In this paper we focus on Bratteli-Vershik models of general compact zero-dimensional systems with the action of a homeomorphism. An ordered Bratteli diagram is called decisive if the corresponding Vershik map prolongs in a unique way to a homeomorphism of the whole path space of the Bratteli diagram. We prove that a compact invertible zero-dimensional system has a decisive Bratteli-Vershik model if and only if the set of aperiodic points is either dense, or its closure misses one periodic orbit.
We develop conditions for the coding of a Bratteli-Vershik system according to initial path segments to be periodic, equivalently for a constructive symbolic recursive scheme corresponding to a cutting and stacking process to produce a periodic sequence. This is a step toward understanding when a Bratteli-Vershik system can be essentially faithfully represented by means of a natural coding as a subshift on a finite alphabet.
Based on our previous graph covering method, we introduce weighted graph covering models and flexible graph covering models that are almost equivalent to the well-known Bratteli--Vershik models. These models play important roles in showing that every invertible dynamical system on compact metrizable zero-dimensional space admits a non-trivial Bratteli--Vershik model and a basic set. We can also obtain an analogue of Krieger's lemma for compact metrizable zero-dimensional systems. The flexible graph covering models enable us to consider "stationary" graph covering models, by which some portion …
In the paper "Finite-rank Bratteli-Vershik diagrams are expansive" [DM], Downarowicz and Maass proved that the Cantor minimal system associated to a properly ordered Bratteli diagram of finite rank is either an odometer system or an expansive system. We give a new proof of this truly remarkable result which we think is more transparent and easier to understand. We also address the question (QUESTION 1) raised in [DM] and we find a better (i.e. lower) bound than the one given in [DM]. In fact, we conjecture that the bound we have found is optimal.
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) have shown that every Cantor minimal homeomorphism with finite topological rank $K > 1$ is expansive. Bezuglyi, Kwiatkowski, and Medynets (2009) extended the result to non-minimal aperiodic cases. In this paper, we show that all finite-rank zero-dimensional systems are expansive or have infinite odometer systems; this is an extension of the two aforementioned results. Nevertheless, the methods follow similar approaches.
Let $U$ and $V$ be open subsets of the Cantor set with finite disjoint complements, and let $h:U\to V$ be a homeomorphism with dense orbits. Building from the ideas of Herman, Putnam, and Skau, we show that the partial action induced by $h$ can be realized as the Vershik map on a Bratteli diagram, and that any two such diagrams are equivalent.
We study simple, properly ordered nonexpansive Bratteli-Vershik ($BV$) systems. Correcting a mistake in an earlier paper, we redefine the classes standard nonexpansive ($SNE$) and strong standard nonexpansive ($SSNE$). We define also the classes of very well timed and well timed systems, their opposing classes of untimed and very untimed systems (which feature, as subclasses of "Case (2)", in the work of Downarowicz and Maass as well as Hoynes on expansiveness of $BV$ systems of finite topological rank), and several related classes according to the existence of indistinguishable pairs (of some…
In this paper, we define some Markov Chains associated to Vershik maps on Bratteli diagrams. We study probabilistic and spectral properties of their transition operators and we prove that the spectra of these operators are connected to Julia sets in higher dimensions. We also study topological properties of these spectra.
For the simple Bratteli diagrams B where there is a single edge connecting any two vertices in consecutive levels, we show that a random order has uncountably many infinite paths if and only if the growth rate of the level-n vertex sets is super-linear. This gives us the dichotomy: a random order on a slowly growing Bratteli diagram admits a homeomorphism, while a random order on a quickly growing Bratteli diagram does not. We also show that for a large family of infinite rank Bratteli diagrams, a random order on B does not admit a continuous Vershik map.
In the theory of zero-dimensional systems and their relation to $C^*$-algebras, Poon (1990) introduced a class of closed sets. We call the closed sets quasi-sections. Medynets (2006) introduced basic sets that are part of quasi-sections in his study of aperiodic zero-dimensional systems and their relation to Bratteli--Vershik models and $C^*$-algebras. Downarowicz and Karpel (2019) introduced the notion of decisiveness in the theory of Bratteli--Vershik models. We previously clarified that particular quasi-sections can be the "bases" of the decisive Bratteli--Vershik models for zero-dimensiona…
The goal of this paper is to put together several techniques in handling dynamical systems on zero-dimensional spaces, such as array representation, inverse limit representation, or Bratteli-Vershik representation. We describe how one can switch from one representation to another. We also briefly review some more recent related notions: symbolic extensions, symbolic extensions with an embedding, and uniform generators. We devote a great deal of attention to marker techniques and we use them to prove two types of results: one concerning entropy and vertical data compression, and another, about …
We continue our study of orderings on Bratteli diagrams started in previous work, joint with Jan Kwiatkowski, where Bratteli diagrams of finite rank were considered. We extend the notions of languages, permutations (called correspondences in this paper), skeletons and associated graphs to the case of general Bratteli diagrams, and show their relevance to the study of perfect orderings: those that support Vershik maps; in particular, perfect orderings with several extremal paths. A perfect ordering comes equipped with a skeleton and a correspondence, and conversely, given a skeleton and corresp…
In this article we characterize measure theoretical eigenvalues of Toeplitz Bratteli-Vershik minimal systems of finite topological rank which are not associated to a continuous eigenfunction. Several examples are provided to illustrate the different situations that can occur.
Bratteli--Vershik systems have been widely studied. In the context of general 0-dimensional systems, Bratteli--Vershik systems are homeomorphisms that have Kakutani--Rohlin refinements. Bratteli diagram has a strong power to analyze such systems. Besides this approach, general graph covers can be used to represent any 0-dimensional system. Indeed, all 0-dimensional systems can be described as a certain kind of sequences of graph covers that may not be brought about by the Kakutani--Rohlin partitions. In this paper, we follow the context of general graph covers to analyze the relations between …
A category structure for ordered Bratteli diagrams is proposed in which isomorphism coincides with the notion of equivalence of Herman, Putnam, and Skau. It is shown that the natural one-to-one correspondence between the category of Cantor minimal systems and the category of simple properly ordered Bratteli diagrams is in fact an equivalence of categories. This gives a Bratteli-Vershik model for factor maps between Cantor minimal systems. We give a construction of factor maps between Cantor minimal systems in terms of suitable maps (called premorphisms) between the corresponding ordered Bratte…
A Bratteli diagram is a type of graph in which the vertices are split into finite subsets occupying an infinite sequence of levels, starting with a bottom level and moving to successively higher levels along edges connecting consecutive levels. An information source on a Bratteli diagram consists of a sequence of PMFs on the vertex sets at each level that are compatible under edge transport. By imposing a regularity condition on the Bratteli diagram, we obtain various results for its information sources including ergodic and entropy rate decomposition theorems, a Shannon-Mcmillan-Breiman theor…
This paper is a survey devoted to the study of probability and infinite ergodic invariant measures for aperiodic homeomorphisms of a Cantor set. We focus mostly on the cases when a homeomorphism has either a unique ergodic invariant measure or finitely many such measures (finitely ergodic homeomorphisms). Since every Cantor dynamical system $(X,T)$ can be realized as a Vershik map acting on the path space of a Bratteli diagram, we use combinatorial methods developed in symbolic dynamics and Bratteli diagrams during the last decade to study the simplex of invariant measures.
A Cantor minimal system is of finite topological rank if it has a Bratteli-Vershik representation whose number of vertices per level is uniformly bounded. We prove that if the topological rank of a minimal dynamical system on a Cantor set is finite then all its minimal Cantor factors have finite topological rank as well. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Donoso, Durand, Maass, and Petite.
