at least one $i$. The size of M-R-number $m_j(nK_2, C_m)$ for $j, n\geq 2$ and $4\leq m\leq 6$, the size of M-R-number $m_j(nK_2, C_7)$ for $j \geq 2$ and $n\geq 2$, the size of M-R-numb…
Assume that $K_{j\times n}$ be a complete, multipartite graph consisting of $j$ partite sets and $n$ vertices in each partite set. For given graphs $G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n$, the multipartite Ramsey number (M-R-number) $m_j(G_1, G_2, \ldots,G_n)$ is the smallest integer $t$ such that for any $n$-edge-coloring $(G^1,G^2,\ldots, G^n)$ of the edges of $K_{j\times t}$, $G^i$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G_i$ for at least on $i$. C. J. Jayawardene, E. T. Baskoro et al. $(2016)$ gave the size of M-R-numbe $m_j(nK_2, C_7)$ for $j \geq 2 $ and $n\leq 6$. Y. Rowshan et al. $(2021)$ gave the size of M…
Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov proved that the $(k-1)$-partite Turán graph maximizes the number of distinct $r$-edge-colorings with no monochromatic $K_k$ for all fixed $k$ and $r=2,3$, among all $n$-vertex graphs. In this paper, we determine this function asymptotically for $r=2$ among $n$-vertex graphs with sub-linear independence number. Somewhat surprisingly, unlike Alon-Balogh-Keevash-Sudakov's result, the extremal construction from Ramsey-Turán theory, as a natural candidate, does not maximize the number of distinct edge-colorings with no monochromatic cliques among all graphs with su…
The anti-Ramsey number $Ar(G,H)$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $G$ with no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we determine the exact anti-Ramsey number in the generalized Petersen graph $P_{n,k}$ for cycles $C_d$, where $1\leq k\leq \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor$ and $5\le d \le 6$. We also give an algorithm to obtain the upper bound or lower bound of anti-Ramsey number.
The anti-Ramsey problem was introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1970s. The anti-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, $ar(n,s, \mathcal{H})$, is the smallest integer $c$ such that in any coloring of the edges of the $s$-uniform complete hypergraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $c$ colors, there is a copy of $\mathcal{H}$ whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of linear paths and loose paths in hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$, and give bounds for the anti-Ramsey numbers of Berge paths. Similar exact anti-Ramsey numbers are obtai…
For a fixed graph $F$, the $\textit{anti-Ramsey number}$, $AR(n,F)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of anti-Ramsey numbers of linear forests for sufficiently large $n$, and show the extremal edge-colored graphs. This answers a question of Fang, Győri, Lu and Xiao.
The anti-Ramsey number $AR(n,G$), for a graph $G$ and an integer $n\geq|V(G)|$, is defined to be the minimal integer $r$ such that in any edge-colouring of $K_n$ by at least $r$ colours there is a multicoloured copy of $G$, namely, a copy of $G$ whose edges have distinct colours. In this paper we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of all graphs having at most four edges.
The degree anti-Ramsey number $AR_d(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the smallest integer $k$ for which there exists a graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $k$ such that any proper edge colouring of $G$ yields a rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper we prove a general upper bound on degree anti-Ramsey numbers, determine the precise value of the degree anti-Ramsey number of any forest, and prove an upper bound on the degree anti-Ramsey numbers of cycles of any length which is best possible up to a multiplicative factor of $2$. Our proofs involve a variety of tools, including a classical result of Bollobás c…
A graph is properly edge-colored if no two adjacent edges have the same color. The smallest number of edges in a graph any of whose proper edge colorings contains a totally multicolored copy of a graph H is the size anti-Ramsey number AR_s(H) of H. This number in offline and online setting is investigated here.
We call a subgraph of an edge-colored graph rainbow subgraph, if all of its edges have different colors. The anti-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ in a complete graph $K_{n}$, denoted by $ar(K_{n}, G)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ with no rainbow subgraph copy of $G$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of the anti-Ramsey number for star forests and the approximate value of the anti-Ramsey number for linear forests. Furthermore, we compute the exact value of $ar(K_{n}, 2P_{4})$ for $n\ge 8$ and $ar(K_{n}, S_{p,q})$ for large $n$, where $S_{p,q}$ is the do…
For a given graph $H$, the anti-Ramsey number of $H$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a complete graph which does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we extend the decomposition family of graphs to the decomposition family sequence of graphs and show that $K_5$ is determined by its decomposition family sequence. Based on this new graph notation, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers for new families of graphs, including the Petersen graph, vertex-disjoint union of cliques, etc., and characterize the extremal colorings.
An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all the colors on its edges are distinct. Given a positive integer n and a graph G, the anti-Ramsey number ar(n,G) is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of K_{n} with no rainbow copy of G. Denote by kC_{3} the union of k vertex-disjoint copies of C_{3}. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey number ar(n,kC_{3}) for n=3k and n\geq2k^{2}-k+2, respectively. When 3k\leq n\leq 2k^{2}-k+2, we give lower and upper bounds for ar(n, kC_{3}).
Motivated by the paper of Axenovich and Walzer [2], we study the Ramsey-type problems on the Boolean lattices. Given posets $P$ and $Q$, we look for the smallest Boolean lattice $\mathcal{B}_N$ such that any coloring on elements of $\mathcal{B}_N$ must contain a monochromatic $P$ or a rainbow $Q$. This number $N$ is called the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number of $P$ and $Q$ in the paper. Particularly, we determine the exact values of the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number for $P$ and $Q$ being the antichains, the Boolean posets, or the chains. From these results, we also give some general upper and lo…
A poset $(P',\le_{P'})$ contains a copy of some other poset $(P,\le_P)$ if there is an injection $f\colon P'\to P$ where for every $X,Y\in P$, $X\le_P Y$ if and only if $f(X)\le_{P'} f(Y)$. For any posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that any blue/red coloring of a Boolean lattice of dimension $N$ contains either a copy of $P$ with all elements blue or a copy of $Q$ with all elements red. We denote by $K_{t_1,\dots,t_\ell}$ a complete $\ell$-partite poset, i.e.\ a poset consisting of $\ell$ pairwise disjoint sets $A^i$ of size $t_i$, $1\le i\le…
Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbe…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is called rainbow if every edge of $G$ receives a different color. The anti-Ramsey number of $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees, denoted by $r(n,t)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ containing no $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Jahanbekam and West [J. Graph Theory, 2014] conjectured that for any fixed $t$, $r(n,t)=\binom{n-2}{2}+t$ whenever $n\geq 2t+2 \geq 6$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. We also determine $r(n,t)$ when $n = 2t+1$. Together with previous results, this gives the anti-Ramsey number of …
The Ramsey multiplicity constant of a graph $H$ is the minimum proportion of copies of $H$ in the complete graph which are monochromatic under an edge-coloring of $K_n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. Graphs for which this minimum is asymptotically achieved by taking a random coloring are called {\em common}, and common graphs have been studied extensively, leading to the Burr-Rosta conjecture and Sidorenko's conjecture. Erdős and Sós asked what the maximum number of rainbow triangles is in a $3$-coloring of the edge set of $K_n$, a rainbow version of the Ramsey multiplicity question. A graph $H$ is …
For graphs $G$ and $H$, we write $G \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} H $ if any proper edge-coloring of $G$ contains a rainbow copy of $H$, i.e., a copy where no color appears more than once. Kohayakawa, Konstadinidis and the last author proved that the threshold for $G(n,p) \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow}H$ is at most $n^{-1/m_2(H)}$. Previous results have matched the lower bound for this anti-Ramsey threshold for cycles and complete graphs with at least 5 vertices. Kohayakawa, Konstadinidis and the last author also presented an infinite family of graphs $H$ for which the anti-Ra…
In this paper, for sufficiently large $n$ we determine the Ramsey number $R(G,nH)$ where $G$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with the maximum independent set that intersects each of the edges in $k-1$ vertices and $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with a vertex so that the hypergraph induced by the edges containing this vertex is a star. There are several examples for such $G$ and $H$, among them are any disjoint union of $k$-uniform hypergraphs involving loose paths, loose cycles, tight paths, tight cycles with a multiple of $k$ edges, stars, Kneser hypergraphs and complete $k$-uniform $k$-partite …
A $h$-sunflower in a hypergraph is a family of edges with $h$ vertices in common. We show that if we colour the edges of a complete hypergraph in such a way that any monochromatic $h$-sunflower has at most $λ$ petals, then it contains a large rainbow complete subhypergraph. This extends a theorem by Lefmann, Rödl and Wysocka, but this version can be applied to problems in geometry and algebra. We also give an infinite version of the theorem.
We consider quadruples of positive integers $(a,b,m,n)$ with $a\leq b$ and $m\leq n$ such that any proper edge-coloring of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ contains a rainbow $K_{a,b}$ subgraph. We show that any such quadruple with $a\leq m$ and $n>(a^2-a+1)(b-1)$ satisfies this property. We also show that the quadruple $(2,3,3,6)$ satisfies this property. We end with a conjecture.
In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings. For all $t\ge1$, let $M_t$ denote a matching of size $t$. We prove that for all $t\ge6$ and $n\ge 3t-6$, $2n+3t-15\le ar_{_{…
A seminal result of Hajnal and Szemerédi states that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices has minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (r-1)n/r$ for some integer $r \ge 2$, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor, assuming $r$ divides $n$. Extremal examples which show optimality of the bound on $δ(G)$ are very structured and, in particular, contain large independent sets. In analogy to the Ramsey-Turán theory, Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh initiated the study of how the absence of such large independent sets influences sufficient minimum degree. We show the following two related results: $\bullet$ For any $r > \ell \ge…
For graphs $G$ and $H$, let $G \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} H$ denote the property that for every proper edge colouring of $G$ there is a rainbow copy of $H$ in $G$. Extending a result of Nenadov, Person, Škorić and Steger [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 124 (2017),1-38], we determine the threshold for $G(n,p) \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} C_\ell$ for cycles $C_\ell$ of any given length $\ell \geq 4$.
Consider a matroid $M=(E,\mathcal{I})$ with its elements of the ground set $E$ colored. A rainbow basis is a maximum independent set in which each element receives a different color. The rank of a subset $S$ of $E$, denoted by $r_M(S)$, is the maximum size of an independent set in $S$. A flat $F$ is a maximal set in $M$ with a fixed rank. The anti-Ramsey number of $t$ pairwise disjoint rainbow bases in $M$, denoted by $ar(M,t)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors $m$ such that there exists an $m$ coloring of the ground set $E$ of $M$ which contains no $t$ pairwise disjoint rainbow base…
Let $\mathcal{O}_n$ be the set of all maximal outerplanar graphs of order $n$. Let $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,F)$ denote the maximum positive integer $k$ such that $T\in \mathcal{O}_n$ has no rainbow subgraph $F$ under a $k$-edge-coloring of $T$. Denote by $M_k$ a matching of size $k$. In this paper, we prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)\le n+4k-9$ for $n\ge3k-3$, which expressively improves the existing upper bound for $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)$. We also prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_5)=n+4$ for all $n\ge 15$.
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$ with $H\subseteq G$ we consider the anti-Ramsey function $AR(G,H)$ which is the maximum number of colors in any edge-coloring of $G$ so that every copy of $H$ receives the same color on at least one pair of edges. The classical Turán function for a graph $G$ and family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, written $ex(G,\mathcal{F})$, is defined as the maximum number of edges of a subgraph of $G$ not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$. We show that there exists a constant $c>0$ so that $AR(K_n,K_{s,t})-ex(K_n,K_{s,t})<cn$ and $c$ depends only on $s$ and $t$, which implies $…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is called \textit{rainbow} if every edge of $G$ receives a different color. Given any host graph $G$, the \textit{anti-Ramsey} number of $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees in $G$, denoted by $r(G,t)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $G$ containing no $t$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. For any vertex partition $P$, let $E(P,G)$ be the set of non-crossing edges in $G$ with respect to $P$. In this paper, we determine $r(G,t)$ for all host graphs $G$: $r(G,t)=|E(G)|$ if there exists a partition $P_0$ with $|E(G)|-|E(P_0,G)|<t…
Given an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(H)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^r$ yields a monochromatic copy of $H$. We investigate $r_k(H)$ when $k$ grows and $H$ is fixed. For nontrivial 3-uniform hypergraphs $H$, the function $r_k(H)$ ranges from $\sqrt{6k}(1+o(1))$ to double exponential in $k$. We observe that $r_k(H)$ is polynomial in $k$ when $H$ is $r$-partite and at least single-exponential in $k$ otherwise. Erdős, Hajnal and Rado gave bounds for large cliques $K_s^r$ with $s\ge s_0(r)…
