The past decade has seen a flourishing of advances in harmonic analysis of graphs. They lie at the crossroads of graph theory and such analytical tools as graph Laplacians, Markov processes and associated boundaries, analysis of path-space, harmonic analysis, dynamics, and tail-invariant measures. Motivated by recent advances for the special case of Bratteli diagrams, our present focus will be on those graph systems $G$ with the property that the sets of vertices $V$ and edges $E$ admit discrete level structures. A choice of discrete levels in turn leads to new and intriguing discrete-time random-walk models.
Our main extension (which greatly expands the earlier analysis of Bratteli diagrams) is the case when the levels in the graph system $G$ under consideration are now allowed to be standard measure spaces. Hence, in the measure framework, we must deal with systems of transition probabilities, as opposed to incidence matrices (for the traditional Bratteli diagrams).
The paper is divided into two parts, (i) the special case when the levels are countable discrete systems, and (ii) the (non-atomic) measurable category, i.e., when each level is a prescribed measure space with standard Borel structure. The study of the two cases together is motivated in part by recent new results on graph-limits. Our results depend on a new analysis of certain duality systems for operators in Hilbert space; specifically, one dual system of operator for each level. We prove new results in both cases, (i) and (ii); and we further stress both similarities, and differences, between results and techniques involved in the two cases.
In our study of electrical networks we develop two themes: finding explicit formulas for special classes of functions defined on the vertices of a transient network, namely monopoles, dipoles, and harmonic functions. Secondly, our interest is focused on the properties of electrical networks supported on Bratteli diagrams. We show that the structure of Bratteli diagrams allows one to describe algorithmically harmonic functions as well as monopoles and dipoles. We also discuss some special classes of Bratteli diagrams (stationary, Pascal, trees), and we give conditions under which the harmonic f…
We study a new class of representations of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $\mathcal O_A$ constructed by semibranching function systems, naturally related to stationary Bratteli diagrams. The notion of isomorphic semibranching function systems is defined and studied. We show that any isomorphism of such systems implies the equivalence of the corresponding representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal O_A$. In particular, we show that equivalent measures generate equivalent representations of $\mathcal O_A$. We use Markov measures which are defined on the path space of stationary Bratteli diagr…
In this paper we look at symbolic substitutions and their relationship to Bratteli diagrams and their associated operator algebras. In particular, we consider the equivalence relation on substitutions induced by telescope equivalence of Bratteli diagrams. Such an equivalence preserves pure aperiodicity and primitivity but fails to preserve rank, order, and number of letters. In a similar manner, we consider the equivalence relation on substitutions induced by telescope equivalence of ordered Bratteli diagrams. This results in a finer equivalence but fails to provide a complete invariant. An ap…
For a Bratteli diagram $B$, we study the simplex $\mathcal{M}_1(B)$ of probability measures on the path space of $B$ which are invariant with respect to the tail equivalence relation. Equivalently, $\mathcal{M}_1(B)$ is formed by probability measures invariant with respect to a homeomorphism of a Cantor set. We study relations between the number of ergodic measures from $\mathcal{M}_1(B)$ and the structure and properties of the diagram $B$. We prove a criterion and find sufficient conditions of unique ergodicity of a Bratteli diagram, in which case the simplex $\mathcal{M}_1(B)$ is a singleton…
A category structure for ordered Bratteli diagrams is proposed in which isomorphism coincides with the notion of equivalence of Herman, Putnam, and Skau. It is shown that the natural one-to-one correspondence between the category of Cantor minimal systems and the category of simple properly ordered Bratteli diagrams is in fact an equivalence of categories. This gives a Bratteli-Vershik model for factor maps between Cantor minimal systems. We give a construction of factor maps between Cantor minimal systems in terms of suitable maps (called premorphisms) between the corresponding ordered Bratte…
We study finite measures on Bratteli diagrams invariant with respect to the tail equivalence relation. Amongst the proved results on finiteness of measure extension, we characterize the vertices of a Bratteli diagram that support an ergodic finite invariant measure.
This paper is a survey on general (simple and non-simple) Bratteli diagrams which focuses on the following topics: finite and infinite tail invariant measures on the path space $X_B$ of a Bratteli diagram $B$, existence of continuous dynamics on $X_B$ compatible with tail equivalence relation, subdiagrams and measure supports. We also discuss the structure of Bratteli diagrams, orbit equivalence and full groups, homeomorphic measures.
In this note we apply a substantial improvement of a result of S. Ferenczi on $S$-adic subshifts to give Bratteli-Vershik representations of these subshifts.
We continue our study of orderings on Bratteli diagrams started in previous work, joint with Jan Kwiatkowski, where Bratteli diagrams of finite rank were considered. We extend the notions of languages, permutations (called correspondences in this paper), skeletons and associated graphs to the case of general Bratteli diagrams, and show their relevance to the study of perfect orderings: those that support Vershik maps; in particular, perfect orderings with several extremal paths. A perfect ordering comes equipped with a skeleton and a correspondence, and conversely, given a skeleton and corresp…
For the simple Bratteli diagrams B where there is a single edge connecting any two vertices in consecutive levels, we show that a random order has uncountably many infinite paths if and only if the growth rate of the level-n vertex sets is super-linear. This gives us the dichotomy: a random order on a slowly growing Bratteli diagram admits a homeomorphism, while a random order on a quickly growing Bratteli diagram does not. We also show that for a large family of infinite rank Bratteli diagrams, a random order on B does not admit a continuous Vershik map.
Let T be an aperiodic and repetitive tiling of R^d with finite local complexity. Let O be its tiling space with canonical transversal X. The tiling equivalence relation R_X is the set of pairs of tilings in X which are translates of each others, with a certain (etale) topology. In this paper R_X is reconstructed as a generalized "tail equivalence" on a Bratteli diagram, with its standard AF-relation as a subequivalence relation. Using a generalization of the Anderson-Putnam complex, O is identified with the inverse limit of a sequence of finite CW-complexes. A Bratteli diagram B is built from …
Given a Bratteli diagram B, we study the set O(B) of all possible orderings w on a Bratteli diagram B and its subset P(B) consisting of `perfect' orderings that produce Bratteli-Vershik dynamical systems (Vershik maps). We give necessary and sufficient conditions for w to be perfect. On the other hand, a wide class of non-simple Bratteli diagrams that do not admit Vershik maps is explicitly described. In the case of finite rank Bratteli diagrams, we show that the existence of perfect orderings with a prescribed number of extreme paths affects significantly the values of the entries of the inci…
In this paper, we define some Markov Chains associated to Vershik maps on Bratteli diagrams. We study probabilistic and spectral properties of their transition operators and we prove that the spectra of these operators are connected to Julia sets in higher dimensions. We also study topological properties of these spectra.
Let $U$ and $V$ be open subsets of the Cantor set with finite disjoint complements, and let $h:U\to V$ be a homeomorphism with dense orbits. Building from the ideas of Herman, Putnam, and Skau, we show that the partial action induced by $h$ can be realized as the Vershik map on a Bratteli diagram, and that any two such diagrams are equivalent.

In the paper "Finite-rank Bratteli-Vershik diagrams are expansive" [DM], Downarowicz and Maass proved that the Cantor minimal system associated to a properly ordered Bratteli diagram of finite rank is either an odometer system or an expansive system. We give a new proof of this truly remarkable result which we think is more transparent and easier to understand. We also address the question (QUESTION 1) raised in [DM] and we find a better (i.e. lower) bound than the one given in [DM]. In fact, we conjecture that the bound we have found is optimal.
We study stationary ordered Bratteli diagrams and give necessary and sufficient conditions for these orders to generate a continuous Vershik map. We apply this to finding adic representations for one sided substitution subshifts. We give an algorithm to find the branch points of a substitution, which have to be mapped to the minimal elements of such an ordering. We find adic representations for substitutions with one branch point, and also substitutions all of whose branch points are fixed.
A Bratteli diagram is a type of graph in which the vertices are split into finite subsets occupying an infinite sequence of levels, starting with a bottom level and moving to successively higher levels along edges connecting consecutive levels. An information source on a Bratteli diagram consists of a sequence of PMFs on the vertex sets at each level that are compatible under edge transport. By imposing a regularity condition on the Bratteli diagram, we obtain various results for its information sources including ergodic and entropy rate decomposition theorems, a Shannon-Mcmillan-Breiman theor…
In this second paper, we study the case of substitution tilings of R^d. The substitution on tiles induces substitutions on the faces of the tiles of all dimensions j=0, ..., d-1. We reconstruct the tiling's equivalence relation in a purely combinatorial way using the AF-relations given by the lower dimensional substitutions. We define a Bratteli multi-diagram B which is made of the Bratteli diagrams B^j, j=0, ..., d, of all those substitutions. The set of infinite paths in B^d is identified with the canonical transversal Xi of the tiling. Any such path has a "border", which is a set of tails i…
We study ergodic finite and infinite measures defined on the path space $X_B$ of a Bratteli diagram $B$ which are invariant with respect to the tail equivalence relation on $X_B$. Our interest is focused on measures supported by vertex and edge subdiagrams of $B$. We give several criteria when a finite invariant measure defined on the path space of a subdiagram of $B$ extends to a finite invariant measure on $B$. Given a finite ergodic measure on a Bratteli diagram $B$ and a subdiagram $B'$ of $B$, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the measure of the path space $X_{B'…
In this paper we focus on Bratteli-Vershik models of general compact zero-dimensional systems with the action of a homeomorphism. An ordered Bratteli diagram is called decisive if the corresponding Vershik map prolongs in a unique way to a homeomorphism of the whole path space of the Bratteli diagram. We prove that a compact invertible zero-dimensional system has a decisive Bratteli-Vershik model if and only if the set of aperiodic points is either dense, or its closure misses one periodic orbit.
The purpose of the paper is a general analysis of path space measures. Our focus is a certain path space analysis on generalized Bratteli diagrams. We use this in a systematic study of systems of self-similar measures (the term ``IFS measures'' is used in the paper) for both types of such diagrams, discrete and continuous. In special cases, such measures arise in the study of iterated function systems (IFS). In the literature, similarity may be defined by, e.g., systems of affine maps (Sierpinski), or systems of conformal maps (Julia). We study new classes of semi-branching function systems re…
We study the set S of ergodic probability Borel measures on stationary non-simple Bratteli diagrams which are invariant with respect to the tail equivalence relation. Equivalently, the set S is formed by ergodic probability measures invariant with respect to aperiodic substitution dynamical systems. The paper is devoted to the classification of measures $μ$ from S with respect to a homeomorphism. The properties of these measures related to the clopen values set $S(μ)$ are studied. It is shown that for every measure $μ$ in S there exists a subgroup G of $\mathbb R$ such that $S(μ)$ is the inter…
We consider Bratteli diagrams of finite rank (not necessarily simple) and ergodic invariant measures with respect to the cofinal equivalence relation on their path spaces. It is shown that every ergodic invariant measure (finite or "regular" infinite) is obtained by an extension from a simple subdiagram. We further investigate quantitative properties of these measures, which are mainly determined by the asymptotic behavior of products of incidence matrices. A number of sufficient conditions for unique ergodicity are obtained. One of these is a condition of exact finite rank, which parallels a …
This paper is a survey devoted to the study of probability and infinite ergodic invariant measures for aperiodic homeomorphisms of a Cantor set. We focus mostly on the cases when a homeomorphism has either a unique ergodic invariant measure or finitely many such measures (finitely ergodic homeomorphisms). Since every Cantor dynamical system $(X,T)$ can be realized as a Vershik map acting on the path space of a Bratteli diagram, we use combinatorial methods developed in symbolic dynamics and Bratteli diagrams during the last decade to study the simplex of invariant measures.
Bratteli--Vershik systems have been widely studied. In the context of general 0-dimensional systems, Bratteli--Vershik systems are homeomorphisms that have Kakutani--Rohlin refinements. Bratteli diagram has a strong power to analyze such systems. Besides this approach, general graph covers can be used to represent any 0-dimensional system. Indeed, all 0-dimensional systems can be described as a certain kind of sequences of graph covers that may not be brought about by the Kakutani--Rohlin partitions. In this paper, we follow the context of general graph covers to analyze the relations between …
We introduce an adic (Bratteli-Vershik) dynamical system based on a diagram whose path counts from the root are the Delannoy numbers. We identify the ergodic invariant measures, prove total ergodicity for each of them, and initiate the study of the dimension group and other dynamical properties.
A $λ$-graph system $\frak L$ is a labeled Bratteli diagram with shift operation. It is a generalized notion of finite labeled graph and presents a subshifts. We will study continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided subshifts and topological conjugacy of two-sided subshifts from the view points of groupoids and $C^*$-algebras constructed from $λ$-graph systems.
For any adic transformation $T$ defined on the path space $X$ of an ordered Bratteli diagram, endowed with a Markov measure $μ$, we construct an explicit dimension space (which corresponds to a matrix values random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$) whose Poisson boundary can be identified as a $\mathbb{Z}$-space with the dynamical system $(X,μ,T)$. We give a couple of examples to show how dimension spaces can be used in the study of nonsingular transformations.
A $λ$-graph bisystem $\mathcal{L}$ consists of two labeled Bratteli diagrams $(\mathcal{L}^-,\mathcal{L}^+)$, that presents a two-sided subshift $Λ_\mathcal{L}$. We will construct a compact totally disconnected metric space with a shift homeomorphism consisting of two-dimensional configurations from a $λ$-graph bisystem. The configuration space has a certain étale AF-equivalence relation written $R_{\mathcal{L}}$ with a natural shift homeomorphism $σ_{\mathcal{L}}$ coming from the shift homeomorphism $σ_{Λ_{\mathcal{L}}}$ on the subshift $Λ_{\mathcal{L}}$. The equivalence relation $R_{\mathcal…
The survey covers several topics related to the asymptotic structure of various combinatorial and analytic objects such as the path spaces in graded graphs (Bratteli diagrams), invariant measures with respect to countable groups, etc. The main subject is the asymptotic structure of filtrations and a new notion of standardness. All graded graphs and all filtrations of Borel or measure spaces can be divided into two classes: the standard ones, which have a regular behavior at infinity, and the other ones. Depending on this property, the list of invariant measures can either be well parameterized…
