This text provides an overview of the (geometric) thermodynamic formalism for transcendental meromorphic and entire functions with particular emphasis on geometric/fractal aspects such as Bowen's Formula expressing the hyperbolic dimension as a unique zero of a pressure function and the behavior of the latter when the transcendental functions vary in an analytic family.
This paper is devoted to establish sufficient conditions under which a transcendental meromorphic function has no unbounded Fatou components and to extend some results for entire functions to meromorphic functions. Actually, we shall mainly discuss non-existence of unbounded wandering domains of a meromorphic function. The case for a composition of finitely many meromorphic function with at least one of them being transcendental can be also investigated in the argument of this paper.
We construct some explicit formulas of rational maps and transcendental meromorphic functions having Herman rings of period strictly larger than one. This gives an answer to a question raised by Shishikura in the 1980s. Moreover, the formulas of some rational maps with nested Herman rings are also found. To obtain the formulas of transcendental meromorphic functions having periodic Herman rings, a crucial step is to find an explicit family of transcendental entire functions having bounded Siegel disks of all possible periods and rotation numbers. This is based on proving the existence of a Man…
This paper attempts to describe some of the results obtained in the iteration theory of transcendental meromorphic functions, not excluding the case of entire functions. The reader is not expected to be familiar with the iteration theory of rational functions. On the other hand, some aspects where the transcendental case is analogous to the rational case are treated rather briefly here. For example, we introduce the different types of components of the Fatou set that occur in the iteration of rational functions but omit a detailed description of these types. Instead, we concentrate on the type…
The characterization and properties of Julia sets of one parameter family of transcendental meromorphic functions $ζ_λ(z)=λ\frac{z}{z+1} e^{-z}$, $λ>0$, $z\in \mathbb{C}$ is investigated in the present paper. It is found that bifurcations in the dynamics of $ζ_λ(x)$, $x\in {\mathbb{R}}\setminus \{-1\}$, occur at several parameter values and the dynamics of the family becomes chaotic when the parameter $λ$ crosses certain values. The Lyapunov exponent of $ζ_λ(x)$ for certain values of the parameter $λ$ is computed for quantifying the chaos in its dynamics. The characterization of the Julia set …
We describe conditions under which a multiply connected wandering domain of a transcendental meromorphic function with a finite number of poles must be a Baker wandering domain, and we discuss the possible eventual connectivity of Fatou components of transcendental meromorphic functions. We also show that if $f$ is meromorphic, $U$ is a bounded component of $F(f)$ and $V$ is the component of $F(f)$ such that $f(U)\subset V$, then $f$ maps each component of $\partial U$ onto a component of the boundary of $V$ in $\hat{\C}$. We give examples which show that our results are sharp; for example, we…
We define two classes of topological infinite degree covering maps modeled on two families of transcendental holomorphic maps. The first, which we call exponential maps of type $(p,q)$, are branched covers and is modeled on transcendental entire maps of the form $P e^{Q}$, where $P$ and $Q$ are polynomials of degrees $p$ and $q$. The second is the class of universal covering maps from the plane to the sphere with two removed points modeled on transcendental meromorphic maps with two asymptotic values. The problem we address is to give a combinatorial characterization of the holomorphic maps co…
We survey the definition of the radial Julia set of a meromorphic function (in fact, more generally, any "Ahlfors islands map"), and give a simple proof that the Hausdorff dimension of the reduced Julia set always coincides with the hyperbolic dimension.
In this paper, we study the large scaled geometric structure of Julia sets of entire and meromorphic functions. Roughly speaking, the structure gives us some asymptotic information about the Julia set near the essential singularity. We will show that part of this structure are determined by the transcendental directions coming from function theoretic point of view.
The Fatou-Julia theory for rational functions has been extended both to transcendental meromorphic functions and more recently to several different types of quasiregular mappings in higher dimensions. We extend the iterative theory to quasimeromorphic mappings with an essential singularity at infinity and at least one pole, constructing the Julia set for these maps. We show that this Julia set shares many properties with those for transcendental meromorphic functions and for quasiregular mappings of punctured space.
The escaping set I(f) of a transcendental meromorphic function f consists of all points which tend to infinity under iteration. The Eremenko-Lyubich class B consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions for which the set of finite critical and asymptotic values of f is bounded. It is shown that if f is in B and of finite order of growth, if infinity is not an asymptotic value of f and if the multiplicities of the poles of f are uniformly bounded, then the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) is strictly smaller than 2. In fact, we give a sharp bound for the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) in terms o…
In this paper we consider the topological class, denoted by AV2, of universal covering maps from the plane to the sphere with two removed points. We prove that an element f in AV2 with finite post-singular set is combinatorially equivalent to a meromorphic transcendental map g with constant Schwarzian derivative if any only if f satisfies a Bounded Geometry condition.
We show that any dynamics on any discrete planar sequence $S$ can be realized by the postsingular dynamics of some transcendental meromorphic function, provided we allow for small perturbations of $S$. This work was influenced by an analogous result of DeMarco, Koch and McMullen for finite $S$ in the rational setting. The proof contains a method for constructing meromorphic functions with good control over both the postsingular set of $f$ and the geometry of $f$, using the Folding Theorem of Bishop and a classical fixpoint theorem of Tychonoff.
We prove that entire transcendental holomorphic functions with an omitted value have infinite entropy. A proof for general transcendental entire functions will be given in an upcoming paper.
We study how the orbits of the singularities of the inverse of a meromorphic function prescribe the dynamics on its Julia set, at least up to a set of (Lebesgue) measure zero. We concentrate on a family of entire transcendental functions with only finitely many singularities of the inverse, counting multiplicity, all of which either escape exponentially fast or are pre-periodic. For these functions we are able to decide, whether the function is recurrent of not. In the case that the Julia set is not the entire plane we also obtain estimates for the measure of the Julia set.
We use Bowen's definition of topological entropy and Ahlfors five islands theorem, as well as the theory of polynomial-like mappings, to show that the topological entropy of any entire transcendental function is infinity. In addition the entropy is concentrated on the Julia set for each meromorphic function which has no wandering domains.
If $f$ is a transcendental entire function with only algebraic singularities we calculate the Ruelle operator of $f$. Moreover, we prove both (i) if $f$ has a summable critical point, then $f$ is not structurally stable under certain topological conditions and (ii) if all critical points of $f$ belonging to Julia set are summable, then there exists no invariant lines fields in the Julia set.
Let $f$ and $g$ be transcendental entire functions, each with a bounded set of singular values, and suppose that $f$ and $g$ are affinely equivalent (that is, $g \circ ϕ= ψ\circ f$, where $ϕ,ψ:\C\to\C$ are affine). We show that the escaping sets of $f$ and $g$ have the same Hausdorff dimension. Using a result of the second author, we deduce that there exists a family of transcendental entire functions for which the escaping set has Hausdorff dimension equal to one.
In this paper, we have investigated the Bungee set of composition of two transcendental entire functions. We have provided a class of permutable entire functions for which their Bungee sets are equal. Moreover, we have obtained a result on permutable entire functions for which the escaping set of the composite entire function equals the union of the escaping sets of the two functions. In addition, we establish important relations between the Bungee set, Escaping set and Filled Julia set of composite entire functions with that of its individual functions.
Let f be a transcendental meromorphic function. Suppose that the finite part of the postsingular set of f is bounded, that f has no recurrent critical points or wandering domains, and that the degree of pre-poles of f is uniformly bounded. Then we show that f supports no invariant line fields on its Julia set. We prove this by generalizing two results about rational functions to the transcendental setting: a theorem of Mane about the branching of iterated preimages of disks, and a theorem of McMullen regarding absence of invariant line fields for "measurably transitive" functions. Both our the…
We partition the fast escaping set of a transcendental entire function into two subsets, the maximally fast escaping set and the non-maximally fast escaping set. These sets are shown to have strong dynamical properties. We show that the intersection of the Julia set with the non-maximally fast escaping set is never empty. The proof uses a new covering result for annuli, which is of wider interest. It was shown by Rippon and Stallard that the fast escaping set has no bounded components. In contrast, by studying a function considered by Hardy, we give an example of a transcendental entire functi…
We study transcendental meromorphic functions having two prepole asymptotic values and no critical values. We prove that these functions acting on their Julia sets are non-ergodic, which illustrates the antithesis of the Keen-Kotus result in [KK2] on the ergodicity of another subfamily of functions with two asymptotic values and no critical values.
We show that, if the Julia set of a transcendental entire function is locally connected, then it takes the form of a spider's web in the sense defined by Rippon and Stallard. In the opposite direction, we prove that a spider's web Julia set is always locally connected at a dense subset of buried points. We also show that the set of buried points (the residual Julia set) can be a spider's web.
We show that for any transcendental meromorphic function $f$ there is a point $z$ in the Julia set of $f$ such that the iterates $f^n(z)$ escape, that is, tend to $\infty$, arbitrarily slowly. The proof uses new covering results for analytic functions. We also introduce several slow escaping sets, in each of which $f^n(z)$ tends to $\infty$ at a bounded rate, and establish the connections between these sets and the Julia set of $f$. To do this, we show that the iterates of $f$ satisfy a strong distortion estimate in all types of escaping Fatou components except one, which we call a plane-filli…
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the absence of invariant line fields on the conical Julia set of an analytic function of one variable. This proof applies not only to rational as well as transcendental meromorphic functions (where it was previously known), but even to the extremely general setting of Ahlfors islands maps as defined by Adam Epstein. In fact, we prove a more general result on the absence of invariant_differentials_, measurable with respect to a conformal measure that is supported on the (unbranched) conical Julia set. This includes the study of cohomological equation…

We consider transcendental meromorphic function for which the set of finite singularities of its inverse is bounded. Bergweiler and Kotus gave bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of escaping sets if the function has no logarithmic singularities over infinity, the multiplicities of poles are bounded and the order is finite. We study the case of infinite order and find gauge functions for which the Hausdorff measure of escaping sets is zero or infinity.
We study the parameter planes of certain one-dimensional, dynamically-defined slices of holomorphic families of entire and meromorphic transcendental maps of finite type. Our planes are defined by constraining the orbits of all but one of the singular values, and leaving free one asymptotic value. We study the structure of the regions of parameters, which we call {\em shell components}, for which the free asymptotic value tends to an attracting cycle of non-constant multiplier. The exponential and the tangent families are examples that have been studied in detail, and the hyperbolic components…
Let $f$ be an arbitrary transcendental entire or meromorphic function in the class $\mathcal S$ (i.e. with finitely many singularities). We show that the topological pressure $P(f,t)$ for $t > 0$ can be defined as the common value of the pressures $P(f,t, z)$ for all $z \in \mathbb C$ up to a set of Hausdorff dimension zero. Moreover, we prove that $P(f,t)$ equals the supremum of the pressures of $f|_X$ over all invariant hyperbolic subsets $X$ of the Julia set, and we prove Bowen's formula for $f$, i.e. we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the radial Julia set of $f$ is equal to the infimu…
Let $f$ be a meromorphic function with bounded set of singular values and for which infinity is a logarithmic singularity. Then we show that $f$ has infinitely many repelling periodic points for any minimal period $n\geq1$, using a much simpler argument than the corresponding results for arbitrary entire transcendental functions.
We investigate the existence and distribution of Herman rings of transcendental meromorphic functions which have at least one omitted value. If all the poles of such a function are multiple then it has no Herman ring. Herman rings of period one or two do not exist. Functions with a single pole or with at least two poles one of which is an omitted value have no Herman ring. Every doubly connected periodic Fatou component is a Herman ring.
The notion of nearly abelian rational semigroup was introduced by Hinkannen and Martin. In this paper, we have introduced the notion of nearly abelian transcendental semigroup. We have extended the results of nearly abelian rational semigroups to the best possible class of nearly abelian transcendental semigroups. We have given a class of functions which nearly permute with a given transcendental entire function. In addition, a relation between the postsingular set of composition of two entire functions with that of individual functions is obtained.
We study the dynamics of an arbitrary semigroup of transcendental entire functions using Fatou-Julia theory. Several results of the dynamics associated with iteration of a transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroups. We provide some conditions for connectivity of the Julia set of the transcendental semigroups. We also study finitely generated transcendental semigroups, abelian transcendental semigroups and limit functions of transcendental semigroups on its invariant Fatou components.
We consider the dynamics associated with an arbitrary semigroup of transcendental entire functions. Fatou-Julia theory is used to investigate the dynamics of these semigroups. Several results of the dynamics associated with iteration of a transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroup case. We also investigate the dynamics of conjugate semigroups, Abelian transcendental semigroups and wandering and Baker domains of transcendental semigroups.
We study transcendental singularities of a Schröder map arising from a rational function $f$, using results from complex dynamics and Nevanlinna theory. These maps are transcendental meromorphic functions of finite order in the complex plane. We show that their transcendental singularities lie over the set where $f$ is not semihyperbolic (unhyperbolic). In addition, if they are direct, then they lie over only attracting periodic points of $f$, and moreover, if $f$ is a polynomial, then both direct and indirect singularities lie over attracting, parabolic and Cremer periodic points of $f$. We a…
We introduce the concept of escaping set for semigroups of transcendental entire functions using Fatou-Julia theory. Several results of the escaping set associated with the iteration of one transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroups. We also investigate the properties of escaping sets for conjugate semigroups and abelian transcendental semigroups. Several classes of transcendental semigroups for which Eremenko's conjectures hold have been provided.
We prove density of hyperbolicity in spaces of (i) real transcendental entire functions, bounded on the real line, whose singular set is finite and real and (ii) transcendental self-maps of the punctured plane which preserve the circle and whose singular set (apart from zero and infinity) is contained in the circle. In particular, we prove density of hyperbolicity in the famous Arnol'd family of circle maps and its generalizations, and solve a number of other open problems for these functions, including three conjectures by de Melo, Salomão and Vargas. We also prove density of (real) hyperboli…
Let $f$ and $g$ be commuting meromorphic functions with finitely many poles. By studying the behaviour of Fatou components under this commuting relation, we prove that $f$ and $g$ have the same Julia set whenever $f$ and $g$ have no simply connected fast-escaping wandering domains. By combining this with a recent result of Tsantaris', we obtain the strongest statement (to date) regarding the Julia sets of commuting meromorphic functions. In order to highlight the difference to the entire case, we show that transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many poles have orbits that alternate…
In this article, we present a landing theorem for periodic dynamic rays for transcendental entire maps which have bounded post-singular sets, by using standard hyperbolic geometry results.
We prove an analog of Boettcher's theorem for transcendental entire functions in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. More precisely, let f and g be entire functions with bounded sets of singular values and suppose that f and g belong to the same parameter space (i.e., are *quasiconformally equivalent* in the sense of Eremenko and Lyubich). Then f and g are conjugate when restricted to the set of points which remain in some sufficiently small neighborhood of infinity under iteration. Furthermore, this conjugacy extends to a quasiconformal self-map of the plane. We also prove that this conjugacy is es…
This paper continues our investigation of the dynamics of families of transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many singular values all of which are finite. Here we look at a generalization of the family of polynomials $P_a(z)=z^{d-1}(z- \frac{da}{(d-1)})$, the family $f_λ=λ\tan^p z^q$. These functions have a super-attractive fixed point, and, depending on $p$, one or two asymptotic values. Although many of the dynamical properties generalize, the existence of an essential singularity and of poles of multiplicity greater than one implies that significantly different techniques are re…
We prove that there exist three transcendental entire functions that have infinite number of domains which lie in the wandering component of each of these functions and their composites. This result is a generalization of the result of Dinesh Kumar, Gopal Datt and Sanjay Kumar. In particular, they proved that there exist two transcendental entire functions that have infinite number of domains which lie in the wandering components of each of these functions and their composites.
Baker proved that for transcendental entire functions there is at most one completely invariant component of the Fatou set. It was observed by Julien Duval that there is a missing case in Baker's proof. In this article we follow Baker's ideas and give some alternative arguments to establish the result.
In recent years, there has been significant progress in the understanding of the dynamics of transcendental entire functions with bounded postsingular set. In particular, for certain classes of such functions, a complete description of their topological dynamics in terms of a simpler model has been given inspired by methods from polynomial dynamics. In this paper, and for the first time, we give analogous results in cases when the postsingular set is unbounded. More specifically, we show that if $f$ is of finite order, has bounded criticality on its Julia set $J(f)$, and its singular set consi…
We consider the dynamical properties of transcendental entire functions and their compositions. We give several conditions under which Fatou set of a transcendental entire function $f$ coincide with that of $f\circ g,$ where $g$ is another transcendental entire function. We also prove some result giving relationship between singular values of transcendental entire functions and their compositions.
